Maurice is an incredible person to work with if you are looking for a trustworthy Chicago tailor with a great reputation. Earlier this year, I had a very random tailoring project that I needed help with, and had no idea where to turn to find someone who would complete the project at a reasonable price (and who would make it look great!). I searched for tailors in Chicago on Yelp, and Maurice was the only one with only 5 star reviews - and now I know why! I contacted Maurice by phone and gave him a general description of what I was looking for, and he told me when I could stop by to bring it over. I participate in an annual fundraising event called Cycle for Survival, and I was looking for someone to help me do something creative with all of my past Cycle for Survival t shirts, by taking the different logos from the shirts and sewing them onto a new hooded sweatshirt like patches. Maurice said no problem, and he loved the creative challenge! He also gave me the neatest 'tour' around his workspace highlighting all the cool projects he has worked on. I cam back a week later to pick up the sweatshirt and it looked amazing!! I have never gotten as many compliments on an article of clothing as I did that sweatshirt at my fundraising event. Nice guy and good work but terrible experience. Got the suit for my wedding done here. He kept putting off the work for weeks until finally he said it was done. Upon arrival and two weeks after he said it was done, he hadn't even started it yet. Sat for an entire hour until he finished it. Lots of excuses for not working on the piece, lied about it being done, and made me sit and wait while he finished it top to bottom. Ridiculous. read more

Just picked up my Tuxedo and jeans. He took in the sleeves, opened waist and hemmed the pants. Also hemmed my jeans. Price was great. $85 for everything and it was done in less than a week. He's super nice. Don't be put off by his location being in an industrial area. He's good and worth going to. Highly recommended! read more

And a lovely fellow, to boot! :-) A little bit hard to find, since he's upstairs above an electrical supply establishment... but plenty of space and mountains of materials. He can do it all, and do it in style. Custom fabric buttons, suits, leatherwork, quick alterations or full tailoring jobs... we loved just looking around his space as he did our trim and hem. I am visiting the city for my baby brother's College Graduation & I purchased him a suit, however, my brother didn't come back home before his graduation & we needed to get his pants hemmed in a pinch. I called around and no one could do it on such short notice (I arrived with the suit Friday at 2p & the Graduation is this Sunday aka Mothers Day). I called Maurice's shop & explained our situation --- he happily accommodated us & hemmed the pants in less than 2 hours from the time I called! I called Maurice the day of saying I needed some large patches sewed on a leather vest and could not leave them. He joked and adjusted for my comfort. I had a couple of minor alterations that needed to get done before a trip to Scotland -- one was for a fake pregnant belly that I needed to wear for a play that I was performing there, the other for a dress. I haven't needed anything tailored since moving to Chicago but went to Maurice based off of his stellar reviews. I wasn't disappointed! I was wary as I pulled up to the shop -- it's a rather industrial area and I'm used to tailors being in little friendly shops. However, parking was plentiful and the building was still well-marked with his signage and easy to find. I got buzzed in and Maurice's space is WAY better and cooler than any other I've ever been to. It's a huge treasure cove of fabrics, equipment, furniture, and outfits. He walked me to his office in the back where there was the normal elevated stand and full-length mirror. The dress I brought in had excess fabric around the armpits and after some careful and thoughtful reflection and manipulation he decided on taping it (I still don't know what that means or how he did it but it fits perfectly now!) As for the fake belly, the elastic that ties around my waist was ripping from the belly itself and I needed it to be reinforced. He replaced the elastic and put it in a slipknot so that it is incredibly secure and was very easy to put on and take off. Even though the trip and my play is over now I imagine I could wear it an infinite number of times without it ever tearing or breaking. Not only is Maurice creative and thoughtful in his care and alterations of your belongings, but the man is pretty much a legend. He has pictures of famous people throughout his office, including Prince, for whom he designed one of his iconic purple suits as a presenter for the Oscars. There's a picture of him and Oprah, as he tailored the outfits for an Ebony shoot for the movie Selma. He made the costume for Benny the Bull over a decade ago, as well as the suits for the 2015 NFL Hall of Fame inductees. There was evidence of countless other accomplishments, as well. He didn't brag, however; it was only when my boyfriend and I made the stop to pick up my items that we asked about the pictures. He seemed super excited and proud and I felt honored that such a talented man would take the time to replace the elastic on a silly costume belly. The pricing was beyond reasonable; way cheaper than I expected. I'm glad that I hit the jackpot on my first try of finding a quality Chicago tailor. I had ordered a suit for my mother's wedding with only a couple weeks left to get alterations. After reading some reviews of Maurice's decided he sounded like my kind of guy. Immediately knew I was in the right place when I noticed the pair of scissors holstered around his leg in a cowboy style leather holster. If that doesn't tell you all you need to know about his professionalism, skill set, creativity and coldness then perhaps his over 30 years experience will. Maurice is the last of a breed, a true artisan tailor! He's done great work for me all throughout, but his last job was the seal. I was visiting the widow of one of my undergraduate advisors around New Year's this year, and she gave me my advisor's tuxedo and a beautiful alpaca wool sport coat that she bought for him when they got engaged. Both pieces were exquisite but a little dated in their look. I turned them over to Maurice. He slimmed the tuxedo jacket and the sport coat and narrowed the legs for the tuxedo pants.
