Fun textures and I'd never had non fried razor clams before. The highlight though was the jiggly quiche that reminded me of an extra rich chawanmushi but with a nice crust. We also got the cheese plate and some sweets. Service was perfect for catching up friends and enjoying a slow morning, but you might be annoyed if you're in a hurry. *sigh*. We had such high hopes for this place, but were sadly disappointed. The food was good, maybe nudging toward four stars... I say "good", but nothing, exceptional or memorable. Technically competent..If it was based on the food alone, I probably wouldn't go back. There are more interesting things elsewhere, including a couple of five star breakfast/brunch/lunch places within walking distance just north north of Burnside. The reason for the three star review was the service. I can't say we received much attention, never once asked if we wanted a refill on coffee/tea, although the small water glasses did get refilled on a couple occasions. The server was polite, but neither personable nor engaging. We felt as if service was an afterthought as she focused on prepping for future diners. I dined here a long time ago (pre pandemic) and found it to be quaint with elegant dishes that's very French, meaning well done dishes but very minimal and small portions. I recently decided to check it out again and overall it was a pleasant lunch dining on a nice day eating at a sidewalk table. Felt very French. I had the roast duck with plums and their signature dessert of Meyer lemon pudding cake. The quality of the food was high, but I held back a star because of the high prices, which has always been the case and still is. The duck breast was nicely prepared, but the $28 plate came with just the sliced duck breast and maybe three slices of plum. For the price, I thought it would come with maybe a small side salad of frisee. The pudding cake had great lemon flavor but the cake itself was cold so you know it was in the refrigerator, and then the pudding sauce around it was warm. So it was a mix of feeling of whether it was supposed to be cold dessert or warm dessert. My second visit - I have been dreaming of this experience for months and it did not disappoint! The interior exudes casual elegance. The team is professional, very friendly, and knowledgeable about pairings (more on that in a sec). The green salad was simple, yet so flavorful. Perfect dressing/greens ratio. The dark bread with baby shrimp salad topped with a kohlrabi carpaccio was delightful. A little French rose complemented it beautifully. Being a rhubarb fan, I could not resist the dessert. On a recent visit to PDX, I walked in for Saturday brunch on a slow day. The menu is a creative mix of classic inspired Norwegian and French fare. Every plate was beautifully presented. The service was knowledgeable, warm, and there right when you need them. The food was the peak experience of my trip to the city. Radishes to start. Bubbles. A pleasantly wobbling quiche, savory clafoutis with poached egg for mains. For dessert the Meyer lemon soufflé, and black pepper cheese cake. 10/10 on everything except the clafoutis which, unluckily, hadn't quite set a firm as intended. No biggie. The owner made it right with us. Sitting at the counter was a lucky choice. It's been awhile since I've been blown away by a spot in PDX and Maurice is the most recent one! Contrary to their small door, the inside is open with clean colors and layout. You get transported away from the bustling downtown area to a serene dining space filled with delicious smell of freshly made French dishes and pastries. There are a handful of booth and bar seatings so do come early if you want to snag a prime spot. We got seated and professionally introduced to their complex but inviting menu which is seasonal and changes regularly. After much debate, in the end, we got the Snails, Scallops, and their Duck Special for our meal, as well as a bottle of Cotes Du Jura that they sell for retail but you can have it at the table with a little corkage fee. Let me tell you that that wine was soso worth it. It's bright and light, perfect as a day wine and paired amazingly with all of our dishes. The Snails dish came with many decently sized snails from the East Coast. Each cooked perfectly and covered in delicious buttery herby sauce with a side of fresh herbs around the plate to cut the fattiness. I love individually plugging each of the snails out, such a unique experience. The snails themselves were also very unique. Nothing quite like it, gotta try them out yourself to find out. The Scallops dish was also simple but full of novel flavors. The scallops were very fresh and cooked to the right doneness. The broth and vegetables on the plate created very unique flavors and complemented the scallops amazingly. Their Duck Special was our favorite dish of the meal, by far. Again, simple yet complex with distinctive flavor profile at the same time. The duck was succulent but not overly heavy. The kumquat added the perfect amount of sweetness while the persimmons and greens reinforce the savoriness of the dish. It's just so darn tasty! I would go back for this again and again. Of course, we got desserts. There were a few to choose from but we went with the Chocolate Cone Cake and the Pepper Cheesecake. Both were delicious. The chocolate cake was soft and very moist while the cheesecake was light but uber creamy with a buttery base. Delightful. Needless to say, we fell in love with the food here. The menu was intimidating at first because of its unfamiliarity but that also made it so fun to just jump in and try stuffs. The chefs striked the perfectly balance of simple, showcasing the fresh ingredients, and complex combinations of flavors in all of their dishes. Service and ambience were also 10/10. Like it was my fault cause I didn't look at a menu, jsut saw a quiche displayed and was like yeah I'll take a slice of quiche, and then when I saw the price after I paid I was as they say "in to deep". I figured I was either leaving with a whole quiche or was gonna get my mind blown by the greatest slice of quiche I ever ate in my life. Overall that slice of quiche was probably prepared very traditionally and there's some justification of the price but it definitely did not blow my mind and it was just nice fluffy egg. It lacked any "seasonal herb" flavoring and probably could use a little finishing salt on the way out. Now if you're craving a slice of quiche and have $23 to burn then go on down to Maurice but I'd rather just make my own at home and have a whole one for that price point. read more

Oh, mon dieu! I've found my soulmate restaurant. With a perfect blend of Scandinavian and French cuisine, the team at Maurice have something special for Portlanders to enjoy. Their limited hours, seating, and menu enhance this enticing environment, too. Overall, I am very impressed. From the moment you approach the space from the streetscape, you'll be curious of what hides behind the glazed windows that blur the experience. The quaint entry door is so cute, and anyone stepping into the interior immediately feels calm. Entering the restaurant reminded me of cold, foggy days along the northern European coastlines. Reservations are highly recommended since minimal or no seating will be available for walk-ins. Thankfully, we were lucky and seated at the bar where a great experience occurred. The team is very friendly, and will always be chatting with you. Our server was iconic, and I truly enjoyed our laughs, jokes, and conversations. I enjoyed learning about the history and intentions behind the concept, especially after learning Maurice has been established for ten years! We ordered several menu selections, and, I enjoyed the pâté the most. Desserts were lovely, and I almost ordered one of the special champagne glasses of the day. As someone who is not traditionally drawn to French cuisine, I was delighted by this little hole in the wall. It's easy to pass by this location with its fogged glass exterior but you are brought into a beautiful, bright little spot once you enter the door. My friend and I shared the rosemary biscuit (so ridiculously good!) then separately enjoyed their quiche (so light and fluffy!!!) in addition to their fish and dumpling soup. My friend also enjoyed their chicken pate greatly. Our server was quiet and unobtrusive, similar to wait staff you might find in a small cafe in France. Such a lovely menu and quaint environment ! Let's start with the environment. There were only a few tables which created a more intimate setting. Perfect for a date or going out with girlfriends. All the small decorative touches gave delicate hints of a French cottage, even down to the gorgeous silverware. Having Megan share the story of select silverware and decor pieces added to the overall experience too! Now the food! Oh my gosh - it's been so long since I've had such exquisite flavors! Everything was paired so perfectly and the flavours were all so distinct and bright! Each being brought out differently when paired with the wine or tea list too. The attention to detail for all the pairings was lovely ! I do think it's worth noting that the portions were "small" by today's standards BUT they were perfect for the environment and experience. Definitely take time to note the delicate flavours in each bite. In the end we were very full so it was definitely plenty of food despite the smaller portion sizes. This luncheonette took the words "cute" and "Francophile" and decided to run with it, and I think that they really managed to create a brand that works. I am absolutely in love with Maurice, so much so that I sometimes hesitate to tell others about it for fear that it will become TOO busy. And yet, I still recommend it to everyone because it deserves recognition, and because I am a giver. The highlights: Their constantly changing menu reflects the seasonality of ingredients, and also demonstrates their focus on sustainable cooking. If you are lucky enough to dine in on a day they are serving poulet au pain (chicken pot pie), you are tasked by me to order it. It's like what a warm hug would taste like. Their chicken liver mousse, perched upon brioche, has also brought me comfort in times of stress. That's better than I can say about most people. Furthermore, they occasionally offer oysters, despite not being an "oyster bar" by any means, and they have consistently been shucked well and fresh. You would be remiss to not round out your meal with one (or several) of their desserts, personal favorites including the black pepper cheesecake, birdseed tea cake, and butter cookies. They also have rotating natural wines, most of which I haven't heard of before. The improveables: I feel that most of the negative reviews of this place complain about two main things: cost and portion size. As I've said before, these seem to be very typical complaints of the average customer. Still, I believe there is some truth with regards to cost...if you are talking about their tasting menus. I do think that the price on these events may be a bit more of an ask than what is served. Otherwise, I do not think that prices on their regular a la carte menu are egregious. With regard to portion size, that depends on the person. At Maurice, there seems to be an emphasis on "lightness", and this is reflected in the way they create meals and decorate their space. Do not come expecting Spaghetti Factory portions or to feel ten pounds heavier after eating. Why would you want those anyway? Many places claim to "cook with love", but Maurice actually does this. The owner is lovely and you can see how much she cares about curating a beautiful little experience. My friends and I love food and wine and asked our server to help us (good move). We had: radishes and butter, salad (excellent), bread, cheese plate, mussels, poached egg, duck and didn't get the oysters because they were sold out. We were too full for dessert. You do pre-pay via a link they send you and then can add on tea or wine day of. The decor was very whimsical and so was the chef and the servers. My husband and I celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary at Maurice and we loved the intimate setting (I think there were 9 diners including us) and the attention provided by the hostess was exceptional. Fine dining for reasonable prices. That's how I'd sum it up at least. I paid $80 + a 20% tip that was included, so $96, for brunch for my girlfriend and I. A big brunch. I am a pig and it takes a lot to fill me up, but I was full before the end of the meal. We ordered two more dishes than the waitress recommended IIRC. Maybe three. So a more typical bill would probably be like $70-80 for two, or $35-40/person. Which to be sure, is a lot of money. But the quality of food and service and atmosphere felt more like the $150-200/person range, and so it feels like a big bargain to me. Without going through everything dish by dish, it was basically all just excellent. And I'm not the type of person to use that word lightly (check out my other reviews and star distribution). It really was all super high quality and well executed. A few things that stuck out to me: - The bread was super awesome. Really fresh, good light and chewy sort of texture, and great sourdough type of flavor. It's hard to think of times I've had bread that I enjoyed more than this. - I had this sweet pastry. I forget what it was called, but it's gotta have been my favorite part of the meal. It had this fancy fruit that had a really nice tart flavor to it. It would have been too tart on it's own, but that tartness was balanced perfectly by the flakey and buttery pastry, the powdered sugar, and the pistachio nuts. Incredible. - The texture of the quiche was crazy. - The novelty of the non-standard ingredients was really fun. I got a salad that had this other fruit I've never heard of before. The waitress said you can't eat it raw, it has to be cooked, and it's something like a cross between a pear and an apple. Which is kinda accurate, but also undersells it. The waitress was great too. I'm usually underwhelmed by servers tbh, but this server was good. She knew the details of every dish, which I think enhanced our experience. The menu can be a little confusing, so it's nice to get those questions answered and hear the details of the dishes as you're served. She also really did a great job of treading the line between being conversational and friendly while also giving the customers space to spend time with each other. Idk. It just felt like high quality, step-above type of service. And the atmosphere was really charming. It felt just like being in a hole in the wall cafe in France. Late 1800s France. Well, I've never been to France, nor have I lived in the late 1800s, but, I guess it's what I'd imagine late 1800s France to be like. My girlfriend and I will definitely be back periodically. Oh, Maurice! I dream about you all the time - the perfect Parisian inspired cafe in the downtown Portland. The first time I came across Maurice was in February 2017. Unfortunately, they were closed and I was quick to bookmark the location for my next trip. In May 2017, my sister and I found comfort here after a long day of touristic attractions. We enjoyed a glass of cava and a petite dessert. The staff is very hospitable. You can tell how much TLC goes into the craftsmanship of the menu (sandwiches, desserts, drinks included!). The flavors of the cheesecake were subtle but executed well. It was almost too beautiful to eat. As intimate as the space may seem, it offers a bright view of the neighborhood. This was an extremely disappointing dinner. I have been to many tasting menus both in Portland and outside Portland. The cost is usually worth it because I read reviews and try to be selective where I enjoy the tasting menu because of the usually associated higher cost. This was sadly the worst tasting menu I have ever had. The biggest problem was the sheer lack of food. I went there to celebrate my birthday with my family. The fact that two of us needed to stop at the local Little Big Burger to get something to eat after dinner is not a good sign. What I found particularly galling A couple nights later for my wife who signed the check, was that my three children ordered the tea pairing and were each charged $29 plus tip. $100 for tiny glasses of tea is ridiculous. It is blatant gouging of the check. I could tell from the fact we got late reservations on a Saturday night and the sheer lack of people in the small restaurant that this restaurant may be struggling. I work downtown and see the struggle that so many great places have over the last two years I don't want to pile on to their situation but I don't like getting blatantly ripped off either. Jimminy Christmas one of the courses was 6 uncooked tiny radishes?! The dessert cookies were the fives smallest macaroons the size of my thumb nail. Isn't baking supposed to be their thing? Except for one lefse taco dish the food was generally bland, fairly uncreative, and sooo tiny. With tip it's over 100 a person. It would have been better if they said it's 25-50 a person and a note that says donations appreciated. In looking at some of the photos of other reviews I can't help but think, did they just not have enough ingredients to make a full meal??? The lunch pix of others seems WAY more than we got. Maurice is a cute French cafe in the heart of downtown Portland. It seats around 20 people and they feature a handwritten menu (I'm guessing they have something different everyday!). Food: I visited for lunch on a Friday. We ordered the following: Salad: A simple greens salad with a lemon vinaigrette. Could have been more dressed. Poulet au pain: Similar to a chicken pot pie, we had one with carrots and peas wrapped in pastry served on the side with the same salad we ordered to start. The chicken thigh is juicy and tender! Courgette filled with brandad: A cod filled zucchini with some olive oil, croutons, and roasted cherry tomatoes. Mango Tarte for desert: Great way to end the meal! The food itself was all pretty good, except for the portion sizes. My biggest gripe with Maurice is that we paid $42 dollars f before tip with no drinks and left hungry. The courgette was a single courgette halved for around $14. Last time I checked, I could probably buy 30 zucchinis for $14. The poulet was probably not even a whole chicken thigh. The strangest part was that the wait staff felt like this was a good amount of food for 2 people. The service itself was slow, which I don't mind since there were only 2 wait staff for the entire restaurant and it fits in with the style of a French bistro. The service was nice, we got new cutlery between lunch and dessert and the dishes were clearly explained to us. Maurice is a quaint French cafe with good food, small portions, and a slow service. Merci bien @Maurice pour un plat phenomenal! I enjoyed a "Fika" lunch during a sunny Thursday afternoon-- no line, attentive waitress who spent time explaining their specials, and quick service. Very cute spot in Portland. We arrived at opening but had to wait 30 minutes for the lunch menu to begin (they told us this in advance). The menu was hard to read since it was handwritten, but our waitress was very helpful in helping us figure out what to order. We ended up getting a toast with poached eggs and roe, salad (the walnut oil really elevated the salad, mussels (SO GOOD I could have had 5 orders of this), an angel cake and 2 brioche breads to go. The staff did seem very busy though and at times it seemed difficult to flag them down. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Portland! read more

Incredible quality. I was in shock at the price at first, $14 for a quiche? $8 for a pastry? But little did I know that this would be the best quiche I've ever had in my life. Unbelievable smooth custardy texture, perfect blend of flavors. And the pastry is so well balanced, absolutely refined. Lovely setting, feels like a piece of Paris in the middle of Portland. Way exceeded my expectations. read more
