We stumbled upon this cafe while visiting the troll. A nice pick me up for our drive. The lingonberry lemonade was refreshing and tarty- just how I like it. The mushroom mana mocha was different but in a good way- the mushroom flavor was no overpowering with the mocha. The barista was nice and helpful in deciding what we wanted to drink. The cafe itself was clean and the seating area was spacious
This place is a hidden gem. I would highly recommend. Food is delicious and staff is friendly especially the bus boy, Katie & Dylan. The only thing stopping me from giving 5 stars...and not impressed with was the payment being taken before we were finished eating. A feeling of being rushed is not necessary in this beautiful environment !!!
We came in search of the troll, Ole Bolle, and discovered such a great spot to have lunch. On a cold day with an early alarm, I was in need of something warm with caffeine. I opted for the London Fog... and received the most delicious beverage. I'd go back just for this. The fall squash salad was great. Mom enjoyed her ham benedict. He liked the vegetable beef soup after he added some hot sauce.
Firstly, we came here because of Ole-Bolle, the baby troll. How do we know he's a baby? Because, unlike the other trolls in the PNW, Ole-Belle has no hair and the way he was kneeling, like a child, we were told. Back to Broder, the food, we order the Lefse and the Swedish Hash. Yummmm! I have not had anything similar, so really can't make a comparison. But the dishes were tasty and delicious and were beautifully plated. Service was excellent with friendly and helpful staff. And the restaurant is filled with lights from the wall of windows with a view of the beautiful grounds.
Broder Söder is an absolute gem of a Swedish café, tucked inside the Nordic Northwest center on Portland's west side. It may be a bit hidden, but once you find it, you're rewarded with a beautifully modern space featuring huge glass windows, warm wood-beam walls, and peaceful forest views. Parking is easy with a small lot up front and plenty of overflow in the side lots. They don't take reservations, so expect to add your name to the list during busy times. Our Sunday brunch wait for a party of four was about 45 minutes, but it flew by--we grabbed coffee, browsed the gift shop and exhibits, and even walked the short trail to see the famous Thomas Dambo "Ole Bolle" troll. Such a fun way to pass the time! The menu offers a wonderful selection of Scandinavian dishes plus excellent hot and cold coffee and tea options. Even the little details shine--my coffee came with lukewarm cream, which felt like a thoughtful touch. We shared the Æbleskiver (Danish Pancakes) with lingonberry jam and lemon curd, and they were absolutely delicious. For my main, I ordered the Pytt I Panna Swedish Hash with chicken sausage--hearty, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. Service was spot-on. Our server checked in just the right amount, kept our coffees filled, cleared plates promptly, and let us linger and chat after finishing our meal. It made the entire experience feel relaxed and welcoming. This was my third visit, and I continue to love this place. I'll definitely be coming back again and again. Highly recommended!
You want a not-so-average breakfast? Then definitely come check this place out. Been here previously, and this second time around was just as memorable for me, and I'm betting it will be for anyone else. First off, the ambiance is quite nice. Located in the Nordia House cultural center, it is pretty casual, and has a few tables, some nice garden views, and cool little gift shop you can check out. The service here is also fantastic! The staff are incredibly friendly, and they do a bang-up job dishing up orders. Be aware this is a bit pricier of a brunch spot, but you are getting some pretty unique and absolutely delicious fare. Also, you can expect a good chance of a wait, as they are pretty popular. So either get here early or see if they take reservations. This morning, we started off with some of their specialty mimosas; with lingonberry syrup and aquavit, this was very refreshing. And for an appetizer we ordered some of the "Æbleskiver", the round little pastries kind of halfway between pancakes and donut holes. Coming out with lingonberry jam and lemon curd, these are just amazing when you have them piping hot. For the entrees, we both went with the "Pytt I Panna", which is this sort of hash of potatoes, yams, peppers and onions, along with some smoked trout, and topped with two lovely over-easy baked eggs. This was really fantastic, and paired well with an extra side order of their roasted seasonal vegetables and rye toast. All in all, this second time around has cemented Broder Söder on my list of favorite places to eat when I visit Portland. For sure will be returning one day, and I'll have to try out some of their other locations, too. Great food, great people; I heartily encourage anyone looking to branch out your brunch options to seriously give this place a shot. Skål!
I've eaten at Broder Soder several times, as well as at their other locations, and Soder remains my favorite. That's probably partly because it's closest to home -- and partly because, honestly, who can resist Ole Bolle? I never feel particularly "adventurous" here, but I think that's because even when the dishes are unique, the ingredients are seasonal, familiar, and local. It's the perfect combination for a comfortable, satisfying breakfast. The baked eggs are probably my favorite dish, though I've never had anything I didn't enjoy. Service is consistently fantastic, and the space itself is a delight. The huge windows make it feel bright and airy, and there's something so cozy about sipping coffee and enjoying abelskiver while watching the rain come down outside. Always a lovely experience.
Great food | Great atmosphere | Beautiful culture We came here on a Monday for brunch. We waited about 5 minutes before being seated, so I'm guessing they are very popular even on weekdays. Not a bad wait at all though! It was our first time coming here. It's very Scandinavian. The carved wooden doors are beautiful and the design of this place is so aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Lots of intention went into this place, making it not just a place to enjoy good food but a place for Nordic people to gather and celebrate their heritage. The food is delicious. I ordered the breakfast bowl and a side of pork sausages with their hibiscus lemonade. My husband enjoyed their savory Lefse breakfast. All of this was so tasty! I loved my breakfast bowl. It is perfect for vegans and those who are looking for something gluten free. I liked the mustard that went with my pork sausage. It wasn't spicy. My husband was very full from the Lefse breakfast, and he said he loved the cheese and mushroom filling with the eggs on top. One thing I will note is that there is no soy milk for a milk substitution. There is only oat milk, so if you're unable to have oatmilk, you may want to try their lemonade drinks and forego the speciality hot drinks (they sound delicious!). Take a quick walk on their trail outside to the troll! There is a Fogelbo home you can tour too. It was closed when we went, so we'll be back next time to tour that. This place is family friendly. Lots of events happening here. Good parking.
Finally came back here with friends visiting and pro tip get here when they open at 8am to be seated right away! You can explore the grounds with Ole Bolle Troll before and after your meal if you have kids - makes it a fun adventure! Casey was our waitress and she was so kind, friendly, and patient with my toddler. I loved that they gave her a reusable metal drinking cup! Of course the food is fresh, flavorful, and delicious! I got my lavender cold brew again with the perfect amount of floral essence and my friend's cardamom latte was creamy as well. The 7-piece pancake ball, the Swedish meatballs, and the Lost Eggs with roasted veggies and toasts were filling for 3 adults and 1 toddler with no leftovers. A must-visit! Bonus that there are so many fun events at the Nordic Cultural Center too! We will come back again sooner next time!
Excellent and unique brunch in a lovely, tranquil setting! I was able to try a variety from the menu including the Golden Milk & Honey Latte, the Toffee Nut Cold Brew, the ableskiver pancakes, "Lost Eggs", and savory lefse breakfast. My favorite was the Lost Eggs which came in its own cute mini cast iron skillet ad had a delightful creamy on the inside / slightly crisp on the outside texture. I wouldn't usually go for smoked ham but did in this case and it was really perfect! The lefse breakfast also had a great texture going on with the crepes but the eggs were a little over for me. I did love the red pepper sauce that came with this dish. The ableskiver were a great way to start the meal and came out quite fast, with sides of lemon curd and lingonberry jam. The pancakes themselves were quite plain as you would typically expect for traditional American pancakes, so I personally liked them best loaded up with jam! The staff were all super friendly and welcoming as well!
The food was better than I expected. I ordered the meatball dish, which came with a fresh salad, crispy potato pancakes, hearty bread, pickles, and four flavorful meatballs. I also added the mushroom topping for a few extra bucks--totally worth it. The portion size was generous, perfect for a satisfying brunch, and I left feeling full and happy. The setting is charming, especially with the garden you can explore while waiting. It adds a nice touch to the experience. However, the wait was pretty brutal--I stood in line for nearly 50 minutes, which definitely tested my patience. The price is a bit on the higher side, but that's expected for a spot in the city. Overall, great food and atmosphere, but the long wait might not be for everyone. If you've got time and don't mind the line, it's worth checking out.
The Fisk Smorgasbord was outstanding! Shrimp with dill aioli imbued freshness. The pickled herring was balanced with vinegar beautifully. Paired with the knackerbrod cracker it was a flavor bomb. Skogenrora (tiny bay shrimp) almost served as a palette cleanser. They were crisp clean dill infused bites of shrimp. House smoked trout is gently prepared. They ensure the fish is enhanced by the light smoke rather than overpowered. The pickled cucumber and yellow beets were delicious. The toast points and caraway butter were spectacular. Molly served me with sophistication and knowledge. She was a great waitress. The dining room boasted gorgeous wood ceilings with the towering windows overlooking a gorgeous garden. This was an amazing culinary experience.
This is a popular brunch place for a reason. This location is a must stop for not only the food but also the sightseeing. My favorite time to visit is in summer when the patio is open. You can enjoy time on the grounds followed by eating outside. On my last visit I came right at opening so I could get seated right away. The menu has a good mix of traditional brunch fare and unique menu items. This visit I ordered the baked oatmeal and a cappuccino. Since it was early and not crowded the food came out quickly. The baked oatmeal was the best oatmeal I have ever had. The coffee was good too. I've been to this location a few times and will continue to revisit in the future. read more

We went one Saturday morning and there was quite a wait, this place is very popular. They were so kind and attentive while we waited. You can order a drink while you wait as well. I got a Marzipan Matcha latte and it was delicious! Our server was very nice and knowledgeable. I'm sure I've had her before. I got the Swedish meatballs which I always get cause I love the sherry cream sauce they out in it. It's so good. My partner got the smoked trout Benedict and he really liked it. Great portion sizes and fun flavors. Not the everyday breakfast Americans are used to. We also shared the Ebelskivers with lemon curd and jam. Those are always good and you have to get them when you go there. The one we went to was in the Scandinavian community center and it has a really nice clean vibe to it. It has large windows so there so much light. They have a little store in the building that you can browse around while you wait. It's a great place if you're down for something different for breakfast. read more

We had an amazing breakfast on our first day in Portland and what an introduction. Fantastic food, service and the environment was so welcoming on a gloomy rainy day. We had: Ableskiver- a must. Lighter than I expected. They look dense in the pictures but was pleasantly surprised by how light and fluffy they were. The lingonberry jam and the lemon curd made it extremely tasty (5/5) Kottebullar- meatballs with sherry tomatoes. I would order this dish every time. It was absolutely incredible. (5/5) Having a Damon troll on the property made this visit even more special. Can't wait to come back read more

What a lovely place to have brunch. We sat outside and enjoyed the warmth of the summer. The food was delicious and our server was excellent. And you can walk over and see one of the Dambo Trolls after you enjoy your meal. read more

Minimal and clean Scandinavian restaurant at the Nordia house. Parking is convenient, there was a bit of a line to check in with the host, but we were sat immediately. For drinks, we ordered the lingonberry lemonade and the strawberry matcha latte. The lemonade was really good, super refreshing. The matcha was not so good, the "strawberry" tasted like nesquik strawberry milk which was overpowering. For food, we got the pancake balls, the Swedish hash, and the Swedish meatballs. Pancake balls: 10/10. Light, fluffy, perfect vessels for the lingonberry jam and lemon curd. Swedish hash: okay! Corned beef was good but it wasn't wow yummy altogether Swedish meatballs: meatballs were wow yummy! I loved the sauce. Salad was nice and fresh, and the potato pancake was good too. Wish it came with more meatballs :c Service was amazing. Even though we were sat outside, we felt very taken care of and everything was served promptly as well. Overall solid brunch place. Definitely a plus that it's a part of the larger nordia house. read more
Gorgeous location! I was just in awe!! I also just love Nordic design; it's so simple, clean lines, airy and bright! When you come, there may be a wait, but you can walk around the beautiful building and landscape...located in the Nordic cultural center. And Ole Bolle is here!!! Food was so good! I've never had this type of breakfast and I very much enjoyed it! I got the Lost Eggs and it surprisingly had so much flavor. It had all sorts of textures and tastes...it was so fun to eat. I highly recommend getting it with both the mushrooms and the ham!! The toasts that come on the side are kind of dry, but the main entrees shined so much, it didn't matter. My son got the Ableskiver Danish pancakes and he loved it! They're a little dense, but they were so fun to eat. My son was able to eat them with his hands and dipped them in the yummy sauces it came with, lemon curd and lingonberry jam The Savory Lefse breakfast was a hit, as well! Their crepes were light and the eggs were cooked perfectly. Overall, such a fun and unique experience! I highly recommend visiting; either for the food, the museum and landscape, or even better; all of the above!! read more

Beautiful place and good food. We went on a Friday for brunch, the parking lot was almost full so weekends maybe tough to get a spot. Our server was very friendly and made sure there were no issues. Highly recommend shareable plate of Dutch pancakes and the lavendar vanilla tea. The cold brew was slightly bitter. read more
We stopped in for lunch on a Sunday around 11:30. After reading other reviews, we knew there would be a wait for a table, so we immediately put our name in at the podium. The very nice lady told us it would be 45-60 mins. There were only 2 in our party. We then headed to the Ole Bolle Troll trail to explore the grounds outside. After visiting the Troll, we came back in to go through the gift shop, look at the artwork in the waiting area and go through the museum to learn about the culture. After doing all that, we only waited about 10-15 mins for our table. We ordered the Danish pancake balls, Swedish meatballs, and Norwegian crepes (lefse). Everything tasted great! We ate every bite and were stuffed when we left. Our order was taken promptly after being seated and our food came out timely. They don't rush you at all. We actually had to ask a server for our bill. Overall we really enjoyed our time here. The staff is helpful and friendly, and the food is delicious. Highly recommend! read more

They hit the trifecta-ambiance, food and service! The skillet dish is really good and so is the mushroom mana chocolatey drink. I haven't experienced this nice of a service around Portland in a while. Shout out to our server- a young gentleman with a mustache, sorry didn't catch his name. Inside is bright on a sunny day which makes it cheery. It's tucked in a forest with access to a trail, doesn't get more PNW than that. read more
This was such a fun spot for breakfast! The meatballs in the creamy sauce was delicious. Tasted just like ones I've had in Sweden! The Danish pancake balls were fluffy and sweet. The lemon curd and lingonberry jam complimented them well. The matcha latte was just the right amount of sweet while still having classic matcha flavor. The service was fast and friendly. There is a gift shop and small art gallery in the same building as the restaurant. And don't miss seeing the nearby troll just a minutes walk away! read more
This place was soso close to being perfect. I love that it's housed inside of Nordia House which is also connected to a nice green space that you can walk around before or after a meal. There was definitely a wait during weekend brunch hours but overall not too bad. Their coffee was delicious, same for the Masala Chai. The Savory Lefse and Meatballs went soso well together. On their own, both of them got great qaulity ingredients and were very well-made. The crepe was so crispy and filled with delicious hearty vegetables on top of a bed of carrot sauce. Meanwhile, the meatballs were super tender and flavorful. The gravy they're in was drinkable delicious. Their Potato Pancake paired well with the rest of the dish, as well as the side salad. This was a super well-rounded dish. I'd gladly get these dishes again. The one letdown, surprisingly, was their Signature Pancake! I found them to be bland and overly doughy. Really need to curd and jam but even then they weren't very nice to eat. Maybe we just got a bad batch but not very impressed by them and wouldn't get again... Service was great. We wanted a nice stop between Portland and Seaside and Broder Söder did not disappoint! The breakfasts and coffees Excellent host and table service. Excellent food. The eggs were perfect. We the Broder restaurants! Good is always delicious and different. The view was lovely. To top it off there is a large sculpture garden outside in the forest. Enjoy! Five Stars. Broder Söder was one of my highly anticipated meals of 2024, and it did not disappoint! I rarely have the chance to try Scandinavian food, so I was extremely excited to stop by. To start, there will likely be a wait (especially on the weekend), but there is a small Nordic store you can shop around in, as well as a really cool surrounding property with a wooden troll. There are much worse places to have to wait for a table! The restaurant does a great job of getting people in and out, as it isn't huge and has limited tables. We ordered the danish pancake balls, which were great for the most part, minus the cold one sitting on top. I ordered the savory lefse breakfast and thought it was just amazing. This is something I would eat daily if I could!! My boyfriend ordered pytt I panna, and he was a little underwhelmed. It seemed like a veggie hash, with little variation between bites. It was a dish we both felt a bit bored of a few bites in. Overall, I would definitely stop by again when I am back in Oregon! Next time, I will have a better idea of what to order and know to expect a longer wait than what was quoted. read more
This was our first breakfast stop on our trip to Portland. We had a slight wait but it was not bad at all. There is an area in the back you can explore with giant tree trolls (I think), which is perfect for some photos. They have a small gift shop with fun trinkets and miniature charm's etc. Food was good over all. Their coffee drinks were good. The fisk smorgasbord was a crowd favorite. I love anything pickled so it was right up my alley with the pickled fish, veggies, and dips. I wasn't a fan of the smoked salmon, but I never am a fan of lox. The mushroom concoction that comes with the Lost Eggs was absolutely amazing! I love the square eggs, something different. The menu is seasonal so I got to try a chicken salad they had that I really enjoyed. The Danish pancakes were a bit disappointing but mainly because the lemon curd and lingonberry jam weren't sweet enough for our group. Service was good and staff was very friendly. read more

It's not often that I get to try Scandinavian breakfast and this cute brunch spot did not disappoint. A bit of a wait on a Sunday morning but worth it! The pancake puffs were a great little sweet dish to share among the 4 of us. The potato crepe was my favorite- enough for a filling breakfast without being too heavy. read more
Wow How come I've never heard of this place! My motorcycle was in for service and I wanted breakfast during the long wait. Googled the map for restaurants and came across this place. This Nordic eating place is simple clean tables and chairs a bit 'Ikea' like. The food and drinks make up for simplicity of furniture. It was a bit chilly sitting outside so I went for the warming Golden Milk. I chose the Lefse for eats and couldn't resist the Gifting cake for take away - I love almond flavored foods. I also want to add I had a house brewed coffee with cream. The cream came out warm! I was so happy about that - true Nordic/European style so your coffee doesn't get cold. read more
