Broder Söder was the perfect place to start our adventure before heading in the woods to visit Ole Bolle. We had our little dog with us so I was happy to see they had a dog friendly patio. It was a warm day and the staff immediately brought her out a bowl of water, which was a thoughtful gesture and shows the level of service they offer to their patrons. Our server, I believe her name was Casey, was lovely. She was friendly and seemed to know a lot of the regulars by name which gave the restaurant a welcoming feel. I ordered the Danish pancakes (Æbleskiver), and they were absolutely delicious. They came with house-made lemon curd and lingonberry jam, and both were incredible. The lemon curd was rich and creamy with just the right amount of tartness, while the lingonberry jam added a sweet-tart flavor that paired perfectly with the fluffy pancakes. Four of them were more than enough to fill me up. My husband ordered the Pytt i Panna, a traditional Swedish hash made with crispy potatoes, bell peppers, and onions, topped with two soft-baked eggs and served with pickled beets and Nordic rye toast. It was hearty, comforting, and full of flavor. The pickled beets were a nice contrast to the savory hash, and everything on the plate was scrumptious! Between the delicious food, welcoming service, and dog-friendly patio, we had a very nice time and it was a good send-off before our walk through the woods to find Ole Bolle. A fantastic place to start the day. We came early for the Old Bolle Troll (can visit anytime during daylight hours) and then came back Broder Soder for brunch at 8AM (Saturday) - no wait upon opening despite having a group of 6. We started with the cardamom latte (rich and nutty) and the matcha marzipan (sweet and with enough aromatic almond flavor) and then proceeded to feast. We started with the Danish pancake donuts- lovely in that they were both savory and sweet, comes with lemon curd and jam. The lefse breakfast was really interesting - a layered thicker 'crepe' with cheese and egg. The fish plate was our family favorite - an epic collection of shrimp, mini shrimps, gravlax, pickled herring (our favorite) various breads, crackers and sauces. Very well presented, fun to eat, and enough to share. We also ordered the Swedish meatballs - rich hearty but small and few (5 total). Luckily, we had plenty of other food and this dish was great with sherry mushroom sauce and a delicious potato latke-like side. We went one Saturday morning and there was quite a wait, this place is very popular. They were so kind and attentive while we waited. You can order a drink while you wait as well. I got a Marzipan Matcha latte and it was delicious! Our server was very nice and knowledgeable. I'm sure I've had her before. I got the Swedish meatballs which I always get cause I love the sherry cream sauce they out in it. It's so good. My partner got the smoked trout Benedict and he really liked it. Great portion sizes and fun flavors. Not the everyday breakfast Americans are used to. We also shared the Ebelskivers with lemon curd and jam. Those are always good and you have to get them when you go there. The one we went to was in the Scandinavian community center and it has a really nice clean vibe to it. It has large windows so there so much light. They have a little store in the building that you can browse around while you wait. One of the more unique places in Portland and well worth the visit. This is in a Scandinavian center with a wonderful gift store and other things to do (the troll!). It's very well done - not cheap and touristy. The menu is amazingly good with all kinds of Scandinavian treats. The fish soup is perfect. I know it can be hard to get fired up about soup but it's as good as what you would get in Norway. I had the lochs and shrimp on rye bread. The bread is authentic! Probably some of the best I've had. This is a popular brunch place for a reason. This location is a must stop for not only the food but also the sightseeing. My favorite time to visit is in summer when the patio is open. You can enjoy time on the grounds followed by eating outside. On my last visit I came right at opening so I could get seated right away. The menu has a good mix of traditional brunch fare and unique menu items. This visit I ordered the baked oatmeal and a cappuccino. Since it was early and not crowded the food came out quickly. We had an amazing breakfast on our first day in Portland and what an introduction. Fantastic food, service and the environment was so welcoming on a gloomy rainy day. We had: Ableskiver- a must. Lighter than I expected. They look dense in the pictures but was pleasantly surprised by how light and fluffy they were. Firstly, we came here because of Ole-Bolle, the baby troll. How do we know he's a baby? Because, unlike the other trolls in the PNW, Ole-Belle has no hair and the way he was kneeling, like a child, we were told. Back to Broder, the food, we order the Lefse and the Swedish Hash. Yummmm! Broder Söder is an absolute gem of a Swedish café, tucked inside the Nordic Northwest center on Portland's west side. It may be a bit hidden, but once you find it, you're rewarded with a beautifully modern space featuring huge glass windows, warm wood-beam walls, and peaceful forest views. Parking is easy with a small lot up front and plenty of overflow in the side lots. They don't take reservations, so expect to add your name to the list during busy times. Our Sunday brunch wait for a party of four was about 45 minutes, but it flew by--we grabbed coffee, browsed the gift shop and exhibits, and even walked the short trail to see the famous Thomas Dambo "Ole Bolle" troll. Such a fun way to pass the time! The menu offers a wonderful selection of Scandinavian dishes plus excellent hot and cold coffee and tea options. Even the little details shine--my coffee came with lukewarm cream, which felt like a thoughtful touch. We shared the Æbleskiver (Danish Pancakes) with lingonberry jam and lemon curd, and they were absolutely delicious. For my main, I ordered the Pytt I Panna Swedish Hash with chicken sausage--hearty, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. Service was spot-on. Our server checked in just the right amount, kept our coffees filled, cleared plates promptly, and let us linger and chat after finishing our meal. You want a not-so-average breakfast? Then definitely come check this place out. Been here previously, and this second time around was just as memorable for me, and I'm betting it will be for anyone else. First off, the ambiance is quite nice. Located in the Nordia House cultural center, it is pretty casual, and has a few tables, some nice garden views, and cool little gift shop you can check out. The service here is also fantastic! The staff are incredibly friendly, and they do a bang-up job dishing up orders. Be aware this is a bit pricier of a brunch spot, but you are getting some pretty unique and absolutely delicious fare. Also, you can expect a good chance of a wait, as they are pretty popular. So either get here early or see if they take reservations. This morning, we started off with some of their specialty mimosas; with lingonberry syrup and aquavit, this was very refreshing. And for an appetizer we ordered some of the "Æbleskiver", the round little pastries kind of halfway between pancakes and donut holes. Coming out with lingonberry jam and lemon curd, these are just amazing when you have them piping hot. For the entrees, we both went with the "Pytt I Panna", which is this sort of hash of potatoes, yams, peppers and onions, along with some smoked trout, and topped with two lovely over-easy baked eggs. This was really fantastic, and paired well with an extra side order of their roasted seasonal vegetables and rye toast. All in all, this second time around has cemented Broder Söder on my list of favorite places to eat when I visit Portland. For sure will be returning one day, and I'll have to try out some of their other locations, too. I've eaten at Broder Soder several times, as well as at their other locations, and Soder remains my favorite. That's probably partly because it's closest to home -- and partly because, honestly, who can resist Ole Bolle? I never feel particularly "adventurous" here, but I think that's because even when the dishes are unique, the ingredients are seasonal, familiar, and local. It's the perfect combination for a comfortable, satisfying breakfast. The baked eggs are probably my favorite dish, though I've never had anything I didn't enjoy. Service is consistently fantastic, and the space itself is a delight. The huge windows make it feel bright and airy, and there's something so cozy about sipping coffee and enjoying abelskiver while watching the rain come down outside. Not a bad wait at all though! It was our first time coming here. It's very Scandinavian. The carved wooden doors are beautiful and the design of this place is so aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Lots of intention went into this place, making it not just a place to enjoy good food but a place for Nordic people to gather and celebrate their heritage. The food is delicious. I ordered the breakfast bowl and a side of pork sausages with their hibiscus lemonade. My husband enjoyed their savory Lefse breakfast. All of this was so tasty! I loved my breakfast bowl. It is perfect for vegans and those who are looking for something gluten free. I liked the mustard that went with my pork sausage. It wasn't spicy. My husband was very full from the Lefse breakfast, and he said he loved the cheese and mushroom filling with the eggs on top. One thing I will note is that there is no soy milk for a milk substitution. There is only oat milk, so if you're unable to have oatmilk, you may want to try their lemonade drinks and forego the speciality hot drinks (they sound delicious!). Take a quick walk on their trail outside to the troll! There is a Fogelbo home you can tour too. It was closed when we went, so we'll be back next time to tour that. This place is family friendly. Finally came back here with friends visiting and pro tip get here when they open at 8am to be seated right away! You can explore the grounds with Ole Bolle Troll before and after your meal if you have kids - makes it a fun adventure! Casey was our waitress and she was so kind, friendly, and patient with my toddler. I loved that they gave her a reusable metal drinking cup! Of course the food is fresh, flavorful, and delicious! I got my lavender cold brew again with the perfect amount of floral essence and my friend's cardamom latte was creamy as well. Excellent and unique brunch in a lovely, tranquil setting! I was able to try a variety from the menu including the Golden Milk & Honey Latte, the Toffee Nut Cold Brew, the ableskiver pancakes, "Lost Eggs", and savory lefse breakfast. My favorite was the Lost Eggs which came in its own cute mini cast iron skillet ad had a delightful creamy on the inside / slightly crisp on the outside texture. I wouldn't usually go for smoked ham but did in this case and it was really perfect! The lefse breakfast also had a great texture going on with the crepes but the eggs were a little over for me. I did love the red pepper sauce that came with this dish. The ableskiver were a great way to start the meal and came out quite fast, with sides of lemon curd and lingonberry jam. The pancakes themselves were quite plain as you would typically expect for traditional American pancakes, so I personally liked them best loaded up with jam! Minimal and clean Scandinavian restaurant at the Nordia house. Parking is convenient, there was a bit of a line to check in with the host, but we were sat immediately. For drinks, we ordered the lingonberry lemonade and the strawberry matcha latte. The lemonade was really good, super refreshing. Gorgeous location! I was just in awe!! I also just love Nordic design; it's so simple, clean lines, airy and bright! When you come, there may be a wait, but you can walk around the beautiful building and landscape...located in the Nordic cultural center. And Ole Bolle is here!!! Food was so good! I highly recommend getting it with both the mushrooms and the ham!! The toasts that come on the side are kind of dry, but the main entrees shined so much, it didn't matter. My son got the Ableskiver Danish pancakes and he loved it! They're a little dense, but they were so fun to eat. We stopped in for lunch on a Sunday around 11:30. After reading other reviews, we knew there would be a wait for a table, so we immediately put our name in at the podium. The very nice lady told us it would be 45-60 mins. There were only 2 in our party. We then headed to the Ole Bolle Troll trail to explore the grounds outside. After visiting the Troll, we came back in to go through the gift shop, look at the artwork in the waiting area and go through the museum to learn about the culture. After doing all that, we only waited about 10-15 mins for our table. We ordered the Danish pancake balls, Swedish meatballs, and Norwegian crepes (lefse). Everything tasted great! We ate every bite and were stuffed when we left. Our order was taken promptly after being seated and our food came out timely. They don't rush you at all. This place was soso close to being perfect. I love that it's housed inside of Nordia House which is also connected to a nice green space that you can walk around before or after a meal. On their own, both of them got great qaulity ingredients and were very well-made. The crepe was so crispy and filled with delicious hearty vegetables on top of a bed of carrot sauce. Somehow, Broder managed to make a location that's even more quaint than their previous location(s)! It's located in a Norwegian museum/center with a nice, minimalist indoor/outdoor aesthetic. The food is the same: amazing. Scandinavia isn't known for its amazing cuisine, but you wouldn't know it if your only exposure to with was the Broder restaurants! Broder Söder was one of my highly anticipated meals of 2024, and it did not disappoint! I rarely have the chance to try Scandinavian food, so I was extremely excited to stop by. To start, there will likely be a wait (especially on the weekend), but there is a small Nordic store you can shop around in, as well as a really cool surrounding property with a wooden troll. There are much worse places to have to wait for a table! The restaurant does a great job of getting people in and out, as it isn't huge and has limited tables. We ordered the danish pancake balls, which were great for the most part, minus the cold one sitting on top. I ordered the savory lefse breakfast and thought it was just amazing. This is something I would eat daily if I could!! My boyfriend ordered pytt I panna, and he was a little underwhelmed. It seemed like a veggie hash, with little variation between bites. It was a dish we both felt a bit bored of a few bites in. Overall, I would definitely stop by again when I am back in Oregon! This was our first breakfast stop on our trip to Portland. We had a slight wait but it was not bad at all. There is an area in the back you can explore with giant tree trolls (I think), which is perfect for some photos. They have a small gift shop with fun trinkets and miniature charm's etc. Food was good over all. Their coffee drinks were good. The fisk smorgasbord was a crowd favorite. I love anything pickled so it was right up my alley with the pickled fish, veggies, and dips. I wasn't a fan of the smoked salmon, but I never am a fan of lox.
