It is the first glass blowing…read morecollective I've ever been to and it happens to be in East Decatur not that far from where I live. I first learned about Atlanta Hot Glass through the Emory Alumni Association, as strange as that may sound. I'm an alum of Emory (in case the comment above didn't make it obvious) and when I received the latest newsletter about upcoming events and goings on, an event about an interactive glass blowing night caught my attention. Fast forward two weeks and my boyfriend and I showed up at Atlanta Hot Glass, owned by Emory alum Susan Chin, and were introduced to the fascinating world of glass blowing. Let me tell you, it's harder than it looks, but lucky for all of us (there were about 20 people there in all), the instructors were fantastic. In addition to helping us make our own blown glass ornaments, they showed us some awesome examples of what you can make once you've gotten more skilled at it. We learned how hot the glass has to be to be malleable (it's kept in a 2050 degree furnace), how hot the 'glory holes' are that melt the glass shards and color the glass (2200 degrees), how glass sculptures are molded and shaped and transferred to the oven to cool down, etc. It was incredible and eye-opening and really fun. I thoroughly enjoyed myself since everyone was so friendly and willing to answer questions and assist us. Susan's cousin was great because he explained to us what was happening as the instructors were demonstrating making different pieces and when I was making my own blown glass ornament, my instructor (whose name escapes me), talked me through each step and why we did it. Atlanta Hot Glass also offers classes, studio time and opens itself up to the public like it did for Emory that night, which is great. Even if you're not sure that's your thing, you can take a course or a couple individual classes to figure out if it might be. A big kudos to the Emory Alumni Association for organizing this event and to Susan for kindly opening her studio to us. It was a fantastic and unique way to spend a Thursday.

After visiting the website, I called and spoke with Susan. She was extremely helpful and gave me lots of information. I chose the "Hands on Experience" for nine people. The process for payment and scheduling was very smooth and professional. Upon arriving, our team was greeted by the instructors, Lee and Jeremy. We were given safety tips and general information about glass blowing. Then we jumped right in. We had a blast! We each created a glass piece (paperweights and ornaments) and had a true "hands-on experience". I highly suggest this activity to large groups and small! For large groups I suggest keeping the pieces simple to allow time for your entire group to have a chance.

Now that there is new management, we had hopes for families involved and were extremely disappointed to find out that a parent of a very talented School of Rock student received an email threatening enrollment because another student accused her of "blowing" at him. The student in question is very talented and has been a part of School of Rock for 5 years. There were no witnesses to this "blowing at," and it was not captured on camera. The complaining parent stated that the girl made her son uncomfortable because the accused student is on the Autism Spectrum. School of Rock could have used this moment to educate others about neurodiversity, but did not. FYI, School of Rock had no prior instances or concerns about the talented student prior to this one complaint

I have never felt the need to give a negative review but I have no second thoughts about leaving a review for Applerouth's SAT course. It is the definition of a waste of money, and I want people to know what they are getting into. Here are things that happened while I took the SAT prep class: During one of the practice SATs, a cockroach crawled up my leg and obviously distracted me from my test. My teacher didn't offer to help and acted scared. I had to kill it myself while my time was running out. To add on, there was no AC in the building. Unless you are a cockroach, why in the world would you want to marinate for 2 1/2 hours in a building without AC in the MIDDLE OF JULY. All of the people taking the test were genuinely sweating. Next! I had two teachers who each taught about 4 classes, so 8 in total, and I think my knowledge may have regressed. The first guy seriously taught like he was picked off the street and asked "do you know how to add?" and then was hired. He tried to make jokes that weren't funny and he didn't have the basic knowledge to teach an SAT class. Once we were doing a problem and I got my answer, shared my answer, and he said we will see if I'm right at the end of the problem. So then the whole class works through the problem about 90%, and goes onto the next problem. I asked what the final answer was, because he never shared it, and guess what he said!! He said "oh I didn't work out the whole problem cause my knowledge stops at Algebra 1"! what I'm sorry what I honestly thought I was getting pranked. How are you teaching an SAT class and you don't work out the full problem??? I jumped for joy when I went to a class and he wasn't our teacher anymore! But my hopes were too high, because the next lady shocked me even more! She was late to EVERY class, at least 30 mins but more than likely an hour late. First of all, that is disrespectful of our time. And if teenagers can be on time to an SAT class, what the hell is up with an adult that can't?? Low bar people, low bar. She also, didn't teach well. Better than the guy, but not well at all. I was about to loose my shit when she wasn't even phased that she was late. If I was late, you wouldn't be hearing the end of my sorrys. I just don't get it, if you choose the time of the class as the teacher, BE THERE ON TIME To wrap this mess up, do not send your kid here if you're a parent or don't choose this SAT class if you're a student.
