Our experience at Maverick Whiskey was top notch! We took our teenage boys out to enjoy a family dinner and would rank the food and atmosphere up with some of the top restaurants in San Antonio. We started off with the charcuterie board which was amazing! The entrees for the four of us included the bison filet, scallops and my son and I shared the tomahawk! My fiancé and I were spurred this past Friday evening to go out when we found Maverick Whiskey online. Seeing their website we decided to make a reservation and try them out. We found a really cozy and casual atmosphere at their restaurant above the distillery. We had a full flight of their whiskeys and some of their other products in their homemade cocktails. We ran into an issue with our meal and the staff of Ruth our server and the manager Mr. Fey proceeded to correct and make sure our experience that night was not ruined. We learned a lot about the culture and history of the business and will definitely be returning for their excellent customer service and professionalism. I thought we would try this place out for a nice Father's Day dinner. We have eaten at quite a few places in San Antonio in the year we have lived here and I will tell you we will not return. The food was okay, but definitely not worth the prices. We tried to order several things, but they were out of almost everything on the menu. We made reservations and there was hardly anyone in the restaurant so I am not quite sure how most menu items were out. First and foremost......not real happy about being hit up twice by very aggressive bums just outside the front door. On way in AND on way out. Not real sure how a place so small with owner involvement can be so bad. Unless the owner himself / herself has absolutely 0 knowledge on how to run anything. Service was TERRIBLE, non existent and place was not crowded. Actually had to flag down our waitress to order drinks and food. Food was very expensive, small portions, and TERRIBLE. Better steak at Texas Roadhouse and 1/3 the price. Whiskey is just BAD. I agree with prior posts, this stuff needs to age. Vodka drink (I guess that is what it was??) was horrible. I am always searching to see who has the best old fashioned and I heard about this place. So I made it a point to make it a date night. Ordered the ribeye which was average with a different seasoning than a normal steak would have. The old fashion was flavorful with the right amount of mixture. I tried to see what was used in the old fashion to give it a oak flavor with a bit of spice but was not given the information. I believe they use Alamo bourbon until their whiskey is aged. Why would anyone sell unaged whiskey or even 3 day old whiskey? All of their liqour is awful and should not be sold to people for at least 3 years after it has matured. Even the cocktails can't mask the awful moonshine flavor of their liqour. Do yourself a favor and just order beer. The food was good but my ribeye tasted like they used kerosene to cook it. Epic fail. We were given a gift certificate that was supposed to include a tour and tasting. The first time we called they weren't quite ready to give tours, so please call back in a few weeks. The second time we called, the lady who does the tours wasn't there, but a tour was scheduled for the following Tuesday at 5:00pm (tours are ONLY available Tue or Thur or Sat at 5:00pm). We ubered down and arrived right on time, but no one even knew who we were. The lady who gives the tours was sick; no one called to tell us. We're already out $16.00 because there is NO PARKING anywhere near the distillery. The nearest place is an pricey garage several blocks away. No other customers were there. Dinner menu was ridiculously overpriced. We're waiting for the lady who gives the tours to either call us or refund the cost of the gift certificate to the person who bought it for us. Folks, you shouldn't be selling gift certificates for experiences you don't actually offer. read more

Despite the weird Covid times we are all faced with Dan managed to give my boyfriend and I an outstanding tour with a very interesting history lesson to go along with it. "Come and take it" lol I was VERY impressed!! Will certainly go back next time I'm visiting San Antonio. My only one star moment was ME not purchasing a bottle of the fantastic whiskey that I thoroughly enjoyed. I will be looking for that hopefully to be in stores soon. We went to Maverick Whiskey for a late lunch on a Friday afternoon. We had the restaurant almost to ourselves. The service was exceptional as was the building. The food was hit and miss, but mostly skewed to the good. We began the meal with the flight of deviled eggs. We received four different varieties, pork belly, bacon jam, chicken salad, and pimento cheese. By far our favorite was the pimento cheese, least favorite the chicken salad, and the other two were a little bit on the bland side. My partner had the whiskey pork chops on citrus greens with sweet potato. He said the pork chops were perfect! The sweet potatoes were good, but the greens were undercooked and bitter. I had a bowl of their beer cheese soup, which was delicious! No complaints at all about that soup. We enjoyed a couple of their house-brewed​ beers which were tasty and true to style. We will definitely go back and bring friends. It is that different and innovative. read more

This is a 2 part review: part 1: 5/5 stars: Went while visiting SA. We mostly came bc we love whiskey & they have a tour. We arrived early so we went upstairs to get a "snack" & a drink. We decided on the deviled egg flight. The pimento cheese & bacom jam ones were our favorite. I got the Travis Park Fizz. It was really tasty & a little after kick (i think its the ginger beer). My sister got the Prickly Pear Margarita. It was very good! Part 2: 3/5 stars: When it was tour time We headed downstairs. The tour started with the history of The maverick family. This part was a little bit long. It would've been interesting to hear more about the building and their distillery process. The history about Mr. Maverick took about 40 minutes and the other things were squeezed into 20 minutes total. The tasting was afterwards and their whiskey is amazing! read more

The whiskey is good but the flight samples are the size of a thimble, not worth the price. Went up stairs to try the beer and had a nice conversation with the owner. We were planning a homecoming party for a family member that just graduated from basic training. Tried to order another beer and the bar tender closed our tab and said that he didn't feel comfortable giving us another beer. We weren't loud or obnoxious, yet he decided he wasn't going to give us a beer. We spoke to the owner about it and he gave us every excuse under the sun, but none of them made sense. My only conclusion is that they are not military friendly, which is unfortunate in a military community. I would avoid this establishment and go to the Devils River distillery, they are generous with their pours and appreciate military. Very sad that one person can ruin an otherwise pleasant experience. Stay away if you like the military. read more

Hosted a company happy hour here. They were very welcoming and easy to work with when making the reservation for a private event. We had the back room to ourselves and the service was excellent. I ordered a flight of their whiskeys and gin (their gin was lovely!), had a taste of most of their appetizers, and ordered the salmon and pie for dessert. I enjoyed their food a little bit more than their selection of spirits, but everything was very good. read more

We did an Anniversary staycation downtown. Decided to check out maverick whiskey for dinner. The gin was delicious, the old fashioned was pretty good albeit a bit sweet. The porter beer was awesome. Dinner was ok. Nothing spectacular but decent. Husband had the red fish I had the maverick airline chicken. Okra appetizer was good, enjoyed the chipotle aioli. Loved it. Went for lunch on a Wednesday. Very small seating area (maybe 15 tables) but only 4 tables were taken. Their loss because the food was really good. My friend ate a burger and wolfed it down. I think she mumbled through a mouthful that is was great. House made chips were okay. Could have used a little more... salt? Seasoning? Something! I had a fried pimento cheese/bacon on toasted sourdough. Yumm meeee! But then we got the pecan pie and Mexican Vanilla ice cream. WOW! Should have taken a picture because words can't describe. There are not a lot of places that have this much charm. The restored bank building is incredible and not only is every aspect of the restoration and the buildout top-notch, the attention to detail is unparalleled and wreaks of authenticity. Food is served on the second floor, so you have to know it is there. I've been twice in the week they have been open. I had the burger and the Thai Fighter sandwich, both were great, and the staff was friendly and attentive. You can't beat the atmosphere. Threw my girlfriend a birthday party here for 13 people to include the tour. Excellent service and the tour and tour guide was superb. Manager was knowledgeable and gave an excellent tour and Ande made a to die for five layer velvet cake. Oh, let's not forget the whiskey, although just distilled it has a nice distinct taste but in a couple years, those barrels will be filled with some of the nest whiskey in San Antonio. So much history and thanks Dr. maverick for keeping that history alive in San Antonio. The service was terrible. It took over an hour for us to get our appetizers.(after several inquiries) The fried okra came out cold. The two cheese boards come out without any crackers or bread. Great atmosphere.....the deviled egg flight was phenomenal! Highly recommend the chicharron crusted salmon...unlike anything I've had before!
