We had Mavs pizza last weekend and loved it. Great crust, perfect cook. I wish I would have written a review then, but didn't. Anywho, we ordered again tonight (one Mediterranean and one basic cheese) and it was an unfortunate disappointment. The spinach on the Med tasted terrible (old) and ruined the pizza. The cheese pizza was burnt and dry--the crust incredibly hard and tough to eat. The red sauce on their pizzas is fantastic, and when the crust isn't overdone it's crisp and tasty. I tried my first Maverick's pizza based on their excellent reviews. The Mediterranean was full of fresh vegetables, feta, olives, and very good. However, I prefer a crunchy crust and mine certainly was not. It was so soft that it wasn't possible to pick up a piece without it falling apart. I had to roll it up to get something off the plate. If I could get a more crunchy crust, I'd go back, but otherwise, not. read more

Got a taco pizza. Bruschetta, and I was told I could not get a Philly sandwich because "it was Friday night and they are too busy for sandwiches." I got a small personal Philly pizza instead. The bruschetta was dry and all of the tomatoes had fallen to one side. Fine. Can deal. Not great bruschetta, moving on. The Taco pizza I was expecting was to be taco sauce, taco meat, cheesy and with some lettuce and salsa. Asked for the salsa on the side. I got the most sad, don't think it had cheese at all drier than the desert pizza with lettuce and chips to hide this fact. It was cardboard. The salsa on the side included 6 tiny pieces of tomatoes and two tiny onions. The saving grace was this personal Philly pizza. Delicious actually! Called about the taco pizza. It was inedible. Told it was the owner who dropped it off to me and was still out for deliveries. Was told the owner cared and would call me within a half hour. An hour later, no call. I called back. Went to voicemail on. Friday night at 8:30. Call d back again at 9:00. Went to voicemail. This was a treat for us tonight and cost over $40 with tip. So ready to give the benefit of the doubt and have a replacement. The owner seemed really nice and sincere at the door... nope, he never called, the store didn't answer 2x after an hour and a half of the first call to say it wasn't right. Bummer. The Philly pizza was great. They don't have great customer service. Would never recommend. read more

Our first time ordering from here. We had a hankering for cheese fries so got the garlic cheese bread. It was more done than I expected but I am not afraid of some char. This is one of my favorite neighborhood gems. I first started going here because I get my hair done at the Soapbox Salon next door. Their cranberry chicken salad is amazing!! Recently, I had their pizza and it also was very good. They have numerous specialty pizzas with unique flavors and diverse toppings. Can't say enough about this place. They sampled it at a local bar and I've been hooked ever since. Pizzas are all really good. Nice selection of uncommon 'flavors', but I have to say the JoJos are my favorite thing on the menu. I order a side of them every time. The flavor is crazy good. I just tried the wings and ribs tonight and the ribs were way more than I expected for $5! Better than any I've had in a while... And they come with a side of JoJos :) I've never been disappointed by anything I've ordered here, and the friendly service is the cherry on top! First time trying last minute. The pizza was good but there is room for improvement. The crust was ok, but a little over cooked and cardboardish. The sauce was a bit too spicey and salty. More cheese please. The price was a little high but average based on other pizza joints. I will try again. read more

I'm originally from New Jersey where great pizza is easy to find. I wouldn't call mavericks great pizza, but it's the second best I've had in the twin cities area and I get it frequently as it's very close to my abode. They have the best antipasto salad I've had in Minnesota and their wings are also very good. read more

Great service, great pizzas, good price! Our favorite is the Canadian bacon-pineapple: not too salty. The margarita is unique too.

One of my classmates has a weekly pizza night tradition and this was her highest rated joint. I had to try some based on her praises. She was not bluffing, their pizza is top quality and the service is stellar. We got two custom 12 in. pizzas; hawaiian and artichokes with mushrooms 'n onions. Both were spectacular; perfect amount of sauce, heavenly crust, rockin' cheese! I'm lovin' it! Antipasto salad was loaded with the good stuff. A foodie's pizza. Good, honest sauce and a tasty flat crust (that thankfully isn't cut into squares, a truly inane practice). A lot of inventive, beef-related toppings, which is good for someone who avoids pork, and though the sizes may seem small, the slices are filling. read more

Based on the reviews I was excited to try their pizza. I got a taco pizza delivered. The pizza was dry and over cooked. The taco meat was too blackened to detect the seasoning. The lettuce was too high brow for taco pizza, ice berg or romaine would have been a lighter, better choice. Not even worth putting the left-overs (most of it) in the fridge for tomorrow. read more

Great Pizza. The best we've had in many years. We arrived at the Goring hotel late with the whole family. A quick bite sounded good so we walked around the block to find Mavericks. With a 2 year old in tow it looked perfect. Mary or Mari (a cute young French gal) was a sweetheart. The baby loved her. My pizza was fantastic and my wife said her "Bianco" was the best ever. That's quite a recommendation. The vibe is hip; not pretentious. Definitely a stop for great pizza. read more

This might be the best pizza in the Twin Cities. I've had Lola, Luce, Punch, Broders, and this ranks at or near the top of the bunch (its a close call with Broders). We've had a few different types of pizza here, and they were all good, but the BBQ was just exceptional. This is just the type of place we need more of in St Paul. Plus, the owner (I'm assuming that's who we spoke to) was really friendly. Nice selection of gourmet sodas like the magnificent Cheerwine and Sebastian Joes ice cream for dessert. I really enjoy the supreme pizza and it's the pizza take out choice of my family. We often also get the antipasti, I would highly recommend both of these. We have had this pizza twice now and it is very good. We haven't had much luck finding a great pizza that we like in Highland Park but now we have. Overall the pizza has great flavor without the grease. The sausage and the sauce have great flavor. The crust is tasty and not soggy. bought a crowd cut and stopped after a wild game!! We did not realize it was just take out and delivery! We live in Eden Prairie. We decided to get the pizza as a take and bake. They told us it would be 35 minutes!! Crazy!! We were right outside when we called!! I decided to go inside and wait!! There was a young gal taking orders and a young guy in the back. He had taken one pizza out and cut it. otherwise he just kind of walked around, they had several tickets up. The girl kept telling the callers 35 minutes!! I don't know how they could when no one was making pizzas! I asked if they had a delivery person because it was just the two of them!! Very disorganized!! It took awhile for us to get our pizza but the quality was excellent. We don't eat pork in our household so we were looking for a pizza place that would deliver in the neighborhood and would offer more non-pork meat options. We tried the Philly Beef and it was delicious! The meat was nicely seasoned and very tender, the crust was the perfect thickness and had just the right amount of sauce (we don't like a ton of sauce). We also ordered the garlic cheese bread which is more like small cheese pizza. The bread also was seasoned perfectly and you were already too taste both the cheese and garlic. The prices are about what you'd pay at any chain pizza place. I will definitely be ordering from Mavericks again. read more

Mavericks makes the best pie in the Twin Cities IMO. Everything else out here is either too dainty or too much like fast food pizza. Mavericks nails it with their sloppy and well-done pie. A+ Antipasto as well. read more

I consider myself to be a pizza connoisseur. Along with ice cream, it is my favorite food. I could literally eat it every day of the week. I like it from franchises, frozen, homemade, but my favorite is always from little independent pizza shops. Well, one night while over at my grandma's house, I was looking to get a pizza and not just something from Green Mill or Luce which were in the area and I had had plenty of times before. So, I queued up the Urban Spoon app on my phone for $ (cheap) pizza near me and Maverick's showed up with a 90% approval rating with enough reviews that it seemed legit. I checked out their website and decided on the Bruschetta (8" hand tossed crust topped with homemade basil pesto and tomatoes) and a Large Sausage & Banana Pepper Pizza (thin crust, although was thicker than I imagined). I got to the store and saw that they were part of that Belly program that I'd signed up for a while ago and never seem to see it anywhere. Well, I scanned my ID and turns out that I got a free 1/2 pint of Izzy's ice cream or free Garlic Bread. The fellow said he would take off the Bruschetta instead, which was really nice of him. Got back to my grandma's house and tried the Bruschetta first and it blew me away how much flavor was packed into this little pizza. There must have been like 3 or 4 tomatoes that had been sliced on top. They didn't skimp on the ingredients on something that they only charged $5 for when this would easily be a $12 pizza from Punch or a similar neo pizza. As for the 16" pizza, I was a little surprised when I opened it and saw that their thin crust was more the thickness of Pizza Luce than like a Carbone's thin-crust, but it didn't bother me at all, just something different than expected. Again, this pizza was packed with flavor and had sausage and peppers aplenty! The sausage had just enough spice that anyone could enjoy without it being too hot. Overall, this place gets an easy 5/5 from me and I cannot wait to try it again. Will definitely be getting the Bruschetta again and want to try out one of their many specialty pizzas as well. read more

My family recently moved to the Highland neighborhood and tried several local pizza restaurants. We ordered from Mavericks 3 times within 10 days. The first two delivery experiences were quite good, so much so, I was going to buy a $100 gift card for my property management. Our final experience however, our order was incorrect and the owner made a big deal about it. Red onions were added to our pizza. We called back in to see what could be done. The staff person I spoke with offered a credit or to remake the pizza. I asked her to remake the pizza as the onions totally changed the flavor of our pizza and we couldn't eat it. I offered to return the pizza to the delivery driver. She told everyone the pizza would be out as soon as possible. I thought the issue was settled, but 2 minutes later, the owner Mitch calls me back. He asks if someone is allergic to onions or why we couldn't eat the pizza. I was surprised at his attitude. He tried to blame my teenage son, who placed the order while I read it to him, so I know my son did not ask for onions. Mitch then says he can't get a pizza out to us quickly and it would be at least an hour. I preferred a remade pizza, but since he made such a huge deal about their mistake, I told him to credit us for the pizza and they can pick it up or we will throw it. Verdict: Decent food, not-so-great customer service. Won't order again. read more
