Every single time I visit Tono, there's a new favorite pizza on my list! Love this spot, amazing deal on Tuesdays. The line is always long on BOGO days but it moves pretty quickly. Yummy sauces with a couple choices to pick from (hot honey, balsamic, honey ranch, buffalo sauce, honey garlic dipping sauce, etc.). Staff has always been super fast and friendly, space is a bit small for how many customers they normally have, but most take out anyways so I have been getting my dine-in table pretty quickly (10-15 mins wait time). Was pleasantly surprised by the quality of food here and the fast pickup. We'd passed here frequently when visiting family and wondered what they were up to. The unlimited COMPLIMENTARY sauces, the service, the open kitchen and the variety of different menu items to choose from makes Tono one of my favorite family owned chains in MN! Their Spicy Tono is SO GOOD! Their pizzas are perfectly cooked and have just the right amount of sauce and toppings so that they're never soggy. I've tried their cheesesteaks which are equally delicious, but I always come back to their pizzas. The only downside of this place is that it is an artisan eatery and the prices reflect that. Steak was 4/5, although it could have used a bit fattier cut, great flavor and bun, however it could have used Cooper Sharp, and for a double meat it was pretty spendy without the Cooper Sharp cheese imported from Philly. Tono is a growing local chain that is definitely worth checking out if you like either pizza or cheesesteaks. And if you like both, you will be faced with a dilemma because they are good at both. The cheesesteaks are big and gristly and drippy, with lots of options to make them your own plus some special concoctions of their own. They are served on a bed of french fries, and it is nearly impossible for the fries not to be taken over by the flood of ingredients that the cheesesteak can't contain. Their pizza is something they can be really proud of. It is high quality and they have a number of unique inventions, like ones that use a pesto cream sauce and several that use hot honey. My favorite is the Spicy Tono, but there are lots to try. The portion sizes are generous and if you peep the condiments area you'll see they stock a huge variety of sauces. They're not just for the sandwiches either; they believe in pizza dipping. I haven't come around to that myself, but that doesn't matter because their undipped pizza is totally great. Great spot right across the street from Mcalester college. My husband is from Philadelphia and of course he struggles to find the foods he loves in the twin cities. I came across the Yelp page for Tono and was excited to see that they claim to have authentic cheesesteaks. We gave them a try and were not disappointed! The cheesesteak tastes very similar to those we get in Philly! The restaurant is clean, well organized sized and the employees were friendly. Offer a savory pizza without all the sugar, honey, carmelized onions (sugar added) sweet sauce, you have to build your own pizza and select savory items and get olive oil instead of sauce to avoid this chef's penchant to make everything so sweet. It's a pizza for God's sake not a dessert. Even with their adding a new ingredient... it's a hot honey. I so want to like this place but my partner won't let me get pizza here anymore because we prefer Italian inspired pizza and not this diabetic fusion. Salads are good with lots of sweet dressings. They sell cookies and pop. The cheesesteaks are so sloppy they could use a more robust bread to hold the filling. This is a menu that should be tweaked by a real food professional and not an owner who has a sweet tooth and it would have lines given its being so close to a college and rapid transit stop. Their big, sloppy cheesesteak sandwich is SO GOOD! I was just going to take a quick bite before getting a photo, but somehow ate almost all of it without stopping to breathe. I got one with onions, green pepper and mushrooms, and just half meat, but even that was bursting at the seams. They smother it in garlic aioli and your choice of cheese (I chose Cheez whiz, of course) and put it on a pile of fries. It seems like too much sauce at first, but when you realize that you can also dip the fries in the sauce, it's just the right amount. We also got a margherita pizza, which was tasty too. I love Tono; they're within biking distance of our house & are definitely a rival to Punch in terms of pizzas. The store itself is okay, it's definitely funcional over being cute. The staff have always been really kind & helpful, though. Today we learned that this location has a Tuesday special where you buy a pizza & drink, get a pizza & drink free! They're calling it Tono Tuesday, which is cute. A lot of college kids showed up for the special, so beware that your wait may be longer on a Tuesday. I get the Margherita pizza, which is a classic. It's perfectly salty & I've never had it be overcooked. My only complaint is that the toppings tend to all slide off when you take a bite, usually when it's gotten a bit colder. Overall, though, this is a super tasty pizza. I really like that they have cups of sauces available, too; the balsamic reduction & hot honey are really good. My husband got the Spicy Tono but said he wished he would've ordered the standard Tono, just because it has more toppings. After two disappointing cheesesteak orders I'm happy to say I've found my dream cheesesteak! The mushroom with provolone, extra onion and mushrooms is awesome. To their credit, they did issue a gift card to reimburse me for my first disappointing order. That's good customer service, and made me want to keep trying them. My one complaint, which is fairly minor, is the over salting of the fries. Way too much, the flavor is totally dominated with salt. Otherwise, this is my favorite meal at the moment. Edit: my latest order just arrived and it's just ridiculously delicious. Easily the best cheesesteak I've ever had. I removed one star for the over salting of the fries. Their reviews made me want to try both the No. 12 Tono pizza (red sauce, sausage, pepperoni, caramelized onions, caramelized tomatoes, Tono red chili oil) and the No. 1 South Philly cheesesteak (steak, house made cheese whiz, grilled onions, and I added garlic aioli). Pizza: I was a little caught off guard with the sweetness of the pizza. With those ingredients I didn't expect that flavor component (I'm definitely not a pineapple on pizza guy) so at first I was a little disappointed but as I continued to eat the slice, it grew on me and I really ended up enjoying it. Talk about a rollercoaster of emotions lol. Also don't believe what others might say, that red chili oil is spicy (particularly if you don't like spice). Cheesesteak: Phenomenal beyond words. I've never personally had a cheesesteak on the east coast but it was pretty darn good! My biggest mistake was not trusting the process and adding garlic aioli, which was smothered on top of the cheese whiz and kind of overpowered some of the taste. Thankfully I was able to scrape most of it off but the cheesesteak was phenomenal. Truffle fries were just OK, they looked good but there wasn't much truffle oil to be found so it tasted more like straight up parm fries, which is fine, but I was expecting more truffle taste. I'd pass on the fries next time. Eating at Tono's Pizzeria is your ticket to flavor-town. Just choose wisely, or try a bunch of things from the menu with a group of friends.
