Not going to lie -- I was skeptical. But Tuesday night dance lessons at Mavericks turned out to be a really fun surprise. A few helpful things to know: * $2 cover charge per person * Bring your ID no matter how old you are * Doors open at 6pm with food service and open dancing/practice time The food menu is WAY bigger than what's shown online, which was a pleasant surprise. They also have $2 beef or chicken tacos until 9pm, and overall the food-to-price value is solid. At 7pm, they start the dance lessons: * Line dancing lesson (~40 minutes) * Followed by either partner two-step or swing dancing (alternates every other week) The crowd was all ages (21+ obviously -- and let's just say I'm on the older side), all skill levels, and very beginner-friendly. I'm pretty uncoordinated, and honestly this was some of the best line dancing instruction I've had. After 9pm, lessons end/open dancez A couple practical tips: * There's really nowhere to stash your stuff, so keep it simple -- pockets or a fanny pack work great * Wear closed-toe shoes if possible unless you want your toes stepped on * No one is judging style here, which actually made it more comfortable and fun Overall: low pressure, affordable, welcoming, and a genuinely good time. read more

I've been here a few times and I will continue to return when in the area, but with appropriate expectations. The food is okay, service at the bar tables is meh (at best). They're friendly, but don't pay much attention to you. They don't have a draft beer menu so you have to squint at the board behind the bar. Lots of TVs showing sports, which is great. Incredibly fun! When my friends asked me "do you want to go to a bar tonight?", I was definitely not expecting the energy Maverick's brought in the slightest. I mean this in quite literally the best way possible. We had a great time (I just had no clue it was a country bar). When you enter, you pay the cover charge and are greeted by a giant bucking horse statue. There is a nice little (and free) digital photobooth at the entrance too. You walk into the bar area and BAM there's a mechanical bull! When you walk a little further in, you will be delighted to see a packed dance floor of line dancers grooving together to the beat. On this Friday night, it was absolutely packed with a diverse crowd. The music wasn't necessarily country but played a majority of the common line dancing hits. Even people that didn't know how to line dance were having a great time. The bartenders were very friendly and quick. We saw the bartender making a delicious-looking drink for the people next to us and we asked for whatever they were having. She told us it was a Moscow Mule with grenadine. It ended up being very tasty. It was not the strongest drink out there but still very good. There is plenty of seating available throughout the bar. There are booths, long benches and tables, and stools close to the dance floor. I noticed that there was a group that reserved some of the long tables for a birthday party (which I will definitely take note of for the future) My group decided to head out and return later. Luckily, because we still had our initial entry stamps on our wrists, we were let back in without facing the cover charge again. My wife and I are in our mid 50s. We were invited to come as a group with her brother's extended relatives/in laws sometime about a year ago. My wife was approached by the security guard or bouncer telling her that bringing in outside drink is not acceptable. We did see some beer cans under our table which were there before we even came but we never brought any drink from the outside. We asked them why he thinks my wife brought outside drinks and he refused to say why. I asked him to look at their cameras as I can see they have it inside their building. On my way out I was asking him the same question and it seems he got more upset as if he's totally convinced of what he's saying. After we left we sent a letter to the manager of the place about it and asked him to review the allegations and their security camera recordings but our complaint got totally dismissed. To be treated like that on an occasion when it should be fun and when they refuse to ascertain their allegations which caused embarrassment to my wife is totally unacceptable. I've been here before and had a great time in the past. Lots of dancers, dancing around. This past wknd was off, the manger on the karaoke side Daniel and the woman bartender were very rude. I tipped well, paid to get in and didn't feel very welcome. The karaoke guy stopped taking candidates all of a sudden when I walked up to him. Very odd! It was very off night. Unfortunately! Simply the most fun place to go line or country dancing in the Bay Area. Currently the night starts with line dance lessons on Fridays and Saturdays, and I believe Tuesdays include a partner dance lesson. On weekends there is a $5-$10 cover. This is located in a strip mall so don't worry if you don't immediately see parking, there's likely parking around the back. Drinks and food are fine bar fare, but the focal point is definitely the dance floor that is often very well-attended and a great time for both line dancing and country swing. read more

HOWEVER, the speakers were very loud and so uncomfortable that a few of our party waited in their cars until the rest of us were ready to leave. The extreme loudness may keep us from coming again. My husband rented the space for my birthday and it was so fun! The party was 3:30-6:30, kids welcome. The staff is real friendly. They had food, a dj, a line dancing class and karaoke. Need to inform the general public when the place is reserved for private parties so we don't have to drive an hour to get there and find out the place is packed before it even opens. If you're going to advertise yourself as a country bar, then you should play country music as heard on the radio, not rap or line dancers music is B.S. Most patrons are new and don't have any sense of dance floor etiquette and should be informed by the instructors or DJ. Like our friends, we too are searching for that next bar with a decent dance floor to open that will play true country music for all and couples. read more

RIP Mavericks. Very sad. Your commemorative wall of donor names of people who paid for your dance floor now represents a graveyard of people who used to love it here but have been grossed out by a trend-chasing new generation with no musicality. The place is officially a joke with most people afraid to tell you what they think, beginning somewhere around the time you hired a social media manager to bring in drunks off the streets who bring drinks on the dance floor and barf in the bathroom. People are so out of it they can't even form basic lines to line dance. With the blind leading the blind in terms of "instructors" who poorly choose lame steps to go with random music. And talentless swing kings who think they are mighty acrobats but haven't seen themselves in a mirror. Most recent experiences include Sofia Clare on stage demanding tips with music beyond healthy decibel. Other bands like Scoville and CConnection with sets that are way too long and drawn out. People who love to dance are bored and appalled. Others think they can dance and act as if they know what they are doing and call it teaching. If you plan to stay open beyond the country trend, please get some standards. read more

The bartender purposely ignored us multiple times. We came up waited our turn and she continued to pretend we weren't there until we spoke up to her. I came two separate times, once by myself, another with a friend who was also asian American, and she treated us both the same way. We went to Mavericks Country Club for line dance lessons and to celebrate a friend's bachelorette party. The place itself looks really nice inside, and the dance floor definitely has a fun energy. That said, the atmosphere didn't feel very welcoming to newcomers. When we got there was no line , the lady at the front no smiles, we asked questions. She didn't want to answer, the bartender wasn't the friendliest, the instructor for the line dancing lessons not personal at all . After the dance lessons floor was crowded, which made it hard for us to join in. We were trying to pick up the moves, but at one point someone told us to move before we got run over, and later the instructor asked us to step off the floor because we might be in the way. It left us feeling a little out of place. In the past, we've gone to the Saddlerack where there were different spaces for traditional line dancing, faster-paced dances, and even freestyle. That setup made it easier for everyone to feel included no matter their level. Mavericks is a nice spot, but it might be better suited for more experienced dancers rather than beginners. read more

I just moved to the area & Saturday was my first night at Mavericks & wow very unfriendly staff let alone the DJ literally told me I had to pay for a song request & from the dj booth he said if you don't know the dance properly stay off the floor. As a kid I always heard about the infamous saddle rack and didn't have the chance to visit the original one that was in San Jose but experienced the Fremont location that has since closed. I've been back and fourth to Nashville and love the line dancing and western theme bars there and was on the hunt for one out here in the Bay Area. I went on a rainy Saturday night and this place was packed! Fun time country line dancing. Got really crowded after 10:00 or so, so get there early. Got there at the very beginning of the line dancing lessons. Instructor was enthusiastic, but didn't rush it. I thought there would be 30 minutes of lessons and then the band would come on, but is more like 90 minutes of lessons. Band was good. Despite it eventually getting crowded, it seemed safe and people seemed happy and in control. Would definitely go again. read more

Great place to have a beer, the atmosphere was amazing, I was served right away. It was short lived though because there was a bartender i had a problem with at another bar, got me thrown out 20 minutes after getting in. I am in no way putting down this place, it was just unfortunate that this person treated me bad at another establishment and i complained about her to her bosses and now I'm getting kicked out of this great establishment. Ordered a Lagunita IPA. It was incredibly sour and tasted awful. Only took a few sips to confirm its horrid taste. Tried to take it back to have it replaced. The old hagrid bar tender said she wouldn't replace it because it was a full beer. It was full because it was expired and tasted like crap. I wasn't trying to cheat them out of a beer. I just assumed that a well off establishment wouldn't find an issue replacing one beer. I used to enjoy this place because of the kind staff and atmosphere but not anymore. read more
