Best Pizza In Or Around Chelmsford. I was holding off writing this review until after I could compare with Joanies. Max and Leo's is without question the best Pizza in the area. Everything about their pizza's are fantastic: perfect crust, excellent sauce, plentiful delicious cheese, lots of super fresh and flavorful toppings, cooked to perfection. Went to the Chelmsford location Giving this place a second chance after the last fiasco here but low and behold we got the same moron waitress, same problem happened she put in my girlfriends order and forgot to put in mine and was so incompetent that she didn't even realize it till my girlfriend was done with her meal and noticed I hadn't received mine.Never again if she did this to the same person twice in 6 months I would bet the farm she does this multiple times or regularly either she's one of the owners wives or is unfireable. read more

We arrived around 6:00 PM on a Saturday to a packed restaurant. We checked in and were told there would be a twenty minute wait. We grabbed a buzzer and headed back to the car to wait. I really do not understand restaurants designed with no place for people to wait for their table to be ready, especially when we are in New England in February. The wait we were quoted was pretty accurate and soon we were seated in a cozy booth, perusing the menu. The space looks nothing like a revamped Friendly's. They did a great renovation and the space is warm and cozy. Before deciding on what to order, we did notice that the space is really loud and we needed to yell across the table to be heard. Back to the menu. So many choices! So many amazing looking pizza options alone! It took us a while to make decisions and we had lots of questions about what items are both gluten and dairy free. Our waitress was very patient in getting us the information. A suggestion for all restaurants: have that information ON THE MENU. Little icons would save your servers time running back to the kitchen to check. We started with the lemon pepper wings with caramelized onions. Really delicious and I am not a wing person. My dining companions also ordered the chipotle wings that I didn't try. Table consensus was that they were good, but the lemon pepper ones are better. We ordered a few custom pizza with lots of toppings. The pizza with garlic olive oil, mozz, sausage and mushrooms was awesome. The best ever garlic bread! My GF DF friend ordered a pizza with a nice assortment of meat and vegetable toppings. She has not had pizza in forever and loved her pie. Former chef friend said the crust was excellent and he is hard to please. The only dinner disappointment was the order of meatballs. The meat was ground too fine so they were dry and had the texture of sawdust. They were missing any real flavor too. I am a meatball snob, growing up with my mom's version that are epic. Overall, we had a great experience at Max and Leo's and can't wait to go back or just order takeout. They have space setup to have outdoor seating for the summer, so that will be nice. read more

I went on a Sunday with my daughter and the service was perfect! They even accommodated our 2-flavor 1/2 and 1/2 pizza request. The toppings were generous in a thick layer of hot melted cheese. Unfortunately, I can't give the taste the same good review. The bottom of the pizza was burned and the bitter burned taste affected our whole experience. I understand the brick oven makes for a crunchier texture and that you will naturally find a few black spots at the bottom of the dough. I also understand running a restaurant must be a complex operation and the kitchen crew might be completely new. However, with such a visible location in town, there was lot of expectation on Friendly's replacement. Simply put, pizza from a pizza place just shouldn't be burned. read more

Today was our first time at Max and Leo's and we will definitely be coming back! First, the atmosphere is great and they have covered outdoor seating. Inside was really cute too. The service was quick and you can tell that they really care. The owner/manager was serving/cleaning tables and would check in to make sure we were all set. The pizza was really great too! I had a meatball sandwich and my wife had a grilled cheese and tomato. My meatball sandwich was tasty however the $10 sandwich had just a few pieces of meatball sliced incredibly thin between two pieces of bread with some cheese. There were potato chips on the side. I felt a bit cheated - the sandwich should have at least as much meatball as bread but didn't. The grilled cheese was tasty but nothing special. The waitress Crystal was attentive and pleasant. We (a party of 4) came here on a Saturday night for dinner. They have a decent seating area so we didn't have to wait and were immediately seated as soon as we arrived. There was a large group with lots of kids in the restaurant and they had occupied about three big tables. The group was so loud the entire time we were there that we couldn't even talk amongst ourselves without screaming at the top of our voice. In fact when the group left, just when we were about to finish our meal, we realized the restaurant had some good music on. The staff made no effort to let them know that they need to speak a bit softly considering there are other people in the restaurant. For appetizers we started off with the charred honey hot habanero wings. The wings were really good and juicy from the inside. It even had a nice habanero kick and would definitely order it again. For the pizza, we ordered the cheese pizza and requested them to add fresh garlic to it. We also ordered another pizza with pesto, olives, hot cherry peppers, caramelized onions and bbq drizzle. Lets start cheese pizza with "fresh garlic". It almost seemed like the chef was pissed that we asked for garlic and he put all the garlic on just one slice of the pizza! The tomatoes sauce was sour and the cheese did not seem fresh too! The crust was heavy and not light airy as you would expect it to be. The second pizza which was a build your own pizza was ok but not worth the price. A 15" pizza with the options that we had selected costed us $25!!!!! I can get much better pizza at almost half the price than this. Over all it was a really bad experience with exception of chicken wings and would not visit this location again. We would try their Newton location next time as it has been recommended by Eater Boston but we are definitely not coming here again. read more

Chelmsford has SO many pizza places but thus place is a welcome addition. They occupy a building that used to house a Friendly's restaurant. I used to love Friendly's as a kid but these coal fired pizzas are a huge step up the culinary ladder. My wife and I haven't dined at this location since it was a Friendly's, so it was nice to see it had been transformed into a proper restaurant and yet another addition to the Chelmsford dining scene. Max and Leo's has an inviting outdoor dining area, and while it is adjacent to a busy road, this reality was greatly lessened thanks to some effective landscaping and numerous hanging plants. Above you is a sturdy looking canopy, and the overall effect is very pleasant. The hightop tables, moreover, make this a terrific place to enjoy a meal, rain or shine. We enjoyed a delicious caesar salad (not overwhelmed by croutons, thank you) and a thin crust pizza that featured cheese, mushrooms, tomatoes, and basil. It was crispy, light, and very tasty. The restaurant also has a solid selection of draught beer, one of which is Guinness. Service appears to be another strength at Max and Leo's. We found the service to be friendly and efficient. Max and Leo's is s most welcome addition to the area dining scene, and we look forward to a return visit. read more

Ordered here for the first time tonight. I did mac'n'cheese and arugula salad takeout. I had to call a few times, and was placed on hold for five min before someone hung up on me, but once I was connected, a pleasant person told me my order would be ready in 15 min. I showed up a little later - 25 min- and it was ready and waiting. Upon opening at home, the Mac was hot and the salad chilled- perfect! The mac'n'cheese is a bit diminutive- one small portion- given the price, but the salad will be dined on for at least one more meal. Everything was fresh, bright-tasting, and obviously well prepared by knowledgeable kitchen staff and chefs. Will definitely be back, and cannot wait to try the outdoor area and pizza! read more

went Max and Leo's today and were met with three "sorties": 1) dont make bloody Mary's there despite having a 100' long bar 2) asked for a simple side salad but could not have that either. they would only offer full dinner salads that start at $14 per salad 3) and lastly and probably the most difficult to swallow (pun intended) could not order any pizza for another hour because every day at this time they are cleaning their ovens. wow! what ever happened to pleasing the customer. read more

Had a large Mikey pizza which was good little crispier than I like but that's the risk with the coal fired pizza. Atmosphere is rough here because it's so small and compact inside. This place is wonderful! We discovered it during COVID when the staff went way above and beyond to make us comfortable when we were not yet ready to eat inside. They do have a great patio and, now, we've discovered that the inside is nice as well. Good menu, interesting pizza combinations and good pasta. For something lighter, try their specialty tacos. The manager Amy is wonderful and so accommodating. I had ordered some pizzas to go for the family and they were overdone with an overwhelming burnt taste. I called and spoke to Amy and she was so apologetic and understanding. She agreed to refund the monies spent but I opted to just get a redo of the pizzas. They were incredible! Cooked to perfection! It's rare that you find someone who doesn't want to battle it out with you when a mistake was made. We all work hard for our money and it matters what you spend it on. I had high expectations for this place since I have had pizza from all around the USA and Italy. At this pizza place, the sauce was flavorless and there were very little ingredients added to the pizza like olives and mushrooms. Lastly, the pizza dough was average to below average. I wanted to give this place a better review, but I just can't given their product. Interestingly, I asked people who live in the area and they seem to like it. Just my opinion. read more

Customer service here leaves a lot to be desired. Food is good, drinks are good but when you try to explain to the manager you got the wrong dish she tells you that you are wrong. I ordered chicken piccata. No sauce, no capers, lots of pepper. All I wanted was a new dish made and she was very unprofessional. A restaurant is only as good as their front of the house. This place is awesome. I'd stopped a few times on my way home from work and grabbed a pie. I love their style. Thin crust, crispy, fresh ingredients. I finally got a chance to stop in and have lunch at the bar. They have a solid beer selection and it's a super cool atmosphere. Their wings are very good too.
