The window displays caught my attention the first time I walked by. Chanel handbags, Louboutin heels, Cartier rings - oh my! You know I had to stop in to take a peek. Inside you'll find luxury goods, artwork, and even electric guitars. The associates are all friendly and eager to assist. The security guard is also nice. Oh this is good! Very nice people! They bought a brooch from me that's been in my jewelry box for 19 years unworn. They paid me a very nice price! I had some other things with me but they were honest and said they don't have an audience for it but were so nice about it and helpful in their explanation. They have so much more than jewelry there as well and their prices are really good. I'd go here to shop before other places for jewelry, watches, furs (I don't do fur but hey, it's already dead so if you do, then go here), purses, and they even have some decor pieces. I came here looking for a nice gold and diamond ring for a gift. The staff and management were so professional. They found a beautiful ring that, sadly, was out of my budget. When the manager approached me and ask what my budget was. After showing me some nice items, I was shown one that I love right away. I recently got engaged and my ring was just a little too big, I have the unfortunate luck of getting sweaty hands often and my ring just seemed to slip right off. I have had my ring for exactly one month and with trying to get my engagement photos done and all of that good stuff I have not given sufficient time into getting my ring resized. Plus, I had a heavy heart about leaving my ring for up to 2 weeks with the jewelry store that my Fiance purchased my ring from. Well finally, I have to do something about it because towards the evening my ring would just go off to the side and the setting would end up on the inside of my hand. I work right next to Maxferd Jewelry and figured It'd be a lot more expensive than the $150-$200 estimate I had gotten from Kay Jewelry at the mall. I mean they are in Beverly Hills right off little Santa Monica so I mean come on I figured I'd be paying a ridiculous amount and honestly felt unsure about inquiring from a jewelry store that is known for pawning or selling off brand items/jewelry, etc. Today on the 25th of January I looked at their website and then jumped onto Yelp to read the reviews. Now my experience for this review comes from the service aspect but from past knowledge would not expect to get the same price or anything close to it when pawning stuff. If you can afford to spend a very high amount of money on luxury items because you have the money to do it then it really should not hurt you that much to get next to nothing for the items when you no longer want them. I am only saying this because of reviews based on pawning stuff. Everyone has to make money, if you're pawning something just know they're trying to make more money than they give you so. Anyway, I work in the Wells Fargo building adjacent to Maxferds and during my lunch decided to stop by after sending an email inquiry and being told that I should come in person better to get accurate pricing, etc. I read reviews based on their services and all were great so here we go. I walk in at 12:35 and am out by 12:40 with a receipt to pick up my ring Tuesday the 30th of January which is 4 days away from today WAY BETTER than up to 2 weeks I was getting from Kays and was told I'd pay $20 for the adjustment and that's it. As I was walking away I prayed that my ring would be in safe keeping and that when I went to feel my ring because it would usually be moving towards the inner part of my finger and I realized it was not there anymore. I was sad but told myself I had to do it and reassured myself it would get done correctly. At 2:42 pm (same day) as I am sitting on my desk I see a call come in on my cell phone from a 310 # so I google it really quick and see its them so I nervously answer my phone because I am not sure what to expect and am told that my ring is ready for pick up. SERIOUSLY! I ran to the store, tried on my ring and it fit perfectly fine, just a little bit of space in the case that my finger grows a bit, lol. I couldn't be happier, I really couldn't. Thank you so much to the jeweler that did my adjustment, he's only there Tuesday and Thursdays and he doesn't quite talk too much just enough to get the jist of what you're saying and get the job done. I stopped in on my way to other related businesses in Beverly Hills. I am a certified gemologist and have over 30 years experience in all facets of retail, wholesale, design, and manufacture of jewelry. I also have a Bachelor of Science in Geology so I am familiar with mining and refining. I say this not to brag but as background information for what I'm about to tell you. I noticed that their pricing was inconsistent among seemingly comparable pieces. I commented on it to the skinny guy about 30 years old with blue eyes, dark hair, and about 5'8" tall. He was working with a young Asian woman who appeared to be a new employee. I gave an example, pointing out a peridot ring that appeared to be over-priced compared to others. He said there was over 1/2 oz of 18k gold in the ring so that right there justified its price. Colored gems and diamonds are set with the under-gallery open so light can pass and to provide access to clean the stone, so all the gold weight in the ring had to be in the shank and shoulders. It did not have sufficient bulk to weigh that much. I said I doubted that claim, as an ounce is a little over 28 grams, and estimated it at about 11 grams. It is rare for me to be off by more than a gram, even on visual inspection. But who knows, this could have been one of those rare times I was way off. He said that I don't know what I'm doing and that I shouldn't even be talking since I hadn't weighed it blah blah. So I answered with a smile, "OK then, let's weigh it!". From there, if he were a decent salesman, he might have turned the challenge into a selling opportunity. Instead, he said, "Excuse me...", and literally turned his back and directed his attention to his trainee. I commented to my husband, "Guess he's done with us (lol)!" Well that pissed him off and he reeled around to once again reiterate how full of shit I must be. But I ask you this: If he was telling the truth, why didn't he weigh that bad-boy for me? Why didn't he ask me why, out of all the pieces in the store, I noticed that particular one? (Answer: Peridot is one of my favorite colored gems, and it is my birth stone.) So, sonny-boy if you are reading this, I'll give you a little lesson in salesmanship and maybe some common manners. I'm 30 years your senior and have forgotten more than you have ever learned about jewelry and selling it. First, you must be respectful to potential customers at all times. I'm not saying the customer is always right, but they are always the ones who buy from you and being insulting will never work. The mask you wear to hide your bullying ways slipped the instant you were challenged. You also must get to know your customers, and what piques their interest in various merchandise. You probably could have sold me that ring, as well as the men's ring with the floating high-cab opal... and perhaps that gold pocket watch with the rose-gold ornamentation. Lovely pieces. Next, the art of bullshitting. Don't BS about something that's easy to verify by a layman. Like weight. If YOU knew what you were doing and if you weren't an arrogant blow-hard, you'd have said, "Sure, let's go weigh it and if you're right, we'll negotiate the price!". Or how about this if you want to bullshit: "Well, it's nearly impossible to see from a distance, but this peridot is very special. It has the rare and coveted lily-pad inclusion, which increases its rarity and value by 10 times!" I actually would have accepted such a story and moved on... Or at least commended you on one of the best bullshit lines I ever heard. Or, how about this: "I know it doesn't look like half an ounce but it's die-struck so the mounting is much heavier and durable than it appears. That's a mark of fine18k gold." But no. No creativity. No respect. Hey, I know! How about honesty? Try this: "Different people here make different deals on different days and we price our resale items based on what we paid. It's a custom piece so we paid more than we would for scrap. What's your offer? Let's make a deal!". But no. No creativity, no manners, and no sale. I am currently liquidating an estate with high end jewelry, rugs, art and musical instruments, which places me in that area working with more professional resellers. Thought maybe these guys could help move some things. No. No class. read more

Wasted my time for 3 hours, Made a deal with me on purchasing 2 watches , took my license and all my information and than later tells me the boss needs to approve it and apologizes. Than I call next day and the girl who was a complete idiot on the phone tells me there is no boss there and that when I asked who does the approvals told me she couldn't give me the name. FALSE ADVERTISEMENT!!! I saw a necklace in the $300 and under case 3 weeks ago - I go in to buy it - the lady said it was an additional 30% off - the price was going to be $191 - perfect right? NO - it rang up for over $500 when she scanned it - her partner said that he would have to call their boss (in Israel) to see if it was OK to sell for the price advertised -after waiting for 10 or 15 minutes, he was not able to reach their boss so I left - I will never go there again and WILL NOT RECOMMEND this store to any of my colleague's or high profile clients here in Beverly Hills! read more

The poor stock in the shop should have made me turn around and leave, but I'd been referred to this place, so I thought I'd give them the benefit of the doubt. I brought a piece of diamond jewelry that had a GIA grading of D color, IF, just over a carat solitaire, and an appraisal of $14,000. They offered me a $1000 loan and "to help me out," offered to buy for $4000 (I'd previously been given a loan at another, more upscale pawn shop for nearly $5000). Very sleazy behavior and they either were out to take advantage of the situation (maybe I was desperate, they perhaps thought?), or they didn't know what they were looking at. For at least for 17 or more years I've been a costumer at THE COLLATERAL LENDER, always, very helpful people, great costumer service. I guess a few years back they changed ownership or management and they've became MAXFERD JEWELERY AND LOAN About a week or so I went in to pay the interests on my loans, I paid some that were coming due ( and although they were not due yet, they charged me $5 for ticket fee + $3 notice chg + $2 lost chg. whatever all that means, twice), and I wanted to also pay what was going to be due, in the next weeks, it was about $117, but I only had $100 on me. Because I was a couple of dollars short they told me that instead of making a partial payment to come in the next couple of weeks and pay the total interest amount. I came back yesterday, and was found with added charges, for coming after they had sent a notice, although they told me to come back when the amount was due. Now the amount due was $128. The clerk who was taking care of me went to ask the manager about it, the manager, said I had to wait. Tired of waiting I agreed to pay the few extra dollars and she came back with another fee, now it was $133. I said I wasn't going to pay for this. I was told about a week ago a completely different amount. She went back to the manager and he said again I had to wait. He was standing at least 10 yards away from me, calling the clerk, and telling her things in private looking at me and laughing out loud. I asked him to approach me. He ignored me, I asked for a supervisor, nothing, I asked for the owner, no one would answered me. I asked him repeatedly why he was being so rude to me, after all he was the manager of the place and that was definitely not helpful or conducive to anything. He continued to ignore me. Until he came straight to me, very close and with his hand raised as if he was about to hit me, and in my face he yelled : Shut your face! and threaten me he was not going to renew my contract. Then went back to ignoring me. I told him I was going to call the police, he told one of his clerks to call the police. He continued ignoring me, and no one would help me with anything, I asked repeatedly what were we waiting for, I needed to leave, so I wanted to pay and be done with it already. He said we were waiting for the police and he again ignore me and had his employees ignore me as well. I then called the police myself. when they came I went outside of the store to speak with the policeman and noticed one of the employees, went out a second later, stood not too far from us, listening in and with hes cell phone pointing at us, as if she was recording me/us/the dialog. Stood there the whole time until I left. One of the policemen went inside. When he came out he told me that if I wanted to part ways with them I had to pay a certain amount by next week and he told me they said I was being disruptive. I was beside myself. I do not know why this manager acts with such complete impunity, and I am dumfounded that his employees would obey his words and oblige to this behavior. When I came back to pay, the manager wasn't there. These people, not only over charge, but they are rude. The manager is the one person who should be helping the costumer when there is a dispute or a misunderstanding, instead one feels trapped, taken advantage of, abused with no way out, it's his (very rude) way or the highway. read more

Be careful if you go here! Our experience is that the company claims it sends you a "foreclosure" notice but did not. Calling and speaking with the manager was a terrible experience. He started to yell and actually scream at us because we 'interrupted" his sentence. He refused to assist us. Claimed we did not make a payment but even worse, did not send a notice which is in clear violation of the contract. They cannot prove that they sent a notice, either. We were given the number of a manager (they refused to give the "manager's last name). We have left several messages. They do not call back. We are 2 hours away from this store. Basically, they confiscated over $20,000 worth of merchandise without notice and refuse to give it back. We will have no choice except to seek any and all legal remedies available to us. I looked up this place and went there at 5:30 and the girl in the front seemed to be avoiding me. At first I didn't quite understand why she wouldn't approach me to ask me if I need any help, as I stood there waiting for a few minutes she finally looked at me and said "yes". I then said I wanted to get a loan on my jewelry and she said well we are closing now, I looked at the sign which said 5:45 and mentioned that and she went and brought a man over. He then said ma'am we are closing now and it will take a very long to test all this gold and jewelry. Coming from a background with jewelry I do understand the work it requires, although an acid test takes about five to ten minutes. I understand it was close to closing time but when a customer walks in 15 min prior to closing you should at least try to accommodate them to the best you can I even told him there is still ten minutes left but they didn't want to help me in any way. It was very upsetting and also distasteful. If this is the oldest pawn shop in America as their sign claims then they have a lot to live up to, one being customer service. The girl was very rude, and the man very unhelpful I don't recommend this place to anyone. read more
