A choice of shrimp pasta with creamy spinach sauce or tomato baked porkchop over fried rice. $5 to upgrade with soup and cake of the day for lunch. $12 to upgrade with appetizer (salad), soup and choice of cake for dinner. That spread of curry sauce on the salad went exceptionally went with balsamic vinegar greens unexpectedly. Unique and rare combination of flavour in your mouth. Bravo to the chef's creativity! $33 Duck confit in red wine reduction sauce over pasta (special request not on menu). Duck confit was juicy and the red wine sauce was flavourful. Pasta was al dente and enjoyable. $49 Lobster & seafood pasta with lobster sauce with spaghettini. The lobster sauce was absolutely delicious. The sauce was slightly tangy with tomato flavour and you can taste the lobster in the sauce likely made with the shell. I could drink the sauce as soup lol. Seafood was fresh and I would order this again as a treat since it's a bit on the pricier side. Loved their cakes always and they made it pretty for pictures. So having lived in Richmond Hill my whole life, this resto is definitely a 3 star spot. My family used to order mango dream cakes from this bakery every so often because they were quite good but expensive (it has been awhile though). My fam and I came recently because the resto was celebrating its 50th anniversary with a daily special menu. The braised beef short rib w/ fettucine was ACTUALLY pretty good! The beef was tear-apart, fork tender and the sauce was delicious. They also gave a pretty decent portion of meat. I DO wish they mixed the sauce with the noodles though. The veggies were also cooked on point which surprised me as well. For dessert we opted for their famous almond meringue and some orange chocolate truffle cake. Strictly speaking from a 50th anniversary deal perspective I would award 4 stars out of 5, as the meal was actually good value because the portions were large and the meal included dessert for each person as well. At first glance, the menu prices are considerably higher than at other restaurants. However, after taking into account that the dishes come with soup of the day, coffee or tea, and a slice of cake, it's not so bad. The menu is on a single page, and that's fine with me since it's so much harder to decide what to order when there are too many options. There were three servers when we went for a weekend lunch. One of the servers seemed to be in a perpetual rush, and we were barely given half a second to make decisions. The other two servers weren't as rushed and came by often to top up our water, clear dishes, etc. Sometimes there is a bit of a wait for service since there's two sides to the restaurant and the front doubles as a bakery, with customers coming in to order or pickup cakes. In terms of ambiance, the restaurant puts up holiday decorations; there's a large projector screen for CP24; but the seating towards the centre of the restaurant is dim. My bolognese was on the salty side, but otherwise, it was a decent portion. My dining companion enjoyed the duck-leg pasta. When it came time for dessert, we weren't given a choice of what flavour we got. Luckily, we got flavours that we iked. The mango meringue was delicious. It was dimly lit but we sat near the windows so there was still enough sunlight. Service - 3.5/5. They were attentive in the beginning but it was hit and miss when they had new customers coming in. The girl was more attentive than the boy Food - 3.75/5. The food took a bit to come out which was fine. Ours came out slightly earlier than another couple behind us so they weren't too happy. Overall, the food was decent. The salad was nice. There was a little bit of heat to the ceab cakes. The soups were flavourful. Soup of the day was cream of broccoli and borscht soup. The bread was a little bit on the harder side and not hot enough to melt the cold butter. All the meat except for lamb chops were overcooked. We ordered medium rare for the beef and it came out medium well to borderline well done. The dessert is great. We got the chestnut cake and chocolate orange cake. There's chestnut pieces in the cream layers. The chocolate orange cake was decadent. I suspect a bit of dark chocolate used as well as there was a degree of bitterness to it. Overall: 3.75/5. I was here with family on a Saturday night. It was super busy, so make sure to check tables/make reservations beforehand. We personally got lucky and didn't have to wait long to be seated. We only tried the dessert menu. The dark chocolate mousse was pretty good -- all very standard, and one slice came to about $6. The staff is also attentive and prompt, and the restaurant is overall super family friendly. It mainly serves an Asian demographic, which makes sense since it's owned by a Hong Kong-born pastry chef, but all their desserts and food are European. Baked pork chop with fried rice was the best of the 3 with 2 slices of overcooked pork chop and mixed veg. The hazelnut mocha cake was pretty good and not too sweet but I did find it dry and a tinge of sourness Overall would be a rating of 2 had it not been that they were snacking where drinks and food was being prepared and cash was being handled. Haven't been here in a long time since my childhood which I remember being good so we decided to order their family take out platter a couple of times during the pandemic and it did not disappoint. The Family Take Out Platter has Shrimps Cocktails, 4 Soup of the Day, Garlic Bread, grilled vegetables butter corn on the cob, potato Croquettes, 4 mains that you can choose from a long list of items. It also includes any 6" Maxim cake of your choose. All for $135! It's honestly a crazy deal. In the pictures Mains we chosen for 2 platters in the pictures (2 separate times) - 8oz strip loin - good seasoning and nice medium rare - pickle pork hock - smoky, tender, moist and delicious - seafood paella - average paella, rice a tad over cooked - 4 chicken skewers - very dry and do not recommend - smoked chicken - also dry but had nice smoke flavor - Alfredo seafood pasta - creamy, fresh, rich and al-dente pasta Things that came with our platters - shrimp cocktail salad with cocktail sauce and salad vinaigrette - shrimp was fresh and plump and the vinaigrette was a great compliment to the mixed greens - seafood cream soup - fresh seafood and rich creamy flavorful soup - garlic bread - normal garlic bread - grilled vegetables - carrots were over cooked and the rest was good - corn on the cob - I think the corn was old and over cooked so it was not good - potato croquettes - good texture and flavor - gravy - this gravy was delicious and goes well on all the components of the platter - 6' strawberry meringue cake - crunchy, moist, huge and filled with strawberries and cream. The only thing I get here, and I suggest you get as well, is the Almond Meringue Cake. It's a light, crunchy meringue base and topping, filled with fresh whipped cream and paired with a fruit of your choice. I don't usually like sweets, or cake, but this one's to die for! The light, crunchy exterior paired with the deep rich crunch of the almonds, all lightened with a soft pillowy whipped cream and fruits. On this occasion, it was a slight disappointment since they mixed up my order and gave me strawberries instead of mangoes. The strawberries weren't very ripe and had a negative effect on the overall enjoyment of the cake. AAA 10oz Strip Lion Steak with Baked Meat Sauce Au Gratin $33 Presentation was nice, it came on a wooden plank. And the plating was nice. The steak was cooked to my preference of medium-rare. There was also a few string beans and carrots, gravy and the meat sauce spaghetti au gratin. Taste was good but I found the steak to had a little refrigeration taste to it or it might be the herbs. But regardless it wasn't bad. Pan Seared Chicken Supreme in Mixed Mushroom Marsala Sauce $23 Chicken was quite tender and moist. And tasted pretty good as well. We both has coffee, and to select the cake slices I had to go to the cake display. I chose Black Forest for my husband and Strawberry Almond Meringue for myself! Maxim is a fusion restaurant where Western foods is served with a Chinese twist. Seating was spacious and there was no line when I went on Saturday night with my family. The parking lot isn't bad as well, although several other restaurants share the plaza. Walking in you can see this huge display of cakes, which is honestly the most exciting part of the meal. Ordering was simple as the menu was literally 10 items (or less). This was a minus for me as I feel like the options weren't diverse enough. We were served by 3 different waiters which made it confusing but understandable as we were the only table in the right-sided area, while everybody else was seated in the main (left) side. Food came out pretty quick. The bread was heated before it was served which was appreciated. Nobody likes cold bread. The soup appetizer was okay. I didn't really like the clam chowder as it was the easy, cheap kind to make. The tomato soup was yummy and had the kick of heat I wanted. I got the cod and scallop with rice. The seafood itself was good but the rice was cold and had some hard pieces. It felt like it was left over night and then served back to me :( Everybody else enjoyed their meal pretty well. My family also ordered the: - Lamb: this was a little too gamey, but the proportions were huge. - Mixed grill: a lot, a lot of food. To me they actually all tasted the same as they drenched it in the gravy but still not bad. - Korean styled beef: lots of meat but too little rice. The quality of the beef was good but I wished they filled the plate up instead of trying to make it look like the tiny French cuisine plates. We got our drinks at the end which was a little strange for me. Honey-lemon-iced tea is always a fave - just don't poke too hard at the lemon so everything turns bitter. My mom loves their milk tea (lai cha). The greatest part was the dessert: Their meringue is famous and we order it every time it's my mom's birthday. The "shell" is crispy but so flavorful with this nutty flavor. It is FILLED with cream and fruits (mangoes or strawberries). I wish they kept their quality with how much fruit they put in. It's diminished quite a lot over the years. Final Thoughts: - First, yes I will definitely be back but maybe for only special occasions when I'm craving the cake. - Second, they are so unorganized. My mom ordered a cake to go to go for my sister's birthday (for after the meal). When I was up looking at the display a little later the servers were like: oh what happened to the cake? Maxim has been around for years. I remeber coming here as a kid and really really loved their food, especially looking forward to the desert at the end. Fast forward years when we've kind of moved away from Asian style western food fine dining, I recently returned again and found I still enjoyed their food and desserts a lot. Now, Maxim has been around for years and the decor hasn't changed. Don't expect fancy decor even if it's labeled as fine dining. It isn't a vintage kind of dated, just dated overall. It doesn't help that they often had outdated decorations from past events (ie. Christmas decor still around for Valentine's day, Valentine's day hanging hearts still around during summer). If you compare their menu to regular Asian style Cafe, it will be more expensive, but of course you have relatively more comfortable seating here and without the traditional rushed service in a HK style Cafe. The menu is still cheap compared to an actual fine dining restaurant. Per the HK style, their meals come default as a 3 course - appetizer, main course, dessert, and coffee or tea. My parents much enjoy this prix fixe menu style to ordering separately, they also enjoy it with Asian style milk tea at the end. The prix fixed menu is pretty decent with a variety of steak, lamb, duck, pasta, etc. catering to every taste. Ingredients may not be super fancy, but much better than your scrambled steak meal at another HK style Cafe. As others have mentioned, Maxim has great desserts. So I'm not sure what to think about that other than,"strange". The main course was not bad, but saying "with king oyster mushroom"?... it was like a chopped up sliver of it. The side salad had a nice balsamic dressing, and the veggie spring rolls were like the Costco ones. Meal two: pork chop with veggies and mashed (came with salad or clam chowder, dessert, and a drink). The clam chowder soup was tasteless (not salty, not chowder-y), and barely any clams. Canned soup is much better than that. The pork chop was surprisingly good, like a piece of ham, but the sides were very sad looking.
