My wife and I had not been there for a few years and were a bit concerned about some of the reviews on this site, but the dishes we had were well prepared, well presented , and delicious. I haven't been to Maxime's in 8 years while living out of town. Went back and was delighted to find nothing had changed. The decor is elegant and very classical, and one can feel as comfortable arriving in jeans and leisure wear as a full suit or dinner dress. The prime rib is by far the best in the city. It's like a retirement home cafeteria with incredibly high prices. No one in the restaurant was under 60. Food was very average.

This is my first post on this site. I felt compelled to get this message out due to my family's recent Christmas Eve outing. My wife and I ate steak and lobster tail. I requested the steak be cooked medium rare, unfortunately the steak was overcooked to the point of being brown throughout, the lobster tails didn't fare much better, dry and overcooked. Perhaps the chef had the night off. I asked for A1 or some other steak sauce and they offered HP. Our friendly waiter forgot to bring it, I am aware the restaurant has a Thur-Sun Prime Rib special which when I ate it ten years ago, seemed really good at that time. Six of us and 3 single drinks came to 337.00. I would not return to this restaurant for the above mentioned reasons. read more

Beware of Rude Servers and Small Serving!!! Went here with a big group of family of friends to celebrate our post holiday party. When we were doing the reservation and having the occular visit, the staff was nice and even gave us a tour. We informed them that we'll kinda have a little program with games and all that stuff so they booked us to the green room as we are roughly 20-30pax. So the day of our party came. This rude server greeted two of my friends with arrogance saying that we were late as it was already 11:15am and we told them that we'll arrive 11ish. She could've said it in a better way but unfortunately she didn't. We let that passed. Then we asked if we can move the table a little so we have a little space for some games. And you know what she said?? "No! You can't move the tables because how are the staff going to serve your food?? Throw them out??!" Like seriously? Is that a polite way to answer a customer back?? She's already getting into our nerves but still we let that passed as we were worried that she'll do disgusting stuff to our food. Then, we just decided to just eat lunch and leave right after. Continue our games and program to our friend's house as we don't want to spoil our day by some incompetent, racist, arrogant server. Food came. Since the price is a bit expensive, I expected a lot from the taste and serving size. But was disappointed. Small portion. Nothing special. You can compare the quality to a fastfood or some other low-priced restaurant. So if you're planning to go here for a special occassion or just a simple lunch/dinner, beware! Disappointing. Have always had a special place in my heart for Maxime's, Because I went there for my graduation dinner celebration and other special occasions, but it's not a good place to go if it's your birthday. We brought our cake and was told There would be a per person charge for serving it and that they do not provide any thing special for the person on their birthday. They should realize that this is Winnipeg and they would have more customers if they treated people special on their birthdays like most places do, instead of up charging them for it. Outstanding! I needed a place to host a 75th birthday party. I live in Las Vegas, NV, so this meant doing the deal mostly by telephone. The staff there was very responsive, and I felt like everything was ready long before I flew in. With 20 guests, ranging from 18 to 85 years old, they worked with me to print a limited menu to suit everyone. The day of the party the guests were seated and enjoying beverages when I arrived with the guest of honor. Table settings were crisp, the room was tidy and everyone was impressed. Service was top notch. Nobody had to ask for a coffee refill, and I never saw an empty water glass. Plates were cleared quickly and without intrusion. The waitstaff was as good as it gets. The food was great. Everyone was happy with the selections, and the portions were large enough that many took food home. The soup was fresh & tasty. The salads were crisp, and well prepared. All of the plates had nice presentation. We were there for 3 plus hours. Never had any pressure to wrap things up. When we did depart, the staff double checked the area for personal belongings, and helped us to the car with the gifts. A class act all the way around. When I paid the bill I was pleasantly surprised too! We will dine here again the next time we are in Winnipeg. read more

You know a business treats there staff well when they stay there for years as some of the servers have been with Maxime's for a very long time. The sisters that operate the restaurant are always friendly and willing to accommodate your needs. When I want a nice meal in a comfortable setting this is the place I go to. read more

Service was pretty good. My husband and I have been twice now. Waiter was prompt and courteous both times. Our meals were very good both times. My husband is very picky about how is steak is cooked and they got it right both times so they are consistent. Decent portion sizes. Not huge but just enough. I have never commented on one of these sites before but felt that I should this time. I went to this restaurant last night (I think it was my fifth time here) with my cousin and sister. When we got there we thought that we would sit in the lounge as it seemed busy, being a Saturday evening. We entered the door and then went to enter the lounge door but as we opened it a women grabbed the door and demanded to know if we had a reservation! Of course it would have been better if we had one but we just went there on the off chance that they would have room! She then said ( I felt) rather rudely that we had to go to the front desk and check in. This we did and were seated in the lounge in about ten minutes. I understand they were busy but that attitude left a bad taste in my mouth. We were considering leaving when we got our table. Additionally, I wanted to comment on the fact that one has to go to the front desk to check in! A lounge should not have reservations (that is why it is a lounge)! Also, going to the front desk and then going back there when they are ready seems ridiculous! It is too hard to control what is going on in the lounge from the front desk! I was really upset by this time and was not enjoying myself. But then we got our server, who I had had before in the restaurant section. His name is Serge and he is a great server! This made our visit here a lot better and I enjoyed this time personally- from this point on. My food was good and I got a very good Irish coffee that was recommended by Serge. My cousin though, had the veal that he found tasted strange. I tried it also and so did my sister and we both found that it strange in the taste. We said nothing to Serge as we did not want to ruin the experience that we were having (which had not started out good but was a little better now). Serge had recoomended the soup , which was really good! Just for the experience we had with Serge, I would definitely go again (though I am not sure about my cousin). I have been too upset by our visit and comments from the manager at Maxime`s to respond until now. Now, you will get my story - I am the one who made the reservation for 20 people for brunch on Sunday, April 27th at 1130 hrs. (under Lapointe). I made the reservation 1 week prior to our visit. The person taking the reservation asked if it was a special occasion - I said not really just our usual brunch - but my brother was celebrating his 50th birthday. I did ask about cakes just out of curiosity and she quoted prices which I found a little pricey - I told her that was fine - we would just be having brunch. At that time I had no intention of bringing a cake and at no time did she tell me that if we were to do that there would be a $2. charge per person. I DEFINITELY would have remembered that. I`m not sure how someone would make a comment about having told me about the charge for a reservation taken a week earlier. I actually picked up a cake at Sobeys the day prior on a whim - I did think about calling the restaurant at one point to ask but got busy and forgot about it. I really didn`t think it would be an issue as I knew other restaurants allowed it. I now wish I had taken the few minutes to verify because it turned our beautiful family gathering into a nightmare in a matter of minutes. I brought paper plates and plastic cutlery out of courtesy to the restaurant - I felt we wouldn`t be using their dishes, less dishwashing, etc. The cake was on a bar stool - it was not in a bag - you could clearly see it. The waitress walked by it often. At one point, I brought it over to show my brother - the waitress saw us and said nothing. As stated previously, two orders were cold and went back. Honestly, my potatoes were also cold but I attributed it to our being a large group and difficult to get all the food out hot in a timely manner. I never complained about my meal and said it was good - just trying to be nice. It`s unfortunate that my niece, who has not been able to attend most of our brunches because of MS and wheelchair bound, was actually able to come that day and had to witness this. When the waitress came over to tell us about the cake - she was so angry - at first I thought she was kidding with us and we were all going to have a laugh - then I realized she was serious. I saw my brother`s face turn from joyous to embarrassed in the course of seconds. I was upset - I offered to have the whole amount - $40.00 put on my bill but my family wouldn`t allow it. They even charged $2 per person on those who didn`t even have a piece of cake. We knew about the automatic gratuity of 17% for a group over 13 which I had let everyone know in advance - this definitely worked to their advantage for this visit. Prior to that point, my sister-in-law had even mentioned about going to Maxime`s more often for our brunches. We usually meet every couple of months and pick different restaurants and we are usually 20-30 in our group, depending. My husband even tried to talk to the manager - he asked the waitress to get the manager for him. He literally waited a good 5 min. before she even came over - he had to ask a few times - I know they were hoping he would get tired of waiting and we would just go away. Once he finally talked to her - she kept telling him there was nothing she could do - it was policy. I`m sorry but I have never been in a restaurant where a manager could not change policy. Managers do this all the time - they gauge a situation and make a decision. I have been in restaurants where some charge automatic gratuity for large groups, some don`t and those that do usually charge 15 percent, not 17. I also know that similar restaurants in South St. Vital - Earls, Montanas, Original Joes, Bellamys and Moxies do not charge if you bring your own cake, in fact, they encourage it and ask you to let them take it to the kitchen and prep it for your party. They also do not add gratuity to large groups - they rely on customer satisfaction. With increasing competition from other establishments, I have only found that most restaurants want to do everything they can to make your visit enjoyable and get your repeat business. I felt humiliated and embarrassed. I can`t believe a restaurant would be so adamant about making $40.00 by upsetting 20 repeat customers. I can`t tell you how sorry I am I didn`t pick up the phone and call ahead about the cake or mention it as soon as I arrived with it. Unfortunately, I was naive. I just feel the whole situation could have been handled better. read more

I have been going to Maxime Restaurant since it opened (about 25 or so years) and it is a fabulous restaurant, beautiful decore and delicious food. It has been family run since day one and they are always updating the menu and adding new and interesting specials. I would recomend this to restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Recently went for a family celebration here. Eight people in total. Very disappointed. Food was mediocre and service was extremely slow.

We chose this restaurant to celebrate our parents' 50th wedding anniversary. Staff were quite friendly, but we were quite disappointed that they were unwilling to seat us all as one group. We asked if tables could be moved together into different configurations, but were told it was against policy. It was quite a disjointed way to celebrate such a big event. The food was not bad, but nothing spectacular. It took almost an hour from ordering to getting our starters and everything seemed to take a long time. The mandatory 17% gratuity was definitely more than I would have left. Based on our experience, we will never choose this place again. read more

Went to Maximes on a Monday night... 3rd date and wanted to impress. We started with a couple 9 oz. glasses of the house red - Jackson Triggs the old restaurant stand by. I was hoping to have a long lingering dinner... and after the server came by twice in 5 minutes to take our order... she put 2 and 2 together. Timing for everything from there on was perfect. We both ordered the same meals ( fluke ) starting with the French Onion soup. A little salty for my liking... but still a good effort even though far from the best I have had. For the main course we both had the featured Veal Oscar. Served with a starter field greens salad ( pass unless you like eating a bowl of weeds topped with a few red onion slices and chopped radish )... entree came with roasted potatoes and asparagus ( excellent ) and baby carrots. Veal was breaded which is fine by me... and covered in Bernais sauce topped with tiger prawns. My understanding was that it was supposed to come with prawns and crab meat. if so the crab meat was non existent. We lingered till 9pm over dinner then went next door to the lounge where the bartender looked like she was about to close up. We ordered 2 specialty coffees ( done properly ) and was promptly asked for payment. She really seemed pissed that I asked for change from my payment and after dropping it off at the table proceeded out the door. My understanding was that the restaurant was open till 10 PM. Dinner for two with wine came to $122.00 plus tip and the huffy bartender will never see hers. Gave this experience 4 stars. 5 stars for the server and 1 for the bartender. I have had far better food and drink for much less. If you go... bring your wallet especially if you are considering steak ( high 20's to mid 30's range ). Google the menu and unless you see a must have... you might want to consider other choices. Not dissing this restaurant.... just saying they are very pricey for dinner. read more

We have been going to Maxime for special occasion suppers (birthdays, anniversaries) ever since they opened. I love the Souvlaki and Greek Salad and I'm afraid I order it almost every time, but my family and friends enjoy other choices, of which there is a variety. I'm told they serve the best liver in the city. Friends and I celebrate other achievements with appetizers and red wine in the lounge in the afternoon, and it is a favourite destination for our luncheon group of retired former co-workers, when they put us in a separate room or in the separate lounge. Weekend evenings you better make a reservation because it tends to be busy. Some of the "wait staff" have been with them for years, and the owner is often there to oversee and greet costumers. read more

The food came out cold, the service was terrible and when we spoke to management, nothing was rectified. We had brought our own cake, which was on the table. At the end of the meal, we were charged 2$ a head for a dessert fee, because we had brought our own cake. We were never notified about this fee beforehand, even though the cake was clearly sitting there. When we spoke to management, they were completely incompetent. The food was stodgy and terrible, carelessly thrown together as if flavor wasn't even a consideration. Some of the food was oversalted to the point of insanity. Was there for Mother's Day and was totally disappointed. They ran out of pea soup, so had the only remaining choice, which was potato leek which was watery, very little taste, only a hint of potato and was not served with crackers, which would had added a little body to the watery soup. I really wanted a good mashed potato, but it seemed more like tasteless potato flakes with too much water added which was barely edible using the fork. The bread however was fresh and the fresh vegetables were nicely tender-crisp. The main entree was mediocre. Our main entrees took a long time to come. We were sitting there bored and when a member of our party of only 3 people talked to the manager, was given a lot of excuses. At the end of the meal, the manager sent the server to apologize and removed the cost of our appetizer from the bill.There were no smiles from the staff and the environment made you feel more like a burden as opposed to a valued customer. They have amazing appetizers, like the calamari, goat cheese spinach dip with pita chips, and brushetta that are incredible.....the dinner size salads and pastas are HUGE...I couldn't believe I could be so full off one salad...and you definitely get your money's worth. Sometimes I don't even know what to order because their menu offers EVERYTHING! Other restaurants in the area charge too much and the food and service is not as great, but at maxime's you don't have to worry about that at all! My family and I regularly dine at Maximes mostly for a late lunch or dinner with my mother in law although the meals are not extrodinary my mother in law likes going - since it was Mother's Day my family and I made reservations for brunch. I was so disappointed that my fried potatoes were cold and my eggs benedict luke warm - I sent my plate back and was returned with warm potatoes I even had my husband try them to be sure. Not wanting to ruin the meal for the rest of my family I ate my warm eggs benedict and left the potatoes. In the end my husband did let the waiter know about my disappointing meal and he returned with a gift certificate for a free desert on our next visit which I quickly returned stating there would be no next visit. The restaurant was very busy so my meal should have been hot especially because the eggs benedict was on of their featured specials. When I went to pay I mentioned my disappointment, the front desk person said she witnessed the potatoes being placed on the plate and the waiter immediately bringing them to me I stated then there is something wrong with how the cook is preparing them stating my husband tried them also, I asked for my meal to be compensated for and she said only because it was Mother's Day would she give me my meal for free. My family and I will never go to Maximes mostly due to the way I was treated regarding the attitude about compensating me for my meal. read more

First time experience at Maxime's. Heard rave reviews, Went for a dinner for two on a weekday night. Place was so noisy we could barely have a conversation with each other. Definitely a place for the over 70 crowd. Ordered steak and lobster. Lobster was over-cooked and the "roasted lemon" and the lobster shell were burnt. Left a brunt smell in your nose that would not go away and made the rest of the food tasteless. Returned the meal and the second lobster was so salty, we could not eat it. Only went because we were gifted with a gift certificate. Waitress was very helpful but the kitchen staff left a lot to be desired. Commented to the manager and she apologized for the state of our meal but did not offer any compensation other than next time we should try the lounge as it is quieter. Obviously sitting in the lounge would not improve on the food. Will not repeat. One disappointment was enough. read more
