Amazing. Incredible. You might think Maxons is a little out of the way, and it is. But the big city has got nothing on this place when it comes to unique flavor! It's hard to describe the way they've carved out an entirely new BBQ flavor. I had the BBQ tacos with pulled pork, which was dynamic. The parfait is certainly a unique way to deliver the whole experience in a single convenient dish. Beans in the bottom, pulled pork, with coleslaw on top. Certainly the different types of slaw influenced the overall flavor but I think it was also the way the cabbage in the slaw was rough cut instead of shredded. Siracha and Dijon were in the driver's seat with one of the slaws I tried. The staff was super friendly. Although the restaurant is a humble place it was jammed when we were there. If I lived in the area I'd probably show up once a week too! Maxons clearly captured the rural area's attention and some folks from town were there too. What a great experience. I don't even think this place is open any longer. The phone is out of service. I ordered online for barbecue for the Fourth of July celebration and I got an email back on the Internet that they had received it along with my payment and I drive by there tonight the doors are locked. Coolers are empty inside. Such a shame it was a good place for barbecue. read more

FYI for first timers: you order at the window. Seating is available inside and outside. We both had the brisket Mac and cheese. It was delicious and a generous portion. Staff was friendly. Will be back. read more

Was able to make it out to Maxons Blue Country for a weekend lunch. Although it is a little bit outside of Mount Pleasant, it was well worth it to get some great barbecue. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich ($8.95) as well as a pulled pork street taco ($2.95/taco). The meat was very tender and flavorful while the staff was helpful. Next visit, I hope to try the Brisket Mac and Cheese. read more

Great food; not much restaurant feel. This place has the best BBQ in mid-Michigan. Pulled pork, ribs, and brisket were tender, juicy and flavorful. Green beans with pork belly flavoring were to die for. Pulled pork nachos were loaded and delicious. Entrees are reasonably priced at about $12 for huge portions of homemade food. You can tell however they evolved from a food truck - it's all centered on the great food, not the sit-down restaurant experience. Once you order at the counter, they'll bring your food in styrofoam containers. There's no beers and wine, only self-serve pop or tea. Friendly and helpful staff, and you should trust their recommendations. Just not a full-service type of place. Well worth the drive for great barbecue. read more

Incredible brisket and pulled pork. Cornbread and pit beans were great. You can eat there or do take out. Everything packed to-go was super well-done and we had all we needed for a full meal on the go. Can't wait to come back again. Take sauces to go too! If you are looking for some GREAT BBQ, this is where you want to be. There are a lot of BBQ places that you can eat at, but they are nothing compared to the food that is prepared at this restaurant. The only good BBQ around Mt. Pleasant. The owner was very friendly and I chatted him up while I ate. For now, it's primarily geared towards take out, but the he plans on building out the dining room as well as some outdoor seating for summertime. He also said he plans on partitioning off the very end of the dining room to create a sausage making area (currently he's just smoking store bought Kielbasa style sausages). Once the building is ready, he'll expand the hours to more than just the weekend. On to the food! Overall, it was all pretty danged good. The brisket was perfect with a simple Texas style rub (salt, pepper, and maybe some garlic). Moist, tender, and with a beautiful, prominent smoke ring. Pulled pork was equally good, and the sausage was good for having started as store bought, although I do prefer the coarser grind of homemade (more like the texture of Bratwurst or Italian Sausage). The mac-n-cheese was excellent; super cheesy and flavorful. The cornbread seemed like it was right out of the oven, which made me happy because I love cornbread and at most places you often get a dried out piece. I only wish they had butter to slather on it (mmmmmm... hot buttered cornbread), but oh well. The only thing I didn't care for was the burnt ends (which he gave me on accident, but said just keep them). They were very, very fatty and not so great, but hey, everything else was great so whatevs. I'll definitely hit it up again when I'm feeling too lazy to fire up my smoker. read more

If you want real traditional barbecue, Maxon's Blue Country Barbecue is your place. All the meat is smoked low and kissed with smoke. It's truly awesome to have such a great authentic barbecue place in Mt. Pleasant. The pork nachos are literally top 5 best things I've eaten. Smoked homemade verde salsa? Yes please. The owner, Doug, is a friendly outgoing person that you can tell is knowledgeable smoking meats and cooking in general. This weekend I tried their smoked chicken. It was sooo good! The moist, flavorful and extremely tasty! I also loved the cornbread that tasted like it was fresh from the oven! I also had his baked beans and tangy slaw that were great! Seriously good barbecue coming out of an old party store on M-20 just out of Mt. Pleasant. Brisket, pulled pork, chicken, burnt ends, sausage -- all the good things, plus sides like cornbread, two kinds of slaw, green beans, baked beans and more. They also have chalkboard specials; on the day we visited it was boudin, Cajun rice sausage that you NEVER find in outstate Michigan. It was so good. I also tried the tangy slaw, which is mustardy and has a little kick to it...also very good. My spouse had pulled pork street tacos... nice pulled pork. We have eaten at barbecue places around central Michigan, and I have to say, whatever smoking wood combo they use here smells and tastes the best. Service is fast and friendly. There's a seating area inside and a patio; if you sit inside you can listen to blues while you eat, which is perfect. I would definitely recommend this place to travelers. It is a little hard to spot from the highway, so keep a lookout on the south side of the road for an old party store building with a smoker going out in front. read more
