Excellent quick stop when heading to northern Michigan! We enjoyed tasty Bimibop and were out within 30 minutes- which was great as we were on a 6+ hour drive. This is quite literally my favorite place! I no longer live in Mt Pleasant but I go out of my way any time I head anywhere near that direction to stop in. Shin's was my introduction to Korean food and it doesn't disappoint. I've tried plenty of their menu but my comfort food is always the M4. Dak-Boul-Goom (stir fried chicken) with an order of Mung Bean Pancakes. The staff is always polite, the food quality has never changed. Definitely give it a try. read more

Authentic Korean Dishes- Ambiance is very casual. Order, pick up and sit in or take-out. No servers. I wanted spicy pork but they were out of it. We ordered crispy dumplings, beef/rice, beef stew and baby octopus. Stew was my least favorite and I did not try the octopus. Beef strips were tasty but the portion (child size) was very small for the price of $16.50. I could've eaten twice as much food, especially at dinner. I felt sauce was missing from the beef/rice. Kimchi was on the spicy side and the other side that came with the meals were good. Dumplings for $10 (to share) were highly-rated. Went here during a recent stay in town for a work retreat. We ordered take-out and I got a soup which is usually something I try to avoid with takeout. For some reason my instincts told me, it's going to be alright, and I'm glad I listened. The packaging was perfectly arranged so that I could really recreate how I imagine the meal would be prepared in person. No leakage or lack of warmth as everything was well insulated. I really enjoyed their stew and I found it was well spiced. I think it was the S3 but check as I imagine these rotate often. It was, forgive my spelling, the doek-bae-gi bulgogi. One of my criticisms of this dish in other establishments has been the cook of the meat, but Shins offered up a rather delicate cut and I found the balance of veggies to meat to strike an encouraging rather than overwhelming note. I will say that I had the best experience out of the group as everyone else was a little less pleased with their dishes. Kimchi pancakes were a bit crispy and bland. A co-worker let me try their bi-bin-bop and I thought it too pales compared to the dish I received. Sort of chewy tofu in another co-workers dish. It was their experience that keep from giving this restaurant 5 stars. All in all I will try this again, probably ordering the same thing... if you're tired of the same ol thing and your in Mt. Pleasant you could do a lot worse than Shin's. I recommend trying it out! read more

Well, I don't know about this place. I have never had Korean food before so I can't really comment on how good the food is compared to other places, but I really enjoy trying new things and I'd heard good reviews about this place from other people. I went with what the employee recommended for a non-spicy choice. It was over $12 for my meal without a drink and I thought that seemed kind of pricey, like a similar portion at a Thai or Chinese place would be closer to $8-10 (but maybe my comparison is way off the mark, since I have no idea how expensive the ingredients are). The staff was really nice and it didn't take long for them to make my take-out order. However, about 1-2 hours after eating I got SO sick. Food poisoning?? I don't know. I'm feeling back to normal today! But I don't think I'll be trying Korean food again for a VERY long time. read more

I was Excited about trying this place. I quickly placed my order after asking a few questions about heat levels. I explained I wanted a mild dish without burning heat. I was directed by the waitress to try the Dook-Bae-Gi-Bul-Go-Gi. When my bowl arrived it was not sizzling. It was BOILING! The cook who sat it down recommended placing ice cubes into my bowl until it cooled down enough to eat it. Once I got the temp down using the "Ice cube method" I was disappointed because it was a 10/10 for chili spice and heat. Not enjoyable at all. Ah, almost makes me feel like I'm back in California. Pretty authentic Korean food; not like mom's cooking but they're working with what they have. Since the Korean population here is much smaller, we can't get the same products so easily. I ordered seafood stew and couldn't resist getting a tiny can of plum juice to go with it. The drink was sickly sweet, just as I remember it. They also have the rice and the cinnamon drinks in cans. While we were waiting, our server brought us kimchi and seasoned shredded radish. They were both good so I polished them off quickly. I just moved to Michigan so I was a little surprised when our server asked if we would like more. Replenishing these side dishes is common in Korean restaurants (at least if they like you) so that made me pretty happy, especially since I tend to finish them before my food arrives. My seafood stew was presented bubbling away in a stone pot, accompanied by good white rice with flecks of purple from a few grains of black rice. This is how my grandmother made rice, minus some beans thrown in for protein (but are there actually any Americans lacking protein?). The broth was great and the generous helping of seafood included mussels, little squids/octopi, and a variety of fish cakes. I would have preferred it spicier and with fresh herbs but I know it is watered down for more sensitive palates and I have not yet spotted chrysanthemum greens or water dropwort in my local produce department. Normally I don't get dessert but my boyfriend had never tried green tea mochi ice cream before. I was hoping that he wouldn't like the texture so I could have the two pieces all to myself but that was not the case. :P Overall it is a genuine presentation of Korean food with the ingredients available. So it was a small mom and pop diner, reminded me of the shops back in Korea. The food was good, dol sot bibimbap came out hot and sizzling and the wifes bullgogi was flavorful and perfectly cooked. Straight up-- this is not great Korean food. But, it is the very homey with honest flavors. 1) Kimchi in the kimchi stew was nicely sour and added robust flavor, 2) rice cake in beef-bone soup was comforting and rib-sticking. 3) seafood soondubu had really good, fresh tofu and lots of seafood. 4) bibimbap had balanced flavors. Bonus: The rice they serve their food with is pretty good quality. Not from around here, but had lots of trouble yelping Asian food in the vicinity so we ended up here. Two gripes: minuscule amounts of meat in their soups/stews. They wrote 'bits and pieces' in their description and they honestly meant it. To the extent that their japchae was vegetarian. Their banchan game is lacking-- just some regular cabbage kimchi and sweetened daikon kimchi. Wish they offered at least one or two more! Shin's is the perfect place to get a delicious, cheap, and filling lunch just off the CMU campus. The restaurant is no frills but is always clean and the service is friendly and expedient. I usually get the sweet potato noodles or the beef bulgogi - both are delicious and come with a healthy serving of rice. Shin's has a number of vegetarian options and lots of choices for meat and fish dishes. There is something for the more adventurous eater as well as those with unadventurous palates. All entrees also come with a small miso-style soup, kimchi, and pickled radish that can be refilled by staff as desired. More than enough for a big lunch or to have leftovers. Be sure to come before noon or much later because there is often a lunch rush - the food will still come out fast but there may not be ample seating. read more

L. O. V. E. It here. It's one of the only escapes from the food chain hell that is Mount Pleasant. Small businesses for the win! If you eat in, you get endless side dishes (Daikon, kimchi, etc.). I think a lot of people are reluctant of the prices but often times if you order one entree and an app, then you're set for two people who like to share; /especially/ when you order the stew such as the seafood stew (which is highly recommended as someone who has lived by the ocean her entire life before moving to the Midwest). For baby steps, I recommend the dumplings. The drinks in the fridge window are a little intimidating when you walk in but they're plum drink is delicious if you're looking for something a little more than just their Coke products. read more

Having enjoyed Korean food all over the United States before, during and after serving active duty in the US Army for 7 years, I would have to say that Shin's has some of the best meals. Their food is always made to order, with fresh ingredients. Joy and Tom Shin make each plate and bowl of food themselves with attention to details. They try to accommodate and meet individual customer needs and desires in modifying these dishes, but within certain limits, or the food is no longer authentic. Korean food is very different from other east Asian foods and many of the negative comments on other posts seem to reflect unfamiliarity with the traditions of Korean cuisine. I have not had a bad meal at Shin's Korean Restaurant after eating there weekly since they opened. I enjoy the chance to have spicy flavorful Korean food but also enjoy milder dishes like Dol Sot Bi Bim Bap (mixed vegetables and rice in a hot stone bowl, with or without a slightly spicy Korean sauce), Bulgogi (marinated beef), or Japchae (sweet potato noodles and vegetable in a savory sauce. My favorites are dak bukkeum (chicken and vegetables in a light, spicy sauce), Sundubu-jjigae (bean curd, mushrooms, and onions in a light spicy broth, and "Haemul" version adds seafood, which is my preference), and Doenjang Jjigae (vegetable and tofu soup with soybean paste {miso} in the broth). My wife and son love the ojingeo-bokkeum (vegetables and squid in a spicy barbecue sauce. My absolute favorite dish in the summer time was Bibim naeng myun (cold soba noodles, raw carrots, onions and cucumbers with a spicy sauce) but, unfortunately, they had to discontinue this dish since some customers would order it and be angry that it was cold or different than what they envisioned it to be. The Shins work hard to NOT disappoint their customers, even if the disappointment is by customer misunderstanding. Shin's serves only 2 "kimchees" (raw vegetable side dishes). One is traditional spicy fermented cabbage and one is slightly sweet and slightly spicy shredded daikon radish. They are both consistently quite good tasting. A miso broth is also served with all non-soup dishes and is flavorful and comforting. Overall the food is great and the portions are good even by most American standards. Although every Korean restaurant has particular approach to Korean cooking, I would strongly recommend Shin's as one of the best! *A word of caution: when trying new dishes, especially from unfamiliar cultures, you are taking a risk. Words on the menu, from the server or from your friends cannot accurately replicate the nuances of taste and aroma from these dishes. read more

Korean food in Mount Pleasant? This pleasant surprise was tucked in the middle of a zombie strip mall off a very congested S. Mission St. It's nothing fancy, and, basically, a small Korean bohemian carry-out with sit down tables. It gets an automatic 3 stars just for it's existence and an additional star for serving some pretty good food. I had fried dumplings (very good, could have eaten a dozen), little won-ton like wet dumplings (nice portion, good taste), mung-bean cakes (good, tasted more like cornmeal), and bulgogi with rice (good, a bit oily though). Was this the best Korean food I've ever eaten? No, far from it, but most of the dishes were very good and, best of all, like all good Korean food it leaves one with that warm belly feeling. The absolute best place to eat in Mt. pleasant!! The authenticity of the interior and the menu may be a bit intimidating to some but the friendly staff will assist you in every way possible. Overall, the taste was delicious, the prices were fair (Korean food is usually pretty expensive), and the people were so nice. I have eaten here 4 times in as many weeks, and I live almost a half an hour drive away. The spicy seafood noodles were excellent, especially the chewy fish cake and fresh noodles (the included mussels and octopi were not tops, but easy to avoid). The kimchee is the best I've ever had, and the kimchee stew with added fresh kimchee was a highlight for me. Delicious pickled daikon. Standards like bibimbap and bulgoki seem to be strong, and I can't wait til I'm done obsessively working my way through the menu so I can settle on my favorites. One of the best restaurants in Mt. Pleasant, Shin's is run by a man, his wife, and sister-in-law who recently moved to Michigan from South Korea (according to a CMU Life article). Great authentic Korean cuisine, a little pricey but not unreasonable, and a nice relaxed atmosphere perfect for either dining with friends or just grabbing some food while doing homework. My girlfriend and I stick with the meat dishes - chicken, pork or beef cooked with tasty sauces, veggies, and served with fancy rice. There is also a vegetarian menu and a stew menu that are a little more exotic. The side dishes change seasonally but are usually delicious and come with free refills (2 sides and a soup come with each entree). My sister who taught English in South Korea recently went here with me and said it was authentic and delicious. Entree prices are around $9, appetizers for $1.50, authentic Korean beverages are available. Seating is limited in the rather small restaurant, but service is always good and the food is great. A nice change from all the Chinese restaurants in town. Highly recommended! read more
