Although I have ordered burgers here many times I found myself making my first delivery order tonight. NEVER AGAIN. I ordered the shrimp and the Chinese Special. The shrimp were so overcooked my dogs would not even eat them. Never had shrimp potato chips before. The sweet and sour chicken was the same. There was about a teaspoon of sauce over the driest crispy bits of chicken over uncooked vegetables. I cannot find the words to even explain how bad the meals were. If the fries had been warm they might have been good. Maybe. But NEVER AGAIN!!! read more

Great and friendly service. Burgers are fantastic and flavorful. They are pretty big so be prepared. 11/10 would eat here again.

*EDITED REVIEW!* Max's has recently been bought out and is under new management... absolutely not. The vegetables on the burgers are old and disgusting, the prices are ridiculous and they can't even omit ingredients you've asked to have removed. All in all, this place is officially off my "fast food" list. Such a shame, because they used to be amazing. --------------------------------------------------------- Their burgers are pretty good for the prices, and their fries are great too. I mostly order their sesame chicken wings and fried okra because they are just simply amazing. Aside from cooking those things myself, this is the best I've found in a relatively cheap burger joint. I usually only order one burger so I can't speak for much else on the menu. I've never actually eaten in the restaurant, always just ordered over the phone and had it delivered. We've never had problems with rude people or subpar food, it's always been a pretty pleasant experience over all. I was just surprised and very pleased that they deliver to Muldoon at all considering most of the burger joints on that side of town don't. read more

We've driven by multiple times and wasn't ever drawn in to check it out. Today, we were feeling sluggish, lazy, and in the mood for a cheeseburger so we gave Max's a try. It TOTALLY hit the spot! Good food for a decent price! They got a little bit of everything on their menu. It's not flashy but the food is good! We both had bacon cheeseburgers with fries and they threw in some fried okra. Best most affordable Bacon cheese burger in anchorage! The patty is well seasoned and super juicy! The bun is perfectly toasted (honestly the buns crispiness is the game changer!) Loved Max's Beefy Burgers!! At first was a little concerned, but its a great greasy hole kinda place. If your looking for something fancy or special then don't go there! If your looking for a cheap family friendly place with a crazy diverse menu then this is your place! Plus they deliver! It was also amazingly clean.. I was super surprised at that! I have 2 picky eating boys who never like the same thing and taking a family of four out to eat in Anchorage is sooo expensive! Here we can all eat for under 20 bucks and have a good meal! Been going here for awhile. Good burgers! Tried their "BBQ" tonight. Chicken good, mac salad was not good and we ordered a spring roll and got gyoza. Also got a taco for the first time in a long time from them. $5.95 (used to be $2). It was small like a regular no kidding shell you buy at Carrs (or Taco bell) and now they give you jar salsa vs the homemade they use to. The Taco was a complete rip-off and I am being gracious. I, like many people, have driven by Max's Beefy Burgers my whole life going "who would eat here, looks pretty sketch" or perhaps speculated about what it could be a front for. I am here to tell you it is so good. My dad and I took a chance and went there after seeing the under new management sign and looking at some more recent yelp reviews. It's a very clean interior, quick and polite service, and the food was delicious. They have steak burgers(which we got) and Korean/Hawaiian BBQ which we did not try but others who were there ordered and looked good enough to warrant another visit to try out! You could definitely tell the burger was made of ground steak, and the fries were seasoned and crispy! Big changes have been made here guys, give it a try! read more

I tried this place because I was tired of the big chains with their dried burgers. I'm glad I stopped in because it was the best non-chain burger I've had in awhile. I'm not a connoisseur by ANY stretch. But I am a purist so I don't eat burgers with cheese. Also, I grew up on the East Coast and as a kid I remember eating at a lunch counter IN A DRUG STORE. The hamburger I ordered at Max's tonight reminded me of that lunch counter patty. It was better than anything the big chains have, with maybe the Big Mac being the exception (yes, I know BMs come with cheese and it is the only time that I will eat a burger with cheese). I will definitely be returning to Max's whenever I am back in town! read more

I used to be a huge fan of Max's Beefy Burger. I loved their fries, their onion rings, and of course their Max's burger. Unfortunately, due to them being taken over by new management it came with some changes to their recipes. Their fries now taste extremely cheap and dry and are no longer salted, crinkle cut fries. Their onion rings are now battered in a much less delicious tasting batter and are instead breaded in some sort of flaky, messy batter that burns easily. The Max's burger was alright but it was sticking to the paper it was wrapped in and fell apart easily. Definitely a lot different than it used to be and sadly, not in a good way. I give this place a one star. My reasoning is that when we were ordering and sitting down waiting for our food, the cashier was staring us down. It didn't stop until she was called into the back to help prepare food. When we got our food I tried the soup I ordered. It was terrible. It seemed to be slop all mixed together. Either the prices online are not accurate or the person on the phone up charges for no reason. I have been overcharged many times and ordering from them for years. Today, when I called, they told me that without the extra patty on my burger which is only $2.50, my order would not hit the $15.00 minimum for delivery. However, my order totalled $18.00. I questioned the person on the phone about this, and they confirmed the price of the extra patty. I will not be ordering from them again. read more

The other reviewer who said it seemed like the girl behind the counter didn't want you there was spot-on in their assessment: she was the most unwelcoming hostess/cashier I think I have ever encountered. Almost angry that you showed up. My co-worker and I shared the same sentiment. Signs everywhere telling you that "fries were extra," don't move this, etc...reminded me of the Seinfeld Soup Nazi episode! Only 1 other customer in the place. Food, well, frozen then fried stadium food. That place is circling the drain: I'll never be back - had we not been in a hurry, we agreed we would have left immediately and gone somewhere else. Save yourself some time and money, and keep on driving. Sorry Max's, you just don't seem to be trying very hard to satisfy your customers. read more

You got to love Max's Beefy Burgers. These folks are some hard workers, but have a hell of a time with the Health Inspectors. Now I can only go "yech" when I read about, (or read about) some of the violations, BUT to their credit, they cleaned up their act, changed their menu, and work pretty darn hard. Their deliveries are always prompt, and the food is hot. To their credit, I have bee ordering from there for years, and never once got sick. Best $5 burgers in town. While we're Eastsider, we haven't been to Max's for years. But tonight, we just wanted a quick, good burger and a beer. Kept seeing Max's in the top round of burger joint in Yelp so we said what the heck. We can get a burger to go from Max's and a 6 pack of good beer at the Brown Jug next door and watch a movie at home. Sure glad we did. Both the Max's Burger and their Super Burger we're large, well appointed burgers that hit the spot and filled us up for under $20. Beer included. read more

I went to get a burger and the cook was coughing as if he had bronchitis and then another guy came straight off the street, walked in the back and started handling food. Did I forget to mention he bypassed the sink? After seeing all that I told them to eat the food that was fixed for me! One star is too much for this place! read more

The main selling point of Max's Beefy Burgers was that it delivered to my hotel near the University, which was something that few other local restaurants were offering! It certainly beat my prospective room service options, or foraging a meal from the free coffee and condiments in the lobby. The menu is ridiculously diverse, which left me concerned that they couldn't possibly do it all well... but overall, I was satisfied with my order. The patty melt I ordered was quite good - the burger was juicy and thick, the rye bread was crisp and flavorful even after being delivered, and all in all, it was one of the best I've had. The fries that accompanied it, however, were soggy crinkle-cut grocery store freezer fries - bleh. The frozen okra was also clearly freezer fodder... but as good as I get anywhere else (and I never expected to find fried okra in Alaska - we rarely get it in Maryland, and we're south of the Mason-Dixon line). And my kim chi was alright... not the best I've had, but it hit the spot. My suitemate ordered a chocolate shake and got strawberry - good thing she likes both flavors! If I'm back in Anchorage, I'd give this place another go... assuming they haven't been hit again by the health inspectors (eep!). read more

There were no customers when I walked in. A large lady behind the counter was filling tubes with plastic drink lids VERY SLOWLY, and never said a word. After a couple of minutes I moved so that I was closer to her. She glanced up and continued her painfully slow movements. After a few more minutes it was clear she had no intent on interrupting her routine task to take my order so I left and I won't be back. Zero stars! read more

I came here three times back to back because I thought that I had found a potential mom and pops burger place unfortunately the The individual girl working the cash register slender has the worst attitude I've ever come across she should not be in the food service industry my entire family on my third visit came in there to get some burgers fries and drinks and order some extra things to try, but the attitude of that person's dunk so bad it turns my stomach I really really really really really give this place all negative stars. It's always dissapointing when a cook skimps out on great burger toppings like Oh I don't know avacados or tomatoes. When Joe and I stop by we usually stick the burgers, everything else has been kind of dissapointing. I gave this place two stars and yet it sounds as if we have frequented this place for awhile and we have, it's convienent. The staff is friendly and it's fairly clean. The delivery service is pretty good but I have to disagree with John it's not always hot. Oh the fries are good but I would steer clear of the BLT, the veggies look all the wholesomeness was drained right out of them :( Oh, and they have the craziest phone ring tone ever. read more

We really enjoy Max's for a variety of reasons. Very good food, and consistent from order to order. We LOVE their HI style bbq short ribs! And the HI stylle BBQ chicken. And...and... Nice service (Delivery 99% of the time. We have eaten in the restaurant twice and found it to be very clean and simple with fast, friendly counter service), but we prefer to eat at home. The folks who answer the phone are friendly, patient, and get the orders right. They always read it back to you. It's often the owner who delivers your food! It is also great because of the VARIETY of food - if somebody wants tacos, you can get tacos along with the barbecue, burgers, chicken, fish sandwiches, etc. It's all good! read more

I've lived on east side for a long time and never stopped in here until yesterday. Food was ok and service was really nice considering the bad reviews they have on their service. The pricing is cheap and I appreciated that they had a good variety of plate lunch options. I ordered cheese fries and a mushroom burger. The cheese fries were what I expected (canned cheese over fries) - major gut bomb but again, I expected that. The burger was ok, not bad, not amazing. Even though it wasn't great I would probably go back again at some point to try a plate style lunch. read more
