We had fancy blinds installed when we bought our house in San Francisco; well, fancier than the simple aluminum models you see, but not those automated ones; my wife selected them, and they look great. We have since had to replace the pull cords on two of the units. They break. It happens. Maxwell was attentive, prompt, courteous, and efficient with the installation. I'd recommend them for that, without hesitation. But they also have been equally professional with repairs. They also are much more affordable than I would have expected. It is against my interest as a consumer to say this. My wife and I were surprised they had not raised their prices from before the pandemic to afterward, given inflation with everything else in the world. These folks deserve patronage. Maxwell Window Shades saved me more than $700 by repairing 2 sets of blinds. I am a general contractor who performs new construction, remodeling, and property management. On a property management project, the tenants requested that 2 sets of Levelor blinds be replaced. When I responded to the tenants' request, I noted that neither set of blinds would move up or down because the strings and cords of the blinds were dirty, rotted, and generally just a tangled mess. My experience with Maxwell Window Shades was outstanding! The owners and their adult children are third generation and fourth generation with this business and there is something about the quality and personal assistance you receive from a family owned shop going back 4 generations that cannot be duplicated any other way. I ordered new blinds for 5 windows. Originally, I was going to get malfunctioning ancient blinds repaired. They made a home visit and explained why it was more economical and attractive to get new mini blinds. They were right! They also measured my windows very accurately. The staff was patient and helpful with me in choosing a color. The blinds arrived quickly. The price was very reasonable. When I had to reschedule our appointment, the staff was so gracious. The day the blinds arrived from the manufacturer, it was time to install them and Andy Maxwell and his adult daughter, Rachel, were punctual and friendly. They even called me the hour before they arrived to confirm exactly when they were coming. The blinds themselves were gorgeous and very well made! The Maxwells installed them with care, yet quite quickly. Andy put little cord holders on the side of the windows so that I could wrap the cords and keep the cords away from my cat, a very nifty touch. I am a renter and needed to save the old blinds for the house owner and Rachel carried the old blinds for me to the storage area in the basement and arranged them quite neatly . Even though it took phone calls, showing up at their store and waiting for the appointment for in home measurements and waiting for ordering and completing installation they have been great. Andy came to do a service call. I called to confirm the appointment the day of. Showed up with a mask and short ladder. I had two blinds that were not cooperating and he fixed them both in about 30 minutes. We bought the house a couple of years ago, so he was not servicing blinds that his company installed. I was concerned that in this situation a blinds company might send more of a salesperson who just gives "lip service" to repairing the blinds, and then tells me I needed to spend thousands to replace the blinds and gives me a quote. Very pleasantly, that was not my experience at all! Andy fixed both blinds and gave suggestions for how I could avoid having to replace one of the blinds by using shims on both ends of one of the blinds where the gears were not meshing. Andy was friendly and knowledgeable, and I'll absolutely use Maxwell Window Shades when I need to replace my blinds. I highly recommend their services. read more

I looked at all of the usual big brands for a sheer roller shade and wasn't able to find what I was looking for. To my surprise Maxwell shades had the exact material I had in mind and was able to make me one with a fast turnaround and for much less than the big brand solar shade alternatives. They were beyond helpful helping me look through all the different brands, go over options and delivered everything on time. I opted for a self install and provided measurements myself - which I accidentally messed up. I thought I'd have to order a new set of shades and wait another 2 weeks but these guys went above and beyond and were able to reduce the sizing of the roller to the correct dimension in just a few days free of charge. I unfortunately have to write that my experience with Maxwell Shades was far and away one of the WORST experiences I have ever had with a business in San Francisco. I am left after more than 2 months of back and forth (during my maternity leave) with no window coverings in my home because of a total lack of professionalism and general courtesy. I placed an order for blinds (or so I thought) in the fall. I spent hours having the windows measured and going to the shop to choose fabrics with husband, who took time off of work. We placed the order and were told that we would hear from the shop when the blinds arrived in approximately 1 month. Six weeks passed and I heard nothing. I called repeatedly and was repeatedly told I would get a call back. I finally got a hold of Andy, my sales person (and the boss, according to Chris). He told me, verbatim, that the blinds should be in the next week and that he would call to set up an installation. When I did not hear from him the following week, I called again. It was then, after almost 7 weeks of waiting, that I was told the blinds were NEVER ORDERED. As a result of the screw-up, the store offered 25% off the blinds and said that they would order them immediately. I agreed and allowed them back over to my home because their own measurement notes were nonsensical and had to be redone. I went back into the shop and confirmed the fabrics. More than 5 days later, the blinds had still not been ordered. I spoke to Chris at the shop who told me that Andy would come from the job he was currently working on and place my order that night. The order was NEVER placed. I spoke to Andy the next day and he said he was swamped and working on it. Andy had no explanation when I asked him why it was that he would not prioritize my job when it was his fault that I was standing here without any window coverings after being lied to and waiting for months. I asked him to discount the order slightly more and he declined. As a result of their total incompetence , I cancelled my order. Here I am, 2 months later, with no window coverings done and heading back to work in 3 weeks. read more

We wanted to install new motorized solar shades in our living room so we visited a couple local shade stores in SF. One of those stores was Maxwell shades was located in the outer sunset. I went to their shop and they showed us few of their shade options and fabrics. We setup an in home appointment and Andy came out to take measurements. Their quote was a fair price and we went for it. After a few months the shade finally came in and we schedule for installation. Andy and another man came right on time and installed both large shades in about an hour. After they left I realized that my kitchen pantry door hits the roller whenever we try to open it. I explained this to Andy and he came back to adjust the shade resolving the issue. Maxwell shades did a fantastic job with excellent customer service. I had gotten a quote originally from the shade store which was shockingly expensive. I could not understand why simple roller shades would be this expensive! Luckily, I found out about Maxwells. I called them up and Andy came right over a few days later with samples and measured all the windows precisely for us. While they may not be as consultative as the Shade store, they are very accommodating in answering questions and their pricing absolutely cannot be beat. The faux wooden blinds that I purchased are no doubt beautifuI. I specifically bought blinds so I could lift them during the day and let them down at night. Given this, my purchase was a huge mistake and disappointment! I've never been able to lift them without spending up to 10 minutes and using all of the strength that I have in my arms because they're very heavy, and each time I try to lift them, they immediately fall back down. When I finally lift them up, they only go half way because they're so heavy. Once I get them up halfway, it takes forever to let them back down. Tonight I'm unable to let them down at all because they're stuck. This isn't the first time that this has happened, which is why I never bother to lift them. Shortly after I bought them a few years ago, I had to have Andy come to let them down, and he did me a huge favor by not charging me for the visit. He told me that if I needed to have him return, he was going to charge me. When I buy new blinds to replace them from another business, I'll only do so with a warranty that they'll actually do what they're supposed to do. My recommendation is that before you consider buying blinds from Maxwell Shades, you either get a warranty or be forewarned that your purchase only makes sense if you never want to lift them. What's most disappointing is that they don't stand behind them and they're not not interested in keeping their customers satisfied so they'll return the next time they want to purchase blinds again. read more

The owner (unfortunately I don't know his name) has been great at coming up with solutions to keep my old blinds functioning. He has helped me fix (by providing parts) or Maxwell has fixed my issues every single time. They are great. While I'm not looking to get rid of the blinds that I currently have :-), I know I will be buying my next set from Maxwells when the time does come. What a huge disappointment! Today is exactly two weeks since Andy came for measurements after waiting for nearly a month and a half before that for an appointment. We completely understand about living in a pandemic and things are different including delays. We were promised that we would get a quote for an entire home windows coverings project after our measurement appointment and a week later still nothing. We called into the store realized that the store never took down our email address to send it. We gave them the benefit of the doubt, so we called to give Marie our email address. Moments later, Andy called to ask questions which we have already discussed from his visit. It was like as if we never had the appointment with him and he said his notes weren't great. He then promised he'll get us the quote in a couple of days. A couple of days went by and we told ourselves, maybe they are busy but another week has passed with no quotes insight. We have it every chance, Andy and his family came came to us with high praises from a friend who had a completely different experience then we did. We wanted to do business with a family and local store and we wanted Andy to help us but they apparently don't want us. We couldn't help it but to think is it because we're Asian or is it because we're gay but whatever it is we are very sad that this could happen from a local family own store with great reviews. We read other one star reviews and now it made sense since we've experienced the same. Very sad and disappointed and hope Andy turns around and make it right for the next customer like us. read more
