Underwhelming meal at May Kelly's. Complete with nostalgic decor, I was really hoping it was going to live up to the reviews I had read. The chicken pot pie was awful. Large chunks of tough chicken. The puff pastry placed on top was not fresh. It had clearly been baked off previously. They didn't even pretend it was freshly baked on top of the pie because it wasn't even warm. This is definitely my favorite Irish restaurant/pub and wish it was closer to me. The decor is pretty cool and unique. My family and I enjoyed dining there. The service and food were fantastic. I had an Irish coffee with Bailey's and it was so good I had to have another. For my meal, I did the Irish sampler; 3 bowls consisting of Shepard's pie, beef stew, and pot pie. May Kelly's certainly has an eclectic way of being decorated. It has a lot of antique signs and objects throughout. We booked the "red room" for a party of 10 patrons which we scheduled far in advance. The people that were in the room before us ran over on their time, so we had to wait about 18 minutes after our reservation. The room is pretty cramped due to the length of the table, but it was cute and cozy. The max amount of people is 12 in this room. I had the taste of Ireland, which gives you three dishes in sample size: shepherds pie, beef stew & chicken pot pie. For $19.00 (kind of steep) it was okay. You can tell that there's a lot of pride, and it has a "just like mama used to make" method of cooking. Seems like they take a lot of pride in all of their dishes. It seems that everybody truly enjoyed their dishes, even the ones that had salad. Again, it was really nice that we were able to have our very own room. I would certainly come back and have the corned beef and cabbage meal; that's what my mother had and she said it was great. The only negative thing I would say is that our waitress seemed like she was a bit annoyed, having to wait on a large group and we needed to split our checks. Mashed potatoes were dry not creamy or seasoned. My companion had the chicken pot pie which was a bowl of a potato heavy stew with a piece of puff pastry laid on the top of the small bowl. This was my second time at May Kelly's and it will definitely continue to be a regular stop whenever we are in North Conway! It is such a unique little place with great hospitality and delicious food! It's called May Kelly's Cottage for a reason because the moment you step in you feel like you're in someone's home and you're greeted by a friendly face. The decor is quirky and tables are spread around multiple different rooms. They also have a nice bar area and outdoor space. They have a great menu with both Irish and American classics. Lots of comforting dishes that would hit the spot after a busy day exploring, hiking, or skiing. I had the roast turkey dinner. It was fabulous and included an absolutely enormous portion of tender roasted turkey breast. The turkey gravy was light but still loaded with turkey flavor, and the sides were delicious as well. My husband had the Reuben sandwich with fries. The corned beef was cut in a thick slab and was super tender. The fries were thick cut with skin, and nice and crispy. I was way too full for dessert, but I did have a glass of their homemade Irish cream and it was delightful. Just the right amount of booziness, not too sweet with hints of espresso and chocolate. I highly recommend it! As with many of the restaurants in North Conway they can get very busy. Go at an off time if you don't want to wait, but it's definitely worth the wait! read more

May Kelly's Cottage always struck me as maybe "too close to downtown" and "too big to be good," but stepping inside proved me wrong. The place is packed with authentic Irish décor--antiques, signs, old photos, and plenty of details to look around at and talk about. It feels genuine, lived-in, and full of character. The food held up too. I particularly liked the Irish Sampler, which lets you try the Beef Stew, Shepherd's Pie, and Chicken Pot Pie all in one go. It was hearty, flavorful, and a fun way to get a little bit of everything. Service was great, and there was live music in the bar while we were there, which made it feel even more like a true pub. If you're lucky with your seat, there's also a nice view, and I noticed what looked like outdoor seating for when the weather cooperates. It's the kind of place that wins you over with atmosphere as much as with food and drink. Near the hostess stand, I spotted a framed picture of the rally for Irish independence at Fenway Park in 1919--just one example of the many unique details scattered throughout. Overall, May Kelly's is a fun, authentic Irish pub experience in North Conway. I felt like good hardy food for our 44th anniversary and May Kerly's didn't disappoint! I made reservations, we were immediately seated and within 10 minutes we had our dinner! The turkey was so tender I did not need to use my knife. The stuffing was very well seasoned and when combined with some cranberry sauce, gravy and turkey was a perfect bite! We happened to be "in the neighborhood" for this past St. Patrick's Day and wanted to enjoy the vibe at an Irish Pub if we could. Well, we and EVERYONE else with the same idea descended on May Kelly's (one of only two or three Irish Pubs in the area--and likely the most popular). Our strategy was to come in the middle of the day--after the early crowd and before the late crowd--but they were still slammed. We got extremely lucky and were able to be seated at a 2-person high-top in the bar area that someone had just vacated.  Of course, it was a bit chaotic--it was St. Paddy's Day--but the bartenders who cared for the small bar and the high-tops were attentive. After a discussion about what I like, the bartender/server recommended an Irish whisky, and we looked over the large menu. Given the holiday, we went full-on Irish: me a Traditional Irish Shepherd's Pie and her a Corned Beef & Cabbage. Both were very good.  Overall, it was a great experience, and while we may skip trying to do this again on St. Patrick's Day, we will be sure to pop into May Kelly's when we are in the area. read more

I had the Fish N' Chips, excellent! My husband had the Harvey Gibson Sub, which is their black pastrami sandwich...that was amazing! Their fries are slightly seasoned and crispy - another yum! Coleslaw leans a little on the tart side, again, yum! Portion sizes are pretty good, so we felt you get your money's worth. We sat at a corner table and it was bench style with cushions and pillows, very comfy and cozy, and the view of the mountains outside our window, was gorgeous! Now comes dessert, if you have room....they are not on the menu, you ask your server. That night was only 3 to choose from, due to them getting ready to close for 10 days - this is every year, so everyone can relax and the place is ready for the busy season coming. She had me at Bailey's Cheesecake...the other 2 mentioned was a blurry sound - hahaha - anyways...that cheesecake was awesome!! What an experience May Kelly's really is! Visiting from out of state and needed a place for dinner. Luckily we were told 20 minute wait for our party of 4 but really only waited about 10. Once you enter this restaurant you are met with such an array of decor. Every inch of the walls are covered with something. We also were pleasantly surprised by some live music being played while we ate. The staff were all pleasant, attentive and helpful with suggestions of what to order. The staff was also extremely patient with the two young children that were in my party as well. The kids meals came out fast and first. We ordered the Irish nachos, cooked perfectly and tasty. We ordered the grilled peach goat cheese salad, very flavorful. Downside, there was too much dressing so I would suggest ordering it on the side. We also ordered the Harvey sandwich, very tasty! I ordered the grilled Reuben. Each half was so think that I almost had to deconstruct it to eat it. The fries were good. I would have loved an option of a half sandwich with a salad or a vegetable side. My husband ordered the turkey dinner. Again, what came out on his plate was enough to serve 3 or 4 people. The turkey was thick slabs, like 3/4 inch, not slices. At first, he was not sure if it was real or processed turkey. It had mashed potatoes, stuffing, and corn on the cob, so major carb loading.
