The May Kitchen and Bar Thai restaurant was just okay. Making a reservation was easy because I did it on OpenTable. When we arrived our table was ready which was very nice because the restaurant does fill up. I ordered the green curry dish and found it very sweet and very salty. I had beef in my green curry and in my green beads. The beef was very tough and almost had a spoiled taste to it. I wouldn't even chew it. I know people love this place because it has such high reviews but in my opinion it was just okay. read more

Where do I even begin?! My (now) husband and I decided to do an intimate, surprise wedding on short notice on Vashon Island. We have both lived in Thailand at different points in our lives and LOVE Thai food. When we found May's Kitchen and Bar, we knew we had found our wedding dinner spot. My husband got in touch with the owner, told them our story, and asked if they could accommodate a special order and make an exception to deliver it to our wedding location. They happily agreed and went above and beyond in their customer service to make it happen. On the night of our wedding, the owner delivered the order himself and brought us a bottle of champagne and a congratulatory card signed by every employee from the restaurant. And the food was DIVINE! We cannot recommend this place enough - great customer service, great food, and great people. Plus it doesn't hurt that this restaurant is on Eater's top 100 restaurants in Washington state AND the best Thai food restaurants. Just got back tonight from taking an out of town guest for supper, like I always do with all out of town guests. But tonight was even better than all the other times at May's Kitchen. I asked for a drink not on the menu as it had been seasonal, and the bartender made it right up for me.The food was just amazing, could not ask for anything more. Perfect - never thought I'd find the best Cambodian/Thai food on Vashon Island, but this is it!

My husband and I had dinner with friends at May Kitchen and Bar on Vashon two nights ago. What a fabulous experience! Great expense and effort has been put into creating an authentic Thai environment. The wood paneling on the walls is all Thai teak with beautiful carvings. The tables and chairs have been imported from Thailand. The fabrics are woven Thai silks and cottons and even the rice is served in coconut shells. The noodles in the Phad see iew were melt-in-your-mouth tender! Tom goes into Seattle twice a week to pick up fresh produce, including these freshly made noodles. The green curry lived up to its reputation for being extraordinary. All dishes were prepared with super fresh basil, lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves (they have their own tree growing out in back!) and other herbs and spices. Be sure to order the Thom Ka soup. May uses tender fresh galangal which gives it exceptional flavor. We also ordered the fresh spring rolls which are much better than the usual ones found elsewhere and came with a yummy tamarind dip. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. Racha greeted us at the door with a warm smile and our servers were polished, knowledgeable and prompt. Our table ordered several specialty drinks from the full service bar that had enticing flavors and names. Mine was a delicious concoction called the "rickshaw". Tom and May, co-owners, have created a restaurant that Vashon can be extremely proud of. It would make a super date night for couples coming over from Seattle by ferry this summer. Look for the two big carved elephants sitting on top of the restaurant roof located on the main street. Probably a good idea to make a reservation. read more

In regard to the south Puget Sound area, I can say with confidence that this restaurant delivered the best service and Thai dishes I've EVER had. It was nice to see a wide variety of dishes other than the typical Thai menu. Our party of 4 ordered a variety of appetizers, main entrees and desserts, ALL delicious. All guests are invited to go to the back kitchen to say hi to the owner and chef, May. I didn't but my husband went back and waved. Next time I will too! The restaurant atmosphere is warm and cozy. We find that the food here is very good, and it is indeed a beautiful place. I recommend reservations, they are often booked solid on weekends, and certain times of the year even full on weeknights. The service can be anywhere from Just average to excellent, depending on who your server is and how busy they are. My complaint with this place is the uncomfortable seating; they seat two people at at a tiny tall table on uncomfortable flat wooden stools with cushions that slide around on the seat, a square flat back, and nowhere to rest your feet that works for either my husband`s height or mine. In addition, the stools are a little too short for the height of the table. Alternatively, you can sit on a flat wooden bench, same slippery flat cushions, not even as comfortable as a bench at a fast food restaurant. Really needs some improvement! read more

How have I not known about this place until now! I generally don't like the usual palette of Thai food you get in most restaurants in the US, and only appreciate those that are truly authentic to Thailand. And guess what, this place has the best Thai food I've had outside of Thailand! We had the phad kee mao and the phad metmamuanghimmaphan - the flavors were spot on and had the trademark salty, tangy, sweet, and spicy infusion reminiscent of Thailand. I am STILL thinking about this place three days later. It is honestly some of the best curry I've ever had. I came here on a weekend getaway with my boyfriend for an anniversary trip (and he agrees also!) They surprised us with these beautiful hibiscus champagne glasses that tasted just as good as it looked. We've been to Thailand and this place was a close match. Best Thai food we've had in a very long time. The yellow curry with squash was so delicious we wanted to lick the plate. The store front of this quant establishment is very unassuming but stepping inside is like time warping to a colonial era south East Asian eatery. The staff is very friendly and helpful, don't bother trying to pronounce the dishes because they are authentically listed. Ingredients used are not your typical affair, for example the pad Thai comes with a banana flower. Order a Mai tai while you wait for the first round of spectacular vegetable rolls. The dipping sauces and curries are something you will be dreaming about for weeks to come. Don't like white rice? Then get some red sticky rice served in a hollowed out coconut shell. There isn't a dish on the menu that won't leave you wanting more. This is the kind of ethnic cuisine you will come back again again for and never get bored. Ps- make reservations ahead of time. We celebrated our fourth wedding anniversary at May Thai. We had the watercress, Pad Se Ew and (my favorite) the Kobucha squash dish! Everything was perfect in flavor and delivery. I was in on 8/22/14 and the food at May Kitchen is incredible. By far the best Thai that I've ever had. The kitchen really knows what it is doing. There are some serious problems with the front of house staff though. Our service was terrible. The server was completely over enthusiastic, and seemed to be reciting a very cheesy script. We also only saw her twice during our 2 hour stay, and had to repeatedly walk to the bar to order drinks. The bussers were helpful, but they didn't seem like they had the training that they needed. By the end of the night, we ended up waiting 40 minutes for our check, with empty water glasses and dirty plates on the table, and no apology or even acknowledgement from our server. I would recommend sitting at the bar. I'll definitely visit again because the food is 5 star, but with 2 star service, I'll be sure to get take out. read more

I have wanted to eat at May Kitchen and have heard wonderful things about it. The one thing I was a little concerned about was the covered windows - never sure if they were open, wanted to see inside, etc. Tonight I went there for dinner and now totally "get it"! I felt as if I was on vacation or in another land. The decor and atmosphere was wonderful and relaxing. The service was so friendly and welcoming. The appetizers - fresh spring rolls - were delicous and, just that, FRESH. For entrees we got red Jasmine rice, Phad Thai (which was dressed at the table with explainations about the ingredients) and - my favorite item - the Gaeng Normai Gai.
