Thai food that made me think of Thailand. Creative, delicious, fresh takes on the traditional menu. The flavors of the salad rolls sparkled with a perfect blend of crisp leaves, sweetness, lime, and spice. Spectacular! I went in late on Friday evening without reservation. They were able to seat me, but with only one person working the tables, service was pretty slow. I ordered an entree that had chicken and basil. It was good except the soy sauce was heavily sweet. The Thum Yum which is like a green papaya salad was good, but more sour than usual Thai papaya salad. It didn't have the usual umami like I have at other places. I ordered a 3rd dish to go, Pad Se Ew with fried tofu. Again, they used more sweet soy sauce than the typical sauce they make for this flat noodle dish. A day trip to Vashon 8/28/24; looked up reviews and made reservation. I rely on reviews when planning things; thus I have to be honest. Reviewing food is so subjective, for me: the place is too dark for a restaurant; thick curtain by the front; low lighting inside; table closed to one another; barely see the food you eat - ambiance: not a good vibe. We had phad see iew beef; phad thai prawn; and lard chicken. Compared to other Thai places, the noodles dishes were a bit on the sweeter side. The lard is way below average; the chicken was very watery and it didn't have the savory that I usually experience with this dish. Their price and portion were OK for being on the island. I've always enjoyed May's for dinner options but I'm posting to give a shoutout for the brunch we had Sunday. Everything was really good. Chicken and Waffle was delicious and portions were large. We ordered two appetizers and one main to share. One of our appetizers never showed up. After a very long delay and as the main was being served we asked what happened to the other appetizer - the waitress asked if we would like it with our main! I decided to do some research on the owner and Chef, May Chaleoy. I learned she used to be co-owner of May in Wallingford. She left the place over a year ago due to disagreements with the co-owners and opened May Kitchen & Bar in August 2012. When my boyfriend was in a mood to do a random day trip outside of Seattle, you can guess what was the first place I suggested. ;) Like what The Stranger and some Yelpers have already mentioned, May Kitchen and Bar is gorgeous. The walls are covered in mahogany panels with beautiful flatware from Thailand. We got there right when the place opened so I had a few moments to admire the restaurant before the crowd came in (around 5:30 pm). Reservations are highly recommended since the place does fill up quickly. We settled on ordering several dishes, since we did journey all the way from Seattle to check out the place. Thanks to The Stranger, we started off with their yum phak boong (fried Thai watercress served with a side of tamarind sauce). Our server told us we had the option to either pour the sauce over the fried greens and eat with a fork or to use our hands and dip the greens in the sauce. I prefer the hand method just because I like to go light on sauce. This appetizer was surprisingly light yet crispy. The sauce was lightly sweet and went well with the greens. Right when we finished our appetizer, our server brought out the following dishes: Red rice, Pra ram loang soang, and gaeng normai gai. The red rice kind of reminded me of brown rice but softer and was nice to use to soak up sauces. Now for the other two dishes: Pra ram loang soang consists of baby corn, bean sprout, red pepper and chicken stir fried in peanut sauce. My favorite part of the dish was the peanut sauce since it was so light and flavorful. I need to learn how to make this sauce because I could eat this with anything from meats to vegetables! The gaeng normai gai is a dish that has spicy chicken stir fried in May's signature red curry with bamboo shoots and Thai basil. I really like the kick of spice in this dish and again I didn't find the curry heavy. Our last entree came out later, which was May's infamous Phad Thai. It came out beautifully presented on a wooden platter with a banana leaf. Sitting on the leaves were thin rice noodles with egg and chicken in tamarind sauce, bean sprouts, banana blossom, chives, limes and ground peanuts. Our server asked us how spicy we wanted it (May does not do the star system like most Thai places), added spices then mixed it in front of us. Unlike most phad Thai I've had, this was not swimming in grease, ketchup-like or overly sweet. This phad Thai had the perfect balance of savory, sweet and bitter (thanks to the banana blossom). Even though we were almost feeling stuffed, we went ahead and ordered their Coconut creme brulee. May has an interesting way of presenting this dessert. The creme brulee was accompanied with three spoons with scoops of pineapple confit, and shreads of toasted coconut decorating the plate. Breaking into the brulee did require a little more effort than the usual tap since it was thick. Surprisingly, this dish was not too sweet but very enjoyable. Personally I think its worth the trip to eat at May's. I'm glad I got to have my last dine-out meal of 2012 there. read more

Four of us were lucky enough to nab a lunch reservation on their first day experimenting with dine-in on the patio. It was our first time on Vashon and at May, and both were fantastic. The service was incredibly friendly, our server explained the process to us, answered all of our questions, and gave incredible menu recommendations, even down to what proteins he liked with which dishes and why. We got Thai iced teas, Thai iced coffees, a couple of cocktails, and a mocktail that our server whipped up for me with mint, ginger, grapefruit, and some other juices that was just delicious and very refreshing (highly recommend if you're not partaking for whatever reason). For food, we got Phad Kee Mao with chicken, Phad See Iew with beef, and two orders of what our server recommended - Grapao and Kaidao with pork (he said it's a staff favorite, but the public hasn't totally caught on yet). When we were finished, our plates were completely empty, and everyone was satiated. We're still talking today about how good it was, so I figured this one needed a formal review. The best food and the nicest people! It's part of our weekly rotation to order from May Thai -- I'm not sure they need the hype since they're well respected on Vashon. If you're coming for a day trip, this (or Ruby Brink) are the two best dinners on island in my humble opinion. I don't have photos (we always start eating too quickly!) but there are three dishes that stand out in the many many times I've eaten or ordered: northeastern thai style larb - I order with tofu, which as of this week is no longer an option and I'm devastated. Please bring the tofu larb option back to Tock! yum phak boong (watercress) - We haven't had this since Covid19 as it's fried wouldn't travel well in the long drive home, but it's a game changer once dine-in is back in the picture one day. papia phak sot - most restaurants have similar fresh roll fillings, but May uses mango and wide leaf lettuce and a great tamarind sauce that really stand out. They always include thank you notes and (once) free wine and have been responsible during covid. Overall - they're one of the islands gems! read more

If you are in Seattle, my first tip for you is to take the ferry to Vashon Island and go here, whether you like Thai food or not. I heard lots about this place and yes, Definitely get reservations if you are coming on a weekend during dinner. The outside of this place is inconspicuous. The windows are covered and it's in an older building. But once you go in it's like your taken away to another place. The atmosphere is bustling and happening, the light is dim and it definitely is the spot to be on Vashon. Has beautiful Thai decorationa. And wood carvings. The bar is located in the center and has gorgeous lights dotted through out. The food seeks for itself. I love Thai food and has always been one to not care for the fancy presentation but this place does it well and with class. One of the teas we ordered was a. Flower tea with lime. And comes with a cute elephant tea kettle and as you pour the tea it is blue, but once you squeeze the lime, the tea turns purple! The fried watercress is a must. The sauce is perfect. I didn't think it was gonna be good but it proved me wrong. We got the tom yum soup, phad Thai, and green curry. The soup. Was by far the best. Just the right amount of spice and lemongrass. The green curry was delicious! Get it with the mix of white and red Jasmine rice. The curry is on the sweet side. The phad Thai is brought out and constructed tableside. With Thai bananas to taste on the spot. All together it was a wonderful meal, great service, and all I have to say is this is a must visit place. We spent a weekend on Vashon Island and my hubby searched for restaurants on the island and May popped up. Read the reviews and look at the pics we were excited to try it out. Unfortunately they were closed for dine in . Take out only. So we decided to order take out and eat as we were on the ferry back to Fauntleroy. I didn't eat or open all the boxes of food but when I came home at night I decided to open the box of pork satay and it was raw inside!!!! That was bad. Other than that the kids seemed to like most of the food other than the Yum Nuea my daughter ordered that and she said it wasn't good at all. And we are from Thailand so we definitely know Thai food. The PadThai was super expensive $18 add shrimps for an additional $7. Making that Pad Thai street food a total of $25..... phewwwww. Most expensive pad Thai I ever had LoL . But they gave us large shrimps and not over cooked. Service was good. So I took off one star for the satay that was raw and one star off for the foods that were easy cook street food but super pricey. But if we go back to Vashon Island we will definitely be back. May Kitchen and bar was the one spot everyone said we had to try on Vashon. We felt this was an above average carryout Thai food experience. The Pad Thai had some nice flavors but we felt it could have benefitted from shaved peanut and the chicken was slightly overcooked. We had a red curry dish, and it had great flavor (even better when served over red rice). Finally, we tried the tofu grapao and kaidao, likely my favorite dish of the night. Served over white rice, the tofu was perfectly fried and the dish had great seasoning to make for a perfect entree. We would recommend and will be back on our next stay. If I could, I would give May Kitchen on Vashon Island ten stars out of five. Yes, like Bramble House, it is absolutely worth a trip to Vashon. This was handily the best Thai food I have ever had; the owner and servers were sweet and attentive; the service was perfect and the food! Just amazing. Also, the decor of the restaurant is gorgeous. It is not so fancy that you couldn't go there for a nice evening out any time you wanted, but also appropriate for an anniversary, etc. (but we both had on jeans and felt very comfortable.) We had a fried roll stuffed with rice noodles as an appetizer, delicious on its own but elevated to superb by a fresh tamarind dipping sauce. For dinner, we had a Thai green curry -- made with coconut cream, not milk and SO rich and good -- but my highest recommendation is reserved for the eggplant with soy beans. I had a reservation for 5pm and was the third party to be seated at the bar as I was alone. The gentleman who was making drinks at the bar looked me in the eye three different times (menu was closed) and then proceeded to take the orders of 2-3 other (white) folks who had just been seated and not mine. When he finally took my order, his affect was flat + uninterested compared to how he had just jovially greeted the other (white) individuals next to me. My appetizer came out and it was wrong. As I sent it back to the person who brought it out, he casually said "Welp, sorry." He also didn't ask for ID's from ANYONE at the bar until two other people of color came in and sat down. Cocktails: Delicious. Food: Fantastic. Service: Not the most impressive, friendly, or inclusive. For this being the best Thai in Seattle, I need the service to match the quality of the food. The first time we came here, it was AMAZING. The second time was a bit disappointing. We drove over from Seattle, primarily to come back here. On google it said it was open, but when we arrived, it was closed and only doing takeout starting at 4pm. We ordered the same thing we had ordered the first time: beef pad kee mao. It honestly didn't taste like pad kee mao this time. It was really bland, but extremely spicy. I couldn't eat much of mine because of all the spice. This place just didn't hit home this time. I will try again and hope to have a similar experience that I did my first time. read more

Great venue on a quaint island. Excellent friendly staff. I recommend reservations or come when they open, or you'll be waiting. Bar staff is attentive and prompt. Phad Thai is serviced at your table, which was a unique experience. The noodles were tucked under a banana leaf, hot to order. Then, blended with fresh bean sprouts, baby banana leaves, fresh hand torn green onions and dry mix. The service at the table made the dish taste that much fresher with just the right amount of cook time for the bean sprouts and green onions. The flavor was on point, great subtle hint of fish sauce and not too over powering like other Thai restaurants. A must order dish. Pad Prik Khing was bursting with salty and savory taste. Green beans were a tad bit over-cooked, but the flavor made It worthwhile. I highly recommend this place when visiting the island. read more

PHENOMENAL Don't know how else to best describe the whole package here! Truly amazing and unexpected! Didn't know food could have such flavors, very impressive. Had pad thai, with chicken, and the flavor profiles present on the plate truly outstanding. The presentation was extremely impressive too! Chicken was somewhat bleh, but the rest of the dish more than made up for that. Also had some type of pork appetizers. While the pork was also bleh, the sauce was out of this world great! They are very very busy and reservations are strongly advised. Not many open seats at all. All the plates I saw looked great and there was not a grumpy face in sight! So excited to try this restaurant! First off the ambiance was funky at best. Lots of fabrics covering windows maybe in an attempt to keep the place warm. Also their were no Thai servers at all. That being said, the servers were great. The fried watercress was the best- mostly because it was hot. The trout was meager in size and not too flavorful. The satay and ribs were tough. The pad thai was unremarkable. Our party was large (6) but it seemed to me like a lot of the food was cold by the time I got some. Overall it was okay but not worth the hype. read more

This is without a doubt some of the most exceptionally delicious Thai food I have ever had. There's a reason you need to her reservations well in advance. The two really standout dishes for me were the Deep Fried Watercress and the Pad Thai. Deep Fried Watercress sounded kind of gross to me to be honest, but my sister in law had been there before and insisted it was good. It was just the right amount of crispy and not soggy at all. The coconut peanut sauce was heaven. As for the Pad Thai, it's mixed at the table with ingredients like raw sugar and baby banana blossoms. Everything is super fresh and creative. When asking friends for recommendations on Vashon, the one common thread was May Kitchen and Bar. Having experienced it, I see why. We expected the food to be amazing and it was - but the experience blew us away even more. All the sauces were tasty, and vegetables cooked to the sweet spot of firm but not too firm, etc. Given we are in the middle of COVID 19, we only eat in outdoor, we'll ventilated restaurants - and we discovered they have a picnic in the park option at no added cost. They had a tent, chairs, tables, games, a picnic set, and a bottle of sanitizer set up.... You show up at the time, they drop off the food, and you leave when you are done- it was such a great experiencei. Vashon's 75 degree weather. We'll be back for sure read more
