I was new to Portland and needed to find a dentist. After browsing through Yelp, etc. I made an appointment with Dr. Chang. (Admittedly, the location helped--I live about a mile from her office.) Apart from one technical glitch early on--I filled out a form on her website, asking to be contacted for an appointment, and never heard back--my experience with Dr. Chang's office has been superb. The office is easy to find and very nice--bright, cheerful, and clean. Everyone from the receptionist to Dr. Chang herself is exceptionally pleasant and helpful. And Dr. Chang clearly cares about her work and her patients. She spent A LOT of time with me during my initial exam and cleaning, checking everything very thoroughly, asking me lots of questions, and really listening to my answers. She even asked to watch me floss, then gave me pointers in how to do it better. When I checked out I realized, to my dismay, that Dr. Chang was not included among the dentists covered by my plan. (My bad for not checking that beforehand.) Rather than find another dentist, I immediately called my insurance provider and upgraded my plan so I could return to Dr. Chang. This is a very organized dental practice. I went in to schedule an appointment before my insurance ended and they were able to squeeze me in. Furthermore my teeth cleaning was not done with power tools. I was able to have the lower two quadrants on the very next day. My last dentist took a couple months to go from the top two quadrants to the bottom two. Debra, the insurance guru was on the phone instantly to receive approval from insurance company. There were no surprises after services. Sadly Dr Chang was my first dentist to explain, show and test my toothbrushing and flossing skills. I failed both tests but she was gentle with me and there were no gasps or eye rolls. The only reason I did not give them 5 stars it's because I'm not in the income bracket to go to a celebrity rock star dentist. My 30 percent of my deep cleaning, initial consultation and parting gifts including a power Oral B toothbrush, floss, toothpaste and rubber tooth gum line tool came out to $450. I blame mostly Delta Dental Insurance. If I had a better salary I would not have cared. I'm between careers now and I'm concerned about my current expenses. Been going to Dr. Chang for a couple years now after a decent lapse in dental care. While taking care of deferred maintenance on your teeth isn't always the most fun one can have, Dr. Chang has exhibited excellent craftsmanship in all the work she has performed on my teeth. In addition, the dental hygienist, assistant, and front office staff are competent, friendly and helpful and they have all done a great job managing the pandemic over the last year. read more

Dr Chang and her group are always amazing. I'm a doctor and have been seeing her for several years after she was recommended by another physician. She and her staff provide excellent, thorough care, and she is straightforward but not overzealous in treating. There are several instances she has opted to "just watch" areas of concern, recommending better home/ conservative care. My procedures with her have had wonderful outcomes and were performed very efficiently. Her techs are thorough, gentle, friendly, and the whole experience is fantastic. Her office sends email updates on their handling of the pandemic, and they were 100% careful and sterile in my recent visit. I'm thrilled to have such a great dentist. read more

I've been going to Dr. Chang for about 12 years now and thought I'd write a review now because of how the practice has managed the pandemic. They've kept us up-to-date with a monthly newsletter throughout, and during a recent cleaning, I had a chance to experience firsthand the measures they're taking to protect the safety of both patient and practitioner. Reading through the other reviews before writing my own, I had to laugh at the similarities between my experience and that of Lars S (9/14). I too came to Dr. Chang on the recommendation of my former dentist, who knew her as an undergrad and couldn't praise her enough. And like Lars, I've also had her work (in my case a partial crown) spontaneously praised by a dentist. I don't think these parallels are a coincidence. She's just that good! read more

Dr. Chang was my childhood dentist from the early 90s-mid 2000s. After many years of braces, and a bad dental experience later in life, I started experiencing high anxiety over visiting the dentist, so I just avoided going. Recently I decided it was finally time to work on this anxiety and give my teeth the love health they deserve! I remembered Dr. Chang being gentle and educational, so I booked an appointment with her office. The gal at the front desk, Heather, was lovely and very communicative. Dr. Chang greeted me when I arrived, and after chatting a bit remembered me and my family! She also did a great job calming my nerves before I saw her dental partner, Dr. Mistry, who was working his last day at the clinic but was also outstanding. The dental assistant (Deborah possibly?) was also amazing! Unfortunately for me, I have a few procedures coming up but I do feel slightly less anxious knowing I am in good hands with Dr. Chang and her fabulous team :) read more

Dr. Dahm is the best! I have an extensive dental history (double jaw surgery, implants, bridges, root canals, etc.) and as a result, have severe anxiety with dental visits. Instead, speak with other dentists in Portland. Time and time again they will tell you that May Chang is the best in the city. Dr. Chang is an excellent dentist. I was referred to her when I moved here 10 years ago, by my dentist in another city, who had gone to school with her at UCSF (one of the top schools in the world!). SInce then she has taken excellent care of my family's teeth. What I like about her: 1. She and her staff are kind, attentive, prompt, caring and helpful. 2. Dr Chang is excellent at diagnosing and has great technical skills. My friend who is a dentist in San Francisco looked at an inlay she did for me and was very impressed with her work. 3. She does not do unnecessary X-rays 4. My hygienist, Phong, is great. She pays close attention to change from visit to visit and she makes getting your teeth cleaned as comfortable as possible. 5. You are always greeted with a smile at reception...and paperwork is handled very smoothly. Deborah is so organized that before you've finished your appointment she has her schedule book open for your follow-up, and all of your insurance paperwork fully arranged. read more

After having a number of fillings throughout childhood, I needed a lot of dental work. Dr Chang thoroughly and meticulously replaced the worn out fillings with seamless gold crowns. She also prepped and placed an implant that gave me the best smile I've ever had! For quality dental work, I doubt you can find better. read more

After recently moving to NE Portland from Milwaukie, I needed a new dentist but procrastinated for some time because of my dental-phobic issues...I really wanted someone who would just let me get my teeth cleaned and leave me alone, but figured that wouldn't happen given the delayed maintenance work that I knew would need to be done. I finally settled on Dr. May Chang due to her positive recommendations and made an initial appt. I think that the staff could see me coming a mile away - another one of THOSE patients who hate going to the dentist and want to refuse everything and has no pain tolerance whatsoever in their mouths... Still, they were unfailingly pleasant, even when I cried during dental probing and again during the full-mouth x-rays (which are so painful in a small mouth!). Once Dr. Chang announced the long list of things that needed to be done (including fixing cracked/crumbing fillings, fixing a cracked molar, etc.), I was just a basket case. But I bravely made 3 subsequent appts to get the work done over while insurance deductible is met for the year. The first of those appointments (to plane my upper molars with deep tissue pockets) turned out to be quite a traumatic experience as I was reminded, yet again, that i don't cope well with dental injections. I was crying, trembling, with my rational brain completely off-line - what a mess. They were able to get me numb and do the work, but then suggested that 1) my next appt is preceded by a pre-med for relaxation and 2) we combine future appts as possible to minimize the need for injections. They didn't want to see me so upset and just make it all worse for me. So this morning I had round #2, pre-medded, and what a lovely difference. I actually dozed most of the time, with their headphones on listening to music, really not caring much about what they were doing in my mouth. Three hours flew by, and I was smiling on the way out of the door. Although I will always be dental-phobic, Dr Chang and her staff are trying as hard as they can to get my mouth back into health shape without further traumatizing me, making my fear worse. I think we've got a good start. She has been so patient with me, working hard to balance her need to do good dental work with my need not to be further traumatized. I think we'll work it out, and she gets 5 stars for the effort that she and her staff are putting forth. read more

I have lived in Portland for almost 20 yrs and by far she is the best dentist I have had (I have been with two others in the past). Her clinical expertise impressed me. I have had bruxism for as far back as I can recall and have several crowns. My previous dentists were quick to provide the "latest and greatest" dental appliances which may work for some but had failed me and in one case caused more damage. She is the first dentist to provide a bite guard that has lasted over a year AND the first one to identify that my bite was off and worked to repair the problem. Subsequently my TMJ has dramatically improved and my crowns fit great. She may not have all the latest experimental gadgets larger clinics may offer but her work is solid, she is caring, honest and direct when it comes to dental care. The clinic is very clean, well organized and her staff are quite friendly and compassionate. I went to her on a recommendation from a coworker and I would recommend her to friends and family without hesitation. read more

So I made an appointment for this place on reccomendation from practically a stranger. Of course I couldn't find it at first, but the recpetionist, a most friendly woman, pretty much talked me through getting there. Once there I was offered my choice of a plethora, yes I said plethora, of hot beverages, I went with apple cider. Anyway, Dr. May Chang kicked booty (and plaque). My favorite thing about this place is that it is run by all ladies and as a lady I have to say it made my experience much more comforable, and easy going. But this is not to say that a dude wouldn't appreciate the experience as well. In short, this was one of the best dentist experiences I've had and not just for a "dentist experience." You can feel good about putting your teeth in their skilled hands. And oh yeah, the gloves were grape flavored :). And the goody bag wasn't a bad touch either, not your run of the mill plastic toothbrush and waxy cheap floss- but the good stuff! read more

As a retired physician I am very aware and appreciative of the attention to detail that I have found in Dr. May Chang's practice. My fist encounter with the practice was an emergency visit after my previous dentist had retired. The staff was very responsive to my dilemma, and Dr. Chang fit me into her schedule that day, got me started on antibiotics and referred me to an endodontist. On my first scheduled visit I was very impressed by Dr. Chang's hands on training in proper oral hygiene, the basis of oral health. Dr. Chang's website has a lot of very useful information, including what to do in dental emergencies, as well as outlining the measures taken in the office to keep patients safe during the pandemic. Dr. Mistry is Dr. Chang's partner, and has the same focus on patient care that Dr. Chang does. Had been going to Dr Chang for some time -- great work -noticed she had a slight prima Donna attitude but I looked past it because of her good work -- yesterday at my appointment she had an unbelievable outburst in her office that I think the entire office heard- toward me --for reasons she stated in her chastising -- I reiterated her good work to her --and she then gave me an ultimatum -to paraphrase - I do everything she says or I can find someone else for care ( I went to another dentist for a crown due to the price -- no insurance )-- I gently said I'd find other care and thanked her--- she looked very angry -- she went over the xray and I said thanks -- thanks and left -- it wasn't until wonderful Debra in the front asked if I was OK that I realized the verbal abuse I was just subjected to --not sure how this will help others but if you are a thinking, aware person maybe it's best to find another good dentist --I read more

My family recently switched to Dr. Chang due to the closeness of her office to our house. My husband and I had fine appointments with no problems. When it came to our children, however, she lacked the proper pediatric manner. I found her to be a little impatient with my compliant yet chatty daughter and not so good with my daughter who has dental anxiety. She got very frustrated and awkward right away when my daughter expressed fear. She didn't explain what was going to happen or the procedure before starting and we ended up bailing because things were getting too stressful. I think she is fine for adults as she is competent and her staff are marvelous and sweet and the hygienists were great, but she's definitely not a great pick for children or anyone with dentist issues. read more

I've been going to Dr. Chang for 10 years, initially at the advice of my partner, who'd already been seeing her for much longer. Over this period of time she has replaced a lot of previous work from a decade of so earlier. Among other fixes, I got some gold inlays in some molars, which are so beautiful I still admire them secretly in the bathroom mirror. With the help of the thorough and consistent teaching of home care I get from the Fabulous Phong -- the hygienist -- I expect them to last for my remaining 40 or so years on the planet. I've heard that there are only one or two dentists left in town who know how to do gold. Apparently it's a dying art, because everybody opts for the cheaper porcelain fillings -- which are not really cheaper, since they have a limited lifespan. Besides doing excellent dental work, Dr. Chang is so compassionate, and never makes me feel bad for being such a pain wimp that I can't even stand the needle that you get to prevent the pain. Her assistant is totally knowledgeable and ON IT, anticipating everything Mae Chang is doing, and she too is extremely kind and sensitive about what the patient is feeling, plus she is highly skilled at understanding what a patient is saying in spite of what their mouth is full of. Pam has a whole bag of tricks for making the patient feel as comfortable as possible during a procedure. And then there's Debra (Deborah?), the wonderfully welcoming, amiable, and astute receptionist, who can speak, understand, and translate the impossible language of insurance, billing, and the like. In short, I have never experienced a single less-than-wonderful staff member at Dr. Chang's office. Quality attracts quality, and Dr. Chang knows how to pick 'em. And the extremely low turnover proves they're not just pretending to like what they do. Who doesn't hate getting dental work? But I really look forward to seeing the people that go with it! read more
