If you're looking for decent Chinese in Durango, this is the place. Great hot and sour soup. Everything we tried was good. Clean place, good service, good lunch specials. Is it the best Chinese I've ever had? Of course not. But for Chinese outside of a major city with an active Chinatown, this is just about as decent as it gets. If you are ok with sweet and sour sauce made with applesauce and kung pao sauce that just tastes, well, brown, and bamboo shoots and water chestnuts as the vegetable for everything then this might be for you. My wife and I stayed in Durango for a couple of nights while visiting a friend in Colorado. We are originally from Hong Kong but have lived in California for more than 40 years. While in Durango, we were craving for some Chinese foods, so we gave May Palace a try. The lady owner is from Taiwan, speaks Mandarin, but understands some Cantonese. The foods were decent for a Chinese Restaurant in a place with so few Chinese residents. I give it 5 stars just because it fulfilled our expectation, not because it has 5-star authentic Chinese foods. By the way, the service was top-notched! read more

My husband and I thought the food was above average here. The sesame tofu was flavorful. What I also liked about the tofu was how it was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Many places overcook their tofu. The broccoli and mushroom plate also tasted amazing and they did not skimp on the quantity of veggies. read more

This was some of the worst "Chinese" food i have ever had. The entire party i was with was quite disgusted and we ate less than 15% of all of the food we purchased because it was so gross. I should have taken a hint that every Chinese place in Durango has 1 star beside this place, that if the others are so bad, this one would really only be acceptable. I should have further taken a hint from the fact that they were nearly empty just moments after the 4th of July "parade" was over, while all other places we tried to go to have 40 minute waits or higher. All of the food we got (Sesame Chicken, Garlic Chicken, Orange Pork, Chicken Cho Mein, and Deluxe Fried Rice) was greasy, soggy and tasted like it was made from mostly stray alley cats. Even the fried rice and chow mein were no good, how do you mess up fried rice? I was so in the mood for Chinese that i fought to convince everyone else in our party to go here, and i was just so embarrassed that i made everyone waste their money and time on this place on our family vacation. Even from the little amount of food we all ended up eating, all of us woke up feeling a big "grumbly" the next morning. This is a sad waste of a good downtown location in an otherwise awesome town, and i would never go to this place again. read more

Food was fresh and crispy just different flavor profiles for common chinese dishes, I had the twice cooked pork and the sauce was a completely different flavor profile then any other twice cooked pork I have had in any restaurant. It is my favorite Chinese dish so i try it in any restaurant that has it. My wife had the szechuan chicken with again a completely different flavor profile from any Chinese dish either of us had ever. Neither tasted bad, just different. So if you are ordering don't give your taste buds a heads up on what they should be expecting. The Hot and Sour soup was really heavy on the Vinegar too. Simply Delicious and the best bargain in Durango - great service and extremely clean place!

My boyfriend and I stumbled across this place after getting out off of the silverton train. We were tired and looking for a good place to eat and decided we wanted to eat chinese food. We walked in and the atmosphere was nice and welcoming. Families, friends, and even people eating alone were enjoying their time. The waiters were nice and attended to us quickly. I really felt like they enjoyed their jobs, even towards the end of their operating hours. We ordered enough food for 5 people and we received our food quickly, they even asked us how hot we wanted our food! The vegetables are fresh in all of the dishes we had, even in the shrimp and rice soup the snow peas and the lettuce had a nice crisp to it. It was not over or undercooked but just perfect, nothing worse than soggy vegetables. I dont know what they do to their chicked but it is to die for, the rice is fluffy and they even bring out extra dishes for you to share. If you have time and are craving chinese food, this place is the place to go! read more

The owner is dedicated to serving excellent food in a clean and comfortable establishment. As in any restaurant, slight variations in the quality of the food is often due to the cooks on duty and the time of the week. We ordered take out from May Palace today, getting the Mongolian Beef and Royal Shrimp. The order came quickly and the waitstaff were efficient and professional. Unfortunately, the two dishes were absolutely awful. They were full of cheap fillers--water chestnuts and flower based sauce. The Royal Shrimp had four small shrimp and the Mongolian Beef had few strips of beef. Maybe people in Durango think this is normal, but it isn't. The food at May Palace is an embarrassment to Chinese cuisine. The owners seem to be more focused on profit maximization and not interested in serving authentic Chinese food. Good, solid menu with lots of Veg options and original recipes plus the (American Chinese food) classics. Lunch is $6.95 with a choice of soup, plus an eggroll, fried wonton and fried or white rice plus a generous helping of food. I tried the Szechuan Beef (3 out of 5 on the heat scale) and was just right. The zucchini and onions were a perfect pairing with the meat and it was gone pretty quickly. My friend had the Orange Chicken and again it was crispy saucy all at once. Service was fast and friendly. Our waitress asked if we wanted a soda and my friend got one and I declined, so she said, "You must be the designated driver." Lol ... she kept good watch over us and was very friendly. Although, my friend did not get his soda we did not care and when the bill came, it still had the soda on it. Again, don't care about $1.50 or so. SO we just gave the credit card and the cashier looked over at our table and said, "Hey, did you order a soda and not get it?", We replied yes, but its not important. They took it off the bill. Nice. Attention to detail. Good to know that they pay attention because they were preparing our food. Definite bargain and we will be back! Hands down the best place in Durango to get Chinese food! Everything on the lunch menu is delicious and worth a try. For $6.95 you get your entree, soup, fried rice, eggroll, wonton and fortune cookie! Such a great deal! I have eaten at May Palace over 100 times and have tried all kinds of dishes and have never been disappointed. The servers are fast and extremely friendly. If you like cocktails try the Flaming Volcano its a sweet drink served in a big volcano that is lit on fire! Its really fun, extremely good, and very very strong. I don't understand the high star rating. We ordered 2 dinners for take out. The garlic chicken was the worst I'd ever had, and I threw it away after 3 tablespoonfuls. Dark cubed chicken, overlooked celery, pasty bland sauce. The Kung Pao Bean Curd was flavorless lacked a vegetable variety. They must have needed to get rid of a lot of celery because it was in abundance. Spring rolls soggy and mushy, flavorless. Will Never return. read more
