I finally made it for a visit, and on Small Business Saturday no less! Before heading over, I called to check if they had what I was looking for--and they did. The person who answered was very helpful, which was a big plus. The entrance is on the side with the small parking lot. Once you walk in, the store seems to go on and on. They've got everything you could need for home improvement projects, even the smallest ones. The staff on the floor were friendly and knowledgeable--another big plus. I liked the idea of supporting a local business for what I needed instead of going to a big-box store. That said, you might pay a little more for some items. I'm also thinking of calling to see if they offer knife sharpening--another local hardware store I know does this. The inside is just what you'd expect from a hardware store: neat, tidy, and well-organized. Definitely worth a visit! It's very convenient to have a local store like Mayers in North Winton Village! You might not find everything you need and prices are higher than other stores like Home Depot and Lowe's etc BUT it's also very nice for not having to drive to Home Depot and Lowe's to save, well, time, effort, money and energy! I agree the employees are great. However, the owner wrongly denied me using my rewards discount twice. Once saying that my purchase items were on sale and excluded. They were not. I have always liked Mayer Paint & Hardware. From an extremely well stocked store to the most friendly group of sales people. Old school tradition lives on with Mayer's Paint & Hardware. I stopped by yesterday and in every aisle I walked in, someone asked if they could help me. The employees know what they're talking about, they have a pride in their job. NOT like many of today's sales people in big stores who have attitudes. There inventory is massive from tools to paint, to basic hardware needs.For the home owner, to the contractor, you name it, they have it, or will get it for you. Tom Thorpe, the paint manager and I were talking and he said: "We have so many products here, none of us know where everything else, but always one of us knows where something is. Dennis, the General Manager of Mayer's is a 16 year veteran with Mayer's. He keeps the machine running. He is very personable, good with customers and his employees. I bet Dennis knows where 99% of the inventory is, LOL. One sales person there by the name of "Jake" definitely is a proud employee. I was impressed when he was talking to me during this interview. He told me that Ace Hardware sends out corporate spies to check on stores, and sales people. They run the sales person through a series of questions and answers concerning products, their uses, etc. Jake passed with a 100% rating. Hats off to Jake on that one. From the management team, to the entire work force, everyone at Mayer's knows and practices good customer care. And on final note, while wrapping up this interview, there was a woman cashing out. Tom the paint manager opened the door and offered to carry her stuff to her car. You seldom see this type of courtesy anymore. 5 stars for Mayer Paint & Hardware. read more

I don't know what changed but Mayers sold me a universal flapper for a toilet and it wasn't universal. It didn't fit my toilet and they wouldn't take a return for credit even though I was buying a part that would allegedly work for my toilet. I have never had that experience at a hardware store. I have spent hundreds of dollars at Mayers but I will take my business elsewhere. I will never shop there again. read more

I love staying local. And I LOVE Mayer's. It might be pricey, but I definitely try to pick up hardware here when I need. It's a 30 minute drive to this location from my house. I have one closer, but Meyer in particular not only did they create a very nice BBQ section, but after swinging by to pick up my favorite Rockwood Charcoal, they have completely expanded the BBQ section, seriously, these guys have everything! Then add on top of that, the incredible service & respect that everyone employed there gives every single person that walks through the door. What an incredible place. If you can't find what you need anywhere else this place will have it. Having a house from the 1920s era most of what I need to fix/repair can't be found in the big stores - which are designed for post WW2 era homes. Highly recommend to anyone. read more

Every time I need some type of hardware or home improvement item, I immediately groan thinking of the drive out to Lowes or Home Depot...then I slam on the brakes and remember Mayer which is right down the street. Why drive to the burbs and deal with massive parking lots and impersonal salespeople? They have anything and everything here that that average person would need in a hardware store without the behemoth numbered aisles and the endless choices. You walk in and the smell of popcorn greets you, right before one of their helpful employees appears out of nowhere. Seriously everyone that works there is so friendly and knowledgeable. I especially appreciate how diverse the staff is, representing all different ages and backgrounds. Their hours aren't as flexible as the box stores are, but I will always choose to come here first. One of the friendliest businesses I have visited. I entered the store, looking entirely lost as I didn't see any signs as to where the key cutting area was. One of the employees immediately asked me what I needed and directed me to the back of the store. The store was unexpectedly large and seemed to be well stocked. This is the friendliest little store you'll ever find. And I don't mean to be negative in saying little. It's small in a good way and the selection and inventory is quite surprising. Yes, it's not Home Depot or Lowes but I'm quite frankly amazed at what you'll find here and the advice you'll get. Contractors from all over the area recommend Mayer when it comes to paint. I've done an extensive amount of remodeling over the past several years and in my work, I refer a lot of people to contractors, suppliers, etc. When you ask people about paint, the bigger names like Hadlocks comes to mind and yes, they do a nice job, but the gnelteman who runs the paint department at Mayer is the one they'll always tell you to go to when you have an issue or a real question. He is solution oriented and won't oversell you. Nobody is more knowledgeable and helpful. That's why you see a constant stream of business coming into this place. And it's not just from the neighborhood. I drive 20 minutes right past Home Depot to get there and I'll do it every time. I had to go yesterday to pick up some stain and seeking a solution to bust some really stuck lug nuts on my zero-turn mower blades. I was all set to pay $120+ for an impact wrench and they would have been more than happy to sell it to me but instead, they suggested an $8 alternative which was a 3' length of iron pipe to provide the leverage I needed to bust those nuts open. It worked, and as a consequence dinner with friends that evening was essentially free. And by the way, they always have free popcorn and coffee. Try finding that at Home Depot or Lowes! read more

I find it truly amazing that this store has everything you might ever need and more. It's like shopping on Amazon, but with friendly, knowledgeable staff. And free popcorn besides. Before I had ever been to Mayer's, I always had the perception that small, local hardware stores were never worth going to because they are pricey. I'm happy to say that Mayer's has changed my mind. The few times I've been here, I always feel overwhelmed because there seems to be so much stuff in a rather small-ish space. But! I am always greeted rather quickly with someone asking me what they can help me find. Customer service for the win! My family has been going to this hardware store my whole life. It's always very easy to find someone to help me, and they are experts in answering any question I have ever had. When my license plate came loose from its plastic frame, a store clerk showed me how to disassemble the frame and drill pilot holes for the new screws, which he then helped me find in the correct type and size. He spent 20 minutes with me for a 60 cent purchase. They also have a great variety of products, including some things I have purchased for my gardening business that I have not seen in any other stores. There is a good range from cheap and simple to professional grade. My only complaint is that I wish they were open a little later on the weekends. I hate having to go to Home Depot when I break a tool or run out of grass seed (or whatever) on a saturday or sunday afternoon. read more

This place is a great local hardware store. They can answer questions, have a great stock with variety better than the big box stores. The prices are decent and the staff is knowledgeable. The variety is superb. Unfortunately, if you need 17,000 boxes of 1" long drywall screws, you need to go elsewhere (grin). But, they always have the things that the other stores do not. Some examples, lamps and electrical parts, o-rings, a veritable candy store of hardware and fasteners. Great tool selection and a whole half of the store dedicated to paints, adhesives, etc. This is a perfect local hardware store for of all your "regular needs". The only thing you don't see here is lots of large raw materials and larger retailing (4x8 drywall, lumber, snowblowers, etc.), otherwise all that you need is here. 6/6/13 - They updated this place within the last few months and it is still a great place. I went in there the other day to find some m4 bolts for my car repair. They are all super helpful. The update has their tools all set up on sliding shelves and packs more into a small space.
