If the bar for a restaurant is whether it accurately represents the culture it advertises, this one was a win. I visited Israel for the first time last year, and the atmosphere here was dead on, from the small child sweeping up out front, to the rather chatty sales pitch I got when I walked in, to the cuisine itself. I will say that I was a bit miffed that I thought from that conversation that I would be getting a hummus with falafel but I ended up with some pickled vegetables that I didn't really want. Nonetheless, the creaminess of the hummus, the parsley flavor that came out of my very green falafel, and the strong tahini note at the end were all winners. Having paid for an extra pita I was glad as it was just enough to get it all without a spoon. I also got a cake which was a thin wafer with a coffee-flavored icing and again a very nutty tahini flavor. I'd come back just for that. I was sad when the previous hummus place in downtown Charleston closed; the region could use something of this nature. And they appear to have a successful restaurant. read more

Mazal was recommended by a family member but I can't share their enthusiasm. I got the ground beef "kebab", seasoned fries, and chickpeas (with hummus). I opted for delivery since the restaurant was right around the corner from where I was staying (approx .5 mi.) The "kebab" was supposed to come with a pita. It did not. The meat was dry, overcooked (bordering on burnt) ground beef served over bland, watery hummus in a bowl. This defied any previous kebab experience I have ever had in terms of both taste and appearance. The beef had an unpleasant, smoky taste. The chickpeas hummus looked plain, watery and unappealing. A tasting did not contradict the visual impression in any way. The seasoned fries were lacking in flavor, and quite cold, but inoffensive relative to the quality of the other two selections. Overall, very disappointing. And to boot, I had some stomach discomfort the next day, although I won't definitively place the blame on the food. To be clear, I hate leaving negative reviews, especially for small businesses. Mazal has a sizable majority of very good to excellent reviews so maybe I just caught them on a bad night. However, my experience would make the idea of giving them another chance something I'd be unlikely to pursue, especially for the price. read more

An awesome new Middle Eastern restaurant; a welcome experience on this end of West Ashley. My pita was totally different than expected and for the better! It was a packed pocket with a side of fries. They have a small selection of exotic sodas and drinks as well. The ordering location is kind of weird. The restaurant gives off a table service vibe, but it's a buzzer and pickup at the cooking location kind of deal. Regardless, it wasn't a big hinderance to my experience. The staff was very welcoming and came to our table to ask if we enjoyed our food. Everything was worth it. Definitely check it out. read more

I happened upon this business on my recent visit to Charleston. It was fairly random that I ended up eating here, and now it is a place I would go out of my way to try again and again. The prices were a little higher than I anticipated, however, the flavor and authenticity of the food is worth every penny. We ordered the humus (classic), falafel on a pita, and seasoned fries. This food was shared among three people and we all left feeling full. You order your food at the register, and then you can specify what toppings you want in your entree. I told the person behind the counter I was vegan. He said he was vegan as well and took care of filling my falafel with all the best plant-based toppings. I took my first bite of falafel and felt transported back to Israel. I have not had falafel this authentic in the US till now. I almost shed a tear as the last time I had a falafel pita like what Mazal served was when my dad was alive in 2013. It is amazing the power food has, and each bite of my food at Mazal made me feel like my dad was with me again. For specifics on the quality of Mazal's falafel, it is light, airy, and delicate. It tastes like you are biting into a cloud. There is no grittiness, there is no tough exterior, and it is not dense. The interior is a yellow-green color while the outside is a golden brown. It does not crumble to pieces. It holds its form as you take each delectable bite. The hummus, again, was exactly like what I ate in Israel. It was thick and creamy. You could taste that they use high quality tahini and there again was no grittiness. I loved the chickpeas and olive oil on top. This is something that is commonly prepared in Israel yet so hard to find in the states. I literally licked the hummus bowl clean. Finally, the fries were very nicely seasoned while not going overboard. My picky 2-year-old enjoyed the fries which says a lot! The atmosphere at Mazal is also something to note. I love how spaced out the tables are. I could eat there with my sometimes loud 2-year-old without disturbing other customers. I could also see this being a good spot for a date night or catching up with friends as each table offered a lot of privacy. For those bringing kids, I also want to note there was a changing table in the bathroom which held the weight of my toddler easily. I truly thank the owners and chef at Mazal for an unforgettable experience. I wish this business much luck and hope to visit them again on my next trip to Charleston. read more

New place, Israeli street food! This is something I have been waiting for in West Ashley for 20 years! Watch your step walking in, place the order at the register and continue down the counter to personalize the toppings. Tahini, baba ghanoush, humus, pickled veggies, mayo based red cabbage salad, vinegar based green cabbage salad. Pita was hot and fresh, chicken shawarma was sliced just for my pita, pickled veggies were pretty addicting! Love supporting delicious local restaurants. Love supporting Israeli businesses, love that food was lovingly prepared by the manager wearing a cross, and enjoyed by women wearing hijabs, as well as other people of color and those more secular, everyone just eating yummy food. Seating area was clean, new, and spacious with both cushioned booths and tables with chairs. There is also an upstairs for larger groups and an event room. read more

I ordered the grounded beef and lamb and tasted good but there was nothing special about the flavor. The fries were really good. We also ordered the falafel plate. I will say, I tried them at Cava and loved them so I was really excited to try them at an authentic place. They did not taste as good. I didn't even finish them. The portions were not as big as the pictures showed. I didn't think the process reflected the food. I love going to try new places and the ambiance is great, I just didn't leave impressed. We popped in for lunch and it was busy but not crowded. We were able to order quickly at the counter. The staff was helpful and really friendly. It's of a self serve vibe. We had the gyro and the falafel plate. The food was fresh and tasty. The overall experience was solid. I would definitely say try it. Will we go back? Can't say it's on the list to go back with so many other options. One other part that was a bit odd was the Costco bottles of sparkling water for $3.00. The case is $17.99 for 24 @ Costco. So I honestly want to leave 1 star for the food and initial service but I feel bad doing that especially since this is a new restaurant, so...2 more stars for how nice the guy was who prepared my food! He was young and seemed to really care and be excited for me to try it. When I came in, no one greeted me...which neverrrr bothers me anywhere, even in the nicest restaurants. But it was very awkward walking in and not exactly knowing how this works, no one's at the door, and there was only one table sitting in the whole restaurant (they know they're new and many people are first time customers...acknowledgement goes a long way)...do I get seated by someone? Walk up and order first, then sit? Across the room, there's clearly a sign above the register that says "Order here" so I walk over and am standing up against the counter while two employees have an open (somewhat tense and dry) conversation about a to go order...one was on the phone dealing with the order, asking the other employee questions...still neither even cracked a smile or said hello or eluded to "give us just one moment and we will be with you!" I rarely feel awkward or "unwelcome" anywhere. I work F&B so I understand all the back end things that go on that patrons often times aren't privy to, when, as a server you're internally freaking out because you gotta keep a straight face while things are crashing and burning somewhere. So I always give benefit of the doubt and you have no idea what's going on in someone's day/life. But I literally stood there for like 2 minutes without either of them saying a word...so long that I started just playing with things to look busy and kind of walking around. Finally the one employee got off the phone and the other walked away...I never got a "Hello! So sorry that took a moment!"...so after I asked about a few dishes, it was clear the girl at the register really didn't care. I asked if I could try one of the things from their prep bar area (that you could easily see standing there) and she told me "Uhm...you can ask them..." ...lol okay. Heads up...that's not a proper reply to a new patron at your new restaurant. So I did just that and the guy making my meal was very kind and let me try a few little things with enthusiasm. I ordered the hummus plate with Shwarma. It's actually turkey which is fine and I was aware of when ordering but...lame. I know turkey is lean but the point of Shwarma is that it's usually bursting with flavor, juicy, tender, and never overcooked! This meat was the total opposite. The pieces were chopped SO TINY, it felt like a garnish. You get one piece of pita for a huge bowl of hummus, and they forgot mine. Annoying but not a deal breaker, mistakes happen. I got it to go and I should've checked my whole order before leaving. But the girl taking my order said I would probably need two pitas...which isn't a big deal except that means they are very aware it isn't enough for most people, which feels cheap when it's..bread. Anyway, the ENTIRE plate/bowl was literally just a sh**load of hummus with the dryest, most mediocre, tasteless meat I've ever had in any Mediterranean setting. And the little pickled veggies you get is a tiny amount! No garnish, no crunch, no big flavor, no colors on the dish. Honestly speaking, the pickled veggies was the best part. I feel bad even saying this but after getting home and trying to enjoy it, I ended up eating two day old leftovers in my fridge! My boyfriend who is SO low maintenance and easily pleased in the culinary department was even like "this is whack. I hope it was cheap." Together, we didn't even finish any of it, it was all so mehh. I opened up my Trader Joe's hummus, embarrassingly! Lastly, I am never shy to pay good money for a yummy meal...fast food, to go food, smaller portions or not. I appreciate every step that goes in to a restuarant and kitchen and cuisine, from the tiniest details. But this meal was outrageous for what it was!! Esp leaving so much to be desired. You gotta do more, better, unique whatever if you're gonna make it in this foodie town. Too much competition. It's not hard to make things flavorful, have more sauce, juicier meat, friendly staff, all the above. I have felt guilty about spending that and ripped off every time I think of it. First of all the staff were very friendly. I ordered the classic hummus and a shawarma pita. The hummus is absolutely amazing. Smooth, creamy, fresh. Great taste. The pitas are also excellent. They're soft, fresh, fluffy. They definitely bake them in house. The shawarma was meh. The chicken tasted decent but it was thick cut and dry. I'm also not sure how fresh it was? They say on their website that it's cooked on a vertical spit but I could see in the kitchen that it came from the grill. Perhaps it was originally in the spit and then they warmed it up on the grill? I'm not sure - in their defense I did order 20 minutes before they closed but regardless of the circumstances it should be better. I'll return but I'll get a different protein next time. We loved Mazal! We enjoyed the food so much, sorry no pictures as we inhaled the food. We had shawarma, in a bowl and in a pita - which is turkey, we had the crispy schnitzel in a bowl (chicken) and in a pita, ( there were 4 of us) we had a big bowl of hummus and pita and falafel. Everything was so delicious we didn't speak to each other! The way it works is it is " self serve" menu on the electronic board, You select your food. The cooks (behind) in the kitchen, do guide you a bit, as does a hostess. (she was very helpful and kind to a person like me who isn't a quick study!) You choose soft drinks from a cold case, and they have water, cups etc. After you select and pay for your food, you seat yourself (lots of booths) and a server brings the food. Another person cleans/bus the tables. There are containers and bags if you want to take it home. I'd like to become a 'regular' - next time I want the smash - which is beef and lamb, and the grilled chicken. There were a ton of salads and appetizers. There were several, yummy looking dessert selections and the French Fries were fantastic and there were so many more items to choose from but we were so stuffed we did not have room! My advice? RUN TO MAZAL. YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED! read more

I was super excited to try this new business in West Ashley and it had been on our radar for about a month. The service was great! Very welcoming staff. The ambiance was nice, it felt very-family friendly and accommodating for take-out orders. I was disappointed in the overall quality of the food for the price. We got the Shawarma Pita, Shnitzel Pita, and an order of Falaffel (bc it's customary to do so at a Med restaurant!), which costed about $60 with a tip. The falaffel was overly seasoned and overly dry... it was unfortunately inedible. My shawarma was not seasoned enough, half of it was fat, and their sauces were just fine, so nothing enhanced that experience. The actual pita was delicious though, so I picked at that. The shnitzel pita was the only thing we ordered that we were both impressed by. Might be worth trying for some but if you're looking for a better Med spot, there's a few in West Ashley that are more affordable with better quality. read more
