I was really excited to try this spot, as I've seen it rated as the best middle eastern restaurant in Savannah in some lists. I got the spicy lamb gyro, which was about $10. The flavor and char on the meat was great, but the gyro was much smaller than I'd anticipated for the price. I was little confused when the white sauce that came on the gyro turned out to be ranch, which I'd noticed large jugs of sitting in the deli area. I'd paid for an extra side of sauce to go, which again, I had assumed would be a garlic sauce/toum/something different since it was listed as "special sauce". This turned out to be ranch, too. The service was fine, and the tiny waiting area has lots of jars and packages of halal grocery items, which is pretty cool. I'd like to go back and try some of the platters to see if they were more substantial. read more

Very delightful people who make great food! This spot is perfect if you're looking for authentic and compared to the area the food is pretty cheap. I got the spicy lamb gyro, my husband got the falafel wrap, and we had the most delicious little pastry for dessert. We will absolutely be going back. read more

I recently had the pleasure of stopping into Al Salaam deli. This was my very first time, as I have heard great things about this place the entire seven years that I have lived in Savannah, but just never got a chance to stop in. Instantly when we walked in the door, you can tell that this place has been around for a very long time. It could possibly use an upkeep, but overall the customer service is what really draws you in. The gentleman behind the counter was super friendly, answered any questions that we had and our food was made really quickly. You can tell a lot of people from the neighborhood come in because while we were there, there were several people who stopped in to show off their new children or ask them how they were doing. The lamb Gyro that I got was probably one of the best I've had in a very long time. As a New Yorker, I was thoroughly impressed and I cannot wait to come back and try something else on the menu. read more

Savannah has plenty of hoity-toity places, but this is a small, spartan shop on the edge of town which offers the real deal for Middle Eastern cuisine. They were also open on Christmas. Ordering a falafel wrap got me a nice mix of flavors and textures with creamy sauce and some fresh vegetables, as well as a small helping of spiced fries. That's about what you can expect from this place, but it's a niche worth filling in this town and I was happy to have found it. read more

This is exactly my kind of place! It looks like a cozy corner store and the service is quick. For $12 you can get a wrap, fries, and canned soda. Great value and great food. I was pretty wowed by how well-spiced the lamb was on the gyro - pretty much all lamb is good to me, but this was special. From the outside Al Salaam might not look like much, but let me tell you there is SOO much more than what meets the eyes. Al salaam so far is the best gyro I've had in Savannah!! The flatbread is so moist and good. The lamb itself is so tender and seasoned amazingly! The tzatziki sauce is also very good. The only problem I have with Al Salaam is its lay out, it's a very small space so if you're going during a lunch rush you might have to wait for a little while and it gets kinda packed, besides that it's amazing!! My hometown of Montreal has an abundance of Lebanese and middle eastern restaurants. Any type of restaurant for that matter. One of the things I definitely miss about Montreal is the food! When I moved to Savannah, I was browsing Yelp, compiling my hit list and came across Al Salaam Deli (ASD) and bookmarked it because It seemed to be one of the very few in its category. It was my usual, weekly date with my Brunch Squad and I suggested ASD. It is located in a neighborhood and from the outside, you will see a red awning, with the windows dressed in simple signs that say "Gyro", "Hummus" and "Deli" and the restaurant name. It almost looks like an old school convenience store. What lies behind those doors is such a charming little place. The kind that makes my heart sing and makes me so happy to have found it! Parking: Street parking. What I ate/drank - I shared the following with my Little One: Babaganoush - Oh my! It was so smooth and tasty. It is a generous portion, served in a clear, plastic to-go container and the way they place it in there is just so pretty (refer to pic)! There is a dollop of chili (?) in the center, drizzled with olive oil that collects in the pockets of the babaganoush that form in the pattern. Served with sections of pita bread, this was a great starter to our meal. Chicken Gyro Combo - Combo just means with fries. The Gyro contained generous pieces of scrumptious, marinated cubes of chicken, with shredded iceberg lettuce and a garlic sauce. It was so big, the two ends of the pita barely touched. It comes wrapped in foil to help you keep it together. The fries were the generic, average-sized fries, but were cooked nice and crisp with the right balance of cooked potato in the inside. Baklava - How could I resist? They sit right by the cash when ordering. Although, probably over the top, it completed the meal and experience. It was flaky, nutty, sweet, all the elements that a baklava should have. It was delicious! Vibe - Just a warning. It's small. If you have personal space issues, best you take it to go. When you walk in, you will probably take about a total of 10 steps inside. To the left is the open kitchen with the cash separating it from the dining area. The place has been packed tightly with supplies and things that all have its place. In front of you are shelves stocked with Middle Eastern products. To the right is the dining area and I mean, a total of 4 tables. Whole issues of National Geographic magazines are nailed to the wall, arranged neatly and serve as wallpaper. There are 2 benches lining the walls with velvet seat cushions in burgundy and contrasting yellow pillow cushions. Kid-Friendly - They don't have a Kids menu, but I shared all of the above items with my Little One. Service - The service is what makes this place extra special. The owners were just so nice and so welcoming. It really is like walking into a neighbor's house. We came in just before the lunch rush and placed our order at the cash. They told us to have a seat and called us when the order was ready. At the end, when I was paying for my order, I asked if they had coffee to purchase and explained that I always needed fuel for the drive back due to the usual food coma. He told me they didn't have any, but offered the coffee they normally make for themselves and even went out of his way to get a to-go cup and lid. He even made my coffee with milk and sugar and made sure I liked it and he didn't even charge me for it after I insisted. He also made sure our leftover food was packed well for the road. They were both so thoughtful and sincere. Lucky people who live right by ASD! I would be making weekly visits if I were them, which I'm sure they probably do. After the first time coming here I had made up my mind on giving these guys 4 stars. Food is great but I was kind of skewed for the limited amount of seating and ease of accessibility. However after eating it another time (that same week) I had to change my mind. I can look past the seating situation simply because these guys are that awesome. Their culture runs so deep and they keep it alive. They stick to traditions and it shows in their food. The gyros are to die for. Easily the best in Savannah by far. It's one of those foods that the second you get done eating, no matter how full you are, you immediately want more. In fact I want one just thinking about it. Seriously they are delicious and everyone here is very friendly and kind. Like I said earlier, the only downfall is the limited seating and tight seating. But I've learned to almost appreciate it bc it draws you closer to who you're with and those around you. Everyone's there for the same reason either way right?? Great Lamb Gyro filled with plenty of lamb, onions, lettuce and their sauce. It was the appropriate amount of messy! I was adventurous and also ordered a side of Falafel as I've never had it before. Their Falafel is ground chickpeas with spices, rolled bite size and fried. I loved the cumin flavor, crunchy outside and moist flavorful inside. Small, quaint, with counter service at this mid eastern restaurant. While waiting you can entertain yourself with the many National Geographic magazines that decorate their walls. This humble no frills spot was bussssyy today and there was one man working hard so I've got plenty of grace that our order was wrong. We got 2 wraps both which were wrong but we devoured them anyways lol. The chicken curry "spicy" was extremelllyyy mild- hardly no curry flavor or spiciness at all. We thought maybe we were given just chicken gyro wraps instead but not positive. Good fresh veg inside and meat was well cooked. Side hummus was served in a styrofoam container that spilled alllllll over our bag and us, so I would recommend that packaging note esp for take out orders. Hummus was amazing and pita was delicious! After placing my order, I discovered why. Several customers eating and/or waiting had no problem expressing their political views LOUDLY and PROUDLY in this small space in a predominantly NON MAGA location. It was abundantly apparent this was not their first meal there, NOR was it their first time feeling free to express their thoughts. at this location. Very casual and intimate place. You can tell that the family who owns and runs this restaurant is more than excited to share their cuisine with anyone who walks through those doors. I do believe it was the owner and his wife inside the restaurant when I was dining and the owner was very attentive in making sure that I and my friend were both comfortable while we stayed and dined. The food was the best I've ever had and had that whole personal charm of someone making it for you and not the generic 'Middle East' or 'Mediterranean' taste you get from other restaurants that are chains.
