We went there on a Friday evening, and the place was fairly empty. I wonder why. Well, nothing was exceptional. The service was decent and fast. The place was clean but dated with "cool" murals on the wall. The three stars are for the food which was bland with not much flavor, and the price definitely did not reflect that. This Mazatlan location lives on my list of Mexican restaurants in my rotation. Most Mexican food is all the same. You get the same slop and plop just from different locals and atmospheres. This Mazatlan has friendly staff, a good vibe and the food is consistent. I haven't had one bad experience here. I've only been to a couple of Mexican places that really stood above the rest but even though Mazatlan hovers around the mediocre zone, it's still better than a whole lot of other places. One thing I wish all Mexican restaurants would do is diversify their beer selection. I'm always a bit disappointed when all they have is Mexican or domestic beers. If you want good quality Mexican food in Tacoma, I'd recommend this Mazatlan all day. Stay away from the Pacific Ave location. Update! Yes the menu has updated (prices at all restaurants) still loving my favorite Chicken Mole but hmmm. The rice seems a bit different and the flavor totally jumped out at me. The refried beans, which I usually avoid were even great. So happy I tried them again. We also tried a cheese quesadilla (very big!) with lots of sour cream and the Chicken Crema (the SO inhaled it, the rice and beans). We so wanted to try a desert but as you will see from my pics the portions seem to have increased and the plates are bigger than our last visit. I hadn't been here in probably 15 to 20 years. When I used to work nearby I went here for lunch frequently. The interior is gorgeous and much more decorated than i recalled it was in the past - many pretty colors and beautiful carved wood. Not a spec of dust, extremely clean restaurant. Service was great. However, the food really missed the mark. Overall, food was bland and lacked any spices. Enchilada sauce was like a watery tomato sauce. Refried beans runny. Even the chips and salsa were disappointing. Prices were considerably higher compared to neighboring Mexican restaurants. I won't be back. read more

My buddy and I came here last night for just drinks. I don't know what it is -- something about the South like the Lakewood/Tacoma area has very good Mexican food...and drinks! I raved about this to my buddy too! We sat at the small bar and the tables are marked clearly where you can sit. It's been such a longgggg time since I've been to Mazatlan. This establishment though is the BEST! They have such pretty artwork and colors on the wall. We were served by Blanca -- the bartender and also server! Blanca, if you're reading this, thank you for being so friendly to us! You are a WHIZ with drinks! This wonderful woman can make you a coconut mojito and it's just right -- right blend of alcohol and coconut with mint leaves and a lime wedge. She then made me a strawberry daiquiri -- I'm telling you -- I could have both drinks again and again :D It is really that GOOD! The people here are friendly and Blanca will treat you well, no doubt. Definitely will come back again for the food some day and of course, drinks ;) They have a bean dip with the chips that is pretty good! Sat at a booth in the bar and the bartender was so exuberant, friendly and clearly enjoys his job. We ordered the wings (they were great) and some queso from the happy hour menu. Came in after the movies (F9)! We tried three places ... and no one had A/C!! Nope walked back out! Here it's cool but still a bit warm in here. I've eaten here several times over a very long period of time. My wife and I stopped in here this week for dinner. Keeping in mind that we're amid the COVID crisis, so there's some understanding that most places are just trying to figure out how to navigate the waters. Upon our arrival it was apparent that the place was rather empty. Aside from one person in the bar and the Doordash driver that walked in just in front of us, there were no other customers in sight. We waited for a brief moment before a hostess came out of the back to seat us. This hostess turned out to be our server as well. She was rather young and seemed a bit lost, but I was willing to cut her some slack. I ordered an iced tea and my wife ordered her typical "Sprite, 7-Up, Sierra Mist, whatever clear soda you have". The server returned with a Sprite for my wife and a 7-Up for me. Hmm.... For dinner I ordered the Mazatlan Molcajete, the two of us would split it. I also ordered the guacamole app because the wife loves a good guac. The guac was okay, nothing special, a little on the bland side. But it's guac and we're okay with that. The Molcajete had very little actual meat in it, comprised mostly of onions and peppers. It was also extremely greasy, to the point of almost looking like a soup there was so much grease in the bottom of the molcajete (for those that don't know, "molcajete" actually refers to the stone dish, not the actual food). So all in all, the food experience here was not that great. And to top it off, my wife lost her appetite when she found a very small ant-looking bug walking across her plate. We're pretty sure it was not in the Molcajete because it was not covered in grease. Regardless, not a fan of bugs in my Mexican restaurants! The staff seemed to be hiding in the back, so whatever they were doing back there was certainly more interesting than taking care of us. As literally the ONLY diners in their establishment, it took FAR too long to finally get our bill so we could leave. All in all, I think it'll be a while before I try this place again. read more

Great service and the food was good too! Plenty of options for all diets. I went Friday night and it was pretty busy but it didn't lower the quality of service. The seats have been reupholstered and the place is a lot cleaner and the food is better, the new manager was very friendly and kind too! My husband and I just returned from our first visit to the Lakewood Mazatlan restaurant. The worst service. We were the only ones in the restaurant. The waiter rushed us to order. We arrived there at 7:00pm, not sure why he wanted to order so fast. Then he came by every 7 minutes or so to ask if everything was good. On the sixth time around I asked for a take out box so I could finish my food at home. Simply the weirdest behavior. I told him to bring the check because it was clear you don't want us here. My family has frequented this restaurant for many years. My understanding is they have updated the building and made some staff changes. We got the chicken taquitos and then left because I was afraid to try other stuff after reading the reviews lol The chicken taquitos weren't bad, they gave good portions of guacamole and sour cream. Our server was pretty attentive and our waters were refilled quickly which I loved. The tortilla chips were meh and I did not like how watery their salsa was.
