I had to bring my 90-year-old mother-in-law in for an annual check-up. She is wheelchair bound. The services received by Dr. McAlear AND the front desk staff were amazing. The first thing I noticed ... the door was already open before we got to it to help me roll her in, and the wait was very short. Dr. McAlear came out first to talk to us briefly about what would be most comfortable for my MIL during the exam. She stayed in her transport chair throughout, so he had to actually move this exam chair in the room to make room for her transport chair. His exam was thorough, and he spoke clearly and slowly so my MIL could understand him. She felt very respected. They all did everything they could to make it a positive experience for both her and me. I would definitely recommend him!! read more

I have been going to see Dr McAlear for many years now. HIs visits are never a disappointment. I leave his office after each visit thoroughly satisfied with the services that he and his co-workers provide. Dr McAlear goes above and beyond to help his patients. 2 examples: Last summer I had a tick bite which resulted in my having double vision in my left eye. Dr McAlear took the time to research how he could not only assist me but also explained to me that the issue would resolve in time. Secondly, my insurance would not approve the medication I need for dry eye. Dr McAlear took the time to write to the insurance company explaining my vision needs and I was approved!! My family is so grateful for Dr. Tom. My mother has ALS, which makes it very hard for her to go places, never mind a full optometrist appointment, which she was way over due for. She needed new glasses badly. I'm her son, visiting from out of town for a few days, so I called on a Friday morning and they got us in by 2pm that day. Dr. Tom and his staff were so accommodating. The office is wheelchair accessible, which is important to us. And Dr. Tom adjusted all of the equipment so that my Mom didn't even have to get out of her wheelchair. We then picked out a great pair of light weight glasses that she can wear all the time. Dr. Tom was incredible! Plus the price of the appointment and the glasses was very reasonable. Now here's some wonderful service... My parents live at Lindon Ponds in Hingham and Dr. Tom is personally going to be delivering the glasses to their apartment and making sure they are properly adjusted for my Mom. Very disappointed now. I had been going here for MANY years. Last year before quarantine I had my eye exam completed with contact fitting. I went back a week later because I couldn't see like my previous prescription I wore 2 weeks before the visit. Was told I should go to a primary care because I must have an underlying condition. Ok done. Then we went to quarantine. I didn't feel comfortable going out and stopped back in in July to see if I could get my prescription changed. Was told there was nothing they could do. I ended up ordering one box of each on my insurance on December 31 (why not it was $100 I would not have used). Still couldn't see. Stopped in today to get a copy of my prescription to at least get glasses. Their prescriptions for glasses used to be 2 years, now they dropped it to one year which is the minimum legally they can have it. I will not be going back. read more

Amazing experience!! My husband got a piece of metal in his eye at work and was having a lot of pain. I called them and they immediately took us in to be seen. The doctor was AMAZING. Very reassuring, explained everything, and super nice. We were in and out of there in about 20 minutes and my husband feeling like a new person with no more pain in his eye. He scheduled him for a follow up in a few days to make sure everything looks okay. He is very professional and I would 100% recommend him to anyone I know! I have a very high myopic prescription and Dr McAlear was tremendously helpful in getting it done right. He is also knowledgeable in other eye diseases and has made referrals for me to Retina Specialists as well as Cataract specialist. He is patient and takes the time you need to get an accurate prescription. His staff is also patient and helpful when picking out stylish frames that compliment you appearance. Had a fabulous appt. w/ Dr. Tom, turned out it wasn't that my distance vision was poor it was my chronic dry eye causing my eyes to fuzz up. Due to my age maybe a little tweak needed to the script but maybe a eye washing regiment to assist with my chronic dry eye, more drops more routinely will help me have a better experience with my distance vision. Sadly, my PCP will not refer me medically outside their referral circles and I cannot go back if it is for medical conditions vs. routine eye care but I must give Dr. Tom and his staff high marks for taking really good care of me and not just writing a stronger script without explaining to me it was my condition causing me more issues and to help myself get healthy but taking extra care of my eyes... They did a decent job with my eye exam, Dr was nice and knowledgeable. I had heard from a family member that the receptionist was not pleasant to deal with- I found her neither pleasant or unpleasant. Had exam, and a contact fitting ($75). I wasn't happy with comfort of my old contacts. Took home a trial that was comfortable, but my vision was poor in them- I had found they gave off a weird glare. Called the office to inform them that I would need a new trial, as this lens did not work for me. I was told that the doctor had COVID and I could not get a new trial until I came in for a re-fitting. Well I will be out of contacts by the time of the appointment (11 days was soonest, she had suggested 18 days at first). Later I called and asked if I could get my records as I would need to be seen by someone else (at my expense), as they provided absolutely no options for me (other than not being able to see for 2-3 weeks). I then I realized I could use my old lens until appointment if they gave me a renewal on my old script. Then, I could purchase 30 days to get me through until appointment. Or maybe they could give me a trial of my current lens. They would not give me a renewal or trial of my current contacts. I then asked if there was a doctor that they had a working relationship with they could refer me to- the answer was no. So basically if you use this practice and anything makes the doctor unavailable you are out of luck and it will cost you $$ to see someone else. Oh and I almost forgot- the receptionist hung up on me when I expressed my displeasure with the situation and the lack of solutions. Telling me it's a global pandemic and there was nothing she could do. Well, seeing we are in a global pandemic, I would think a solo doctor would have a contingency plan for his patients in the event he caught the virus. I do hope the doctor recovers quickly. I also think they probably should of inform the patients that were with him (in close contact for a period of time) of his positive status- I happened to call, which is how are found out. Tonight I am still flabbergasted at how I was treated. From the moment I called the receptionist gave me a "don't bother me", "it's not my problem" attitude. She offered no solutions and was only annoyed by the solutions I suggested. Funny thing is I posted a review on another site and the doctor IMMEDIATELY contacted staff and responded (defensively and tried to put the blame on me). Apparently a public review is a bigger priority than a patient caught in a bind. I wasn't asking for the moon. There was someone in the office who could have easily offered me trial of my old contacts to tide me over until appointment. Clearly the doctor was well enough to have a lengthy response and conversation with his staff about my review- it literally would not have been much trouble at all to get taken care of (either with renewal or trial of my current prescription). Most eye places have staff competent enough to handle these types of issues independently - definitely not this place!! read more

Buyer Beware! I brought an RX here to have glasses made. I thought they had a nice selection of frames. I have never met Dr. McAlear, I was only in the optical shop for a pair of new frames. Unfortunately, this optical shop/lab made my lenses incorrectly 3 times. Which I suppose can happen? Each time I returned with my $600.00 defected glasses, the receptionist acted as if I was doing this just to aggravate her. They have a "no refund policy" which I found out after they made them incorrectly the second time. After the third time, I went back to be refunded, Dr. McAlear was not there, and I was asked to come back the next week. Dr. McAlear, the man I've never met or spoke to sent a certified letter to my home telling me "if I attempted to call or come back to his place of business he would involve the police and/or his attorney for trespassing". I'm just speechless that this "professional" man would do something so demeaning, when it's clearly their blunder. I don't know how many times they can make lenses incorrectly, and not be held responsible. All he had to do is talk to me, and get this matter fixed one way or another. As I type this review I'm still in disbelief, I find it hard to believe this place is in business. read more

I got pair of prescription sunglasses here and they were broken in less than a year. I went to get them fixed and was told they couldn't replace them or fix them, but they'd sell me new ones at a discount. I don't want a discount, I want a product that works the first time. 0/10, wont be going back. Eyeglasses are too expensive for mistakes like this one. If the product will be flimsy I might as well buy it elsewhere for less money. read more

Absolutely the best experience I've had with a doctors office from start to finish. I had an eye emergency while home visiting family and Dr. Tom and his extremely friendly staff made room in their schedule for me right away. When I called, I was able to talk to a real person, not an automated service so that was fantastic. Dr. Tom was awesome - super nice and easy going and explained everything so I knew what to expect. He even checked on me each day over the holiday weekend and made sure to see me before I headed back to TN. My 11-year-old daughter did NOT want to get her eyes checked. She struggles with anxiety in pretty much any doctor-related setting, and she wasn't a fan of the ophthalmologist we'd been seeing for the past few years. Very disappointed with my experience at McAlear Eye Care. I setup an appointment and wanted to discuss various progressive lenses. The office manager become very defensive and told me I had to use a particular Progressive manufactured by my insurance company. When I told her that was not so she started to lecture me. I let it go and figured I would discuss it with the doctor . Yesterday i showed up for my appointment and the woman who was the office Manager again was very aggressive and short with me. The doctor then called me into his office and called me Steve which is not my name, he than asked me what my issue was. I was taken back and explained what happened and that my insurance company confirmed that I could discuss and choose my lenses. Dr. McAlear then informed me that he was sorry that they could not meet my expectations. This ended and I left. I then read that doctors get a higher reimbursement on the lenses they insisted I had to use. I made an appointment today with another provider and they stated I could choose whatever lenses I wanted. McAlear Eye care needs to understand that customer service and listening to the PAYING customer is important. read more

I was greeted immediately upon entering the office and completed documentation for a new patient. The process was painless and efficient. Even though I was early, I didn't have to wait long. The doctor spent enough time with me to ensure that I understood the results. It was a very comprehensive exam. The experience was very good from paperwork to exam to purchase of glasses. I was happy that there was no pressure to buy glasses on site, but I found a pair that would work well for me and did make a purchase. I intend to make McAlear my eye care provider going forward. read more

I recently had an eye exam at MacAlpine... and it was the best eye exam I have every had. The Dr. is personable and does an excellent job... along with the fact that the equipment is top of the line. I don't think I have ever seen this clearly with any of my glasses throughout my lifetime. It did take much longer than any other exam I have had (I was there for over an hour and a half.) I would have given them 5 stars if I only had the eye exam. But once I exited the exam room, I had to deal with very high pressure sales for glasses. The glasses selection is very high end and very very expensive. Then only the best types of lenses with every type of coating you could imagine. And, unfortunately, they gave me incorrect information about how they use my health insurance. I will go back for future eye exams, but I do not believe that I will buy glasses from them again. read more

Dr. Thomas McAlear is wonderful! I walked in, after they'd closed... and explained my 'situation'. After all, we all have one. Shannon, the receptionist, is a wealth of knowledge regarding lens options & insurance reimbursement. The fine doctor has a great 'chairside' manner, and goes a few miles beyond 'that extra mile' toward the best outcome for the client. Really, see for yourself :) Eye Health Services, in Quincy MA, were Underwhelming, and that's kind. A young woman, with a very loud voice, asked many scripted questions. Leaving me, a health care provider, stunned at her level of disconnection to the patient (me) sitting in the chair. She quickly assessed my vision & wrote what became my prescription down on her form. She then took me to another room where a Dr. Rizkalla was to evaluate me. The Dr came in, looked at my retinas, turned on the overhead light (which blinds me because my eyes are so dialated I would look suspicious to a cop!), and says I have great vision, and there's nothing to worry about. He then promptly leaves. He was there for less than 4 minutes, tops. The upside to the visit? When I went outside, I could not believe the vividness of colors! Takes me back to the 70's... but that's another story :) read more

I highly recommend McAlear Eye Care in Weymouth! My 16 year old daughter has been coming here since she was 13. At age 14 she got contacts, and then about 6 months ago she suddenly had some severe pain in her eyes that kept her up all night. We called McAlear first thing in the morning and he said to come right in. He diagnosed her with an inflamed cornea, and prescribed drops that had her feeling much better within a few hours. Fast forward to last night, and she could feel the same thing starting to happen again. Luckily she still had the drops from 6 months ago, so we were able to start treating it immediately. I called first thing this morning (Monday) knowing they were closed on Mondays and hoping we could get in first thing Tuesday. Dr. McAlear offered to meet us at his office today (on his day off!) just to make sure it wasn't a more serious issue. Dr. McAlear truly cares about his patients and goes above and beyond to make sure they have the best care possible! read more

Wasn't happy with my prior eye doctor. Felt they were trying to sell me what I didnt need. So I decided to check out YELP to see what options were out there. Stumbled across McAlear Eye Care. The receptionist was very friendly, I was able to book an appt online which made my life easier. When I showed up, I did have to wait, longer than I expected but that was because the eye doctor was with another client. It was worth the wait. Dr. McAlear was professional, gave me the down and dirty (truth) did not try to sell me son thing I didnt need (strong prescriptions or extra glasses). I walked away with a bunch of b-cards to pass to family and friends. Would I come back? You bet! Would I buy glasses next time? You bet (nice selection of cool frames including sports frames). Great doctor & staff! My appointment was at 7 PM which is a great time for me coming from work. I was there at 6:50 and they started working with me the moment I walked in. I had my 4 year old daughter and husband with me which can get hectic. She was going around looking at everything. The staff was so nice and patient with her. They showed her little kid glasses, gave her a piece of Halloween candy, and engaged her while mommy was busy. They didn't have to go out of their way so she felt welcomed, it was very nice. My exam was thorough and I learned a lot from the doctor about my options. I have been wearing glasses for years but we spoke about Lasik and contacts and different options I have. The good vs. bad about all options. He is very knowledgeable. The front staff are wonderful also. I wanted a new pair of glasses and prescription sunglasses. The front staffer and the doctor went through my insurance coverage letter by letter to insure I was getting the bang for my buck. She really put all her effort that I was using my insurance coverage the best I could and I was able to do so. I'm super excited for my new glasses & sunglasses coming in. read more

We have been seeing Dr. McAlear since he came to this location. After going to a much larger eye care center, waiting close to an hour to be seen, and then actually seeing the eye doctor for under 5 minutes, we appreciate the one on one that Dr. McAlear provides. He is personable and professional and takes the time to explain and answer all questions. And quite patient with teenagers...with a sense of humor. The office is clean and inviting, and does have all of the state of the art equipment that the larger centers offer. Great eye doctor! I've been here twice, once for a contact exam and once for my yearly exam. They have great deals for people without insurance, my contact exam was actually included in my eye exam. I had some trouble finding contacts I like and the doctor was so great and accommodating, he allowed me to try different styles until I found the one I like.
