I went here to eat lunch last Friday with my sister in law and brother. I ordered the half and half, half Italian sub and garden sald. The salad and the bus was delicious. The sweet tea was delicious and refreshing. We ordered at the counter, and about 10 minutes later the food came to our booth. The building is on the other side of 5 guys, but it was a little bit loud, I guess it was because it was lunch time, and they were busy. Overall the service and the food was delicious. read more

McAlister's King Club (pictured) or their The New Yorker are flat out goodness and are definitely on my favorites list when it comes to "chain" deli sandwiches. A quick grab for lunch. I always add a cup of their potato salad and a dill pickle spear for good measure. My girlfriend is a huge Schlotzsky's fan, but I've just never fallen in love with them. I came here with family during a busy lunch hour and had a good time. They have a large selection of salads, sandwiches, and soups. I ordered the BLT+A and Mac and cheese for a side. Our food came out quickly and the staff was kind. My sandwich was very good and my Mac and cheese was ok, I think it has too much cheese sauce for my taste! Ordered a veggie sandwitch with added turkey. Get halfway out of town and there is no turkey or cucumbers for some reason. Drove all the way back, told them it was wrong and went back to my car with new sandwich. Open it up and still NO cucumbers, which come on the sandwitch anyways. I love McAlisters for fresh ingredients and yummy sandwiches. My favorites are the BLTA and the Club sandwich. There is a wide selection of sides, but my fav is potato salad. The only inconsistencies I find here are in the spuds and flavored teas. Often the spuds taste dry even with all the goodies on top. On the teas, I find about 1/2 of the time they put way too much of the flavoring in the tea. read more

I was here on 10/8 around 6:30 pm and I just wanted to say the young women who were working the front deserve some recognition. They were polite and kind while taking my order. During my meal I watched them work hard to clean up the dinning space and take care of customers. I hope if management sees this they give them some appreciation. When you enter, you may wish to grab a paper menu and decide before approaching the counter. They have a large menu but you'll find time to decide is small once you're at the registers. That being said, the cashier we had was very friendly and patient with our indecision. I had the choose two option. I selected the spicy turkey melt. It was a mistake. The sandwich was primarily vegetables and there was one slice of turkey, which you could not taste at all. The sauce was OK. Look at all that green versus the menu photo, it's crazy out of proportion! I would never order this again. The accompanying tomato bisque was pretty good. My wife chose the Club sandwich, which had plenty of meat and tasted quite good. Our son had the mac & cheese. I liked the choices of the cheese. However, it was kept far too hot to be on the kids menu. He couldn't eat it for nearly 10 minutes after we got it and even then it was because we poured it out and spread it on a plate to cool. It could have caused great injury! This is dangerous on a kid's menu item! Beware and don't just hand your kids their food here, test it thoroughly! The tea I had to drink was very smooth. If I had a choice, and for a kid's safety, I'd probably choose to go elsewhere. There are plenty of delis around. read more

I have never gotten so many wrong orders in my life! I grew up eating here in Mississippi and like anything they are pretty far from the original food. Calling the managers here is a waist of time and I highly suggest calling the corporate office (888)330-4313. Check your to go orders as they get ours wrong 70% of the time. I became a fan of Mcalisters when visiting my family in Omaha and was so glad they opened a location in WDM. My two favorites are the chicken salad and garden turkey sandwiches. When I order the turkey, I swap a croissant for the nine grain bread and the herbed mayo for the balsamic vinaigrette.--that herbed mayo is AMAZING! My preferred side is the fruit cup, it is a nice blend of grapes, strawberries, blueberries and pineapple. The potato salad is pretty good too, although it has egg in it, which I'm not really a fan of, but that's obviously just a personal preference sort of thing. Generally speaking, the ingredients are always fresh and high quality--my only complaint would be that the avocado is often on the brown side, which can be a bummer. When I visit with my mom, she always gets a baked potato--those things are HUGE! They look and smell great. In addition to the sandwiches, my bf RAVES about the mushroom soup. I met someone for lunch last week for my first visit to a McAlister's and it was good overall. Service was excellent and the food was good. I need to try it again to sample some different menu options. On this visit we arrived at noon, so there was a line, but there were three employees at cashier stations, so things moved very quickly. We placed our order and took our order number card to the table. Someone quickly arrived with large glasses of water for each of us and we awaited our food. The sandwiches come with a choice of a side, and there are a lot to choose from. What I didn't know is that apparently you can also substitute different bread options as well. Might not have done it anyway with what I got, but good to know for the future. I opted for the Smoky Pepper Jack turkey - the description partially read 'spice it up'. It was fine, but not a particularly bold flavor. I expected a bit more punch, but it was good, just not exactly what I thought it'd be. My side was coleslaw, which was a pretty typical version of that dish. There are a lot of sandwich options and I'll try a different one next time to see what I think. Definitely worth a shot with the great service and array of options. read more

Only have had the Italian salad & carrot cake here on 2 separate occasions and they are very good. What stinks is that there is a "online cash register" in front left and dine in registers on the right. If you purchase your food online and pay for it ahead of time you can just go in and pick it up off the side wall. However, if you call your order in and still need to pay, you need to go to the normal cash registers and need to wait in what could be a very long line that goes through the middle of the restaurant just to pick up your online order. At least that's what I was told. Why have an online register if the online orders are already paid for and if you called in your order you still need to use the other registers. Makes no sense, and making customers wait through the regular dine in line, just to pick up their food. read more

McAlister's is such a refreshing change to the Mills Civic food scene. There are several burger joints, pizza places, and burrito bars, so having a deli with a fresh (and extensively savory) menu is quite the positive change. This is a fast-casual type restaurant, so you'll have time to look over their extensive menu, usually with help from the many staff-members, while ordering and paying. Their service is prompt, and if you're a person like me who has to ask a bunch of questions and/or give a lot of odd directions for your order, their staff-members are knowledgable and courteous. While you're seated and enjoying your food, they'll walk around and offer to take any empty plates, provide free refills, or just make sure you have everything you need, without you having to get up. Having some serious illnesses that leave me with some pretty serious food limitations, I'm always stoked to find a place that will treat my diet as well as my taste buds. McAlister's does just that. My staple here is the BLT-A on gluten-free, with a side of coleslaw or applesauce, and an unsweet tea. I also have to ask that they keep any utensils that have dairy (butter) away, and ask for half the mayo on the sandwich. They make it perfectly every single time, and have never even questioned my odd requests. Even better, they always repeat my order and accommodations back to me to ensure a mutual understanding. It's that kind of standard I'm most interested in when eating out... other than delicious food, of course. My husband has tried a couple of their sandwiches, and hasn't had any complaints. They don't skimp on ingredients, especially the meat in their sandwiches. They're famous for their sweet tea, but we tend to go with their unsweet tea and it is soooooo good. As an iced tea lover, you know when tea is fresh and when it's a little musty. Their unsweetened iced tea is always perfect. Honestly, there aren't enough great things to say about McAlister's standards and this location itself. If you're in the area, have food allergies or restrictions, are looking for some fresh and healthy choices, or want to mow down on some savory southern-themed meals, you need to come here! read more

After eating the spud, I realize there was a long black hair in my mac & cheese. This disgusted me, I started to gag and I ran out the restaurant. I had ordered off of the kids menu and received a cookie. later in the car while I was eating it, I took a peak at it and there was another hair in my cookie. My wife and I decided to drop by McAlister's Deli while we were in West Des Moines. We heard it was better than Jason's Deli. I was less than impressed. First, a problem with the location, my wife has a handicap plate. There is no handicapped parking outside the store. The other side of the building where Five Guys has it, but where disabled parking should have been on the McAlister's Deli side they had parking for pick-up orders. Not impressed. Then I ordered the Horseradish Roast Beef sandwich. There was hardly any horseradish sauce on the sandwich. It had less meat on it than you get with a Subway 6" sandwich (which is not much), it wasn't quality meat - Jimmy John's roast beef is far superior, and it was supposed to have caramelized onions on it - it didn't. The bun was also soggy. I wanted potato salad for a side, and they were out (this was before 7:00p). They were also out of coleslaw. I decided to upgrade to a bowl of potato soup which was ok, but not spectacular. My wife had the same sandwich but had mashed potatoes as a side which looked and tasted like they came from a box. Looking at some the reviews after I ordered I wished I tried one of their spuds, perhaps it would have been a better dining experience. As far as the claim some have made that they are better than Jason's Deli - I don't see it. The only thing that I liked was the price point, but then again, you get what you pay for. I'd give them a second chance, but, honestly, I don't get over to West Des Moines that often and there are restaurants that I like or haven't tried. McAllister's Deli had an opportunity to make a good first impression, and they failed. read more

The inside of the restaurant has plenty of seating... it is an order at the counter kinda place... if you are looking for full service this is not your place. I ordered the New Yorker to go... The New Yorker is 10 oz of Pastrami and Corned Beef with Swiss Cheese and stone ground mustard on Marble Rye... it was so large I only ate half and saved the other half for lunch tomorrow. The flavor was good and the service was quick. The price was reasonable and you also got a side to go with it... There were several to chose from... I picked the Mac and cheese, I just tasted it and put the rest in my fridge to eat another day. The taste was fine. It is not going to win any contests but it is ok. We had McAlister's deliver lunch for a work meeting today and were pretty happy with the experience. We ordered a variety of soup, wraps, and chips. I tried the chicken tortilla soup (had a pleasant kick of spice to it!) and the Cesar wrap. The wraps were especially good because sometimes wraps can be mushy and/or ingredients stick together weird when they are delivered but this was not the case. The only reason I did not give five stars was because of the price- it's on the higher side of price point per person. read more

I am amending my previous review because in all honesty, I may have been a bit hasty. My one and only complain, and this is just my preference, is that the wrap on my Caesar turkey sandwich was just a bit bland and tough, but the turkey itself was absolutely delicious as was the Caesar dressing. My husband has the turkey harvest, and by the speed that he gobbled it up on, I know he really enjoyed it. The service was great. The people there were very nice and twice we were asked if we wanted our tea refilled. We are definitely going back. Hubby wants to try the turkey Reuben next and I'd like to try the turkey Cobb.
