Visiting Block Island for Valentine's Day weekend. had dinner and lunch. The food was absolutely amazing. The Reuben egg rolls are a must. I also recommend the seafood ravioli. I updated for extra lobster. Sooo good. Now the service. Personable and attentive. Our waitress was genuinely pleasant. I'm sorry I forget her name. She's tall with dark hair and you will know it's her from welcoming smile. I'm not a drinker and she had the bartender make me the best margarita mocktail, after I told her to surprised me. The reason for the 5 stars is we came back the next day for lunch and they were busier and the service and the food was the same. True consistency. We usually come in the summer. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with a couple of my friends. Everyone got their orders and the waitress took accountability, stating that there was a kitchen error regarding my order and they had to remake it. Because of this, they put the order on the house due to the restaurants mistake. Honestly, all I care about is whether or not a public service worker is able to admit to their mistakes, and Dani, my Mcaloons waitress did exactly that. The food was amazing when it came out ( which was quite fast) and I love how they took responsibility. Great people there! read more

We went here while on Block Island since it's one of the only places open in the off season. We went in and not many people were there, but it did end up getting pretty crowded. We had the clam chowder, crab cake sandwiches, and fish sandwich. The clam chowder was good and definitely homemade, this was the only good dish of our meal. The crab cake sandwiches didn't taste like crab at all and were extremely mushy. It seemed like it was all just breading or filler, but we didn't get any crab meat in the sandwiches. The fish sandwich also lacked flavor and was mushy as well. This was an extremely disappointing meal. We will find another restaurant to go to while we are here. read more

We wanted to get a quick dinner nearby and this place looked busy so gave it a try. Food was "ok" and the drinks were "meh". I ordered a small cheese pizza was reminiscent of Mama Celeste's frozen pizza. My garden salad was what you would expect at any takeout pizza joint...edible. My husband got the fish sandwich which was "so/so". Better options on the island, for sure. read more

Three stars and as far as I'm concerned it's a gift. Ok, I was on Block Island a few weeks ago for work. Block Island is part of Rhode Island, and Covid is wreaking havoc on Rhode Island. Highest Covid infection rate in the country. As a result the are in a "Pause". Or lockdown. We couldn't stay overnight so in and out same day. Weather was terrible so when I was finished with work we just drove around sightseeing. 98% of restaurants were closed but turns out Mcloon's is open, so we'll have a late lunch/early dinner. Sign says Covid rules are in effect, but the hostess has a mask that is only covering her mouth but not her nose. Why bother at all. Only one other table occupied so we can sit most anywhere. My wife orders Fish & Chips which she said was one of the best she has ever had. GOD HELP ME. I order their stuffed Flounder, which comes with wild rice. Seafood on an Island should be good right? Two pieces of flounder stuffed with a seafood mix. To start, they are not hot, not warm either. So I'll wait for our waitress to come so they can reheat it. Clearly pre made and heated up. So I wait and wait and wait. Finally she comes around and I send it back for reheat Took forever, in fact my wife was finished before she came back with my food. Sorry but a big disappointment for me. Not sure if I'll be back to Block Island but if I do, I'll go when more restaurants are open, and they are plentiful on Block Island. read more

We were visiting Block island during the off season of November, which meant that pretty much nothing else was open. McAloon's is a cute spot for bar/pub food. I was a little surprised by how much things cost, but it might also be because it was the off season and getting groceries on an island might not be the cheapest. Nevertheless, the staff are great, they have good drinks, and the food is what you would expect. I did think their fries were really yummy. We tried their hangover burger, calamari fries, soft shell crab sandwich, and fish and chips. The best of the lot was the burger. Calamari fries were ok, not sure it's worth the price. Soft shell crab sandwich was a letdown. The crab gets drowned out by all the bread, and it was generally quite a dry sandwich. Fish and chips - pretty average. I do appreciate the fact that this place stayed open when no one else would! read more

Looking for a typical irish pub on the island look no further. Just what we needed on a Cold rainy fall day. Piping hot French onion soup and some cold beer. Great restaurant that is just a short walk from the ferry. Came for lunch during the off season and was surprised to see almost every table and seat at their large bar occupied. After trying the food and experiencing the impeccable service I know why. Our server (wish I knew her name) was amazing. She had tons of knowledge about the island, was super friendly and did a wonderful job making sure we had everything we needed. They had tons of options from seafood to steak, burgers and fries, soups, salads and wings. Highly recommend their crab stuffed mushrooms, chicken wings and Greek salad. Ordered a corn beef on rye - although the order was wrong the first time, the sandwich was very good. The service seemed a bit off that day, but I'd return again to try a different meal. I love them so much but why lie about the hours online and when you arrive to get food, they are closed?

It is off-season, granted. But we had three hungry teenagers and we were hungry too. The kids got burgers and chicken sandwich - the burgers were not a hit with the kids, they left a LOT on the plate. I had the ahi tuna salad with 2 pieces of tuna and just a green salad under it. The spice was good at least. My husband pronounced the crab cake burger "just not very good." We took grilled chicken home for our dog. She didn't eat it either. So, for a whole lot of "not very good" we got a bill for $184.00. Because the waitperson brought the wrong thing to one of my kids, she knocked off $11.00, so $173.00 + tip = not coming back here. read more

Went in the off season- glad they were open! Place has changed restaurants a few times over the years, now it's an Irish pub. I ordered the Guinness stew and was slightly disappointed. It was more of a puree of broth and veggies than a stew, and could have been more flavorful. It did have a lot of beef chunks, but was not served with crackers or bread. Another guest ordered shrimp tacos that were very good, and the specialty calamari was different and full of peppers, onions etc and delicious. UPDATE: We had reservations at the Spring House on a Friday night, but they did not have a table for us, so after waiting 45 minutes, we called Mcaloons to see if they had room, and they kept the kitchen open for us to arrive. Our sever was very friendly, and did not make us feel rushed, even though we were the last ones for dinner. I had the Reuben and it was delicious! read more

I am frequently on Block Island throughout the year and there are several fantastic restaurants on the island to choose from. The competition is stiff and it's a wonder how some restaurants stay open with the amount of challenging menus they must contend with. I have eaten at almost every restaurant on the island over the years and have to admit, I'm picky. I don't think I'm "that customer", who'll complain about every single thing from start to finish, but I do have high expectations that must meet my needs if I'm to go back- friendly and knowledgeable staff members who greet you within a minute or so after arriving, a waiter or waitress that knows how to time the orders, despite the size of the crowd, and checks on you enough times to make you comfortable and satisfied. It must be an establishment that shows cleanliness- including the bathrooms, floors, tables, bar, etc. The food must be delicious, prices within reason. Hands down, McAloons meets my criteria and I have been a loyal customer and recommend this restaurant to all who visit (or live on) Block. I've had the Cajun Chicken Pasta, steaks, reuben egg rolls, salads, and calamari. Each and every time I'm there, I'm not disappointed. What a great addition to Block Island! Amazing location, excellent service, and great food! I tried the fried pickles and the New England clam chowder and clam cakes. The chowder was fantastic. My husband had the corned beef reuben with fries- the fries were double fried, hot and crispy- yum! My brother had the shepherds pie and my sister-in-law tried the burger. All of us were delighted with our meals and cocktails. It's a Irish bar, good drinks ok food. We had a burger and the codfish Ruben sandwich, they were ok we expected better. I think it was just a off day. WORST. FOOD. EVER. Last night we each came in from a long day-hoping for a nice meal. We each ordered the Broiled Scallops, expecting something a little different than what we got. For 24$ one would have expected nice plump fresh scallops....what we received was a small casserole dish with quarter sized round scallops covered in a thin sauce. The scallops were rubbery and fishy-and the sauce was tasteless and watery....the grilled asparagus lacked any taste at all. The rice cake was the only thing with any redeeming quality. We called over our waitress and asked if we might return the dishes. She's took them back and exchanged them for the shrimp tacos and the pan seared sesame salmon. I'm not sure how you can fail with shrimp tacos and salmon--but, apparently it is possible. We asked the salmon be cooked medium rare-to which the waitress responded "we don't cook to temperature on salmon" (Ah-so is it pre-cooked!?!!!). The small sliver of salmon came bone dry (and I mean Sahara Desert-like!)-with three fat pieces of standard tasting asparagus-and another rice patty--all for 26$.. The tacos on the other hand came cold. The flour tortillas were cold-and inside them were TWO shrimps each (2!!). Oh-and some lettuce and tomatoes. And a side of chips. All for a whopping 15$. I realize this is island life, but for 26$ an entree - on an island where the seafood is purported to be 'fresh' -i'd expect that it actually IS fresh, and those who serve it learn how to cook it. I'm happy to pay high prices for food-provided it has taste and care put into its making. The chef here seems ambivalent. It was a busy night for the restaurant so the girls were slammed and the service slow. And while they were really nice and apologetic-the food was just WAY overpriced and awful. If you want more than bar drinks-go somewhere else. read more

The fish and chips is second only to what I've had on the English coast. Hands down the best in the eastern part of North America. We were greeted by staff that treated us like family. There are so many good places to choose from in town, don't waste your time here. They look like they only just opened and are struggling to keep customers. They had one server on and he was awful and essentially admitted it. The food was not good. The people next to us got calamari and it looked like a frozen mess with some banana peppers tossed on top. They both made a face after trying it and opted to send it back. We got mozzarella sticks for the kids and the price for your standard frozen sticks was insane. The fries were greasy. We ordered the loaded fries with cheese curds and gravy and the cheese wasn't a cheese curd... just melted cheese and the gravy tasted overwhelmingly like it was drowning in beer. Yuck. read more

Excellent service, we got the Irish Poutine and clams casino which were both delicious. Tried the Irish stew and the bangers with mashed, awesome portion sizes and very tasty.
