My first time at McCabe's led to an overall enjoyable experience. First and foremost, the food was very good and the menu looked excellent boasting a half price Tuesday burger menu, which I am sure I will be back for. I had the spring menu special pork chop which was very good though lacking the mass I require for sustenance. The main downfall of McCabe's is the overall bland and predictable beer list with only one decent craft IPA on tap (Anderson's IPA which received a 4.5 on Crapper Craft Reviews). While this saved the day the next most intriguing option was...nothing unless you enjoy a Sleeman railside or a Belgian Moon.....No thank you. Beer is why I come to pubs so this certainly knocked a good start off my rating. Secondly the service, which I usually dont give two farts about, was slower than my second cousin Jimmy (bless his soul). All this combined led to a 3 star rating, but I'm a hard ass so take this with some salt. Still one of the better pubs in the city which is pretty sad. STEP UP YOUR GAME LONDON. My second visit to McCabe's the other night with my boyfriend and his friends. We wanted to go someplace within walking distance of our place downtown, but someplace that wouldn't be filled with students either, and McCabe's was the perfect place, and we headed out around 7:30pm, and when we got there, there was room on the patio for us to sit. Our waiter was super nice, asked us our drink order and we ordered appetizers as well. I ordered a Somersby Cider, and for appetizers we got spinach dip, deep fried pickle spears and bruchetta. All came out first after our drinks and were tasty. The spinach dip was a bit on the salty side, but that was okay, we still gobbled it up anyway. Hanging out with three guys, you know the food is going to be eaten. For my main meal, I got the Buffalo chicken wrap with sweet potato fries. The wrap was really good, super spicy and hot, and the sweet potato fries, were sliced into thick wedges and didn't come with a chipotle sauce like most sweet potato fries do. That was fine, I wasn't able to finish my main meal because of the apps we ordered, so I got a take out box to put my leftovers in for tomorrow. I'm glad we went when we did, it started to get busier and more and more people started coming onto the patio, security guard blocked off the back entrance to the stairs going downstairs to the back for the easier access to the washrooms, so I had to use the front and go all the way through the restaurant. If you are going to McCabe's for a nice drink or night out with friends, your best option is to get their early, before the crowds of students fill up the place for the rest of the night to get the best seat in the house. read more

I went as part of an event (about 20 people altogether) on September 20 at about 7:30. I also want to point out that the pub was not busy. While our group was fairly large, the rest of the pub was relatively empty as the night went on. Maybe 40 people in total at any one time in the pub. First of all, it smelled like pez dispensers when we walked in. It was an overwhelming scent. Many in the group commented on this. Immediately when we tried to order beers, the waitress informed our group that they had no beers on tap because their pumps were broken. The exception was Guiness and Kilkenny. Several of us ordered pitchers of one of these two choices. The waitress returned 20 minutes later to tell us that, in fact, they don't serve pitchers of either of these two drinks and that if we wanted we could order bottled beer for only $4 that night. Many in the group ordered mixed drinks or cocktails instead of beer. But I myself, chose to take the waitress up on this very special price of $4 bottles. I ordered a Corona. Others ordered Gin and Tonics and Rum and Cokes. Once these drinks came (15 minutes after we ordered them), not one of them had limes, lemons or any other sort of citrus fruit. These had to be requested. Even the most inept bartender should understand that a lime goes with all of these drinks. Once we finished our first round of drinks, we ordered a second. As a group we were having a good time. Again it took another 20 minutes to bring (and I can't emphasize this enough) bottled beer and very simple mixed drinks. The waitress told us that they were backed up at the bar by about 15-20 minutes so if we wanted a third round we should order now. So we did. Once this was understood things worked a little more smoothly. That was until I received my bill. For 4 Corona's, I was charged $30. While I might have expected this price on a normal night out, the waitress very clearly said "$4 a bottle." I confronted her about this, and she said "oh it was only for domestic bottles." I can assure you that this was not said or made clear when she emphasized the price of beer bottles. Because I was with a large group of friends and coworkers, I did not feel like making a scene by asking to speak to the manager. I did not tip the waitress. While I don't blame her for the inability of the bartenders - there were two - to pour drinks and take caps off of bottles, I do blame her for not being straightforward when it came to the price of bottles. I've been going to McCabes with friends on a somewhat regular basis for a while now. The service is always great and friendly and the food is pretty decent - the Irish Nacho's are delicious! And so is their spicy mayo for sweet potato fries. Saturdays they usually have a band playing or a guy with a guitar playing covers, while some would say that's not super exciting, I love a bit of live music I can sing along to! In the summer time they have a roof top patio that gets great sun and is amazing for after work drinks. read more

McCabes is another one of those places that I'll go to with friends, but I'd never choose to go there myself. I work nearby so we go quite often. Their food is mostly decent, nothing special, but it can be hit and miss. Their burgers, chicken fingers, and sweet potatoes fries are usually pretty good, but we've gotten other dishes that are disappointing. We also occasionally get food that's pretty badly butchered (like a half a cup of salt piled in a plate of fries), which worries me because it shows a lack of quality control. Service is nothing special either. We usually end up waiting quite awhile for food, drinks, or bills. Servers usually seem disinterested. It's quite busy at night, usually fairly loud and standing-room only. Patio is nice in the summer. Overall, I give this place a big, solid "meh". read more

I'm not quite sure what's up with the tequila here but it made me upset. Normally I'm good for a shot or two but this time I wanted to flee the country as to never taste this again. One of the worst Irish pubs in Ontario I've dined at, when will North Americans learn that just cant put Guinness on tap and call it an Irish pub, during my stay at the pub I had bangers and mash which was clearly microwaved potatoes and frozen peas and my draft coors lite was flat, definitely will not be back read more

First restaurant I tried as I just recently moved to London, Ontario. Went there when it wasn't busy. Regardless, had to wait long then I should for the food. When the food came, it was nothing that special. The space and people are nice though, which I can say is the only nice thing about the restaurant. read more

I've visited this bar a couple times. Great for groups and watching sports. Servers were prompt and courteous. The rooftop patio is quite nice. Sure, the view from the rooftop is just some dirty back alleys, but a lot of interesting things happen in back alleys because people think they aren't being watched. McCabe's is one of those places that I don't gush about, but I dont hate it either. It's in this weird limbo. Whenever we attend, I find it is always busy which is a good thing, but getting a table for a large group (like a sports team) is almost impossible. The menu is HUGE. I mean HUGE. They sell everything from butter chicken to pizza and pasta, to a whole page of burgers. I wouldn't say its true Irish fair..more like a worldwide buffet. And everything that I've had has been okay, nothing overly mind blowing. I would say, when it comes to drinks, they do it right. They have half price bottles of wine on Wednesdays. I like their bar area as I find there is enough room to stand around without crowding people sitting. They have live music some nights as well. The rooftop patio was packed the last time I went in the summertime but it looked really nice. I guess I wouldn't choose McCabe's as a spot to eat but I would choose this pub as a spot to grab a drink with friends (just get there early). read more

Came here for drinks. I was actually super impressed with this place. We went early to miss the university crowd. We were able to get a large table very easily. The place was really big and clean and wasn't as disgusting as most bars were back in my university days. Our server was fantastic - very attentive and friendly. Tried one of their drink specials which was a shot of kahlua and honey jack daniels which was delicious. Drinks weren't expensive. We left around midnight when the university crowd starting coming in! Overall a great time. read more

Mccabes presents itself as an "Irish" pub. However the problem with the atmosphere and food is its trying to be too much for too many people. They really have an assortment of food options but they don't do anything really well. The burgers were very good when it first opened however the quality more recently has begun to slide. They do have a good selection of beer on tap and a nice bar and pub like atmosphere, at times. Typically at a pub, you sit down at the bar or even a table and enjoy some drinks. However, Mccabes turns things into a night club on weekends and wants patrons at the bar to give up their seats so that bar crawlers can stream through. The music generally doesn't fit a pub like atmosphere, again, it's like they haven't established their own identity yet. The place, in my opinion, loses stars for trying to be everything. They should just stick with the Irish pub thing and do it really well, so basically English pub food and atmosphere with it. Don't turn your pub into a night club on weekends and ask your regulars to give up their seats. It's worth checking out, but until they establish some type of distinctive identity, I won't be going back. read more
