Located in the vicinity of the Sundial Bridge, Turtle Bay Exploratorium, and the peaceful Sulfur Creek, this Arboretum is a must for anyone who appreciates natural beauty and is an invaluable preserve for those living in the area. I've stopped in twice now for hours and still haven't enjoyed all the wonders within. The main botanical garden is a beautiful mixture of well-maintained native flora and fauna, plaques, statues and pathways. There's plenty to discover and explore here. You can spend your time in the garden or walk miles of trails that stretch back through the surrounding wooded area. All in all, it's clear that the caretakers put time into making this a place people can really enjoy. If you're coming in the spring or summer, when most of the flowers are in bloom, I would definitely recommend getting there earlier in the day. There isn't a lot of shade in the garden itself and the sun can be quite relentless!

Just a little bit of peace and beauty at the end of the Sundial Bridge! The McConnell Arboretum & Botanical Gardens is a collection of beautiful gardens and statuesque artwork. You can a walk along the main paved path and veer off onto smaller trails that will lead you to several different gardens. There are so many different flowers and an abundance of trees. The main path is unshaded but there are several benches hidden amongst the trees where you can stop off to rest and grab some shade. There's a cash only Italian ice cart near the entrance by the Sundial bridge that's available to help you cool off during the warmer months (only open during business hours). This is an excellent place to bring your children! There's a small play area with giant animal and insect replicas. The path is dog and stroller friendly, and it also connects to the popular Sacramento River Trail which is great for runners and walkers! Off the path, you'll see a pretty staircase that will lead you to a small water fountain. It's also an excellent spot to have a picnic or to enjoy your lunch! There are plenty of tables located near the entrance. The gardens are free to enter but there is a suggested $4 donation to help support its' growth. If you're in Redding, I would highly suggest visiting this Arboretum! While you're there, make sure you check out the popular Sundial Bridge, Turtle Bay Exploratorium, and the peaceful Sulfur Creek!

McConnell Arboretum and Botanical Gardens are a delightful set of gardens, located on the north bank of the Sacramento River, just west of the Sundial Bridge's north landing. There is also a west entrance, with a parking lot, and also a nursery where plants can be bought. We walked through part of the gardens one morning as we visited Redding, and enjoyed the tranquil grounds. We saw the California, South Africa and Pacific Rim gardens, including the "Sounds of Water" fountain, which had lots of educational facts about water usage. Also in the Pacific Rim garden was an exhibition of Penjing, the Chinese garden art of making mini-landscapes with rock, plants, and water. While we were admiring the Penjing, we spied a deer on the other side of the fence, along the river front. If you're visiting the Sundial Bridge, take some time to check out the gardens as well for some lovely views, all part of the Turtle Bay Exploration Park. During the summer, the gardens are open 9-5 daily, but during the winter, the gardens are closed Monday and Tuesday, and may close earlier on other days.

These gardens are breathtaking if you like to see natures beauty. Beautiful gardens with so many different species of plants to look at. Beautiful kids mosaic gardens. An awesome water garden/pond with small koi and huge polly wogs. There is also 2 types of water lilies, pink and white. Plenty of benches here n there to sit and take in all the beauty. Lots of butterflies and bees, carpenter bees, humming birds drinking the nectar from the various flowers. OH! and spiders and all kinds of insects to look at. The main path isn't very shady but if you swerve in and out of the side trails you will be in the shade. Its all mostly flat with dirt (and very small gravel) pathways. A stroller or wheeled divice would be just fine along the pathways. At the entrance nearest to the Sundial Bridge there is usually an ice cream stand with a few drinks for sale. Plenty of covered tables and chairs to relax and enjoy your treat at. Restrooms are located at both ends of the gardens.

A nice place to go for a walk. I unfortunately came here when not much was in bloom, but still enjoyed the layout and what they had to see at the time. I've definitely been to better botanical gardens, but it's nice to have one locally near our county. If you don't care for plants, gardens, or paths to walk down while contemplating life, then I don't think this is your kind of place.

2.5 stars There are few blooming flowers to look at in this garden. Having been to Filoli Gardens, San Jose's municipal garden and several japanese tea gardens, I expected a grander variety and color spectrum that shows seasonal bounty. At the same time, with searing temperatures and an ongoing drought, I can understand having plants that are more desert-suited and evergreen. Roses would wilt before the end of May in this heat. Gardens are separated into continents, with dirt trails weaving together each garden. A normal-looking dirt path leads north, away from the main garden, towards Charlotte's crossing. Here, the rattlesnake warning sign made me want to turn around and roadrunner *meep meep* my way out of the area, but there was no path connecting it to the rest of the garden. P and I had to backtrack and make our way gingerly through some tanbark to get to the Mosaic Oasis. We felt bad, but these were some very poorly planned path routes with no signs to explain we were moving away from the gardens. Some plants are repeated throughout the gardens, and you may not see a placard for each location, which can be frustrating. The pineapple-shaped blooms, for example, were beautiful and unusual, but had no description. There are plenty of gorgeous art displays and sculptures throughout, with the Earthstone being the latest installation (made by the Mosaic artist). Hikers and families abound, with the occasional hummingbird and dragonfly. Benches are scattered throughout for a respite in hot weather, but shade can be found throughout the perimeter of the gardens. Sadly, the most colorful area of this garden is the perennial section, near the Sundial Bridge. Stick to the main path (straight down the middle of the gardens) to see the water lillies and ponds, which were a highlight. Admission is $4, payable in the deposit box at either entrance.

It is now 2:00am, and I am still awake thanks to Northern Roots "security system"…read more I live in the neighborhood behind them. Several months ago they installed a new security system to deter break ins. It is motion sensored, and I'm assuming gets set off constantly by the stray cats in this area. When it first started it scared the hell out of me and my kids. We thought it was police with a megaphone on our street. Then we thought it was maybe someone driving by with a megaphone trying to play a prank. We couldn't figure out where it was coming from. After checking in with neighbors, we figured out it was coming from Northern Roots and was also becoming a huge nuisance to all of our neighbors. I went by the business and let them know what was happening. The employees argued with me for a bit about it before agreeing to let the manager know and also informed me they wouldn't do anything about it. I asked them if they would at least have the volume turned down. I was informed "that's not how it works." Months later now all through the night and weekends it goes off constantly. "YOU ARE TRESPASSING! PLEASE LEAVE THE AREA. THIS AREA IS UNDER VIDEO SURVEILLANCE AND YOU HAVE BEEN RECORDED!" Constantly. Since earlier this evening and still continuing it has been going off every 1-3 minutes. I called the non emergency line and made a noise complaint an hour ago, but I doubt they can do anything until the business is open again. It's keeping me awake. I have to take kids to school early in the morning. Roman has to work early. I am losing my mind. So I'm going to leave reviews everywhere I can since Northern Roots doesn't seem to care about how big of a nuisance they are to their own community. Please keep this in mind next time you are choosing a hydroponic store. I will happily remove my reviews when they get a different security system. (In the time it took me to write this post, I documented how many times it went off...it has gone off TWELVE times)

I've been buying from Vic for years... well over 50 visits to his place. All good... but Recently…read moreI started having bad experiences. 1) went in for decomposed granite. Didn't pay attention to what actually went into trailer. Trusted the quality of what I was getting. Get home only to find out it's full of rocks. Rocks big enough to make it unusable to fit in between crevices of stepping stones. I had to return it.. which was something I've never done. Vic took it back, helped me unload it and was apologetic. Vic personally told me he "owed me one". 2) a month later I purchased 2 yards of concrete mix from Vic... was pouring concrete that day and found myself short about 1/16 to 1/8 yard. I went back to Vic.. kindly showed him photos of how I was a quarter wheelbarrow short.. and politely reminded him how I had to return the decomposed granite a month back due to all the rock that got scooped in with it. I thought Vic would Comp me such a small amount of concrete mix.. I was asking for 1/8 yard.. which at $38 per yard the math works out to be $4.75 of mix.. Vic proceeded to overcharge me at $6 .. I'm not upset over the price.. it's the principle of him "owing me one". I will start going to axner excavating even though it's 3 times the distance from my house. Vic lost a customer based on his apparent "word".

They have really great products, but our favorites are there organic soil mix and mushroom compost. The organic soil grows really great vegetables and Vic is very particular about not getting pesticide and chemical ridden material for his soils like most places in this area. Every three or four years if you add mushroom compost to the surface of your garden it will continue growing and producing in abundance. We found the mushroom compost to be very good or fruit trees as well. Put it around the base of your peach and nectarine trees to stave off leaf curl and produce sweet juicy fruit. Thanks Guys!
