I've been buying from Vic for years... well over 50 visits to his place. All good... but Recently I started having bad experiences. 1) went in for decomposed granite. Didn't pay attention to what actually went into trailer. Trusted the quality of what I was getting. Get home only to find out it's full of rocks. Rocks big enough to make it unusable to fit in between crevices of stepping stones. I had to return it.. which was something I've never done. Vic took it back, helped me unload it and was apologetic. Vic personally told me he "owed me one". 2) a month later I purchased 2 yards of concrete mix from Vic... was pouring concrete that day and found myself short about 1/16 to 1/8 yard. I went back to Vic.. kindly showed him photos of how I was a quarter wheelbarrow short.. and politely reminded him how I had to return the decomposed granite a month back due to all the rock that got scooped in with it. I thought Vic would Comp me such a small amount of concrete mix.. I was asking for 1/8 yard.. which at $38 per yard the math works out to be $4.75 of mix.. Vic proceeded to overcharge me at $6 .. I'm not upset over the price.. it's the principle of him "owing me one". I will start going to axner excavating even though it's 3 times the distance from my house. If you are in the Redding area and looking for good service and quality landscaping materials for your next project give Kelly and Vic a call. They have really great products, but our favorites are there organic soil mix and mushroom compost. The organic soil grows really great vegetables and Vic is very particular about not getting pesticide and chemical ridden material for his soils like most places in this area. Every three or four years if you add mushroom compost to the surface of your garden it will continue growing and producing in abundance. We found the mushroom compost to be very good or fruit trees as well. Put it around the base of your peach and nectarine trees to stave off leaf curl and produce sweet juicy fruit. "No Sale" Report I cannot recommend Vic Hannan Landscape Materials or a product Hannon sells, Coronado Stone Products, for the following reasons: In August of 2014 I ordered a shipment of Coronado Stone manufactured stone from Hannan and gave him a check for $7285 for the stones and for the delivery of the stones to my home in Lewiston, CA. The stones were delivered in October. I took samples of two stones each from half of the 16 delivered boxes, arranged them in a collage, sprayed them with water to remove their dust, and let them dry. My wife, my building contractor, and I then examined the stones. Each of us found them unacceptable because of their dull appearance and lack of color, looking not at all like the pictures that I had seen of them in Coronado Stone's catalog or like those on their website. My contractor and I took the stone collage to Hannan's yard in Redding, CA and laid the stones out for examination by Hannan's store manager and his yard man. They looked at them, photographed them, then, with friendly apologies, agreed that the stones were unacceptable. Later, Hannan phoned and apologized profusely for the appearance of the stones and promised that he would come and get the stones and give me a check for the full amount that I had paid. Subsequently, he came to my home, loaded all of the boxes of stones onto his truck, and gave my wife a check for $7285. The next day, Hannan called my cell phone and left a message requesting that I call him, "if you get a chance" to talk about "something I found", or words to that effect. I did not return that call. About a week later, on (or about) October 29th, I discovered that Hannan had stopped payment on his check to me for $7285. He did this without my knowledge or permission. (My credit union charged me $35 to process the Stop Payment.) Hannah had broken his promise of a full payback. When I called him to ask about the stop payment, he told me that my judgement that the stones were unacceptable was wrong, and that his was right, because my sample had not included stones from the bottom of the boxes. (Hannan's staff apparently didn't know that the lower stones were better when they looked at the stones earlier.) He later sent me 16 email photos of an array of stones from my order that he had assembled in his yard as proof of their acceptability. In all of the pictures the stones were quite wet, making them shiny and deeper in color, so I was not able to accurately assess their appearance. (I don't plan to keep my walls wet.) That same day Hannan shipped the stones from his yard back to Lodi. Hannah offered to pay back the $7285 I had given him minus $1633.88 for his transportation of the stones from Lodi, CA and back. He also wanted to charge me $218 for a "credit card processing charge", but changed his mind about that when I reminded him that I had paid him by personal check. He insisted that I sign a Paid in Full release. I requested that he pay me back with a cashier's check, for reasons that I thought were obvious. He refused that request. Because I needed the money, I accepted, then cashed, Hannan's check for $5651.12. For that I had funded the transportation of a load of questionable building materials from Lodi to Lewiston and back. After my peculiar experience with Hannan, I located a reputable, friendly, fair-priced company (Pacific Supply of Redding, CA) from which I purchased excellent products to complete my project. As a bonus, their delivery charges were less than half that of Hannan's. I cannot recommend Vic Hannan Landscape Materials or a product Hannon sells, Coronado Stone Products. read more

I supported this business for a few years buying everything from concrete u-carts to sod. Until recently I didn't have much trouble. The front desk staff nor the owner seemed overly friendly, but it didn't bother me since I didn't have any issues. Recently, a few weeks apart I bought three different types of gravel/concrete mix. I borrowed two different dump trailers to accomplish. The first, a 5' x 10' dump that's really hard to estimate volume in when the gravel is in a pile. The second was a 4' x 8' x 18" inside dimensions. Most recently I bought three yards intending to make two trips in the smaller trailer (1.5 yards each time). After the first load the gravel fills up to about 14" then slopes off in the back. Let's do the math, 48" x 96" x 14" = 64,512 cubic inches. 1728 cubic in are in one cubic foot. 64512/1728= 37.33 cubic feet. 37.33/27 cubic feet in a yard = 1.38 yards. I have bought bark and gravel from all the other competitors in town and 1.5 yards anywhere else is almost spilling out the sides. Granted it's probably closer to 1.75 yards but a good business would err on the extra side. On the second trip I asked the lady at front desk if she can make me whole on the second load. She was very nice and said no problem we'll be sure to load you up on this one. The owner was the one to load me. After his three "half yard" scoops he says see ya later. I explained my situation and that I was assured to get a heavy load on this trip and calmly showed the math. He immediately got upset and started arguing with me about how he's right. He even made a snarky comment saying "oh I know the customer's always right huh?" In this case, yes I was right and have the math to prove it. So we continue to argue and I end up leaving the yard area telling him I can't buy from him anymore to which he responds "good". I made a final attempt to go into the office and reason with the lady at the counter who seemed sympathetic at the situation. She differed to the owner who had already made it back into the office. He storms out with a tape measure and says "let's go measure your box." I was happy to accommodate this request since I knew the numbers. On the way out he's yelling at ME about how he doesn't have time to do this. He tells me I have to shovel all the gravel out of the back of the trailer so he can measure the depth. Looking at this trailer, you'd have to be an absolute idiot to need to do that. The outside clearly shows the depth, he was just trying to make my life difficult. I refused since I was holding my 3 year old son and I wasn't about to make him wait in the truck while I did this. At this point I was hot. Plus it's not my responsibility to prove what I paid for, it's his. After a bit more arguing with me, he yells at me and I quote "Get out of my yard you sucker"! For the first time in my life I was called a "sucker" by a business owner. Who's wrong now? That solidified my theory that he's knows he's wrong, because I am a "sucker" for buying from him. Plus after talking with numerous people about this incident there's a common sentiment that that's how he is. Let's say I was wrong, he has no right to treat a customer like that. The fact that he was immediately defensive tells me he knows he's wrong. He was sure to tell me that in 20 years Weights and Measures have been there three times to assure everything was accurate. Well that may be true, but it's not like they're secret shoppers that don't show credentials first. Do you think he'd knowingly short a Weights and Measures inspector? In summary, 99% of business owners would have gladly loaded me up with an extra half scoop of gravel to make me whole. Instead he chose to take a nasty route. It's hard to quantify the cost of a bad review, but I truly hope that mine will cost him way more than the half scoop he could have added to make me happy. If he did, I would have continued my business with him. Save time and headache, go to any one of his competitors as I have had great luck with them all. read more

Great prices, good selection. I live all the way down in Red Bluff but come up to Anderson to get bulk gravel and mulches because of the good prices. The local landscape supply in Red Bluff charges 3 times as much. I have ordered shredded cedar twice from Vic Hannan and it is always clean and weed free. Weeds can be a problem with other landscape businesses that don't clean the weeds out of their yards. The weed seeds get into the mulch and you end up bringing home lots of unwanted visitors. But no problem at Vic's. Great selection of pavers, you can custom order lots of styles you can't find anywhere else. Well kept stock yard. read more

I recently got 10 yards of Sandy Loam from Vic Hannan. The delivery was on time and the driver went out of his way to put it right where I wanted it. The only disappointment was that there was a lot of rock in the load I got. I called, and sent a picture and Vic promptly called me back. He sincerely apologized and explained that while some rocks could be in there said that what I got was unacceptable. He offered and did send out another load free of charge right away. I think he went above and beyond and will continue to do business with him in the future. read more

Went to buy large amount of seed for over seeding my turf and was told to purchase what turned out to be double the amount needed, after confirming with supplier. Next day I go in to get refund for the unneeded seed, and was told by secretary that I'm a "know it all", and not to come back to buy more seed after I told her the info she gave me yesterday was wrong. I would not be posting this if it weren't for what happened an hour later, the owner calls me and tells me in a string of four letter words what I can do to myself and my lawn. I always thought I was supposed to core aerate my lawn, not ---- it. Just more bad info from ignoramuses. What a way to run a small business... read more

Extremely poor customer service, especially when it comes to the owner. I had a conversation with him on the phone. I can say I have never been cussed out by an employee or owner of a business for a mistake that was not my mistake, it was there's. So getting cussed out by the owner is now a first for me. I've been a customer there for over 10yrs now and I will never go back. I cannot recommend this business. I had a few questions for my project and he took the time to answer them all and did not make me feel that I was wasting his time. I have used Vic Hannah for all my landscaping needs. The prices are reasonable. Every employee there is helpful and courteous. My boys love going there to look at the koi fish pond. On one instance we bought some railroad ties, stepping stones and cement edgers. My husband pulled out of there too quickly and everything came flying out of the bed of the pickup and onto hwy 273. Three employees came out immediately to help clear the debris off the highway and back into the truck. read more

He was friendly and happy to answer my questions, so I decided to give them a try. very glad I did. great selection, really great prices. I have only small flower beds, but went to Vic Hannon's first to buy compost. I didn't know what kind, and they were very helpful suggesting what to buy. I am an oldl lady, and they sold me small bags, filled and loaded them into my car and were wonderful. I know I didn't buy much, but they were very caring and kind. I went back for more compost and have since gotten mulch. They are set up for big business, but are kind to small customers! read more

I picked up a tow behind concrete mixer with a yard of concrete and when i got home with it the mixer had stopped and some concrete was "stuck" on the walls of the mixer, not allowing it to spin. I called the yard and they got the owner on the phone. When i explained to him what was happening he asked the address and was there in ten minutes. Not only did he get the mixer going, which was his obligation, but he stayed and helped me get the concrete poured and spread, then cleaned the mixer and tools, which he was not obliged to do. HORRIBLE! Worst customer service ever! Micheal at vic hannan is a pompus ass at best. I ordered 3k in soil. These jerks were supposed to show up in the afternoon to deliver the soil. We call the yard at 9:45am to be I informed that the driver has been waiting 2 hours and is now headed to another job site. I don' know how why or what the disbatch was thinking but they are trying to charge me 280 dollars by saying we were not ready. The disbatcher said he had been trying all morning to get ahold of us but sent the driver to sit at a freeway exit to wait for us..... really does that really even sound logical. There is a man that works in the office who's really nice and helpful (not the owner). That's about the only positive thing I can say about the people who work here. The woman in the office is downright rude and acts like she doesn't really care if you support their business. She's argumentative and likes to sound like she knows everything. Trust me, you don't! I don't really pay a lot of attention to comparing prices so I can't comment on that but for overall friendly, helpful, people...this isn't the place. read more
