This is the iconic spot for ice cream for many decades and they have different branches throughout Santa Barbara they also sell ice cream to go be sure to get your ice cream fixed here you will not be disappointed
It's hard to fill the void that Tondi left, but McConnell's does a good job. They provide high quality ice cream for a reasonable price, and are very friendly. I definitely plan on returning!

I'm a big fan of McConnell's ice cream here. I went with the 3x chocolate flavor--it's made with three types of chocolate and was creamy and delicious. I had no problem finishing the whole thing and the waffle cone by myself. Just a heads up, this isn't the flagship store. That one is a few blocks away, also on State Street, but it only has about six seats so it's not a huge difference. This location is super easy to get to as long as you're already on the State Street promenade.
I tried McConnell's for the first time and it was TOP TIER! Like immediately! Every flavor I sampled was deliciously creamy, dense, and rich--a testament to their use of high quality ingredients (grass-grazed milk and cream) sourced locally from the Central Coast. It was so difficult to choose! I ultimately went with the Earl Grey Tea & Shortbread Cookies and Sea Salt Cream & Cookies. The Earl Grey tea base was really aromatic and authentic, and the shortbread cookies added a buttery sweet texture, easily one of the best artisanal flavors I've ever tried. As for the Sea Salt Cream & Cookies flavor, the local sea salt in the cream base paired perfectly with the chocolate chunk cookie pieces. I appreciate how both flavors I chose were balanced by elements that cut the richness in such a well-crafted way. My friends got the Eureka Lemon & Marionberries, Churros Con Leche, and Santa Barbara Strawberry flavors and LOVED them. The SB Strawberry flavor was so fresh and unlike any other strawberry ice cream. There's just something about those local Central Coast strawberries! Prepare to pay, but also prepare to be blown away. The quality and flavor make it an indulgence well worth the price. We were greeted by friendly employees who were super helpful with letting us sample flavors and advising us on what flavors pair well together. This location is perfect for grabbing a scoop and walking along State Street or browsing the Farmer's Market! There were also a few tables upstairs and some benches right outside.

In another review on yelp I saw they had cake sprinkles, one of my favorite types of ice cream! Unfortunately they didn't have that flavor, nor did they have a couple other flavors my husband was looking for that he saw on their website. Though they had them in the pint version. I did end up trying the peanut butter, but ultimately went with the strawberries and cream. Wouldn't have been my first choice, but I didn't really have other options that I was eager to try. I'm wondering if they sold out of specific flavors because ordered 30 min before closing. If you like different flavored ice cream I would recommend trying if you're interested, but I wouldn't say it's a "MUST".
I spotted this out of the corner of my eye after a walk from the Amtrak station. So good to hear good things about it that we made sure to hit it up on the way back to the train. Employees were nice and let us sample until we made up our made. Man, everything was so good! What I swallowed: *SPLIT SINGLE: SANTA BARBARA STRAWBERRY & SEA SALT CREAM AND COOKIES: How can I NOT get SB strawberries if I'm here? Man, it was good: creamy with very tasty strawberries. The sea sale cream and cookies was top notch as well. I took note that they are at Sprouts. I'll have to check if they are in the Denver area (pretty please say you are!). If not, we can always online order!
This is not your average ice cream shop. They have some great flavor combinations that are not your basic choices. So if you're looking for plain vanilla, this is not your place. Chocolate hazelnut and brownies - This is rich, but not overpowering. If brownies came in ice cream form, this is it. Almost like eating brownie batter, but better. Double peanut butter chip - Has a hint of saltiness which paired well with the chocolate hazelnut. The chips were not big and more mashed up in the ice cream. Get it in a waffle cone or in a regular cone upside down in a cup. If you're going to splurge, might as well go big!

It feels like one of those places locals and visitors naturally gravitate toward for good reason. We tried the vanilla bean and the sea salt cookies and cream. The vanilla bean was simple in the best way, rich, creamy, and full of real flavor that reminds you how good a classic can be when done right. The sea salt cookies and cream was the surprise favorite. It had a unique balance of sweet and salty that made it stand out from the standard version you find elsewhere, with great texture throughout. The waffle cone alone is worth ordering. Fresh, fragrant, and slightly crisp with just enough sweetness, it elevated the whole experience and made the ice cream feel extra indulgent. McConnell's lives up to its reputation as a staple Santa Barbara dessert spot. Perfect for a casual post dinner stop or an afternoon pick me up, and definitely somewhere I would return every time I am in the area.

It was a hot day and I used that as my excuse to get some ice cream at McConnell's before getting on the train. This shop is fairly close to the train station, conveniently located right across the street. When I entered, I was greeted and told that I could sample any flavors (always nice to hear that). I tried the Earl Grey and shortbread cookies (which was good), but chose to order a single scoop of two flavors (love that they let you choose two) - mixed berry crumble and summer corn & blackberries. They were both delicious and tasted like real berries. It's a little pricey at $7.95 for a single scoop, but they use high-quality ingredients. A perfect summer treat! read more

They were founded in Santa Barbara, and this location is just a short distance away from the original location! I love their unique ice cream flavors. They have new limited release or collab flavors, so there's always something new to try! From their regular menu, I love their Eureka Lemon and Marionberries flavor. Sweet and tart. I also tried the Earl Grey and Shortbread Cookies for the first time and really enjoyed this flavor as well! It had a nice tea flavor, and the added texture from the shortbread cookies was a nice addition! All of their ice creams are so smooth and creamy! The sweet corn blackberry ice cream had a moderate corn flavor and was a good try for any corn lovers out there. the earl grey with shortbread cookies had chunks of shortbread mixed into the earl grey ice cream. however, the earl grey flavor was very mild. both ice creams were very creamy. overall the shop was clean and the workers were nice. there is free samples as well. there is limited seating on a small bench inside and no outdoor seating. seems to be the type of place to eat it standing or on the go while you explore near the beach! read more

McConnell's go-to ice cream spot in Santa Barbara! I can't help but to stop by to grab a scoop or two. The ice cream is always creamy. There's flavors rotate some times but if you don't know what to get, go for the Honey & Cornbread Cookies! That one is my favorite. This place doesn't really need my help on telling you how amazing it is! Everyone already knows! Lines were always long but move very fast! Reasonably priced but each location gives different ratios of scoops. The first time we went we got a good amount of ice cream (photo shown) but the second time we went to the 728 state st location and it was half of what we got the first time, the scoops were so small it didn't even pass the front V of the cone haha. It was not worth what we paid, felt like we kinda got skimped. So not always consistent but otherwise good quality ice cream. If you are deciding between the two locations that are close to each other go to the 120 state one, the wait is longer but the service is much better and you'll at least get your moneys worth! Also wish they had some seating either indoor or outdoor. read more

It's a little bit of wait to get your ice cream, but it's worth it! McConnell's has a good balance between offering the basics and more complex flavors. The shop is clean and you're allowed to have samples before choosing, which is always a plus at ice cream places. I ordered the brown sugar with milk bordeaux, a flavor collaboration with See's Candies. The flavor was delicious and the ice cream is texture is great, not icy at all. Its a bit expensive ($7.50 for a single in a cup), but nothing too crazy considering the area and its popularity. I also tried the mango and strawberry, both solid options as well! It's perfectly sweet, slightly salty, and slightly bitter, which is the most elite dessert combination. This ice cream was so yummy and the service was amazing! I have a gluten allergy and they washed hands and changed gloves before getting my gluten free cone. Then they went to the back to get me fresh ice cream that wasn't cross contaminated. It was amazing to be able to eat an ice cream cone again with no worries!!! read more

Everytime I come to Santa Barbara, this is a must stop. When we come with family, I have to bring them here too. This place had a line outside the door so I had to see what the hype was about. Ice cream is thick and creamy the way I like it. Flavors are limited. Some of the ones I saw on Yelp that sounded good also weren't available. Seasonal, maybe? I tasted a few, liked some and frowned at a couple. I decided on a scoop of sweet cream caramel brownie and sea salt cream and cookies (kind of similar) on a fresh waffle cone. Bummer that there's no store near enough to my city but it's a good thing for preventing unnecessary weight gain. Lol read more
Came here on a Saturday night around 8 pm and there was a line but it went by quickly. The staff was very helpful and even answered our questions about good ice cream pairings. I ended up getting the Apple cider, eureka lemon, reindeer tracks, and blue raspberry. I did the double scoop with 4 flavors in a waffle cup. Everything was so good. The best out of the 4 was probably eureka lemon! There's limited seating inside but there's plenty of places to walk around while you enjoy your ice cream. read more

Nice location on State St, very walkable with lots of places to see and eat and shop at! Line is usually long but moved very quickly. I stopped by to specifically try the collaboration they're having with Sees candy and the Banana Cream with Toffee-ettes flavor was soooooooo delicious, especially if you're a banana fan. It was a little noisy inside but kids are just excited for their ice cream like the rest of us! There wasn't any outdoor seating that I noticed but there was seating upstairs in a loft area. There was also a fridge that had pre packaged pints for purchase and the waffle cone I had tasted fresh! I paired the Banana Cream Toffee-ettes flavor with their Sweet Cream Caramel Brownie and it was magical! read more

McConnell's is well known in Santa Barbara and it is a must try. If you want a variety try their sampler, you can choose up to 5 flavors for 12.99! We got this and I must say my favorite was the Santa Barbara strawberry! It was milky, balanced with sweetness and it had a generous amount of strawberry bites. There's a few locations to choose from, but make sure you do stop by and check them out. read more

This ice cream is definitely different than others I've tried. Very creamy and not overly sweet. The staff are very kind and let you sample as many flavors as you want without getting mad. This shop has Lots of classic flavors but also unique ones. On this visit we tried Chocolate polar Bear claws (See's Candy) , sweet cream caramel brownie, & Santa Barbara Strawberry in a waffle cone. They all were delicious. McConnell's provides ample seating both indoors and outdoors. Water is readily available at the front, and there are restroom facilities located in back. I highly recommend a visit when in the area. read more
