We went to The Cruisery for my dog's 12th birthday, and I'm honestly obsessed with this place. I've reviewed this spot before, but this visit deserved an update because it was such a fun and unique experience. It's right on State Street and extremely dog-friendly--like, dogs of all sizes are welcome and actually celebrated here. Not just tolerated... celebrated. They offer dog birthday packages (yes, really), and for $49 it was such a fun experience. Lobo got a full birthday setup: a reserved table, a sign with fun facts about him, a birthday portrait, cake, a gift, and his own birthday dinner. I ordered him the filet and sweet potatoes, but they do have other options on their dog menu too. And for the humans--they don't slack either. They have a great food and drink menu. I ordered the Flaming Lips cocktail and it's such a fun one... I won't give it away, but yes, there are actual flames involved . I also got the Korean Crunch (fried chicken with red pepper sauce) and it was so good. Everyone else loved their food and drinks too... but I'll be honest, I was a little more focused on Lobo. This place is on the corner facing State Street. There is some street parking which frees up in the evenings and a parking structure close by. We were seated right away and the hostess was super friendly. Our server was preset good, not overly attentive. My biggest issue was that after getting our apps and drinks delivered, she came back to inform us she was going on break. No big deal except she didn't ask if wanted to place our order. We waited over ten minutes for the waitress who was covering for her to come around before we could order. It was just disappointing since we had to wait so long between our waitress and the one covering. The drinks were amazing! Delicious and visually appealing. The margarita flight was a fun choice and you got decently sized drinks. The menu just got updated and was missing a few keys items. However the chicken and Brie sandwich was pretty tasty (the chicken was a bit dry). My friend hated her tacos as the meat was dry and she did not like the flavor. She ended up ordering another item. Its food is similarly peculiar as it is a fusion of popular world flavors all into one menu. I do appreciate that the menu rotates very frequently to keep things fresh, but it does seem like their menu is a bit too large and some of the items are a bit too experimental so the quality control is not fully there. That being said, some of the items I had previously were absolutely show-stopping from the Chicken and Waffles to their French Toast BLT. (Lemonade: B) - Quite disappointed they removed the elderflower or lavender from the craft lemonade that they had before as that was divine. The drink they have now now feels very elementary, although the presentation is still better than the average lemonade. (Brussels Sprouts: B) - Very oil heavy, but I greatly enjoyed the addicting chili oil flavor development playing from a mild spicy x sweet kick to enhance those crispy sprouts. I think the peanuts would add more to the dish if they were candied for flavor or crumbled for texture. (Sangrita Ceviche: C) - I like the mildly developed flavors consistent with a ceviche that is California style. The shrimp is tenderly poached to go with that delicate flavor palette. I do think the presentation is a miss as the bowl rim looks sloppy and the plantains cover the entirety of the ceviche. (Banh Mi Plantain: B) - Very intriguing one biter, but I think the plantain is used as a chip, rather than being the star with the naming; furthermore, I think the intense Vietnamese flavors that come through with the pickles and the creaminess are missing here. Questions were met with short, dismissive responses, and basic courtesy seemed to be missing throughout the meal. I understand restaurants get busy and everyone has bad days, but there's a difference between being busy and being unfriendly. Customer service goes a long way, and unfortunately this experience left a bad impression. Which is till 7pm I believe. Menu for drinks were great. They also had small plates as well as tapas on the happy hour menu. Also, a doggy meal for the babies. The spicy prick and mango inferno were excellent. Good cocktails to start your meal. We also had the burrata which to me was almost like a ceviche as its was more watery versus it being just a lump of cheese. Still good. And the ceviche, which was nice with plantain chips. Portion was pretty small though. For tapas, we had some of the arancini, choripan and bacon poppers. These were smaller pieces but great for ordering a few to try out. I'm not much of a burger person but both the cruisery and chimichurri burger were good. Cooked well and juicy. Paired with the right condiments and served with shoestring fries. Went here on Monday for happy hour drinks! We ordered the Jamaican 10 Speed and ordered a basket of fries. The cocktail tasted great! It reminded me of a pina colada because it was sweet and fruity. As an individual suffering with severe anxiety coupled with dietary restrictions (I am Celiac); I can often get overwhelmed by too many decisions especially when it comes to restaurants/eateries. This REALLY comes to a head when in Santa Barbara on the famous State Street which is brimming with restaurants, bars, cafes, gastropubs and every other type of food real estate. If you have anxiety or simply feel inundated when in Santa Barbara; allow me to make it easier by introducing you to The Cruisery. I know the food stimulus on State Street is high but meander toward the end (or beginning, depending on where you are positioned) of the famous boulevard toward the Stearns Wharf and you will find The Cruisery. The Cruisery is sort of a love child of a brewery and hipster gastropub (for my fellow Los Angeles residents: I would compare it to a spot you find in Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Eagle Rock, etc) that welcomes with high ceilings, shiny wood counters and walls, Edison lightbulbs, tall stools and kitschy (but not cheesy) décor. We ventured in during Happy Hour (3-7pm) for a light lunch snack while celebrating my 40th birthday in Santa Barbara. The Cruisery wasn't very busy (which I prefer) and the staff was friendly and courteous. Now, I know what you're probably thinking: that The Cruisery is just like any other gastropub serving up overly-expensive burgers, fries, tacos, salads, etc. But stop right there and hear me out: yes, The Cruisery DOES serve these dishes but they are elevated to a culinary experience you would expect at a fancy restaurant with ingredients such as braised beef, pork belly, homemade remoulade, ceviche, fancy oils and farm-to-table veggies just to brush upon some of the offerings. Theirs is not a typical bar menu and is more on the fine dining end of the spectrum. For our light bite 'lunch', we decided to order from the Tapas and Small Plates Happy Hour menu. My dining partner chose a tapas smorgasbord complete with Arancini (rosemary infused risotto, gooey mozzarella and lime aioli - $2), Choripan (chorizo with chimichurri & roasted garlic aioli on toasted Chiabatta - $3) and Bacon Popper (Cheese-filled Jalapeno wrapped w/bacon, topped with candied bacon jam - $4) while I opted for the small plates side of the menu with Sangrita Ceviche (shrimp, house sangrita, avocado, pineapple, red onion, roasted bell peppers and cilantro served with plantain chips - $10). Our meal arrived rather quickly and let me tell you: it was stunning! Once again, The Cruisery shines brightly beyond all other gastropubs with yet another classy element because these plates were works of art and not what you expect at a bar. Bright colors, fresh ingredients and robust, delicious scents smacked our senses. My dining partner enjoyed his choices with the Bacon Popper being his favorite. Even I, who does NOT like bacon one bit, thought it was delicious with the warm, candied sticky bacon bits being a perfect complement to the cheese and jalapeno. The Arancini was also lovely with a crisp exterior and tender interior with a sweet lime aioli that I devoured although my dining partner wasn't a fan of the sweetness and preferred the Arancini without it. I didn't try the Choripan but my dining partner disclosed that it is slightly greasy but tasty and the Chiabatta bread was on the French bread side of things which worked well. My Sangrita Ceviche was PERFECT: bright, just the right amount of acid to sweet ratio and very refreshing. The plantain chips made for a delicious scoop and the sangrita was heavenly. My mouth is watering and craving it just thinking about it! If all this isn't enough to steer you towards The Cruisery; then how about this: they have a little house pup (I think they said it was the manager's dog... or maybe the owner?) who is the cutest little thing sitting like a doggy model in a basket (can be tagged on instagram @PenniKandace). I'm by far a cat person and not super into dogs but even I was a puddle of goo around this sweet thing! So cute! The Cruisery is absolutely fantastic and I would return without a second thought to try their dinner dishes and drinks. So, if you're meandering down State Street feeling overwhelmed; cruise on into The Cruisery. You won't regret it. read more

Great place for larger group. The tables inside are very long with benches and seat probably up to 12. We were 7 and had lots of space to spare. The menu looked so good I wanted to try everything. I was dieting and had a salad so my meal was meh (not big on salads but the panela fit the bill) and I would have preferred more avocado vs cucumbers but everyone else got the various sandwiches and loved their dishes. I would love to come back and try the cheesesteak bibimbop! Their mixed drinks also looked creative and yummy. Friday night (approx 10:20pm) was my first time in the nightlife of Santa Barbara (visiting from LA) and my partner and I went here after seeing it had good reviews for both beer and food. We walked in not knowing it was bingo night. The people next to us were leaving as we were seated and gave us their cards and raffle tickets. (SIDE- the bingo host seemed bored and unmotivated, idk maybe that's the SB vibe). I didn't get the name of the server that was serving us at the time, but she was about 5'2 middle age, and very fast and impersonal. My first interaction with her was immediately unfriendly. My partner and I (Mid 20s) ordered a two alcoholic beverages and the sever asks for our IDs. I pull out my wallet, and show it to her through the plastic covering in my wallet. (FOR CONTEXT, We just came from Wine Therapy and I asked if the bartender needed me to take my ID out, and he said no, and checked my age as I flashed him my ID in my wallet). As I'm showing the server my ID through my wallet, she grabs my wallet from out of my hands and removes my ID from my wallet. She then uses the card reader as light to view my ID very closely, hands me back my wallet, stares at my ID a bit longer, and then flimsily hands it back to me. She then rudely says "sorry it's California law, you have to take it out," and I reply back with "oh. I could've taken it out myself". While it seems like a small interaction, it felt inappropriate and invasive and ruined our experience. My partner and I did not even finish the beverages we ordered because we were just uncomfortable.
