I had a deeply disappointing experience with McCoy Jewelers that I feel compelled to share, especially for anyone considering them for something as costly and meaningful as an engagement or wedding ring. After reading yelp reviews, I was drawn to them based on the reviews and them being a small business and operating since 1973 I took in my late father's vintage wedding band to have it resized so I could wear it. The original size was 10.75, and they measured my finger at a small of 9.25--a reduction of 1.5 sizes. They quoted me $250 for the job, with half due upfront. The technicians were articulate and displayed skill. I trusted their expertise and left the ring in their care. When I picked up the ring, it felt uncomfortably tight. Their response was simply, "Give it a few weeks." As time went on, the ring became so tight I couldn't wear it at all. When I returned, they insisted the work was done correctly at the time and blamed my finger for supposedly changing size. They offered no solution, only excuses. I asked them to resize it to a 9.5 or 9.75 so I could wear it. The refused. When I tried to discuss my concerns, the owner dismissed me with condescending double talk, suggesting I was just a difficult customer because I hadn't worn jewelry before. I felt insulted and taken advantage of. To add insult to injury, they kept the gold removed from my ring during resizing. For a typical men's gold band, reducing by 1.5 sizes removes about 1.2 to 1.5 grams of gold--worth roughly $120 to $150 at current prices. Ethical jewelers follow the practice of returning this gold to the customer, but McCoy's did not. Instead, they kept it, likely to resell or reuse, which felt dishonest and exploitative. It's important to mention that getting engaged and dealing with expensive and meaningful jewelry for a lifetime is already a stressful time. You need to be able to trust the people you're working with. Unfortunately, McCoy Jewelers only made the process more stressful and left me with a bad taste. Eventually, I had the ring properly resized at a reputable jeweler in Chicago for $85, and now it fits perfectly every day irrespective of the time of day, the weather, or my body temperature. In summary: McCoy Jewelers overcharged, kept my gold, failed to stand by their work, and treated me poorly. I support local businesses whenever I can, but I cannot recommend this one. My experience shows that, at McCoy's, the customer is definitely not always right. read more

They were great with communication and getting it done in a timely manner. We recently went back in to get our wedding bands made. I must confess that I don't think I could have asked for a better experience buying engagement/wedding jewelry than that which I had at McCoy's. I hope to never go through it again (you know...only one marriage and all), but I can highly recommend both the gentlemen who work there (Rob and Jonathan) and the service and goods they render. Step One: The reset an heirloom diamond into a new engagement band. Beautifully done, and when the ring needed to be sized, they did so with joy and speed. Step Two: Wedding bands. Much to their credit, there was never any sense of pressure to buy more, buy bigger, or to spend more. I cannot say I had any major design elements I wanted for my wedding band, but I picked out a couple of ideas, and Jonathan then did a few different designs from that. When none of those really rang my bell, he tried again, and did so with a sense of delight. "I want you to be happy with this forever," he said. He eventually got things just right. The Cute Girl had a similar experiences when they designed the wedding band around the diamond of the engagement ring. We are both delighted with the results. Both rings (my wedding band and her engagement/wedding rings) are simply beautiful. Side Note #1: you can likely find a ring cheaper online at some huge dealership. But you know what? My ring was made by an old guy who made a wax model, made a cast, and then melted down some platinum, made a ring, and then polished it to a high shine. When I spoke with Rob about this, I very much got the idea that he understood the significance of his work, its enduring nature, and the fact that his time and talent would outlive himself, myself, and my kids (when I have them). I'm delighted to pay more for something like that, for in the long run, it'll cost me less than a penny a day to something artisanal rather than something made en masse. I think that's pretty special. Side Note #2: When Jonathan came back to TCG and I with the cost of my wedding band in platinum, he also came with the prices of the same ring in different materials (white gold, and some other platinum-based metal). While I thought the price was well within our budget, I appreciated the fact that he was concerned about the cost of things. Side Note #3: They got things done very quickly: with style and panache. They said it would be done on a Friday, and I picked it up on Friday. This was good, for the wedding was on Saturday. In everything they did, the elicited a feeling of confidence in their services. In short, I can recommend the gentlemen at McCoy's without any reservation whatsoever. I'm delighted to carry a bit of them on my left ring finger. read more

My husband and I had the best experience with McCoy. My husband first started working with them when he was shopping for my engagement ring. They helped him create a custom design that was exactly what he knew I would love. We went back later to figure out wedding bands and they helped us come up with multiple options and the benefits of each. They ended up subtly incorporating the sapphire design of my ring into my husband's band. It turned out really nice. My engagement ring and band are a beautiful set. I get a lot of compliments on them. I also got a pearl solitaire necklace from them to wear on my wedding day. It turned out exactly the way I wanted. It was beautiful! It's also nice that whenever I go in to get my ring cleaned, they know me. You don't get that from big jewelers. The guys at McCoy remember you because they work directly with you and they work on your jewelry themselves. They are an awesome team to work with and make beautiful jewelry. I definitely recommend them to anyone, especially for engagement/wedding jewelry. read more

They helped me find exactly what I was looking for at the price I could afford, without any pressure or attitude. They also answered all my questions and explained in plain terms how they priced their items. Unfortunately, I had to return the jewelry about a week later - not because of any problem with the necklace - and McCoy gave me a full refund, no questions asked. A stellar experience. My fiance designed a custom engagement ring/wedding band from McCoy's last year and we both couldn't have had a better experience. My fiance had several meetings with them to design a one of a kind engagement ring, with a design so unique and personal it brought me to tears. Their service was second to none. When it came time for the big proposal they provided us with a ring box that video taped our special moment.They then created a video of the footage, which is an amazing memory I now can relive whenever I want. After purchasing a Iowa Hawkeye Bead from a local store in the Quad Cities that was made by McCoy Jewelers to fit a Pandora bracelet, the bead stuck trying to put it on the bracelet. After taking the bracelet to 2 jewelers it was determined that the bead could not be taken off without cutting the bracelet. I asked McCoy to pay for part of the bracelet and refund our money for the bead. His response was to send the bracelet to his store and he would work on, but would not commit to any financial reimbursement. I had to cut the Pandora bracelet in order to bet the other beads off and find a replacement bracelet at my expense. The store that I originally bought the bead from refunded me the cost of the bead but McCoy never paid for any part of the bracelet. I will never recommend any of my friends or family to frequent McCoy Jewelers until I have full reimbursment for the bracelet that his bead ruined. read more
