I move around a great deal so I have used over a dozen moving companies in the last 30 years. The McDermott family has set a new benchmark for excellence in the local mover category. They were prompt, extremely efficient, well prepared, and treated my belongings like gold. Not one single item was damaged. Their price was very competitive but their service and professionalism was head and shoulders over the competition. My wife was overwhelmed at the little touches such as they provided a dozen wardrobe boxes on moving day so we did not have that extra expense. There were no surprise hidden charges like many others. Highly recommend McDermott Moving Company. Having never hired a moving company before and hearing horror stories about moving companies - we were apprehensive in hiring anyone. They did not come ahead of time for a quote. They work by the hour until the job is done. Was a little suspicious of that but since they came recommended by our realtor, we took her word for it. They arrived on time, immediately got to work, very fast, loaded a 26ft truck and never stopped once during our 4 hour move (including drive time). This is how business should be done. This morning was my first time using McDermott Moving Company and I can honestly say I won't call anyone else to move me in the future. These men were on time, organized, task oriented, and made sure I was completely satisfied with the job each step of the way. You can pay anyone to move you, but until today I didn't know I should have expected more from a moving company (and I've used a few). Ok, specifics: any time I've phoned Mr. McDermott, he's gotten back to me immediately if he didn't answer directly. He's been doing good business for years and it shows. I'm accustomed to having to remind the moving crew and repeat myself. Nope-these guys came fully informed and prepared. Communication was top notch. So impressive! In the past I've had movers who either rushed through the job or were very relaxed (joking around, foul language, basically acting like kids). These men show a work ethic I don't see much anymore. That's huge. Yep, HUGE. Any items that were unstable, broken or obviously missing parts were set aside for me to inspect before entering the truck. Again, the communication was impeccable. (I already knew what was broken, but these guys are so forthright. They take responsibility for every item that enters their truck). I'm just so impressed. These are just a few things that set this company apart. As a female trying to blend two larger households into a small apartment, moving is stressful. (God, I hate moving!!) Wonderful experience using this company to move. First time using a moving company and I will say they set a high bar. We moved from KC to Columbia and it was executed flawlessly. The whole of our belongings remained intact and they had our apartment all moved out with lightening speed. Upon arrival in Columbia everything was unloaded exactly where it needed to be. The staff were friendly, cooperative, and helpful. The bill was straightforward, fair, and very competitive. Mr. McDermott was very friendly and responsive. He called my wife 48hrs before the move to confirm everything and called me on the day of the move to make sure we were satisfied with the experience and we were. I used this company because my brother, a local contractor, uses them for moving his show homes, and he highly recommended them. I now know why he uses them. They are fantastic! The experience from start to finish was great. They are polite, professional, and very experienced. My husband and I had a complicated move, because our move out date was different than our move in date. But they made it very easy. They moved all of our things out of our loft quickly, without any issues. The 3 man crew worked together and were very proficient. They had all the tools needed to make our move successful and they provided us with free wardrobe boxes. The leader/foreman of the crew did an amazing job of encouraging and guiding his team with difficult turns, angles, and large pieces of furniture. After they loaded our things in record time, they stored it for us for three days before we could move into our new home. The same crew met us on our move-in day and we walked through the house to make sure they knew where everything went before unloading. Again, they worked quickly and had everything in the correct places in only a few hours without any damages or issues. They even followed up with a courtesy call the next day to make sure we were satisfied. I will definitely use them again for any future moving needs. They were wonderful! read more

Didn't even get so far as to use this company. When we were shopping for movers, my fiance had a conversation with a representative of the company that was curt and seemed to be bothered with her call. When he was trying to set a date with us, my fiance stated that she needed to check with her work and with me first to see if the proposed date would work. She was met with a "whatever" from that representative. This made us feel that we were not a priority and can be perceived as unprofessional. I cannot speak for their actual work as these other reviews have, but I can say that our experience was not so positive and resulted in us giving our business to another company. read more

What an easy move from a great company. The truck showed up and the guys got to work right a way and quick realized that one truck my be cutting it close and about an hour later a second truck showed up to help. Because the company charges by time worked this really saved us money instead of having the same truck go unload and come back for a last few items and go and unload those. Everyone was friendly and professional. Not planning to move for a long time, but if we had to would use again in a second. Would highly recommend. read more
