The Meat Pies filling was good, but the entirety of it was pretty greasy and oily which was a little disappointing. I do hope they do another Zelda night and offer more food options. So, I'll admit, I approached a barbecue restaurant north of the Mason-Dixon Line with equal parts curiosity and skepticism. What first caught my eye at Wildwood Barbeque was the stack of firewood out back. That always gets a Texan's attention. I never spotted a traditional offset smoker, though. Walking through the front door, I picked up the unmistakable aroma of hickory, and maybe a touch of apple smoke, which immediately put my senses on high alert. A glance toward the kitchen revealed one of those modern hybrid smoker ovens. Purists may debate them, but at the end of the day the food is what matters. One look at the menu made it clear Wildwood isn't trying to be a bare-bones barbecue joint. It's a full-fledged Southern restaurant serving burgers, po'boys, salads, sandwiches, Cajun favorites, comfort food, and smoked meats. Before I even ordered, though, my eyes wandered to the dessert case where the cake slices looked big enough to have their own ZIP code. Around Texas, we'd simply say they're as big as a county. I kicked things off with an order of burnt ends before settling on the sweet tea-brined smoked chicken. The burnt ends arrived carrying a wonderful kiss of hardwood smoke and what tasted like a light coating of barbecue sauce. They were cut into small cubes, and while several pieces were tender and flavorful, others received too much time in the pit. The smoked chicken, however, was the star of the meal. Every bite carried the subtle sweetness of the tea brine, balanced by a well-seasoned rub that finished with just enough spice to keep things interesting. It was juicy, smoky, and thoughtfully prepared. The lone disappointment was the potato salad. As someone who's eaten just about every version served from Texas smokehouses, from mustard-based Hill Country recipes to creamy East Texas family traditions, I honestly couldn't figure out what this one was trying to be. It lacked the character and comforting simplicity that make potato salad the perfect barbecue side. Wildwood may not transport you to Lockhart, Lexington, or Taylor, but it doesn't have to. It carves out its own identity by blending Southern cooking with smoked meats, and the chicken alone is worth coming back for. Just save room for one of those Texas-sized slices of cake.

Is it three in the morning? Are you feeling hungry? Did you just finish a handle of Rubinoff? This 24 hour McDonalds is the place for you. The service is good and friendly, with mostly motivated students as the primary employee, and the location has clean table tops despite being in a college town full of dirty hippies and drunken bros. I used to be quite fond of fast food but after a few years of spending almost ten dollars on a Big Mac with a large fry and a Dr. Pepper that usually only provided me with soft poops and hunger within a couple of hours - I started to look elsewhere for my daily intake of nutrients. I lost my appetite for The "Big Mac" which McDonalds describes as, "A double layer of sear-sizzled 100% pure beef mingled with special sauce on a sesame seed bun and topped with melty American cheese, crisp lettuce, minced onions and tangy pickles." when I heard about David Whipple's McDonalds burger that hasn't received any attention from our natural decomposers after fourteen years due to its preservatives (It turned out that all burgers generally don't decompose due to their lack of moisture in the same way beef jerky doesn't). Despite the fact that the McDonalds burger that didn't compose turned out to be a misconception, it did lead me on a path discovery. I may qualify as what some might call a conspiracist, but I do believe that GMO's are eating our intestines and that 9/11 may have been an inside job. The notorious, "Big Mac" is actually two patties of GMO fed cows raised and abused in profit driven Monsanto controlled farms between three of the cheapest buns money can buy all while being topped with wilted lettuce, browning onions, sketchy pickles (all of these shipped over a thousand miles). The special sauce is just a a concoction of mayonnaise and ketchup. You may be reading this scoffing at the cliche subject of GMO's when it comes to our food industry but as a long time GMO-er, I always feel the need to stress this issue. GMO talks go back in forth as every study contradicts the other, but to me it only makes sense that seeds that are genetically modified to contain a pesticide to kill pests by eating away at their intestines would also eat away at our own intestines. Everyone laughs at Gluten Allergens but the intolerance is real due to these GMOs. I'm not going to go into specifics but check out the growth in food allergies since the introduction of GMOs. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not perfect, I indulge from time to time. That's where this review of the McDonalds on Route 9 in Hadley gains its momentum. This McDonalds rules (even though it doesn't have the play place that it once did before it switched over to the other side of route 9). It's brand new. It appears to be well managed. The employees keep themselves occupied in between drunken orders even when you stroll in at 2 in the morning(maybe a little drunk yourself). The bathrooms are big and clean just the way everyone likes 'em. There's nothing better than a nice handicap stall and there's nothing worse than being in one of those sticky situations and there's nothing that you can touch confidently. This bathroom sparkled. The no touch sink and those sensor'd paper towel dispensers make for a nearly hands free experience which is greatly appreciated in public restrooms. Even though it can be frustrating when it lasts just a few moments, at least it uses less water right? The moment you walk into this crisp McDonalds you forget everything that goes against your doctors advice. No McDonalds is good for you in any way, but if you're gonna do it, do the McDonalds on route 9. read more
