This place is great! If you're in Hvl and missing Never Blue, come here to find some familiar favorites and more. Blue Ruby is the cafe, open 10am-3pm, and their pastries are amazing. Of course you gotta try their Luscious Buns, but you should also try the Miso Almond cookies, a danish, or a Chocolate Croissant Loaf, all baked in-house! The service is super friendly and helpful. If you're visiting from out of town, they'll even help you out with recommendations and ideas of other things to see and do. Super cute spot with a nice menu and friendly service. I had the shaved turkey apricot sandwich and the flavor were excellent!! The vanilla bean-apricot preserves make it otherworldly!! What a great pairing. The only part I didn't really understand was the buttered bread on the outside. The sandwich is cold, but warm butter is poured on the top and bottom of the sandwich, which makes the bread slightly soggy. Not an issue, but it's quite messy as you eat it. The generous portion of turkey requires a solid grip and it makes for a very greasy set of hands. I might ask for the butter to be on the inside next time. Otherwise, I wouldn't change a thing. I have heard good comments re the Blu Ruby. So my friend & I went there to order a sandwich to split for a carry out. We had some questions for the staff which seemed simple, eg, would they cut our sandwich in half. No one seemed to know the answer. Since we were traveling would there be napkins in the box. Another question that stymied the staff. When it arrived & we opened the box we saw a half a sandwich, cut in half! Really? Where was the rest of this $16 sandwich? Again all were stymied. It was the owner who resolved this mystery. Since this was a muffuletta and items were "imported" from New Orleans they only sell them by a half for $16! (I wonder if the Italian salami also is imported & an exuberant price is on it)? Of course, this information was not on their Menu Board. We were their very first customers for the Blue Ruby lounge. We were thrilled to see some of our favorites from Never Blue on the menu such as the mussels. Food was delicious and ambience was cozy and eclectic. Love that it's 18 and over. Cocktails were very creative and delicious. Highly recommend going to a movie at Flat Rock Cinema and having dinner here before or after the movie. We tried several dishes such as the mussels, crab cakes and other tapas. Seared cod with a jalapeño sweet sauce and white rice, root veggies was so unbelievably spicy it was not edible. The piece of cod was 1-1/2 " x 2-1/2" at the most. $18. Two sangria drinks-$11 each. That "dinner" with tip=$75. We thought about dessert but.. blown away by the price of a piece of chocolate cake, that they used to have at NeverBlue for $8. The current price is $15. This is not your place if you are looking for a fine dinning experience. My wife and I, both retires, had the most unpleasant experience at Blue Ruby tonight. The restaurant was recommended by friends who shared a menu with us. It was an eclectic menu and we brought a nice bottle of Napa red 2016). We were promptly seated at a small corner table near the entrance. Our waitress appeared promptly and we ordered an appetizer and told her we would like to have the wine with the appetizer and then order our entrees. She told us the bar tender had to open the wine. She brought wine glasses to the table unlike any we had ever seen for red wine (a short stem and high sides with none of the traditional curvature). Our appetizer came within 5 minutes and when our bottle didn't return after 20 minutes I went to the bar and asked what had happened with the wine. That person relayed that she had an unhappy customer and someone appeared from the kitchen. She told me I was being rude when I explained my concern about the wine. She told me the cork broke when the bartender tried to open it and was referred to her ( she later identified her self as one of the owners ). I asked why I wasn't informed and she accused me of talking too loud. I was at the bar and had to speak in a louder voice to be heard) and then she called me rude. I returned to our table and she finally arrived with our wine. My wife asked her about the glasses and she told us she was comping dinner ( we had 1/2 of an appetizer ) and told us to leave. We are experienced diners and have never been treated like this. When we got home we enjoyed the bottle, and guess what, there was no cork in the bottle ( as I expected as it wasn't an old bottle of wine. read more

I had the smoked chicken salad sandwich which tasted fine. My biggest complaint is that they offer water in plastic bottles rather than tap water. Ambiance is nice with brick walls, seating is available inside and out. I ordered a muffalotto I asked that it be made vegetarian as I don't eat meat. Which they complied. It was delicious the bread was fresh, the provolone flavorful even the olive mixture on the sandwich was good really nice flavor not greasy just perfect and I am not a fan of olives. It had a small side salad that accompanied the sandwich. Plain greens with a few cucumber slices in a very good salad dressing. Refreshing with a little light zing. When I went to order my roll I told them how much I enjoyed the sandwich they were like good but that was it. It was so good that I decided to go for a cinnamon roll. Could anything beat a Cinnabon ? Well again it did not disappoint the roll part was good not to doughy and the cream cheese frosting was generous and tasty. My friend had a coffee cake that she raved on. Coffee was average. I like a bigger mug. But why you say did I give it 3 stars well I tell you if I am dropping my money somewhere I like to feel appreciated. When we went in it was 11 a.m. on a Sunday morning. It did not appear over crowded. The women who took care of us had 3 young girls back behind the counter who did much of nothing. I noticed another young lady who came from the back area bringing food with a scowl on her face. I also noticed another lady in her 40's who looked like she might be in charge but no friendlier. You would think if she was the owner or manager she might come and ask us about our meal but no just looked. My friend and I left to head over to the moviehouse next door. My friend thanked them I did not. After we exited she said boy the food was good but they were not friendly. I don't want to hear that they were crowded and busy because that was not the case. They need to learn customer service from Flat Rock Cinema who could not be any more appreciative of your business. Would I go back again delicious food but I am undecided.
