Went camping to just get away from life. I went from Sunday to Tuesday. When I arrived, i was greeted by the attendant at the gate who was really friendly. I had two dogs in the car and she just couldn't get enough of them. (They are pretty cute). I thought I would have to pay an extra fee for them but she didn't say anything so neither did I. :) She asked me if I knew which site I wanted and I told her I hadn't been here since I was in high school. She told me to drive around and pick out a couple sites. I drove around and chose site 68 for the shade the trees provided. (since I didn't have a canopy). Went back and told her my site number and went and settled in. Being a Sunday, it was pretty desolate. Come Monday, almost everyone was gone. It was nice, peaceful and quiet. I didn't walk to the beach since dogs aren't allowed. So I drove them to Harbor Cove which is in Ventura Cove are. Took them to lunch at Margariaville and then walked around the harbor. I'd definitely come back. No real cons for me. The spiders might be con for most, BUT you are outside at a park. Can't really get rid of the bugs now, can you?! Firewood is $6 a bundle. I bought 6 bundles for two nights and it seemed to work out perfectly. You just go over to the camp host and he gives you the wood you need. Bathrooms were always kept clean and stocked with 2 ply toilet paper. YUP, you read correctly....2 PLY! I'll be back!

Great place to go camping. However, you MUST book early, as weekends fill up really fast. ==Specs== - It's relatively cheap: $35 (plus an $8 transaction fee) for a spot of land to pitch a tent and park a car (a maximum of 3 cars are allowed at each site). Once you pay, you'll have free ingress/egress until the gates are locked at 10 pm. - Check-in is at 2 pm; checkout is at 12 pm. - Download the .pdf brochure to see which campsite you would like (hint: it's best to pick one at the top closest to the beach): http://www.parks.ca.gov/mediagallery/?page_id=607&viewtype=7 - The beach is a 5-10 minute walk away from your campsite and is very enjoyable due to the absence of large crowds and the serene atmosphere. An inland lagoon is situated between the protected sand dunes and the the beach. - They say the rip currents are strong and that swimmers should avoid wading out too far, but I saw plenty of surfers paddling out toward the horizon. You may see dolphins jumping out of the water. - Each site comes with a fire pit, and if you forget to bring firewood, you can buy some for $6 from a campsite host. - There's running water, bathrooms, and showers close to each site. The cold water taps in the showers are free, but two minutes of hot water costs 25 cents. It's best to have three quarters on hand when showering. - Bring booze, but remember to dump empty bottles/cans in the appropriate recycling bin. Leave the mj at home: too many kids are around. ==Cons== - The park staff has an odd system of choosing your campsite. You enter, drive around, and tell them what spots you desire. Often, by the time you drive back to tell them which spot you want, it'll be taken -- a lot of useless driving is required. - The showers may be out of service quite often. Some hot water dispensers may not work, so choose the showers that everyone uses. Bring shower shoes/sandals! - Bring your own toilet paper, as the park staff may not replenish it. Also, don't be surprised if people piss on the floor/toilet seats. - Since it's a fairly popular place, kids and RVs will likely be crawling all over the place. Peace and quiet may not be totally guaranteed until 10 pm when quiet hours are in effect.

If there was a way to leave zero stars I would. I'm an avid camper and this is by far the worst camp ground I've ever been to.

Some local beaches are starting to charge, but this one still offers PLENTY of free parking. In addition, there are multiple playgrounds - including a pirate galleon from when the park was established during my childhood, a THOUSAND years ago! It doesn't have the zip line that caused me to smash my leg into the concrete side, leaving a still visible scar 1,000 years later, which is probably for the best, but a kinder/gentler playground with more modern amenities for today's active child. There is also an expansive grass area, where you will find many local pups bounding about with joy. On the grassy areas, BBQs! Also a protected, man made beach cove with an easy enter, small to no wave water entry. Lots of families prefer to set up their space on the green grass and then make their way to the beach, which is an ideal way to have your picnic sand free! A foot shower is also available to rinse the beach off before you settle back onto your blanket. Plenty of benches, tables and a bathroom that is, if I'm being completely honest, acceptable, but could use an upgrade. If you're more active, make your way to the public dock to launch your kayak, paddle board, etc. I've also seen people fishing from this dock and launching remote control boats - so cute! If you haven't brought your own board or boat, there is a rental kiosk handily available. This is also a great park to stroll through. A clear path goes from the parking lot to the tip of the Ventura Harbor entrance, known as Soter Point, where a beautiful sculpture stands. When I think of the perfect beach park, I think of Marina Park in Ventura. Cheers! "CC"

I've spent countless mornings and afternoons here hiking, clearing my head, and getting a great workout in while still enjoying nature. The trails are well maintained with multiple options, so you can keep it light or make it more challenging depending on your mood. The views are beautiful, especially in the early morning or at sunset, and it never feels overly crowded. It has a calm, local Ventura vibe that I really appreciate. I've also brought kids I nanny here for walks and fresh air (sticking to the easier areas), and it's such a great space to reset. One thing to note: when it's hot, be cautious of snakes on the trails--proper shoes and awareness are important. If you're looking for a reliable, scenic place to hike in Ventura that locals truly love, Arroyo Verde Park is a must.

The highlight for me was the toddler playground. I work with children and often like to meet at parks to see their gross motor skills and work on them. This is one of the few parks left I have seen with sand. The park was very clean and even though there were many dogs off leash running around, pet owners were quite aware of where their dogs were and I didn't see any dog poop in the grass. You also can't beat that gorgeous ocean view. I came on a Friday late afternoon when they don't charge a park fee. Big plus!

It was on the coolish side, but the abundance of sunshine made it seem warmer. We had an early dinner down on Main Street. Where we parked there was a sign indicating that the eastern entrance to Grant Park was nearby. We had been up there perhaps only once in the past, and we'd gone in from the west. The drive up in the late afternoon / early evening had the golden glow magic to it. The light was amazing! I was driving and marveling at every twist and turn on the roadway while ascending the hills. The wildflowers and green groundcover from winter's rains made the scenery even more breathtaking than it might be when the grasses start to turn golden instead of green. I was able to drive all the way to the top parking lot, which overlooks the Serra Cross, and the entire Ventura coastline. The view encompasses the pier, the harbor, then beyond out to Channel Islands Harbor, Port Hueneme, and the western edge of the Santa Monica Mountains. It solidified my feelings in that moment of gratitude for enjoying life in Ventura County for the past 40 years. A gorgeous view on a clear day can do that for a person. When a sunny day happens, and the winds are calm, I can recommend taking a drive up to the top of Grant Park to make some of your daily cares seem very small. Looking down on the city / county from on high helped lift my spirits and added joy to my birthday celebrations.
