As a visitor to Halifax, McKelvie's is conveniently located near the wharf and in a great area to walk around and explore. The interior of the restaurant is cute - colourful painted murals on the wall, comfortable seating, and lots of space. They have an outdoor patio that looks cute as well (we didn't sit there though.) I visited in a group of four with very different food preferences: one vegetarian, one extreme foodie (me), one carnivore, and an 82-year old grandmother with a *somewhat* adventurous palate. We all managed to find what we were looking for (though our vegetarian didn't have many options.) We ordered one lobster roll, one seafood chowder, one order of crab cakes with side salad, one order of bacon wrapped scallops, oysters ($2 on Friday!) and vegetarian spring rolls. The lobster roll was excellent! The portion was on the smaller side but paired with the seafood chowder (a pairing I would highly recommend) it hit the spot. There was a hefty amount of lobster meat in the roll so I definitely feel it was worth it. The seafood chowder was creamy, chunky, and delicious. In every single spoonful I found a generous amount of seafood. It wasn't over salted, which I find can sometimes be an issue with chowders. I didn't personally have the crab cakes, side salad, and bacon wrapped scallops but I was told they were very good. The crab cakes in particular got rave reviews from my table. The oysters were fresh and delicious. Not much to report on those. The spring rolls were.... okay. They were really the only vegetarian option, and it was alright. I would really be hard pressed to say a vegetarian would be thrilled with this restaurant. Honestly, it's a seafood place. If you're looking for a great vegetarian meal, you've ended up at the wrong place. However, our very friendly server suggested some vegetarian restaurants in the area to try. Delicious seafood in Halifax. We had a very early dinner (right after they opened at 4 pm) so I can't say what the service might be like during regular meal hours. But our waitress was knowledgeable and attentive. I started with a cocktail - a Dark and Stormy, dark rum and ginger beer. I didn't really care for it, but that's on me, not the restaurant. My friend had a regular monitor, which she enjoyed. We shared fried calamari - very good but a very small portion - and the shrimp in butter and garlic - plump, sweet, garlicky and great. I had the crunchy halibut, a specialty of the house, and it was yummy. My friend had butter poached halibut, firm and flaky and delicious. We both ordered lobster mashed potatoes as a side but I'd skip them next time - nothing special and not very lobster-y. The seafood chowder had a nice texture however it was a bit on the salty side (it was still quite good). It had a mixture of salmon, scallop, shrimp and potato. I went to Nova Scotia with my family for a vacation and the concierge of our hotel recommended this place. It was walking distance and the food was okay. It was all great until I found pubes in my vegetables. I lost my appetite immediately. I didn't even want another plate because I didn't want to think of finding more pubes. Other than the hairs in my food (which I ended up not eating) the service was okay. Edit: I read through other people's reviews and I was not the only one who found hairs in their food. Horrible service! We sat down for what we thought would be a quick bite to eat... man were we wrong! We were seated as a party of 11 which almost broke the hosts' mind. Our waiter took our water orders and then spent around 15minutes at her other tables. After taking our orders our waters were empty for about 25minutes and we had no bread which was complimentary with all meals. After around 40minutes she offered us 6 slices of bread for 11 people and minutes later rushed us with appetizers and entrees. The only saving grace of this place is that the bread tasted good and the jambalaya has great flavor. Overall horrible experience. read more

Happiness and Love sums up my experience here at McKelvie's. After falling for the Warehouse Waterfront Restaurant (what local Yelpers refer to as one of their tourist traps) we decided to move on and try out the nearby McKelvie's and I'm glad we did. Not only did it satisfy our need to experience an authentic Nova Scotian dinner, their atmosphere and class made everything worthwhile. Starting us off, they gave us a breadbasket with soft butter and 3 slices of what appeared to be fresh homemade raisin bread! Yum! I ordered the Seafood Chowder, 6 oysters and a 1.5lb Lobster - I wish you all ate here with us because it was amazing! The seafood chowder had perfectly sized chunks of salmon, halibut and potatoes. This cream based chowder was full of flavour, was served at a good temperature. I would have ordered a second bowl if I didnt order the oysters. Their oysters were clean, fresh, and really really good! Served with some mild salsa and lemon wedges. Thank you for a great oyster experience; I normally don't eat them :) Then came the lobster and McKelvie's rescued my hopes and dreams that we're crushed less than an ago hour by the Warehouse Waterfront; I almost feel guilty tainting my McKelvie's review by mentioning that place, but alas it happened and I must not leave anything out of my road to discovering McKelvie's hahaha Back to the lobster! I uploaded some photos so please enjoy! I used the man sized bib haha otherwise i may look back one day and think I shoulda when i coulda! Really as good as it gets. Arrived on a Tuesday at 3pm to an empty restaurant. Server cheerful and welcoming. The highlights, the exectional complimentary bannick bread with soft butter, the best seafood chowder I have ever had and a perfect lobster roll with a touch of sauce with green onions and lettuce is a great touch. The server so proud of their product offered us a photo of where their lobster came from on her cell phone. I love Halifax, I wish everyone in Canada are this friendly. Simply the best lunch. Amazing food, Amazing service. James our waiter was honest and patient. My wife had the butter lemon poached halibut and I had the bacon wrapped scallops as well as the boiled lobster. My wife who has issues finding food that she can eat (allergies) in addition to food that she likes absolutely loved her halibut. My bacon wrapped scallops were excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed my lobster. Dinner was an absolute 10/10. After that we topped it off with dessert. My wife had the Sorbet and I had the Creme Brulee. We both enjoyed our dessert as well. Will definately stop here again in our future visits to Halifax. read more

My husband and I were visiting from Ontario and we wanted a nice lobster dinner in Halifax. This place did not disappoint. We had a delicious lobster and steak. The vibe is relaxed but hip and the decor is eclectic and interesting. I would recommend this place! My steak was a bit under cooked but the waiter noticed and gave me a free piece of coconut cream pie (which was to DIE for)! Firsts things first, If I could give this place a three and a half star review, I would. I came in at 8pm on the hunt for Halifax's famous lobster rolls, it was evidently hard to find any lobster rolls downtown at such an early time on a Friday night. My first choices were not open at this time so we came here as a backup plan. Reading the reviews on yelp, I expected to have a great lobster roll... what I got was a chunk of barren lobster on a cheap hot-dog bun. Considering I spent 24 Dollars on the roll I expected some type of hearty bun to hold up my meaty roll... however the cheap bun definitely did its job holding the below average amount of lobster. I was left hungry and dissatisfied. Overall, the roll was average, I would pass and try something else on the menu. As a side I ordered a relatively cheap cup of chowder.... however It was non traditional chowder so expect it to be less thick than conventional new england chowder and bits and pieces of salmon and shrimp along with the usual chowder ingredients like potatoes, haddock and cod. Not all restaurants can pull this type of chowder off but in this case it tasted great and is definitely a must try at this restaurant! The atmosphere and the way that the waiters conduct themselves fits in with the theme of high class simplicity that this restaurant tries to give off and is definitely very enjoyable. read more

We found McKelvies on Yelp and decided to check into it. We are glad we did. The restaurant is spacious and open. Serving staff were very friendly. And the food was amazing. Two of us had the crispy haddock which was by far the best "fish a d chips" we've had in the Maritimes. My husband had the seafood linguine and it was full of large scallops and shrimp and mussels. Desserts were delicious and worth every calorie. Would definitely recommend McKelvies. read more

Not a bad place, the food is actually quite good. However, prices are higher than they should be for what you are getting. Service seemed slow for return trips to the table but otherwise competent. Their seafood chowder was excellent, definitely recommend it. Their world famous lobster roll? Well as an expert in great lobster rolls... this is not what I would call great. It's was definitely good but the bun was over toasted and small. Hence not really a ton of lobster on there. But it definitely had a decent flavor and sweet lobster. For world famous I expect more of a knockout punch, overwhelming amount of lobster, softer bun or crazy good flavor. But still, not a bad one, just not stellar as they purport it to be. A side of scallops was quite good as was the salad. So overall you shouldn't have a problem getting a decent meal here. But I'll be keeping my eye out for someplace that brings more wow factor. My crab bisque would be better described as cheesy bisque or crab fondue. Didn't realize bisque had lots of cheese...or any cheese for that matter. The bowl serving of both chowder and bisque was more like large cup. Besides the food, crowds were small, server was excellent and noise level quiet. This place has a nice, family friendly atmosphere and is quaint, but the food is lack-lustre. The "Seafood A LA King" is anything but "Kingly." It appeared to be seafood chowder (with small bits of seafood) dumped out on a plate over a puff pastry. The liquid from the chowder made the puff pastry squishy and difficult to cut through. There were only 2 small scallops and 2 small shrimp, with the tails left on, (for the added crunch perhaps), and a bit of salmon on it. The presentation was lacking and the portion was small for the price. If you don't eat seafood on a regular basis, and don't prepare this type of cuisine yourself in your own kitchen, you may enjoy it. Also, for a seafood restaurant, the children's meals were lacking in the actual "fish department" unless you wanted deep fried "fish & chips." My child got this because there were no other options, other than pre-processed chicken fingers, but for a child who loves her seafood (salmon, lobsters, mussels, and scallops), she was very disappointed in the menu choices. The 4 options were disappointing for the price of $9.99. My child also complained immediately after that her tummy hurt, probably because of the grease. There's also a $1 upsell to eat healthy (salad) instead of having deep fried french fries. The food was just "okay" but nothing I couldn't have plated at my house, not for the price of $120+ for a family of 2 adults and 2 children. There was nothing wrong with the food, and it was cooked perfectly, but it definitely didn't "wow" me in the least. The tails that were left on the shrimp sealed the deal for me! read more

I love our meal here! We went on Vday, and were promptly greeted and seated. This is a comfortable resto with a relaxed atmosphere. The menu provided lots of choice, and the prix fix menu was a great deal! Our cod was delicious, maybe a little on the buttery side, but cooked to perfection. The side veggies were steamed properly and the lobster mashed potatoes were THE BEST thing I have ever eaten. They were not just lobster flavor, they had huge chunks of lobster mixed in! During a visit to Halifax last weekend, we ate at McKelvie's our first night here. It was great for a date with my wife when I brought her here 7 years ago. Eating here with four guys is a little weird when the environment is a little more romantic than a sports bar. But whatever. M.F. is correct. Older customers stared at us as if we had just crashed their wedding. And, here we were, four tourists! But it seems that the older clients and tourists have great taste. The service was excellent: they were very attentive, quick, and kind. I know McKelvie's is renowned for its sea food, but I was in a mood for filet mignon which was cooked perfectly. I ordered the filet mignon in the brandy sauce. It tasted delicious. The price is what you'd expect at a high end steak house or sea food restaurant. I promise I'll dress better next time. read more

Went here a few times this past summer, and although I found the prices a little bit inflated (I suspect they reap the benefits of tourist season greatly), ultimately I was always very satisfied. There are a variety of different styles and variations of seafood here, from traditional Nova Scotia fare to Asian and Indian inspired dishes, which gives plenty of options for just about any inclination. Despite the variety, the number of dishes is reasonable, the selection isn't overwhelming, and you know they're still able to offer fresh ingredients. As an aside, it's really funny but this was my nephew and niece's favourite restaurant when they came to visit this summer. They were really reluctant to go and practically had to be dragged away from going to a burger place, but once they were inside they absolutely loved it. I think what made it for them was the personable and entertaining waiter, who made it his business to make sure they had a good, fun time. read more

Robster! *that was not a typo :) We made reservations on a cold winter night to go and get our bellies warmed with some wonderful seafood. The restaurant is super cozy and we got a table in front of one of their beautiful big windows. What I really liked was that the menu was very well laid out, making it easy to decide the 10 different things we wanted off the menu! Realizing how our eyes eat, we decided to order with our stomachs. We really wanted to try the bacon wrapped scallops but opted for the house recommended calamari and crab bisque as our starters. The calamari was great and I enjoyed the dipping sauce but the crab bisque was not something I would run home to write on yelp about. For our mains we ordered one lobster dinner and one surf and turf. The lobster was succulent and exactly what we expected it to be. The sides were the perfect accompaniment: garlic mashed potatoes and crispy seasonal vegetables. By the end of eating all this, we packed away the juicy steak that came with the meal. Oh my gosh, how can I forget, I recommend trying the green tea lemonade! Very very refreshing! There was no room whatsoever to even smell what dessert could have been for our end to the evening as we were stuffed to the brim. Finally what makes the location of McKelvies so lovely is that you can walk on the waterfront right after you meal. We certainly needed a good LONG walk after that meal. I visited McKelvie's on my first ever visit to Canada back in October 2008, (I'm British, by the way) with my Canadian fiancé (who was then my boyfriend) and it made such a lasting impression on me that I still remember it as if it were yesterday! Firstly, I absolutely LOVE the location. Downtown Halifax is a gorgeous place to walk around and explore. The fact that the restaurant building is the old fire station makes it a really interesting dining space with it's high ceilings and huge arched windows. The tag line of the restaurant is "Delishes Fishes Dishes" and my, those fishes were certainly delishes!! The first time we went, we were practically the only ones in there and I explained to our server, Johnny (he was so lovely!) that I was interested in trying the famous Nova Scotia lobster because I'd never tasted lobster before as there's not a lot of it to be found in England. He took us over to the live lobster tank and explained how each one was priced according to weight. Then I chose my little guy and he was sent away to be boiled. The kitchen, like the rest of the restaurant is a very open space and I thought it was so cool that I could see my lobster being cooked! As a starter I had some amazing scallops wrapped in bacon and drizzled with maple syrup. It was heavenly! My first ever taste of lobster certainly lived up to expectations - I ate the whole thing and loved every bite. For dessert I had a pumpkin cheesecake which was amazing - I've never tasted anything like it before or since! The service by Johnny was second to none - very professional and polite. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we visited again towards the end of our trip. Johnny was our server once more and he seemed pleased to see us again - he even gave us each a glass of complementary local beer as a parting gift. If I'm ever back in Halifax, I'm definitely going to go back to McKelvie's for more lobster. Delishes! read more

We had eaten dinner at McKelvie's in the past, and decided to share this experience with our family for our wedding rehearsal dinner. Our reservation had been made months in advance, and even confirmed a few days before but when we arrived there was not any space set aside for our party. The staff made us feel like we were inconveniencing them by asking to be put together. Our orders were not even taken for almost half an hour after we had arrived, and I had to chase down the manager to even get staff to take our order. When they were told that they had forgotten to take my father's order the waiter rolled his eyes, and then took 15 more minutes to come back to take the order. After all of this our meals took almost another hour to arrive, and the manager had the gall to tell me that we should have reserved in advance! They treated us like we had given them trouble, and even when the meals started to arrive it was still at least another 15 minutes until everyone had their dinner. I was then literally pestered by the wait staff to encourage people to order dessert when all I wanted was to get out of the place. Our party had about 35 people in it, and when I went to pay we were told there was a 'required' 20% gratuity to be included. Normally I would have been fine to pay the 'required' amount, but for the poor service we received I was not willing to pay that. This was the only 'concession' that McKelvie's offered us (to not pay a gratuity), and not once did anyone apologize to us. I have not been back since, and make certain to let everyone know about the service we received that night. read more

Love love loved this place! My boyfriend and I made reservations here for Valentine's day and it was a very wonderful experience. The restaurant itself is nicely lit with professional servers and welcoming staff. The menu is large, with a variety of options and non-seafood options for meat lovers. I had the Digby scallops and my boyfriend had the filet mignon. Both were tender, delicious and satisfying. For dessert we had their signature chocolate, hazelnut cheesecake/mousse item (can't remember the name right now!) but it was FANTASTIC. Will be going back for sure! read more

The plating was nicely done. The steak is medium as I ordered, it tasted really juicy and premium sweet. The lobster was a bit small for the price, it was soft shelled so it was not really to get crazy about. My first experience was 2 years ago....I wasn't too impressed at that time, the food was too salty that night. I had the opportunity to be working in Halifax this week and came here for dinner again with a colleague. Tonight's experience was wonderful! It was a Monday night in November, they were not busy at all. We got seated right away, beside the window. The server brought over a basket of homemade cinnamon raisin bread, not warm, but not too bad, majority of places still don't know the importance of serving warm bread. I started with the NOVA SCOTIAN SEAFOOD CHOWDER, it was delicious! Made just right, the way I liked it. Not too salty, not overly thick, got lots of salmon, shrimp..chunky in the soup. For main, I asked for tender fish and the server suggested the haddock, so I picked the POTATO CRUSTED HADDOCK. It was so good! The fillet was pan fried, just cooked, very soft and flaky! The mash potato crust was crispy, it gives you the crispy texture of fish and chips, but a lot healthier! The garnish is very simple, just a few boiled pepper, broccoli and a few slice of zucchini, seasoned with salt/butter. I didn't order any desserts....maybe next time. McKelvie's is a nice, upscale-casual restaurant near (but not on) the Halifax waterfront. Mike and I have tried many of their dishes over the past few years and none has disappointed. This weekend we had their steak, and while it was a bit overpriced it was very good, tender and tasty. Service is hit or miss I find; although I've never had bad service here, this time our server seemed a bit distracted and not as attentive as he should have been. McKelvie's has lovely desserts as well. This time out I had a chocolate velvet cake with French vanilla ice cream (YUM) and Mike had chocolate cheesecake. Both were fabulous. Definitely high on our list of great downtown restaurants; however, for us it really is a treat to visit as the prices are a bit high. read more

First things first. If you even remotely like seafood, order the mussels. They will arrive in a tin bucket, floating in several inches of wine, butter, and garlic and interspersed with real herb sprigs and lemon wedges. Not only do they look great, they taste phenomenal. Secondly, if you want a moment of indulgent bliss, order the crab bisque. Hiding under a melted disc of sharp parmesan is a velvety and decadent bisque with tasty chunks of crab. It's probably one of my favourite things there, next to the Aqua pasta dish. I've been here a few times for lunch. It's fancier (aka pricier) than my usual haunts, but it has some decently priced lunch items and the service is kicked up for speed. I love the wrought iron sculptures of underwater scenes and the bright, airy atmosphere of the restaurant. In a city crawling with seafood joints, it's a nice option. read more

Even though we were directed there by the staff of our hotel, who claimed it was not a tourist trap, I am not entirely satisfied with the experience. I like food. I love big portions. That was not the case with any of our orders. Crab cakes were only two and not quite big. Lobster roll was gone in two bites, although it was good. They offered several of their wines at half the price. Mainly whites, they go better with fish or seafood, and they do so because most of them are from 2013 so they need to go (never accept a white wine that is more than two years old). The bottle we chose, a Riesling from Niagara, was pretty good still. Chowders were flavorful and the service was extraordinary. Yet, I was hungry not too long after, hence the three stars. read more

Then I put on my lobster bib, and started the breakdown process of devouring the whole lobster. YUM. The lobster was tender, sweet, with lots of meat. Great dinner, and would go back again, for sure! Housed in an historic fire station , McKelvie's is essentially a seafood restaurant with a few chicken/beef entrees to satisfy a dinner partner who doesn't like seafood. I've eaten here many times in the 90s when I was on the expense account and McKelvies was a fine dining experience for seafood lovers and business guests. We walked down Bedford Row in the windy end of Superstorm Sandy. I had the special crab stuffed haddock with a light cheese topping. It was devine with complex light flavour and almost dry flaky texture. The risotto was too much of a garlic clump and the asperagus tips looked less than delicate but tasted good. She had the goat cheese stuffed chicken which she called heavenly. I tried a piece - it was well seasoned, a unique flavour.
