Their web page states (see quote below) they provide prescription compounding. So, I took my prescription that needs compounding to them, but was immediately told, "we don't do compounding." They didn't even look at the prescription. It's not my particular prescription, they don't compound any prescriptions. Why then have a sizable write-up under "services" offered? I recently switched from CVS to McKinney's Pharmacy based on the great reviews I saw in my neighborhood group and women's health page. I appreciate the positive feedback and the convenience they offer, but I believe their communication could be improved. One of the main reasons I switched was to avoid the hassle of calling in prescriptions and to enjoy seamless delivery. While the first refill went smoothly after calling to ask for delivery, I had to call them on the second refill to remind them about my delivery request. Currently, their communication is limited to text messages--no email confirmations--which can make recordkeeping and updates a bit challenging. I was surprised to receive a text requesting payment on my next refill because, starting this month, there's a $6 DELIVERY FEE! It would have been helpful if this change had been communicated earlier, especially since I had called just a few days ago. If I hadn't already invested time switching to McKinney's, I might have stayed with Edgewood CVS, which offers free delivery. That said, I hope this delivery fee will ensure my prescriptions arrive automatically moving forward. read more

Once upon a time a nice guy named Doug and a fabulous staff occupied a lovely little apothecary in downtown Decatur. Then mysteriously, the staff and owner disappeared and what happened was nothing short of the Twilight Zone... The replacements were nothing like the beloved group before. They asked a lot of personal questions, seemed suspicious, and really pounded in all of the laws and the ways that they themselves could meet their end. I have been to a lot of independent pharmacies (Ira's will always be EPIC), but not those that hold a communist-era level of paranoia about medications. DRUGS. HABITS...SUSPECTS, Oh my! We were even told that all of our prescriptions needed to be filled there. The problem with that things happen on the weekends, and this new pharmacy doesn't open on weekends. Doug has a pharmacist on-call for emergencies. It's rather condescending isn't it? Many of us are widely educated that visit this apothecary but the interactions with the actual pharmacists would say otherwise. Rule of thumb I guess...don't trust anyone to know themselves or their proper medications. My family's family practice doctors are fed up with having to call them for the slightest things instead of being professional pharmacists they want to talk to the doctor all of the time. The doctor writes prescriptions for the pharmacy to fill. That is their job, But if they can complicate it, they want to talk to the doctor. I don't know how they stay in business because they are only open 40 hours a week! One of our doctors is pretty fed up and wants the practice to change over to other pharmacies too. I wanted to see if it was just a clash but I heard that many complaints are coming into the office. They will spout out rules that other pharmacies won't bother you with. Our family knows the rules already but we are treated like we've just gotten back from cave painting with our clan. We wish the old owner would come back. I know that won't happen, so we are looking for a new pharmacy that carries our diverse meds, instead of being prodded and poked when we're just as busy as they are!!! I guess they must have a ton of customers that leave it unimportant to answer messages or delivery good customer service. The regular tech staff is fantastic. The pharmacists, not so much. read more

I love that this place has continued calling itself an apothecary after all these years. They even have some pharmaceutical symbols on display that were around when medicine was a little more mystical (e.g. show globes--glass containers with colored liquid, it helped illiterate people know it was a pharmacy back in the day)! Ever since I aged-out of my parent's insurance plan, I've been navigating the waters of a PPO-type insurance and McKinney's made it super easy for me to get my month prescriptions. Not having any idea of the process, I called McKinney's one day and literally started the call with, "I have no idea what I'm doing." The woman who answered my call was very friendly and collected some medical and health insurance information and said she would call me back when my prescription was ready for pick-up. After about an hour, she called me back and said she had my medication in stock so I can pick it up whenever is convenient. I stop by once a month. Luckily, I live down the street and I can easily fit this place into my dog-walking route. Originally, I tied him outside while I quickly grabbed the meds, but the lady at the counter allowed me to come inside with my dog (she even gave my pup a treat) since I was quickly going in-and-out for a pick-up. Someone ALWAYS picks up the phone really quickly here, which I definitely appreciate. Even when I told my doctor I pick up my meds at McKinney's she said, "Oh! I love the people that work there. Someone always answers." Walking in to the store I feel like this is true southern hospitality. Instead of going to a boring, dime a dozen CVS, I recommend getting your medications here. They aren't 24/7 like CVS, but the feeling that you're supporting a community business combined with its history make this a unique place to make your monthly errands a little less mundane. read more

I arrived at McKinneys after I had finally had enough with the Ponce CVS down the street. The Ponce CVS constantly had embarrasingly long wait times and had surly, unhelpful staff. Not once, but TWICE, the CVS gave me wrong prescription info, which is a shocking recipe for disaster. But, forget them! McKinney's is home. I notice there are no recent reviews, and wanted to say that McKinney's is still around, giving A++ pharmacy service! They are friendly, get to know you, and offer fantastic, quick service. You can put your credit card on file with them, too, which means you have an account there and can pick up medications really quickly. Also, I believe you can park for free in the garage located right next to the store. So, why four stars instead of 5, you ask? The non-pharmacy part of the store is really sad looking. Very empty, with just a few items on the shelves. I wish they would try stocking something rather than having one or two of every drugstore item (toothpaste, etc). It makes people think the store is always on the verge of closing, but they seem to be doing well. Seems like the space could be put to better use. read more

Stepping into McKinney's Apothecary is like stepping back in time-- to a small town where everyone knows your name, and where you can buy a malted from a soda jerk at the pharmacy. Sadly, the Apothecary lacks a soda fountain. On the other hand, this is hands down the best pharmacy I've ever been to. The pharmacists get to know you, and seriously know their stuff. This is a throwback to old-school community pharmacy, where they know your name and treat you as a patient, and not just as a cashier. Their knowledge is top-notch, and any time I've asked a nerdy/ridiculous question, they'll look it up and get back to you. I'll go out of my way to get my prescriptions filled here (especially since I don't have that many), and I'll even buy their random other stuff whenever I can (even if their batteries are a bit more expensive than CVS), simply because this place is awesome. read more

I had tried filling my RX at Walmart and I did not have insurance. Both times, they had me wait 203 hours and they quoted me a total of $86 for both Rxs. I stopped here because I had to kill time as I waited for a client, and decided to grab a Bday card. I never thought of asking for the RX there, I assumed it would copst more, being an "apothecary" in a fancy building, but they certainly hooked me up! they were very friendly, and it took 5 minutes for my RX to get filled. How rare it is to find a true small local business where you feel always welcomed and experience true southern hospitality. The staff are so personable and friendly. They will answer any questions that I have, silly as they may be. They also offer local delivery for a small fee (excellent for when I can't get out of the house with the kids). These guys are quick, close to the center of Decatur, easy to park near, and much less expensive than CVS who wanted to charge me $62 for a Rx that was filled at McKinney's for $12. Alas, there came a huge issue with customer service awhile back. Had a prescription for a new medicine on the market. They kept screwing it up with me having to call the company that makes the drug to get the correct information. Bottom line McKinney's overcharged me $146 and the owner never would discuss the situation with me. Maybe $146 is not a lot of money for Doug but it is for me. Will not be back. read more

I just had to add my bit to the praise for McKinney's Apothecary. I had been using Wal-Mart (over an hour wait is standard just for them to tell you they haven't been able to contact your insurance yet--average for my prescription with their discount about $215), Walgreens (have to pay for a discount card and also long waits--average for my prescription with their discount about $215) and CVS (much more expensive than the others and also long waits--average there about $265), so I decided to give McKinney's a try. To my astonishment, they had my order ready in less than five minutes and they not only worked with my difficult insurance company but also took another program I was inquiring about so that I got my prescription for *free*! Now *that's* service! I can't recommend them highly enough. read more

McKinney's - specifically DOUG - is a throwback to a time when merchants knew who you were, cared about you, and gave old fashioned advice. They always try to accomodate, deliver for a very small fee, and the prices are comparable to any of the drugstore chains. All the staff at McKinney's are absolutely the best. We got introduced to them as our dog needed a compounded medicine. They ask about our pup every time we're in and even asked us to bring her by one day so they could meet her! During "snowjam" their voicemail had information about when prescriptions would be filled and worked hard to keep caught up. They personally call you with questions. This pharmacy reminds me of the way businesses used to be. I highly recommend them and love the fact they are in downtown Decatur. read more

Truly amazing. The staff practically knows each customer by name and pays particular attention to their medical needs. Our baby had an ear infection on miserably cold / rainy day, they actually called the house and offered to deliver the Rx so my wife wouldnt have to take the baby out in the rain....beat that Walgreens.... also - they probaly have 1/2 the staff of the chain stores and will fill your Rx in 10 min... never been told to come back in 45 min - hour like the routine at CVS/Walgreens. read more
