I went to McKinnon's two weeks ago to stock up on meat and I got more than enough to fill my freezer for a good price. I noticed that some of the meat I normally get was absent and I was not happy. They had no lamb steaks or blade steak the day that I went. Their oxtails were far from the quality I prefer. I got what looked good and smiled on my way home, but when I went to separate the meat to put it in the freezer, my pack of pork strirfry was bad. I do not mean "oh my let's rinse this crazy scent off" bad, but "OMG let's fumigate the entire house" bad. UGH. I know I will be back, but I am still mad at them for ruining my chances at a bomb-ass Asian spicy pork dish I planned on making. read more

This place is great... from the amazing selection in the deli to the meats, chicken and seafood choices, the pre-made foods to the small produce section. Even the small market.. which maybe a tad more expensive than the big stores, but living practically across the street I do most of my shopping here. Meat, meat, and more meat. McKinnon's is the perfect alternative to your grocery store meat cooler. This little four aisle grocery store is primarily a butcher and deli. Every cut of cow under the sun is available, along with seafood, chicken, pork and other random meats. Where else can you buy a whole skinned rabbit? They offer pre-marinaded selections. They also carry other food, enough to construct a whole meal to go along with your block of cooked meaty goodness. The vegetables, however, are not always top quality. I think their original marinade steaks are phenomenal. I relocated south of Boston and I try to stock up every time I am on the North shore.

McKinnons has treated me well over the years. I'm definitely a fan of their marinated steak tips, which are on sale for $4.88 lb.!! I love the original and the budweiser marinades. The marinated chicken is also good, really juicy and always fresh. I recently tried the marinated london broil steak and i fell in love, you just can't beat the tenderness or the flavor. Just about everything i've tried has been great, and the service is quick but thorough. I went in the other day looking for a new york sirloin holiday roast but they didnt have the exact size i wanted. I asked the butcher and within 5 minutes they cut one and brought out exactly what i wanted. So, if you don't see what you're looking for, just ask! Also, i'm a fan of the mckinnons deli. They have great prices on boar's head meats, and a lot of 99% fat free chicken breast (tons of flavors). Land o lakes american cheese is usually at a good price here too. I keep giving this store another chance, and everytime I do, it's disastrous. I have had to return meats to them at least 3 times. Bought shredded parmesean only to find it moldy just 2 days after purchase. Each time I returned meats/cheese, no questions are asked, its almost like it's no surprise to them. I don't ever buy meat from the grocery store anymore. Their meat is better and costs about half as much as in the store. For other items though I do stick to the big grocery stores because often times things that are name brand are a little more expensive here. But they always have weekly deals that the big grocery just can't beat, and their cheese is really cheap, and tastes great! And I'm a really picky shopper. The smell does get to me but it's not as bad in Everett as it is at the Somerville store. And the staff is really great. You can get a whole rotisserie chicken for 5 bucks! Love love love this place! My boyfriend and I love to cook (and eat) so grocery shopping is one of our favorite activities. We used to go to Lord Jeff (if you don't know about Lord Jeff then you don't need to know) for cheap prices, but the place smells disgusting and the beef had a funny taste. Anyway we stumbled upon McKinnons in Somerville and were semi-impressed and then found the location in Everett when we moved to Revere. This place is a true gem! The quality of meat is superb and the prices are unbeatable! We haven't tried much of the marinated or prepared things, but what we have tried has been good. They do not get five stars because the deli is not great, the prices for non-meat items are a bit high, and parking is scarce. read more

Brought my mom here to buy a roast for Christmas. My mom told me that she did not want a beef roast with a bone in it, and she wanted a tender piece of non bottom beef. I did not get a top piece but a tip piece, which I was told by the staff was tender enough, and would not bankroll my mom's account. Also bought some sweet potatoes, butter, bottled gravy, and canned rolls. I would stick with the meat at this place if you could. They have ready to cook poultry, beef, and pork, in many different marinades. You are not paying for the surroundings in this place but the meat. Not the best meat you can buy, but for the money, not bad. Quality just as good as the chain supermarkets, and you will save money, or at least I think you are at first glance. There used to be one in Davis Square. Not sure it is still open, in that I used to live in Davis Square, but I bought meat at Whole Foods in Cambridge often. read more

McKinnons has delicious cuts of meat at reasonable prices. Produce prices are decent, but freshness is very hit-or-miss. The choice and price of other groceries is less desirable. It is incredibly small inside, with one insanely cramped aisle at the end. The customer service is AWFUL. I have heard many deli counter employees mocking / making fun of customers. Cashiers are typically apathetic teenage girls who will ring you up without looking at you or speaking to you. read more

They used to be considered good until I found Bob's in Medford. Ten times better and cheaper. McKinnon's is overpriced and I find it strange that they only have young white high school students working there. They charged me $8/lb for Steak Tips! I bought produce from there that went moldy in 2 days! I live a block down, but would rather make the trip to Medford...and McKinnon's coldcuts are definitely overated. They don't even carry calamari (when they do it's frozen)...oh no us Italians need FRESH squid! The rostierri chicken is definietly better at BJ's or Costco. I recently found out the mckinnons in somerville is not the same as everett. I can see why. i frequent the somerville store but will never go back. i walked in to the Everett Mckinnons by chance. Wow what a difference. The store is clean doesn't smell the employees are friendly and very helpful. one employee even gave me a little history. I will have to check out the other stores in Danvers, Ma and Salem NH. Oh by the way Boneless chicken 159 lb. and The Rib Eye Steaks were to die for. and if you dont want to cook. check out there prepared food section. The McKinnons Meat Market in Everett used to be like the Somverville until it was completely renovated. However, the meat was always fresh. The same with Demoulas Market Basket in Chelsea. However, perceptions of store floors, walls and general store cleanliness do not equal to food freshness and quality. A common misunderstanding. Remember, what you see is just that. I would rather eat fresh and shop in a store that does always look 100% perfect all the time than eat food that does not sell fast. In other words, the priority in food stores---freshness; I don't plan on eating the floor or walls. I want the food fresh. High traffic in stores equates to fast selling of food, constantly replaced with fresh food. Fresh food is best food. Then again, if you value appearance as perception above all else, go with that....just don't cry over the spoiled milk you got from that constantly pristine looking store. read more

For a while now I've been saying Mckinnons meat has gone downhill, and after what I found today, I don't see me shopping there again anytime soon. Even though it wasn't on a meat product, this could be a good indication. I found 2 labels on a container of cole slaw, pulled it off to see the top label expiration was 01.01.15 and the bottom label expiration was 12.20.14. A 12 day difference. Really McKinnons? IT'S COLE SLAW! It can't cost that much to make that you couldn't afford the loss if it didn't sell. read more

My wife has shopped at McKinnon's for over thirty year's. Lately, the items we purchased have not been of the same high quality we're accustom to. I have over twenty year's of experience in the Market and Grocery businesses, I know it's all about the the knowledge and expertise of the person who purchases the meats. What's prompted me to write this review, was the worse T-Bone steak I've ever encountered. A boiled boot couldn't be any tougher and would at least have some kind of flavor. Our steak knives which were recently sharpened, strained at cutting through this sorry piece of meat. My cat wouldn't eat it, my wife couldn't finish it and I'm sorry that I did. I expect this at certain grocery chains, which is why we avoid meat from certain ones. I really a hard time accepting it from a place like McKinnon's however. This meal just isn't sitting right and it'll be quite some time before we go back to spend good money on "Old Boot Leather." read more
