It wasn't my preferred type of beer, but I found it tasty and refreshing. The next morning at breakfast at a restaurant in town, there were small signs on the table for their beers. So that afternoon, I went to Liar's Bench for lunch. I appreciate the messages the universe had sent me. Apart from a challenge getting parking at lunchtime, with several spots in the lot reserved for nearby Murray's Plumbing, there's much to like about Liar's Bench (and that's no lie). The beer selection is varied enough that I was able to get a very satisfying flight. My local friend had suggested I order whatever was the chef's special of the day (which today was a specialty burger), but we instead opted for the BBQ platter for 2, with a large amount of pulled pork, slaw, potato salad, and Texas toast. We sat at the bar and had great service and conversation. I can see why this is a popular lunch destination. Another bonus for me is that Liar's Bench is the closest brewery to a hotel at which I often stay when I'm in Portsmouth, making this a new destination for me when I'm in the area.

The place was not busy around 4pm on a cold weekday afternoon. I was greeted by the owner and I sat down at a table near the bar as upbeat pop and hip-hop music was pumping over the speakers. I quickly looked over the menu and ordered the Steak & Cheese Sub ($17 plus tax) and Macaroni & Cheese side ($6 plus tax). The food was prepared fresh to order and quickly served. The Steak & Cheese Sub had plenty of thin sliced grilled steak, topped with sauteed onions, peppers, and melted American cheese on a soft slightly chewy sub roll, ketchup bottle provided. The Macaroni & Cheese side was a pretty good bowl portion, soft cooked cavatappi pasta smothered in a hearty 3-cheese sauce. I thoroughly enjoyed my food and ice water as I watched sports highlights on the TV near the bar. After I was all set, a portable Square POS handheld unit was brought over with the total $24.96 with tax and before tip, paying with card. All Square transactions are automatically emailed to me based on the card used. Overall, tasty food at a fair price for Downtown Portsmouth. I will have to come back here to try their steak tips dinner. They are also open late on Thursday-Saturday until 1 am.

But watching the staff interact before we were even seated made me feel like this whole restaurant moved as one dancing unit. And guess what? I was right. We were seated in the bar area with amazingly soft pillows and even bigger smiles. We decided from the start that we were sharing everything--and what a delicious decision that was. On the docket: Harissa Roasted Carrots -- WOW. Lightly charred carrots that practically melted in your mouth.
