Baked goods here are amazing, and I love the unique offerings they have for cupcakes especially. The coffee and matcha are good as well, and the breakfast and lunch items I have tried have always been decent if not great. It's on the pricier side for food -- a coffee and breakfast burrito could be close to $15. But, the interior is cute and customer service here is generally good. I used to love this location but I feel like it went downhill.. either that or the McLain's location off of Roe is just that much better. The location off Roe (and yours) has the chicken finger snack. At the location on Roe it's freaking incredible. The coffee bbq sauce is next level.. but at the Lawrence location it's overly greasy and the chicken is shaped weird. You also didn't give me the coffee bbq and that made me wanna cry. Also I know Lawrence has a bag ban but pleaseeeee give paper bags. I don't like my crappy chicken strips or girl breakfast flying around my car Also not great matcha. I really like your lattes and cake though! I never go inside because it's too crowded.. so obviously you're doing something right when the inside gets so full. Also love the vibe. I like McLains and that bothers me quite a bit. The atmosphere is nice, the pastries are very good and it's a nice place to hang out. The food, though, isn't that great for the price. It's too pricey for the quality. The location is nice and I do like the interior. It is fashioned to be very neo-quaint (I made that up). Everything is very eye catching and pleasing. They sell t-shirts, caps, dry tea and coffee. You can get all sorts of knick-knacks at this restaurant. The food is order at the counter style and they bring it to your table. I was here with a friend and we told the cashier we were eating in the restaurant. The funny thing is they brought us all disposable utensils. People at other tables had glass drinking cups but we had paper. Very odd and my friend was not too happy about us being singled out in this manner. I love biscuits and gravy and I thought the McLain's version was both good and bad. The biscuits and gravy were good but it came with a scrambled egg and hash browns. They were terrible. Microwave oven best. They don't give you a choice of egg- which is telling. You automatically get scrambled. I guess that's the best the microwave could off up. The total price on the biscuits and gravy and microwaved scrambled egg and hash browns was almost $10. Not worth it at all. My friend had the Farmer sandwich. It looked good and it was very big but my friend was unimpressed. All the items on their menu seemed overpriced. Bottom line for me is that it's just OK, nothing special. The restaurant is easy to access and visually appealing. There are no issues with staff and everyone seemed pleasant enough. I just think this place could be better. read more

Had them make my wedding cake and cupcakes. I chose them because they offered a gluten free option and it was affordable and tasted great. They also let us do a cake tasting for free with their mini cupcakes. A lot of people and places jack up their prices when they hear it's for a wedding and I am so happy this business doesn't do that. Just finished our off cake for our 1 year anniversary and it was still delicious even after being frozen for a year!! 10/10 would recommend. read more

McLain's is a favorite brunch and coffee spot for me. The market latte is second to none. They list their ingredients for it, but it's greater than the sum of its parts. The farm sandwich with its poblano sauce is top notch. I've gotten good service here. read more

Stopped here recently for lunch and a sweet treat. I ordered the grilled cheese and tomato soup. The soup was a major disappointment. First of all it was barely lukewarm. I don't think it was soup. The consistency and taste was of a marinara sauce. It was unlike any soup I had ever had. The grilled cheese was a mess. I will never order that again. The sugar cookies were good. I concur with the Yelp community that this is a three star destination. The facility itself was a former chain that dealt in some kind of chicken products, like they weren't enough of them already in town. The atmosphere is pleasant and inviting and there's a large patio which is getting most of their business during the pandemic. Two things already kind of a big turn off for me about this location: almost total absence of mask wearing by the staff. I'm aware this is optional but the brazen don't care attitude is more than I wish to tolerate. We got vegan wraps and at $9.50 apiece plus tax I felt that they were somewhat overpriced. They came with what looked like housemade potato chips, good enough. The wrap itself was not bad but generally uninteresting, and certainly not much thought put in the plate presentation. For a $20 plus meal, not impressed. Also, we ended up going back inside to get our own silverware and napkins even though a wait person came to our table outside. Oh well. So kind of like the location on campus, overall I'm underwhelmed with what this company is doing in Lawrence. I wish them luck but I don't think I would revisit this location read more

I've had some really great food at McClain's. Sadly, it's just so darned inconsistent that I'm about to give up. Today I picked up a Mediterranean salad and found that it was missing two ingredients (red onions and kalamata olives). The other day I had the same salad (complete with all the ingredients, tasted fabulous) and added avocado, but the up charge was significant (I forget exactly how much) and consisted of one lone, thin slice of avocado. The first time I had the breakfast sandwich it was the best thing I'd ever eaten but the next time I ordered it, it had no jalapeño cream cheese. A few weeks ago I tried the chicken/bacon wrap, but it came without the BBQ ranch and was flavorless and dry. I was eating in, so I went back to the counter to ask for some, and they gave me a cup of some pale soupy stuff that was too liquid to go in or on the wrap and tasted unpleasant and weird besides. This is a nice cafe/bakery. It looks stylish on the inside, the service is kind and helpful. I haven't experienced any problem having eaten there. It's a good place to be or connect with family and friends, while enjoying a nice beverage or food item too. The place is a little on the small side, but it's still comfortable enough. They have reusable plastic cups that you can serve yourself water with. Their baked goods are quite delicious. Their beverages and food are pricey compared to their quality. There are other coffeeshops and bakeries better than this place in Lawrence. I was at their branch near (KU campus) yesterday, and the owner towed my car while enjoying my coffee at his cafe. When I called him and explained what happened, he said, this is my parking lot, and I can tow any car I want because it's my property. He did this unprofessional and absurd action because he did not find a parking spot for his car. Just imagine that he does this to his loyal customers. read more

The space is beautiful and clean. Clean nice bathrooms, as well, which I feel is always a marker as to how the kitchen rolls. They also have multiple restrooms, which is nice in a coffee shop! The coffee is delicious! The cinnamon rolls and other pastries are delicious, too. The menu overall for entrees is the reason I'm giving this place only 4 stars. I've had about 4 things on the menu. It feels for the flavor of the food, it's way overpriced. I used to live in Brooklyn, NY and pay similar prices at cafes there and get way more flavor for your money. The quiche is a safe choice here, which at times they run out of quickly. The French toast is, ehhh. If you like your French toast super sweet, go for it. The Reuben sandwich seemed like more bread than anything else. Per coffee menu, the iced lattes are superb! The hot lattes are very yummy, as well! I order mine with oat milk and a half pump of vanilla. The water station on the side is a nice offering! The cinnamon rolls are on my 5 star list, too! 90% of the time, the staff has been extra gracious and very accommodating! Stick to the coffee, pastries and/or quiche and soak up the good vibes! Oh, and the cakes look beautiful! I've never tried one, but if you need a birthday cake or some celebratory cake, they usually have some in various sizes in their case. read more

Great service, good coffee, and cookies, and a side range of food options, but horrible hours. They close at 2 on the weekends but their hours do not show on the drive thru menu, I went on a Saturday and a Sunday both times around 2pm they were closed and there were multiple vehicles behind me for the drive thru. Good thing Starbucks has great hours, they had about 10cars in the drive thru at 3pm, McLains is missing out on great business with their horrible weekend hours.
