Like many things in life, MHF is a yin/yang grab bag of great and not-so-great. Pros: -MHF is a five-ten minute ride from my office in Tyson's and I can get in and out during lunch. I normally see Hilda, who is fantastic. She does a great job on cut and color, is very pleasant, and can always get me in and out in time - without feeling rushed. -The prices are lower than the many high-end studios in the area - likely due to the very dated, somewhat dingy interior. They would definitely benefit by even some small-scale interior upgrades. A new coat of paint and some updated stations would go a long way to improve the aesthetic here. -This week I had a small window of time on a day that Hilda was not available so I was seen by Julie, who I understand is new. She was fantastic and very stylish; I had a cut, blow-out, and straightening that looked twice the price of $33, plus tip. -There was a Groupon, but they will honor the price without you actually buying the Groupon. Cons: The last time this place saw an interior refresh, Richard Nixon was president. You won't feel like you are stepping into some posh salon, but then again - you won't be paying for the aesthetics either. In my experiences there, the products and tools have always been current and hygienic. -The ladies are a mix of ethnic heritages and some have thick accents but I've never actually had any real communication challenges. Overall, I'm a Warren Buffet value investor - I look for what's undervalued and do not pay for frills I don't need (paint and fancy decor do not add value to my hair services). She did Victoria Beckham's hair style, and it looked amazing on my daughter. Sarah is very welcoming and my daughter feels very comfortable. Bought a mani-pedi on Groupon and my found my whole experience to be so UNSANITARY. The woman who did my sets was friendly and chatty. However, she did not wear gloves as she massaged and scrubbed my feet. The tools looked used and weren't un-sanitized, and the towels were stained. The nail polish selection was also severely lacking - maybe 15 colors from OPI mostly in shades of red and pink. She asked me to help open two bottles of clear base coat bottles for her because they were SEALED SHUT from infrequent use. My feet were poorly scrubbed and were left quite flaky. The manicure was subpar and a bit messy on the edges. I will not be coming back. read more

DO NOT EVER GO TO THIS PLACE! This establishment is seriously a joke. I called to make an appointment for a gel mani and pedi. My appointment was set for 3:00, but around 1:30 someone called me to ask if I would be able to come earlier. I said I can make it at 2:30 and was there right on time. When I got there, the nail lady immediately told me that I need to hurry up and pick a color because she didn't have a lot of time because she had another appointment. Obviously, I was very put off by this, but I didn't want to be rude so I said okay. When I asked her where the gel polish were, she told me that she can't do gel because she had another appointment. I told her that when I made the appointment, I asked to get gel. She said the receptionist "probably didn't understand you." After 10 mins of frustrating back and forth, I decided to simply walk out. What a bait and switch! I purchased a Groupon and called to book an appointment. They said that they no longer take Groupon but would honor the price. I got there and verbally confirmed the situation. They said that they could only charge me... DOUBLE.....what?! I explained that when I confirmed on the phone they checked with the owner who said they would honor the Groupon price but when I arrived they basically said they had changed their minds. Since I went out of my way for the appointment they wasted a lot of my time with their bait and switch. I will gladly pay more for a better, cleaner more trustworthy salon. Hilda is a sensational hair colorist, stylist and the only person I will trust now with my hair! After going to E.A. for ~12 years, my stylist totally discolored my hair leaving it dark, mud brown...2 days before I had to fly out to present to an audience of 5,000. In desperation, I went to Hilda to fix it. She was calm, cool, professional and a true perfectionist. She did full highlights, trimmed and styled my VERY curly hair to look like sun kissed silk. First off: Some really good things about this place-I got in very last minute, same day, for an appointment and then showed up late due to bad traffic, and still was able to keep my appointment. The price was pretty affordable. The hair stylist was pleasant and I walked out with a big bag of free bagels that they were kind of enough to share after being donated by the Chesapeake Bagel folks in the store next door. Things that could have been better: My hair cut and style that she gave me was nothing exciting but was Ok. The store owner that other Yelpers mentioned was a bit brusk and seemed very displeased with me between my cheapness with Groupon, showing up late and not realizing I had to have cash only for a tip. and it made the experience slightly less pleasant. No one else was in the salon, it was totally empty (thankful I got in at all in this case) It looked more like a run-down, no frills salon/barber shop inside and made me slightly concerned I might get a really bad cut initially, even though it wasnt. The hair brushes they had out were all used and filled with other people's hair that she used to comb through my hair. I didn't say anything about this but it was pretty disconcerting. I purchased a groupon for a Keratin treatment, and I cannot stress enough that you get what you pay for. When I arrived to the salon, I was greeted by a very polite lady who welcomed me even though I got there a few minutes late and my appointment was at 5:30PM. I was then seated with a different lady and that's where it all went downhill. She started complaining by telling me that she had already left for the day and that she had to come back because of me. She repeated the same thing AT LEAST 10 times. Then when she washed my hair (I have very curly hair and to those who have it, know that curly hair is actually very delicate) and didn't bother on conditioning which is a must. She then brushed out the knots in a very aggressive manner that actually gave me a headache which is a first for me. Throughout the appointment she also repeated that she had to come back just because of me and that they don't even receive any money from groupon so they rely on tips and that we (as customers) needed to tip her well. Now, im not a stingy tipper but when I get bullied into tipping someone, that is not ok. Then she went on to start badmouthing her coworker who was doing the nails for another customer. The whole appointment was a disaster! Then as we are getting to the end of my appointment, her coworker had finished doing her customers nails and she basically started kicking her out (the customer), so my stylist stepped in and told the customer that if she wanted to stay for a bit for her nails to dry it was fine. Then the other employee went on to start arguing with her telling her to basically mind her own business in front of me and the other customer. I was ready to leave at that point, Then I went on to the register to pay and I left her 15% of the total amount and she made a very unpleasant remark and tried to get me to leave her a higher tip. 1.5 stars. I bought a groupon for mani-pedi. I'm unable to remember the lady's name but she was a middle aged woman from Turkey. Sanitation was almost zero and nail polish selection was very limited (15 nail polishes max). The lady had a difficult time doing my pedicure but did a decent job overall. My manicure was a different story. My cuticles were barely removed, there was nail polish outside of my nails and she barely paid any attention while doing my nails as she kept talking and talking. Nice lady but definitely not a natural at doing nails. If I had to pay full price for the services I got, I would have walked out but for $28 it was okay but I could do a better job at home. The biggest problem was the sanitation. Towels looked dirty even though they seemed washed and she did not use gloves. I don't think the tools were well sanitized either. When I went to pick a nail polish color, I chose 3 different colors and she told me she can't use them because the nail polish is messed up and will leave bad streaks on my nails, which I thought was very weird. (Let me start by saying I'm really bad remembering names but here I go) I will give this salon a 1 star review only because I had a very bad experience. I had a haircut done by I think her name was Atalia or Ayalia (she was late middle aged middle eastern lady) well she did a TERRIBLE job on my hair. First I asked her for a haircut with layers (since I have long hair) and showed her a picture of what I wanted then she immediately said "oh no you shouldn't do that it won't look good on you" so I was like ok... ( now I always get haircuts with layers and they look great on me) She said she was going to do only 1 layer. So she started cutting my hair and immediately I felt like she didn't know what she was doing, she was measuring with her comb and cutting, she tried to be nice and start a conversation but she even was talking bad about her own place of work on how the salon looked bad and how it doesn't attract young people like myself (the salon needs a little renovations to be honest) I really don't mind the way the salon looked only if I have a great stylist you know? Then I asked for my hair to be thinned out and she kept asking how much every time she cut, if you are a good hairstylist you know what will look good on your customer, she even looked annoyed when I said a little more. Then she blowed dry my hair and by this time it was already 1:20min into the appointment she seriously took forever and she blow dried my hair terribly! I could've done a better job than her!! When she was finished she didn't even offered a mirror for me to see the final result at the back of my hair I had to ask for one! And when I did my hair looked terrible! Everything was so uneven it looked like my 3 year old cut my hair!!! I was so upset, when I Was on my way to the register the owner heard my complaint and she offered to fix it by this time I didn't want any more damage done to my hair but this young Korean girl (sorry I forgot her name but she has blonde highlights) fixed my hair in 10minutes just the way I wanted it! Thank God for her! So if you guys can go to her it will be great! But the other lady should not be allowed to cut hair. I wasted 1 HR and half for what could've been done in 10 minutes! I can not say enough how amazing this place is. I went there with my husband for his hair cut, Anna cut his hair and she did an amazing job. She cut his hair fast and neat. She also trimmed his beard, though it was her first time doing it she actually did it quite well. Very positive environment and Anna was very bubbly and nice. The receptionist (sorry I didn't get to ask your name) was very sweet as well. Overall really great customer service, great hair cut and the price is good too. So - I arrived earlyfor a dinner appt. and it had been a LONG time (8 months or so) since my last haircut. I knew I needed a trim, but never had the time. I happened to spot Mclean Hair Fashions from across the street, so I wandered over and when I saw the place fairly empty with a sign that said walk ins welcome, I decided to take my chances. I'm SO glad I did! Honestly, the shampoo/head/neck massage was worth the $$ for the haircut! WOW. Second, i got the cutest cut (thanks Sarah from Korea!) and although I just wanted a shampoo and cut, she went ahead and blew my hair dry so that I could get a good representation of her work. When I asked for a trim, she actiually took me at my word and just cut the scraggly tips off - which was perfect as I'm trying to grow out my hair. The price here is wonderful as well. $30. really. that's close to the same price you'd pay at the hair butchery... I mean hair cuttery! and here you get a great shampoo, personalized treatment, and a great cut to boot. Came in for the Japanese treatment. Got the treatment done by Hilda. She mentioned she is NOT certified and learned from others. That should've been a red flag but the chemicals were already in. She acted very cautious but a few weeks later I realized SHE WAS NOT. My hair wreaked of chemicals for days and my brush was acquiring more hair than ever. After a month I realized this was not Normal and my hair had been breaking off in clumps on one side and where I part my hair so obviously she didn't wash it out well enough. She gave me no after care instructions, which turns out you should do a weekly conditioning treatment. I am so lucky to have thick hair so you wont notice it but as it grows back I spend a lot of time hiding the regrowth. Tried to contact the manager but she's only in until 4pm and never returned my calls... I have a 9-5 so clearly she doesn't care about her customers to wait a few extra hours since they close later. read more

I came here with a groupon for japanese hair straightening. When I got there, the stylist refused to do the japanese straightening on me because my hair was already over processed, so she suggested I use the coupon for keratin treatment which they also had a groupon for, and they'd throw in keratin complex shampoo and conditioner to make up for the difference, so I agreed. My hair was awesome the first week and I was so happy. Came week 2, the awesomeness started to dissipate. After 3 weeks it was completely gone. I don't wash my hair everyday and when I do, I use the products they gave me to supposedly make the treatment last longer. I did some research about keratin treatment before getting it done and they mostly say it should last about 2 - 3 months......So I think what I got was keratin express, but the price I paid was definitely not a groupon price for keratin express. The salon itself is really outdated and unattractive looking, which I wouldn't care about if my treatment had last longer.... I won't be coming back. read more

HORRIBLE!!!!!! First of all this is the first review that I write in more than 5 years. I made an appointment and walk in there on Wednesday Dec. 27 looking for HILDA who happened to answer the phone. I wanted a Japanese Straight she had me there from 2-6:30pm. On Sunday 31 after washing my hair and wait till it dries I notice that it was just like before, I inmidiatly went back unfortunately she was the only one working that day (totally blaming my self for allowing her to touch my hair again!!) She said that my hair was already damaged and I should cut it so it grows healthy and she would add keratin. I thought, ok "new look" and told her I was willing to do that as long as it looks good. She said: pick some pictures of the haircut you wold like. Shoot me in the head for not going back and talk straight to the manager, you will see the pictures what I showed her, now you tell me if my hairs looks like any of them! I didn't washed my hair the whole week hoping that the "treatment" will lost in my hair. I paid 230 with the tip, when I called her on Saturday, January 6 she said "came back tomorrow (when no one else is there) and we will see what can we do", then I realized that she gave me her cell phone number, then I called to the Salon and that to her manager, drove there and she gave me back 200, and I am still super UNHAPPY tears come back every time I am in front of the mirror. At one point of the first time I was there I even suggested her to ask to the other lady (Lucy, who seemed a lot more experienced with Japanese Straight) if my type of hair needs something different. But, she answer "no she doesn't know, she can't even speak English" So greedy!!!! She just wanted all the money to herself!!! She should be fired and get her license revoked!!!!!
