I rented a Uhaul from them and noticed immediately it needs a transmission replaced because we were driving to the dump. It was idling high the whole time and not transitioning down. We got to the dump luckily but after going back to my house and trying to bring clothes to my new home, we just purchased. I noticed it was still idling like that and while I was driving, it just shut down completely. I'm now on the side of the road with no power. read more

I'll start off by saying, I usually have very positive experiences here with the staff. I love to support local small businesses as well. However, Richard the store manager is unprofessional, rude and needs a lesson in customer service. He won't even follow the company policy and humiliated me in front of other employees, customers and even the security guard. He is not a leader that should be setting the example for others to follow. I felt insulted and in disbelief when showing him the company policy that he chose not to follow. Have reached out to provide this feedback and have yet to hear back. I will support the other local small business hardware store instead. They obviously don't care enough about customer satisfaction or making things right with a loyal customer, so they must be a thriving business that doesn't need to keep customers coming back. read more

I don't always go to McLendon, but when I do I'm usually looking for something unusual and I'm too lazy to go out to Maple Valley. While the store is fairly small, especially in comparison with others, it packs a good punch and has a good selection of the more obscure items that you find yourself needing to finish that project. While there was great finds here, go in knowing what you need because the staff isn't overly helpful. I've also gotten some key FOBs made here and thus far they've been holding up very nicely with no problems. That being said, they're meant as spare keys so they don't see as much abuse as a primary would. Either way, the price was right and they had no problems ordering the blanks that I needed and cutting them down. read more

The two plummer customer servise woman there don't have any good manners. To be fair, they don't have bad manners. They just didn't have any manners. So after I got what suppose to be the right part I walked toward the cashier. Halfway to the cashier, I desided just buy this from Amazon, which I did, for three dollars less and handed back to the cashier. I have no problem paying that three dollar more if these experts are professional at their field and in their salesmanship. They should work on their salesmanship by first learning how to say and understand the word like "hello," and "thank you," and not looking like a toilet blown up in their faces. It's too competitive now a days. Even though it's automated, at least Amazon say "thank you," which is more than I can say about these "professionals." read more

Not gonna lie.... I do love how close and convenient this store is for us. It's not the large overly commercialized box store of goodies, and I often feel like I'm supporting a more local shop (I know I know... there's a chain but that speaks to the vibe and atmosphere of the staff). I've been coming here for years, and I love that little odds and ends they have. I typically gravitate towards their BBQ and Smoker supplies, and usually walk away with a rub/sauce or two every time. They meet all my tooling and hardware needs, as well as paint and garden supplies. I would love to give them a higher rating, but in this most recent trip, I had gone in, selected a lock that needed to be keyed, and I had just missed the only employee who has the capability of doing that. Out to lunch for an hour. No problem, I'll be back, but the counter person took my name and number, and said they'd call when the the hungry employee returned and finished keying the dead bolt. An hour twenty goes by... no call. No biggie. I'm not too far away, I'll just swing by. When I got there, sure enough, the person working the lock and keys was plugging away, and when I asked about my order, he just stared blankly at me. "What order, what lock, and what phone number?" Uh.... Well... not too worry. He was able to complete the task in a relatively decent amount of time, but it was unfortunate to know there was missed communication from employees to satisfy the customer. Things happen, it's life... I get it. Either way, doesn't change my Mind in ever coming back... because I definitely will. Thanks for the years of service. Oof. This hurt me to give 1 star. This place was my goto store as they usually had what I needed and I live right up the street. My house was built in 1924, so I've probably already spent thousands$$$ of dollars at this establishment. I don't pretend that we don't have a crime issue around here, but my frequent visits and the repetition of these particular incidences have sullied my view of this place and I will not be returning. So here goes; There's an employee that works there who, without fail, zooms in on me EVERY SINGLE time I've encountered him in the tool section. He'll immediately come up to me, ask me what I'm looking for, take me to it, and then proceed to STAND NEXT TO ME the entire time until I am out of the tool section. Now I've straight up called him out on it and told him I'm not a lowlife thief. He feigns "oh just trying to help". Yeah, helping is one thing, but when you're obviously out of your league and you're just standing there in awkward silence with absolutely nothing to contribute, you are no longer helping. I'm the type that doesn't like to be harassed when I'm trying to put the project together in my head to get what I need to avoid return trips. Also, I have a little something called pride. His "standing next to me" is just as bad, if not worse than an outright accusation of theft. Good job, d-bag. You may think you've prevented a theft, but you've actually lost a regular paying customer forever. I guess it's Home Depot from here on out. I got so annoyed with Home Depot that I came here and then wondered why I'd not started here in the first place. While it isn't huge like a big-box store, it's got people who know their stuff and know where things are when you ask, and can be found to be asked (none of which happens at H Depot). They've assisted me with big projects (made some wood cuts for me), custom blended my paints, and stocked me with all the Christmas and Halloween lights and stuff I needed, and flowers and plants. We came here for some Xmas stuff, and inquired about some pricing. One of the employees who was sweeping was not very friendly. It almost seems as though we were bothering her or whatnot. When asked if an item was on sale, she said no because there's no sign indicating that it is, then walked away. We brought it to the girl at the register to check, and it was indeed on sale. Moral of the story: don't listen to the employee , especially if they don't go out of their way to scan the item to check the price for confirmation. Tried to return plants that had died due to fungus in aprox 2 weeks) Not a problem as this sometimes happens. The plants were originally purchased at the Renton Store but per protocol returns can be done at any location. When going to the Kent store with plants and RECEIPT, the associate looks at me and says "these plants were a little pricey so I need to check with the manager" Remember I had receipt in hand, as I used a credit card my name was also on the receipt. The manager SHAY comes up, looks at me ( and my Brown Face), looks at the receipt and says that I need to return the plants to the store they were purchased from. In my opinion based on my interaction at the store with both the cashier/associate and Manager Shay they probably have problems with customers who don't look like them ! Receipts matter and OUR money is green!! PS my experience going to the Renton store that day, with steam coming out my ears, totally different. Came here looking to buy a bag of pumice after finding out Home Depot doesn't have any on hand. We were lead to the pumice right away after asking an employee. While we didn't check out the other goods in the store, I was intrigued by a few of their gardening options. The pumice which was already considered to be cheap, $5 a bag rang up to cost only $2! What a steal! Not sure what prompted the extra sale but I wasn't complaining! Glad to know there's a store with some super niche gardening supplies. read more

Mother's Day Fuschia Baskets. Every year my husband and sons show up at 7am for the May Spring Sale and battle the crowds for the three most beautiful fuschia plants for me. They are beautiful, healthy and I cherish them all summer. McLendon Hardware has such a special place in my heart - we now get our Christmas Trees there and all of our garden and container plants there. Not to mention all the hard to find plumbing and electrical parts we need. Fear not McLendon's - the big boxes can't compete where you clearly excel. Just went shopping to McLendons Hardware to get some fasteners to finish a project and found that they were no longer requiring face masks to enter their store. They had that requirement posted everwhere but did no enforce it. Most people were not protected in the store. If this is important to you as a shopper then do not shop at McLendons. When we first arrived in Kent, we were very happy to find a smaller hardware store that didn't require us to walk "miles" to get what we needed, and had employees there to help us. McLendon was just that! A couple of weeks ago we went in and asked for help with a screen door. It was obvious that two of the female employees at that counter did not like each other. Kind of unprofessional. But, one of them took our info and told us somebody would be in touch with us by the end of the day. We never heard a thing. We used Screen Man - and they did a great job. Today I went in to get some play sand. I had it pulled up on my phone and it said the brand I wanted was in stock. I couldn't find that brand outside, and didn't see any employees out there - so I went in and asked a female employee (one of those same two female employees from the screen door incident) where I could find it. She said (rather shortly), "It's oustide!" - with a swooshing hand in that direction. I told her I'd been out there and couldn't find it. Then in a louder, ruder voice, she said, "There's a guy out there." as she was walking away. Geezm. I found the employee outside and he pointed at a different brand. I told him it wasn't the brand I wanted, and showed him what was on my phone and that their website said it was in stock. He shrugged and said, "Well, it's still playsand." Ugh. I had to explain that it was wet - and I wanted a dry play sand. He said - less than sincerely - "Well, sorry, that's all we have." I left. Don't think I will ever go back. Their prices are higher - and I thought that was fine because the service was great. But - it was horrible, so I think I am done. read more

I've been going to McLendon's East Hill Kent since they came here. Late last year I noticed a sea-change. Ton's of new employees, old timers seemed drawn and worn, a lot of the little things I usually saw were gone and replaced by big box store type stuff. You get the picture. So I asked. And learned that they've been bought out by some huge conglomerate. I was assured that nothing would change, but that the selection would get better as the transition took place. They were having some trouble with the transition though. It is now April, 2019. I'm hard pressed to find someone who actually knows electrical, plumbing, Etc., and when I asked for a bayonet plumbing fitting I had to explain to the guy what it was. Summary: McLendon Hardware, because it still has onesies and twosies of things, unlike big box stores, still gets 3 stars. But the days of actually being able to talk to an electrician or plumber for help are apparently over. Unless I miss my mark, they have become just another hardware store. From my perspective that is a real shame. read more

I used to adore going to McLendons because they had knowledgeable, friendly staff. I went to get a few needed things and was very nervous about being in there during the Covid-19 crisis. I was sent back to the hardware desk to buy rebar, waited and waited and waited while 3 employees chatted and helped 1 customer with copying a key (seriously?!!), finally they got to me and then told me I was sent to the wrong place and to go outside for the rebar. The fellow outside knew nothing about rebar and couldn't cut it for me. The gal in the garden center was helpful and the person on the phone was very pleasant. Mixed bag with my experience at the Kent location. So far I have only had good experiences at the Sumner location. read more

I just got myself a house and it's definitely not the taj mahal, so what to do but go down to McLendon's for all my hardware needs. (I realize that sounds like a commercial but in this case it's 100% true.) Stepping into McLendon's feels a bit like you're stepping back a few decades. Everyone is friendly, they have bulk hardware items organized into those fantastic little bins, and the staff knows everything about anything. We had a plumbing issue and Mr. Super Helpful Plumbing Genius was able to identify the correct pipe and additional tools we would need to finish the job, with a simple glance at a picture on my phone. As if that weren't enough, he pulled out a sticker with his phone number on it and placed it on the tools so we could call him if we needed help. I've been here other times and the staff have always been knowledgeable, friendly, and more than willing to help. They are a new homeowner's godsend. Looking forward to spending more time here in the future as we fix up our home - and so thankful we have them in our neighborhood! read more

McLendon's was my GO-TO hardware store until today. I needed a specific 5 gallon gas can, which Tractor Supply sells for $39.99 and Home Depot sells for $38.86 - they were out of stock, but receiving more in a couple days. I found one at the Kent McLendon's store and its price is $49.99 - that's 25% more than their local in-store competitors. I asked if they match prices and was told "only if the item is in the store". Since I couldn't wait I had to pay their $10 premium for the exact same product. I hope this crappy review and the fact that they will NEVER see another dollar of mine is worth their money-grubbing price matching policy. Whomever is running this store has their head screwed on backwards...or worse. read more

This store has that item you just can't find at the big box stores. Need a breaker for that 50 year old service panel? How about some springs to fit the locks in the 1960's windows of your house? Washers for an American Standard faucet they haven't even made since 1962? They have it all and if they don't have you don't really need it. How about the people who work there? When I brought in a valve stem from said American Standard faucet the plumbing guy helped me find the correct washers and even showed me how to install one. These washers were 12 cents each and he took the time to install one so I wouldn't have trouble. He also showed me how to repack the fittings for a drip free faucet. There is also a woman in the electrical department who was able to identify my breaker box type from a picture on my phone, got me the breaker I needed and told me how to install it correctly so it wouldn't arc and cause a fire (this box is from the 50's and is know to catch fire if stuff is not done correctly). Overall the prices aren't always great but you're paying for the staff who know what they are doing. You have to be willing to wait your turn on busy days but with help from the staff you can get everything the first time and not have to make multiple trips to the store. read more

I love this place. I usually shop between here and Home Depot for house building, mending or upkeep stuff. When this place has a sale, usually nobody can beat them. The people here are knowledgeable and super nice for the most part. Just this last weekend for a deck fixing project I saw a killer sale on some 2"x4"x8' (two by four's) for $1.99 and they were primo quality. The young man in the yard was very willing to help me load it up. Zero attitude. That really made my day since I remember working hard like that at his age. The single nuts and bolts or random hardware selection is extensive. You can purchase only 1 or thousands at a time. Just put them in a bag and write down the stock number and/or price. Ya, it's self serve but for do it yourselfers like me it's so awesome, sometimes I only need 1 weird screw or something that's stainless to replace one that's rusty. I would say that Mr. Mclendon was probably a carpenter or a professional of the sort because the stock here is geared towards one stop shopping. 99% of all you need is here. Poor customer service... the employees spent more time chatting than assisting customers. We went to the garden section to get a Christmas tree. When we finally found someone hidden in the back, he stared at us blankly for a full minute before finally agreeing to help us purchase a tree. After we pulled up in front of the store, he asked my husband if he brought his own twine... then he reluctantly went back to get twine and watched while my husband put the tree on the car by himself. Meanwhile two other employees magically showed up and watched then proceeded to take a smoke break. This is very disappointing. We have always been big supporters of this store so it's unfortunate that we won't be returning.. especially during the holiday season. read more

I like that McLendon's doesn't have the mega hardware store feel to it. For once I didn't feel intimidated going to a hardware store. The staff here actually knows about products and it's easy to find an employee when you have a question. I also compared prices and McLendons had lower prices than Home Depot!.
