Re: Sumner McLendon's: When I purchased 5 pallets of Beauty Bark and Potting soil, I requested delivery. I had to pay $75 deposit for the pallets and was told it didn't matter that it "could" take me a few years before I (Senior, disabled, single, lady) to get everything off the pallets, the refund would be good. Well, it wasn't! My handyman, who brought them back yesterday, was told they have a "6 month" limit on returning pallets. Well, I guess I'm the fool for assuming their verbal statement was a solid agreement! I still have the receipt for the $75 pallet charge, but they will not honor their verbal agreement, after 6 months!!!!!!! read more

my experience with the Sumner store never changes. I purchase seven items. All brought to the cashier in the hand carry basket that is made available when you first walk in. The clerk doesn't offer the use of the basket after purchase or any bags of any kind. The basket which I had no desire to keep was for the ease of getting said items to my truck. I would be bringing it back for gods sake. The overall attitude of a couple of cashiers there who are regulars, seem to sense that we customers should be grateful they came in that day to serve us. Unless you like a cluster f*ck and your time wasted, DO NOT use this place to book a Uhaul rental. I booked a box truck and trailer to tow my jeep. The reservation was made on their website at about 8am for pick up at 11am. When the reservation was completed it showed that I would get a call back within an hour. I waited about 2 hours and 15 minutes before calling them...only to be told I can pickup the box truck but the trailer there I can't use. Someone is using it tomorrow I was told. I asked her why I was able to make a reservation when the product isn't available. I was then told I can drive 40 miles to pick it up at another location, even after telling the lady I am walking to McLendon's to pick it up, I don't have use of a car. The Three Stooges would run this business better than these people do. Amateur Hour at it's finest. read more

Trying to fix a hose bib, it was leaking. Ok, pex pipe (red), got the fitting from Amazon, had a day off, water could be off. Uh, no, it was copper pipe, no thread, and I already cut the facet off. I had not been impressed with the big box stores ability, so I go to McClendon, they always impress. Walked in the door, guy immediately asks if he could help me, I need an expert in plumbing, isle 10, cool. Go to the desk, kid was helping a young lady. He did not lose focus of what he was doing, totally appreciate that-hate rude people who think they are more important. Walked back to the facets, said, nope, I will wait. You know the kid I am talking about, he's more a young adult. I'm a school teacher, everyone is a kid. He finishes up, I put the facet on the desk, and the new one, which won't work now, he ASKS QUESTIONS, we walk back to the bins, do you have a soldering iron, Nope. Grabs copper fit glue, the facet and a coupler, made sure everything fit and I was off to checkout. There is hope for mankind after all, I just need to go the right people to solve my problems. Who ever this kid was, impressed the crap out of me with his genuine desired to help. On my way home I was thinking, can I get this done before the ex gets home. McLendon Hardware use to be a great place to go. Our experience yesterday was less then great. The first two people we saw were not happy at all and their negative projections made us wonder what happened to this normally great place to go. We rented a U-Haul pickup through McLendon's and the following is our feedback to U-Haul. "There was no one at the counter when the store opened. If our rental is for 7 am we expect someone to be there to complete it as we scheduled that time to rent as we were on a schedule to complete our task! Then the truck was dirty inside the cab (dirt and trash on floor and behind the seats) and the bed of the truck had stones and dirt in it. The stake pockets were caked with old dirt. Plus the fuel tank was only at half, meaning you have to guess if you are filling it to the correct spot or spending extra money putting fuel in that you DID NOT USE. If we did not think it would take these people an hour or more to go fill the tank like it should be on a rental we would not have taken it in such condition. We know other vehicle rental places we have used try to get us to do this free fuel scam by not having a full tank but we always have them fill it before our contract starts. Shame on U-haul for doing this same scam!" read more

Called in (day before Thanksgiving) to ask if they had food-grade 5 gallon buckets... for brining a turkey. The guy who answered never heard of such a thing and asked ME which department that would be . He transferred me to somewhere. The next employee of the company told me he never heard of them either and that they had "paint buckets, you want a paint bucket, we got that" - his tone and attitude was that I was bothering him with a stupid question. Bummer, I spent over $400 in just 2 days and just moved down this way, recently. One thing about Johnsons Do It Center, they were always polite. With service like this, I could just goto Home Depot. read more

Boy has this place gone downhill. Nobody knows their a-ss from their elbow down there. My practice is Home Depot for the best price if I know what I need and McClendon if I need help. I'm willing to pay more for that. They used to have great people working in plumbing that were always extremely helpful. I went through 3 people the other day and none know more that me. They actually knew much less which is discouraging because I'm a healthcare worker. Anyway, one guy was in the plumbing area and I asked him for help and he said " I have no idea, I work in lawn and garden". He didn't offer to get anyone and I was left to wonder why he doesn't stay in lawn and garden if he knows nothing about plumbing. The others knew nothing either so I guessed at what I needed just like I do at Home Depot. I guess I drive even father to Ace in Buckley from now on when I need advice. read more

I Have always been a great supporter of McLendon Hardware. Stopped today for some dirt. One of the great things about McLendon Hardware was Pops McLendon was always civic oriented. Since the sale some things may have gotten better but a lot of the special service have died. Wanted to drop off some batteries for recycling. Learned after asking several employees they no longer provided this service. Not sure why but I am sure it will have something to do with COVID. read more

I really wish we had a McLendon's closer to the house. I would shop here before going to a big box hardware store any day. The stores all have the same hardware, nuts and bolts feeling that I enjoy. They also carry those items that you would never find at the other places, such as random style light bulbs, specialty switches, etc. The staff are always helpful and seem to know what they are doing, which is a huge plus. My only complaint and reason I didn't give five stars is, while visiting this location during this trip, had we been only a few minutes later, wouldn't have known about a sale on the bulbs we were buying. It was at least an hour prior to closing and the department clerk was removing the sale tags because the sale was going off after they close. We ended up buying more than we came in there for because we discovered they were on sale. read more

We live close and have frequented McLendon's for over 30 years. Yesterday my two adult daughters went in looking for flower bulbs. They didn't have any, but each girl found something to buy from the clearance section. My first daughter bought a spool of garden twine and then stood to the side while her sister checked out. An employee came up and asked her if she needed help making a purchase. She said "no, I'm done." He then asked if she was going to pay for the item in her hand. She was extremely embarrassed and showed him her receipt. He didn't apologize. He just told her that she could go. Her sister who was checking out was so distracted by what was going on that she didn't realize they charged her $7.99 instead of .79 for an ice scraper. Just a bad experience altogether. We used to love the service and the fact that they hired experts who could give advice. They're now just an overpriced common hardware store with poor customer service. read more

We went into buy kerosene and saw that it was on sale for a great price, the tag clearly said 5 gal Kerosene. when we got to the register they rang up for over double the price. The cashier called someone and when they looked at the tag they informed us that the sale was for the gas cans, again the tag clearly says 5 gal Kerosene, it said nothing referring to a gas can. They would not budge. I will never shop at this location again, they don't even honor their own sale prices!!!! read more

McLendon Hardware was always a great backup to the other big box hardware stores and we like them for their service and having items the other locations might not carry. We always felt welcome and they went out of their way to help the customer. Apparently the family operation sold out to Memphis-based Central Network Retail Group (CNRG) and the effects are already showing. In the past - when I would ask where something was - the employee would take us. On Memorial Day - twice - different employees pointed and said they "believed" it is down there. Also - 4 items we have purchased in the past are no longer available such as the Scarecrow Pond protector, paper trash compactor bags and a plastic tool caddy. They said they are changing their product line to the new companies. Huh - if they are selling the same products as all the chains - guess I will buy from the larger chains. Sounds like they are trying to become the next Ernst Home Centers - where service disappeared among other issues - wonder where they are today. This review is for an employee at the Sumner hardware store for using her patience along with her knowledge with mixing paint. Kennedy assisted me with a return of paint evidently the color wasn't on a color code. Kennedy demonstrated patience with my persistence of wanting the color I was seeking..By using her mass employee skills, she was able to custom mix the perfect shade. It's refreshing to see employees like Kennedy ,go above and beyond to meet a customers request. read more

Service could have been better, employee named Chloe was rude when I told her she should have come and got the next person in line instead of letting other people jump in front of us. " She said I could only see who's in front of me,"which makes no sense when she was walking from a Nile to come help alleviate the line. I've shopped here a lot in the past and really liked the store and the employees have always been great until today. I have a medical disability and was asked to leave the store today. The manager told me he didn't care that I have a medical condition preventing me from wearing a mask and that I had a note from my doctor saying I am unable to wear one. Every other business makes exemptions for people because the governor and the Americans with Disabilities Act say they should. I'll be taking my business elsewhere from now on and I find it maddening that they said they don't want the business of medically disabled people. I also find it humiliating that i was kicked out in front of all the customers in there. read more

You know, I never realized McLendon Hardware was a chain until right... now. I always figured it as the local hardware store. Imagine my surprise when I got multiple yelp search hits. Growing up, McLendon's was always our go-to hardware store. They have everything - fixtures, parts, bulbs, tools. etc. Plus, they have a good lumber yard as well. I've never had a bad experience here. The employees are friendly and knowledgeable. They have a great gardening section. In the summer time, we'd plant a garden at our house. Mints, cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, chili peppers, and egg plants (sometimes). We'd stock up on seeds and fertilizer from McLendon's, and pick up a few other things they might have on hand. I'd have to say the parking lot was the best feature of the place. Store was small and cluttered, and the price on the items I was looking for were 30% or so higher then Home Depot. Bonus star for the fish pond in the front of the store. Nice rock work and some pretty fish. That said, it isn't enough to bring me back. One last thing, the hanging plants outside in the nursery are way low. If you're taller then about 5' 6" remember to duck!! read more

McLendon Hardware - Nurseries & Gardening Near Me - Sumner, Washington

I like McLendon'a in general. Been shopping there for over fifty years. Lately, at this store there are very few people on the floor to help, and there are a lot of new employees, or trainees. I'm finding that I have to train these trainees almost every time I get one. Too often they don't think outside the box like the seasoned employees do. They don't help you until your problem is solved like the seasoned employees do. They just say way too easily, "I'm sorry we don't carry that." McClendon's has everything you need to fix just about any problem but you need to find someone who will help you think outside the box. So if you get stuck with a trainee, don't let them off the hook with their standard, "I'm sorry, we don't have that." Make them at least make an effort to help you figure it out. That's what McClendon's is known for. My dad worked at McClendon's for twenty years after retiring from Boeing and he never let a customer leave the store until he had a solution for them. He thought outside the box every day. I know McClendon's has been bought out since i started shopping as a youth at the original store in Renton, but it seems they are at least trying to maintain that same caring customer service feel. I hope that's true and if it is, they need to do some work with their trainees and teach them what good customer service is all about. What I got today wasn't good customer service. But i was able to think outside the box on my own and solve my own problem and then i told the trainee how i solved it and I also let her know that if she wanted to be any good at what she's doing she will try harder to think outside the box and not let a customer leave the store defeated. That should never happen. That's what is typical for Home Depot. But NOT at McClendon's. read more

The gentleman working in the electrical department listened while I described my cabinet lighting project, then walked me around to find the right products. High prices & terrible service. I felt like I was a huge inconvenience walking in with paint colors ready to buy BM paint. I tried to get some help but all the employees looked & walked another direction when I tried to make eye contact. The store was a ghost town mind you. On the flip side, Bonney Lake Home Depot was there to save my paint project! So sad, I was always a big fan of McLendon's growing up. read more

I love McLendon's!!! I searched everywhere (lowes, home depot, ace, sumner tractor) for a lawnmower blade and couldn't find it. One place said it would be a special order part. McLendon's not only had it in stock, but they had like 15 in stock!!! Their staff is VERY knowledgable and very quick to help you out. I'm never left standing for very long before someone asks if I need help. Incredible selection of everything you need at reasonable prices. The building is kinda small and isles are pretty packed together which can get crowded really quick, making it somewhat frustrating at times.
