Wish I would've read the reviews before establishing care here. Waited over 2 hours for my dogs annual routine visit. While I saw a review comment that was that this drop in system allows owners to wait less time for an appointment - that simply isn't true when looking at annual appointments. Since it's not urgent it would be totally fine for me to book an appt 2 weeks out knowing my dog could be seen once I got there. Waiting 2+ hours for a non urgent visit just isn't going to work out for everyone! 1st visit was fine. 2nd visit the vet let 2 younger girls come in and clip my puppy nails (terrible job, skipped over some nails) when it was time for her shot the girls did not administer her shot properly (my puppy didn't flinch or cry like she usually does so I know she didn't get it) it spilled all over my puppy fur and when she went to refill to try again the vet told her it was ok but wasn't even in the room to know what happened!!! 3rd visit was for her last shot and boarding . I'm not even sure if she actually received her shot this time but I know she didn't get a bath like I requested because she smelled like dog and urine . Terrible experience due to the clinic's rigid and unreasonable policies. My daughter is attending school at Bama and needed to bring in her dog for medical treatment. This "walk-in clinic" absolutely refuses to see any new patients after 11:00 am on weekdays even if the animal comes to the clinic as a walk-in in the afternoon. It's such a bizarre and nonsensical policy to have in place for a clinic that advertises that it does not make appointments and is exclusively walk-in. I explained that my daughter has classes until noon each day and cannot miss class to bring in her dog but they did not care at all. I've lived all over the country and have never heard of a vet clinic adopting such an odd policy. It's obvious they don't care about their clients or patients. read more

My dog has only been to this vet since she was a puppy....shes almost 8 now. We had all MANDATORY vaccines given to her every year here. When she was a puppy she became lethargic/had reaction to the other vaccines she was given here which scared me. Dr Compton was very helpful even calling me on a Saturday to check on her. Brought her in to get her ears checked today but because I am not an "established patient" meaning I do not give her all the vaccines they recommend she is being turned away today. Front desk clerk has rolled her eyes at me numerous times. I have recommended this vet to all my friends and family. Not anymore. They are only here for money and not pets. I just got an estimate 1 month ago for $500 teeth cleaning and her yearly mandatory shots that's due in June...but I'm not "established"...I will not be back. She is an inside only dog... read more

About 3 1/2 years ago, I started using Dr Compton, on my daughter's recommendation. They knew from the beginning I gave my pups their vaccines, have done so for approx 30 years but that my previous vet had given them their puppy vaccines (due to covid). I had their full records transferred over to Dr. Compton so they would be on file. December 5, 2022, one of my pups was neutered without any vaccine issue. On Saturday, June 14, 2025, I arrived around 7:10 am to a 1/2 filled parking lot and 2 people in the waiting room. Dr Somerford was the vet available. When I finally got into a room, speaking to a tech as to why I was there, the vet came in. Dr Somerford starting talking to me about vaccines and "my dislike for lepto" - which was not my reason for the visit or in any of my discussions. I said "you must know my daughter" and that is when she gave me "her opinion" of my daughter (of course, her opinion was not asked for nor appreciated). After Dr Somerford and I had her lepto vaccine discussion, we finally got to the reason I was there - my pup had a tiny lump I was concerned about. She tested that lump, saw some cancer cells, told me she would ask the other vets to look at the sample on Monday, give me a call & set up surgery - never once mentioning vaccine issues. A bit later, the tech comes in, says they cannot do a surgery because "my pup is not up to date with vaccines". I said yes he is, he had his vaccines in August, 2024. She said "by their records, he was not because they had not given them and they would not recognize my vaccines". I said ok, that was 10 months ago, although I'm totally against giving a vaccine before a year, I will give him one today so he can have the surgery. The tech said, "well, he will also need one in 4 weeks because we don't have his puppy vaccines on record". I explained that my pups files were sent over a couple years ago, they were given their puppy vaccines, one pup had been neutered there without issue, this one was 5 years old and didn't need his puppy vaccines again. The tech said they would refuse the surgery without the "vaccines" - plural. I asked to speak to the vet and the tech said "she did not have time to speak to me". I said well, why didn't the vet tell me this before you charged me $246.00 and wasted 3 1/2 hours of my time when I could have gone to a better vet. The tech said "well, we didn't expect him to have cancer and no other vet will do his surgery either". The more the tech and I spoke, I found out the office updated their system a couple years ago and "records" were "lost". Dr Collins (the owner) was supposed to call me 1st thing Monday, June 16, no call, nor a call on Tuesday. Moral to the story - Dr Somerford can trash my daughter, do testing on my dog knowing I did his vaccines, charge me for said testing, find out he has cancer - then deny surgery after knowing all the facts and her knowing the whole time, no matter the result outcome, she will deny surgery! If you want to wait over 2 hrs for your established client pet to be seen and another 1/2 hour to get a vaccine during a routine check this is the place to go! They don't take appointments which is beyond ridiculous. And I don't want to hear about how it's family owned with staffing issues! If thats the case then take appts for what you can handle and adjust your walk in hours or don't have them at all. 3 hrs for a vet appt is unacceptable. Plenty of other vets in town read more

We took our dog this afternoon for a cough because they are a walk-in clinic. They refused to see her because she is not an established patient who gets yearly shots with them. They said they see non established patients in the morning. I haven't seen that posted anywhere. Our dog has been there numerous times and has even had surgery there. They were actually rude. i have used McLendon for 30 years. This facility has been under new ownership for several years now. Today, I phoned the clinic to let them know I was outside their office with my dog that appeared to be critically ill. I was advised that given the clinic had not seen my dog in two years, they couldn't see my dog because the evenings were reserved for patients that had been seen annually. I Could not believe what I was hearing. My dog was last seen on July 22,2024. I called Indian Rivers Clinic and they were extremely caring and warmly accepted my dog. My fears were confirmed and my dog had to be euthanized. Needless to say, I have a new and more caring vet. I strongly advise those interested in McLendon look elsewhere! read more

I have been a loyal customer of this vet since 2021, I have even boarded my dog here before (which wasn't a great experience and I would not recommend but besides the point). I am going to be boarding my dog for christmas, and we were traveling so I needed to get him his yearly check up/vaccines at a vet in a different city. I called McLendon to ask what exactly my dog needed to be updated on, and they informed me that he was totally up to date on all vaccines and only needed his yearly checkup and fecal exam. I thought this was a little weird, but said okay, and took him to get his yearly checkup at the other vet. I went back to McLendon today (about two weeks later, 4 days until i am boarding my dog) to get a print out of his vaccine records to bring to the boarding place. Lo and behold, he is NOT up to date on his vaccines! He needs two, one of which has been needed since MAY! 6 MONTHS AGO! Why was I not told this on the phone? How would I have any other way of knowing? Now I am scrambling to get my dog these vaccines. Luckily another vet in town had an opening tomorrow, because I will never be spending another penny at this clinic and I suggest that you don't either. read more

Rude and lack of care, the owner/doctor seem to want money more than the well being of the animals. Very money driven and will have the most expensive options put on your bill with hopes that you just agree and pay without looking to hard. Even the exam was half done and i was told it was just a bump that would go away, just for me to take my cat to another vet to find a foreign item in his swollen back that had gotten infected and created a cyst that ended up bursting. Also why have they responded to every good review but barely any bad ones where people had genuine concerns. Everyone here was very friendly and helpful, and herded Dr. Compton was especially awesome! We haven't been to the vet in awhile and they were very patient answering any questions I had. I also appreciate that they understood if we couldn't afford things and worked to make things as cheap as possible. Having lived here a year, it was past time to find a vet. Our friend recommended this place, and since he has a pretty crazy dog, we figured he would know. So, the thing to understand is that they ONLY take walk-ins. Which sounds kind of nice, just stop by, but is also awful, because you can't actually plan for how long it will take. We arrived just after 2pm on a Friday (they take a break for lunch and start again at 2) to a full waiting room. We waited close to 90 minutes to be seen, and between the exam, x-ray, discussion, etc. did not leave until 4:30. Now, the doctor (I can't remember his name, but he was a younger, new-ish guy, not the McClendon in the name) was very nice and seemed knowledgeable and reasonable. We jointly determined that we would figure out if our dog's cough had some underlying serious source, or was something we shouldn't worry about. Plus, they seem to have no shortage of people whose job it is to hold your animal while they're being examined and take them to x-rays, etc., which was really nice, since we didn't have to worry about trying to hang onto him (and the guy was very gentle, petted him, and presumably wouldn't have the job if he didn't like animals a whole lot). The ladies at the front desk did their job, but nothing more. They have computers, but everything was written on a card and then maybe typed in (?), and just getting some chewable meds and paying was a bit of a lengthy process. Honestly, the waiting especially felt like the DMV. You know you'll be seen eventually, in order, but WOW how long is it going to take?! I mean, polite conversation with your neighbors can only go so far... Now that our dog is established here, I guess this will be our vet, but I would really prefer if they took appointments so I don't have to spend half the day at it. read more

I took both of my dogs here for one to receive a rabies 3 yr vaccination and both flea,tick, and heart worm preventative for 6 months. They took one dog back for the rabies vaccination and then brought the other back without disclosing what for. They simply said they needed him and that was it. No offering of why they needed him or what procedures they might need to do. After some time they brought both dogs back out and handed us a bill for $600 with no explanation and only concerned with payment. It turned out that they went AGAINST our wishes and fully vaccinated both dogs without our permission even though they were up to date on all their vaccinations other than the one rabies vaccine. I also learned that they made this decision to treat before receiving records from our past vet. I was told " the vet decided to just do it anyway." Mind you, this is all still without our knowing what was going on during the 3-hour wait. Additionally, they performed fecal exams and heart worm exams without prior explanation of cost and permission. I highly recommend to the staff that if you're in the business of charging people hundreds of dollars in one day that you provide an estimate and ask permission of the owner prior to treatment; especially when they are specific in their wishes. read more

New to town and had no idea of what vet would take best care of my dog. My senior dog was unable to walk due to advancing age and a long term hip condition. The staff at Mclendon was able to put him in a stretcher and get him to the exam room. Dr Collins examined him and explained our options. We were afraid of the worst but the Dr said to let them medicate our dog and work with him for a few days to see if things would improve. The Dr called several times over the next few days to update me on his progress. They allowed me to come by and see my dog. Happy to report the dog is walking and moving well. We have him back home and are enjoying his company. Everyone at Mclendon was caring and helpful during a very difficult time. I highly recommend them for your pet. read more

I cannot sing the praises of Doctors Compton and Collins enough. Dr. Compton is the primary vet for my current kitty, my late kitty, and my mom's dog. They're so friendly, caring, knowledgeable. The vet techs/assistants are all incredible and smart people, as well. They always discuss EVERY detail of their care plan, are transparent about costs, and treats every pet as if they were theirs. My last cat died very suddenly and they were so gentle about the whole thing. I trust them 100% with my animal babies. read more

I rescued a puppy on a saturday and had to have him checked out by monday by a vet on the sheet the rescuers gave us it listed around 12 vets that would give him a free check up to make sure he is healthy. Monday morning i wake up and he is very sick with GI issues and Cough. I took him to Animal medical center thinking it was distemper and they said they couldnt see him even though it was an emergency and i could "sit in my car with him" until a doctor got there. I called every vet on the list, and Mclendon was the last one on the list and they were the only ones that would see him. When i arrived he was seen within 5-10 minutes, Dr. Compton was very sympathetic, and helpful with all my questions, eased some concerns, talked about options to do, and she was very worried about my dog. Our first visit was a sad one because we had to put my sweet, aged, therapy cat to sleep. After being my most consistent and cherished companion for 14yrs is was one of the most difficult days of my life. We could not see our reg vet on a Sat, so chose to come here. They made us feel so welcome and we're so compassionate. We immediately decided that for our 2 other cats we would transfer their healthcare here right away. They were obviously very skilled and empathetic to both pets and owners, and their Saturday hours make it so much easier for us to come in.
