The atmosphere in this turn-off-the-20th-century style dim-lit whiskey bar with beautiful couches and fireplace aesthetic perfection and frenetic social club energy is nearly unmatched. The room alone almost made it worth my time. The English pea risotto was very good, and the house fries were good. The French-oaked flight I requested was a sad effort. The bartender never asked what distillers I had as options other than indicating that Makers 46 must be what I'm after when I said French oaked and creamy was my vibe, to which I raised an eyebrow and indicated I was ok if he started with that in my flight as a base for comparison. Otherwise he never asked whether I'd like to spend good money on something special (I would have said yes) and later claimed these were the only French-oaked bottles they even had in stock despite a claimed inventory of over 2,000 whiskeys. What arrived: Penelope Architect--nothing at all on the nose, something like wood paneling on the palate. Angel's Envy Triple Oak--tasted just like the Angel's Envy Rum Cask I can get at the supermarket. Maker's 46--the best of those three, yet still quintessentially basic as a wheated French-staved bargain buy, which, by the way, I never indicated I was there for. When I diplomatically indicated my that my flight was totally blasé and asked for one last pour in hopes of redeeming the experience, he brought me a redundant Maker's Heart Series in which the heart was made of mildly chocolate-inspired disappointment. Staff clearly put effort into educating and serving, and the environment is special enough that I hope to return with friends for that alone, even though I was rushed out due to a scheduled reservation needing my unscheduled seat. Ultimately the pours left me with an extremely unimpressive result and a future 0-for-2 that I'd be willing to risk in hopes of their redemption. We have enjoyed going here with friends. We have been a few times and always have a great time. The service there has been consistently top notch and the drinks are fantastic. The only thing I would change is the food- it's pretty good, but nothing really stands out. They don't have one dish(es) I would typically want to order again. I do wish there were more entree options. The biggest draw is the vast selection of whiskey, bourbons and other spirits. Their cocktails are fabulous and the waiter/waitress have always been great at giving suggestions and helping guide the experience. The lounge has a great atmosphere and vibe. I'm not a member but we have some friends that are so I consider myself pretty lucky to have tried this place. First off, I'm not a huge whiskey or bourbon guy but I do know quality when I drink it. For the novice whiskey drinker you may become overwhelmed with the enormous inventory of brands and offerings but rest assured the staff here is top notch and most knowledgeable to help you along. The food is actually a star on its own. The smash burger is my favorite but some of the smaller shareable plates are equally divine. Notably the tempura veggies and the mashed potatoes. I wanted to try a new cocktail and a few new whiskeys, but I'm not an expert or big spender--and Liz still made my experience feel special. She checked in on my preferences, we talked thru options, and she shared some interesting background on the whiskeys/distilleries. The host & hostess were both kind/accommodating, as well. Ambience is neat, a bit dated / old school, but a nice spot to get lost in for a few hours. Amazing. Maybe I should give it 1 star so less people find out about it LOL. My friend who comes to Portland often decided to bring me here and am I glad she did. We went on a random Tuesday night, we are non-members. Luckily we only waited in the bar downstairs for a few min and were able to get 2 seats at the bar upstairs. They have an amazing extensive whiskey library, as stated in the title. We didn't care of any of the cocktails on the menu and the bartender was more than happy to create drinks based on our preference and WOW. We did 2nd cocktails, we did similar but different and again, we were not disappointed. If you have the opportunity, you need to make a trip here. A must visit if visiting Portland, Oregon! We got the hall pass which essentially lets you to pick a specific day to enjoy the membership lounge area. I believe there is also an outer green room for non-membership walk-in or ones w/o a hall pass. This leads us to sit at one of the coolest bar section where we were told there are around 2000+ bottles of spirit collections. The menu selections are massive! I'm not a big whiskey person, but I still enjoyed the drinks a lot. My favorite out of the 4 drinks we tried: Halo effect(Irish whiskey, bourbon, milk oolong tee, mango...etc). I love Multnomah! It's the best place in Portland for a great drink and delicious food. It's been 7 years since I've been here and was on my hit list for my bday! I had 3 old fashioned's and ate the deviled eggs, olives and bone barrow garlic bread and nothing disappointed. I was offered 3 types of bourbons with giving the bartender a short list of bourbons I currently drink; trails end, old forester and peerless. All were great and enjoyed them in the order listed above. :) I dig this place not just for its great food and drinks but the staff are always on point, nice, knowledgeable and willing to accommodate you in any way. The over all aesthetic of it being a rustic, dimly lit restaurant but you get a prohibition type of atmosphere about it but from a more upscale point. Apparently there are three different areas to enjoy this beautiful space. If you are without membership, there is the Green Room then an upstairs portion. I entered at the exact time of my reservation and was escorted upstairs with no time in the Green Room. Upstairs I received a complimentary glass of champagne and I stated with a signature old fashioned with Nikka Coffey grain and deviled eggs. Followed by their Bouillabaisse and a second old fashioned with Uncle Nearest. I then requested to seethe Members lounge which is a smaller, yet brighter room. Upon checking-in at The Green Room about 10 minutes early for our Hall Pass reservation, we were immediately greeted by friendly staff. A second friendly employee escorted us the Member's Lounge where we received complimentary sparkling wines. After a short wait, we were escorted (again by friendly staff) to THE Library itself. The library transports you back into a prohibition-era bar/library clad with brick & dark judges-paneled walls. Dim, but ample light, showcase the 2500 bottles of liquor and give a moody & relaxed ambience. Our bartender, Jackson, was amazing! We had a great night at the Multnomah Whiskey library. We started in the library. The space is beautifully decorated with the expansive whiskey bar being the key feature. There is a large wood burning fireplace on one wall. There are also many pictures featuring important names in world whisky history around the room. I liked how the menu gave a small description of each picture. Our server Cody was very knowledgeable and helpful. I ordered the Bouillabaisse. It was cooked to perfection. The mussels and fish were tender and the broth was delicious. We also got the bacon popcorn which was tasty and fun. The whisky cake was very good, moist with a good chocolate flavor and not too sweet. It was a good sized piece and we shared amongst 4 since we were very full. After dinner Cody recommended some good whiskey for a novice like me to try which I enjoyed. After 2 hours we we moved to the members lounge, which is a smaller space with a more limited whiskey selection. The server Jordan was very sweet and helpful. If you haven't been here, you must go. Came here on a night off from parenting and they actually had a table for us. It's basically a speakeasy, although they do have a bar for the riff raff that didn't make a rez or just aren't cool enough (or maybe even dressed well enough). Reminded me heavily of the amazing speakeasies in SF. An incredible, curated, slow experience. Don't come here if you have any agenda or time restrictions. A plethora of whiskies (obviously) and some elevated bar food. What was absolutely delicious was the chocolate whiskey cake. *Drool* Inside is dimly lit, tables spaced enough to not hear other conversations, and clean. Staff is dressed in black ties. Bloody amazing. This semi-secreted "speakeasy" is above the casual "Green Room" bar/lounge. My party first dined next door at L'il Shalom, and prior to eating, we put our names on the wait list for the Whiskey Library, so it worked out perfectly. (This wasn't the first rodeo for my dining companions. They've been to this bar before and loved it so much, so they knew the routine). After our dinner, we went to the Green Room and we were summoned upstairs to the Whiskey Library soon after we arrived. (It was super cool, being escorted upstairs, up this stately wooden staircase, by a smartly-dressed porter-esque man who, with great flourish, opened the formal door to the Whiskey Library, to the formal space within. It was reminiscent of the porter opening the door to the formal dining room in the Titanic to Leo DiCaprio in the movie. It's like another world awaits beyond the door). And WHAT another world it is. It is exactly how one would imagine a "gentlemen's club" of yore: high ceilings, lots of warm wood, library-like shelves up to the ceiling with higher shelves accessible by rolling brass ladders, a massive and stately bar counter, a huge bricked wall with a massive fireplace, dumb waiters in the wall to the kitchen area, stained glass details embedded in the ceiling, smartly dressed servers rolling serving carts to each seating area (like a fancy dim sum place..... Hopefully, you get the gist. This place is special. You can get any cocktail here that you can imagine or conjure up. The servers are beyond knowledgable about anything related to cocktails and spirits and especially whiskeys. I'm not really into whiskey but I ordered a whiskey sour and it was delicious. My kid and her beau ordered various drinks and they were loving them. John was our server and he was great. The food menu looked wonderful and we decided to get a few desserts. We went to a couple of other bars nearby within walking distance when we got the text to return. It was definitely worth the wait! Came here for a few drinks and wow I was impressed. Made a reservation with a couple of my friends and made our way in. The first thing we noticed was the massive wall of whiskey. They were not kidding about the library part. This was definitely the most bottles that I have seen at any bar. The place had an older style look, with dim lights and old fashioned decor. We tried a couple of drinks and let me just tell you now, if I could drink more I would have. Old Fashioned: I mean it's the classic right? From the crystal clear, completely see through ice to the perfect portions of whiskey, sugar and bitters. It was honestly one of the best tasting old fashions I ever had. Dealer's Choice: The bartender made something akin to a Whiskey Sour, but whatever was put in there was tasty. It wasn't your typical sour mix for sure. Everything was probably made fresh and in house. Overall, one of the must go to places if you are a whiskey enthusiast. On our spontaneous vacation, we were recommended this by one of my best friends living up in Seattle. I made a reservation to have a hall pass and was quite confused when checking in (there are more than one entrance so for newbies like me, go towards the actual restaurant you can see through the window - the hostess is there). Since our table wasn't quite ready, we were brought up to a separate bar which was a bit exclusive. We were able to order a drink before entering the library. Once inside, get all your pictures because it was amazing. There were hundreds of bottles on the walls along with photos of key figures in the whiskey history. If you read through the BOOK they provide you at your table, at the end you can read the biographies of each individual (and yes, I did that cause I'm a nerd). I literally can't remember exactly what my husband ordered (he is quite the connoisseuir) and I ordered something off the libations list which changes frequently (impossibly tan - it had some type of banana flavor to it - LOVED IT). The best part was the souvenir coasters we went home with - such a great addition to our liquor cabinet. I told the waiter I like High West bourbons, and the waiter recommended a High West bourbon finished in cabernet barrels. I've had a High West barrel finished in Chardonnay barrels for $16 before in Washington state a week prior, but I hadn't had the one finished in cab barrels, which had also been priced for $16 a pour; I was thinking around $17 a pour because the two other High Wests on the Multnomah menu (the only High Wests on the menu, I might add) came out to about $17 on average. When the receipt came, I was billed for $78 a pour, for "Prisoner Share". I asked the waiter about the bill and he stated the "Prisoner Share" was the High West finished in cab sauv. He should have mentioned that the High West I ordered was going to be 4.5x the price than the ones listed on the menu. Overall, a really frustrating experience. read more

While adventuring through the downtown area and talking to the people , everyone kept recommending that we try this bar if we liked whiskey and craft cocktails ( who doesn't?). We decided to venture out for food and then make a stop by this place for a drink and to see what all the talk was about! When you walk up there are two doors! One for a restaurant called Green Door and another for the Whiskey Library! They are both part of the same building and owner. We were greeted at the door by the hostess. We did not make a reservation but it was early so we were able to go in and sit immediately! We were told that there was a reservation in 2 hours for the seats they gave us! That was no issue as I didn't plan on drinking for 2 hours with so much sunshine outside. We walked upstairs to the library and were impressed with the ambiance and music playing. We were left with two menus! One for craft cocktails and another "Whiskey Bible"! I was in whiskey wonderland. Reminded me of Whiskey Cake on steroids. We started off with two old fashions. The make them stirred on ice and then served over a large cube with an orange peel and no cherry! I'm not a fan of the cherry so I was very pleased ! Great balance of bitters and simple syrup with a good whiskey pour! I like to taste my whiskey. My wife had two of these and then I had the bartender do a curated flight of three whiskeys based on me telling him what I usually drink! King's County, Rabbit Hole, and Cascade Moon (15 year). I enjoyed 2/3 that fit my taste. The Cascade moon was almost too mellow for me! I don't like a burn but want a little bit and the alc content was 39% where most are higher. I have previously visited years ago, and wanted my husband (who loves whiskey) to experience this ambiance at least once! It seems that they now offer "hall pass" options to visitors, which is $25 per person for a guaranteed reservation - I was a little surprised to find out that the $25 pass is basically only for the reservation, and the price is not applied to your final bill at all. We opted not to make a reservation, and instead showed up about 10 min prior to opening on Saturday. Turns out this may not have been necessary, as the library didn't really pick up/become busier until about 5pm. However, if you want to ensure that you get in/get a seat without reservations, I would still highly recommend showing up early to wait. The library is upstairs (Green Room is on first), and we were promptly seated at the bar, and handed an extensive menu. It was actually quite challenging for my husband to pick out what he wanted to try. Thankfully, our bartender was really knowledgeable- and after asking my husband a few questions regarding his preferences, she was able to make several recommendations for him. I opted to get the Low Tide cocktail, which I would describe as a tart, spirit-forward drink. Overall, it's a unique space with really cool old-school ambiance and huge selection, definitely worth stopping in for whiskey aficionados. read more

They charged our card about $3700 too much (wrong tab). Inattentive service throughout but a beautiful atmosphere. We were seated at the bar and the bartender was busy making drinks for the room. Didn't make contact with us for about 10 minutes, which could be normal in a busy bar. We placed our order and talked amongst ourselves while we waited. In the next 10 minutes another patron and his date arrived next to us at the bar and had two drinks made and we're having an intimate conversation with the bartender about whiskey preferences while my date and I talked and waited. About 20 minutes after ordering the bartender quickly made our drinks and delivered them without conversation. Slightly annoyed we finished our drinks in 5 minutes and then tried to pay for another 5 minutes while the bartender refused to make eye contact with us from 15 feet away. We flagged down the other bartender who charged us $3780 for two $15 cocktails, luckily this was flagged as fraud by Capital One. The server sheepishly came over and said "this one ain't working" before he was pulled back by our actual bartender who charged the right amount. No apologies from anyone. When I looked at the bartender and said "you tried to charge us for the wrong tab, 4k right?" He whispered "it's on us" which isn't an apology and certainly didn't mean our drinks were free as we had already been charged the correct amount. We won't be back anytime soon. read more
