Wow, can we talk about how much I am in love with this bakery (and I'm not a huge fan of sweets at all). My friend and I stopped in after a long day and just happened to stumble upon McMillans as we somehow got ourselves lost. First off the bakery is not that big, it's a small storefront and smells mouthwatering as soon as you step in. I chose to get a donut stuffed with cream (the employee said that's what their famous for) and a half pound box of cookies. I will be back for sure! Wow I hate donuts but this one was light soft sugary goodness and the cookies were so so good. I got chocolate pecan, chocolate chip cookies, jelly stuffed triangles, schneckels, and Latrice stuffed chocolate cookies. Every single one was absolutely delicious. I unfortunately decided to share with my family and friends and my box of cookies were demolished by all the cookie monsters. Everyone was raving and asked me where I had gotten them from. I've heard people rave or dismiss this place, so tried some of their donuts. Their glazed donuts are big and very good (not as airy as others, but comparing apples and orange). Jelly donuts were also very good, not the typical red jelly, but a purple berry of some sort, and just the right amount. The revelation was the creme donut; not typically a big fan, but they were really good. The creme tasted almost like a light cake frosting, but in a good way. Not a lard based one, but with a little bit of granulated sugar, and served almost like a sandwich (i.e. the creme isn't shoved in like it is in a jelly donut). You might not eat the whole thing, but great to mop up the amount of creme you want. Plus, they also have them in granulated sugar, not just the normal powdered sugar. Would be five stars accept for their hours (somewhat unusual) and their parking lot (very awkward to park/get in and out of). read more

Some of the best creme filled donuts in the area. A dozen gets you a Baker's 13-and there's a true old school vibe-they even wrap the box with the old string machine! (what do you get at Dunkin? Tape-maybe!) If you are looking for a real bakery donut (not some processed Dunkin or even Krispy Kreme across the street) check this place out. Pretty fair hours for a locally run place too. Most days they are open 7-7 meaning even us poor working folk can make it in on a weekday! 4 stars for sometimes cranky counter service (employees often bark at one another and are short with customers! Got scolded for asking about an apple cider donut today!), $10 credit card limit, and the fact that their iconic neon sign was removed a few years back meaning the building has lost a lot of its vintage charm! Despite all this, that doesn't make the donuts taste any less amazing, so I guess I'll keep going here even if I do get yelled at by the bakers. i was in the area getting dinner from another restaurant i found on yelp when i searched for a bakery to get a dessert. i came across this one and the website boasted of being featured as NJs best bakeries so i had to give it a try. i went inside and checked out the options. i didn't really care for the cupcakes visually and i wasn't in a muffin or pie mood so i opted to try the donuts. i chose the vanilla crullers, maple pumpkin, and the iced apple cider. every. single. donut is delicious. the star in my opinion was the vanilla cruller but you literally couldn't go wrong choosing any of them. the vanilla cruller was so light and airy without being overly sweet. the maple wasn't overly mapley. very good. reason for the 4 stars as other people stated, the people that work behind the counter aren't very friendly. other than that i'll return to try other things. read more

My son really wanted chocolate cake and we decided to visit based on the awesome reviews. We purchased a chocolate cake w/ chocolate icing, sticky buns w/raisins and nuts, a cream doughnut, and vanilla and chocolate cupcakes. The sticky buns were a hit. Great flavor and texture. The cupcakes were very dry and the chocolate was not as rich as I had hoped. The cake was pleasantly more moist than the cupcakes, but still a bit on the dry side. The doughnuts seem to be one of the signature items. They had a great texture and flavor and come with enough cream to fill another doughnut. Overall, I'd go back for the sticky buns and probably give some other items a try. read more

While I lived in Collingswood for a couple of years I only recently made it in recently. The oh so small parking lot is quite the challenge so best to park next door at Wawa if you can. Plenty of choices between donuts, muffins, cakes etc just like most bakeries. We came about an hour before closing time and we only had a couple of donuts which were fine but nothing special. One of the donuts wasn't the freshest with it being slightly hard and makes me wonder if they would have been better earlier in the day (logical right?). We won't go out of our way next time but also won't avoid it. read more

Why you should go there right now: 7:30am Sunday - Cupcake balls filled with a dollop of white cream, dipped in raspberry jelly, the rolled in electric pink coconut. Probably one of the best two bite confections I've ever eaten. I will be there this morning buying more. Post cupcake buying update: My son and I headed over promptly at 8:30 treasure hunting for more pink balls of happiness. The place was crowded as ever, and a ping of concern went through me. What the heck if people were actually reading my reviews. Yikes! Do I get dibs on my favorite items? We stood in line and nowhere did my eyes see an electric pink puff. I did spy something new, a peanut butter tastycake cake. Hmmm. Mrs. McMillan herself waited on us this morning, and when I asked about the cupcake bites, she informed me that they were one of her son's 'creations' and she'd give our feedback that we enjoyed them. I asked about the peanut butter tastycake cake, and she assured me if we liked peanut butter we'd love that. I told her that my son was a particular fan, and we've never been disappointed with anything we've ordered, especially her son's 'creations'. While she was wrapping that up we discussed how they are the lone purveyors of the granulated sugar cream donut, and she remembered Bredenbeck's in Mayfair when I mentioned it. Knowing how to work a crowd, she asked my son if he'd ever had their peanut butter brownie. He said he hadn't, and suddenly there was a small bag placed in his hand with a wink 'to try'. In the eight seconds (later at home) that the peanut butter brownie was visible to my eye before my son inhaled it and pronounced it 'great' I will say it did indeed look great. 3" square, a definite layer of peanut butter, a large walnut on top. Very moist looking. Yum. I spied a small chocolate mound in the case and asked what it was. "Oh, that's today's creation. It's a cupcake center with cream filling, iced in vanilla butter cream, dipped in chocolate ganace, dusted with white chocolate slivers with a dollop of chocolate mousse on top." O.M.G. So as my blood sugar soared past 200 just looking at this mountain of sweet (that she was wrapping up for me) I assured myself that the yardwork I would be doing today would offset the potential sugar coma this confection represented. I wish my avatar could be a photo of my arse. You would know that I am no stranger to sweets; however, I do not love ALL baked goods, just a few. Here's what is non-paralleled at McMillan's. 1. Creme donuts. Never had CREAM donuts there (the custard type), but when I brought these donuts into my school in Philadelphia, I saw students taking Patco into my town to get more. They are THAT good. I once had an argument with someone over who had the best donuts (they were a lawyer who is never wrong) and brought them to one of his infamous dinner parties. He never argued with me again. They are truly THAT humbling. Even more so about 5 years ago before flour/sugar prices caused cutbacks. One donut could feed your craving for DAYS. 2. The petite fours. I read someone say they were nothing special. Are they on CRACK? These are melt in your mouth fondant perfection. I used to ask for these for my birthday present from my parents they are so good. Do you think they could get away with charging nearly $20 a lb for something that wasn't absolute nirvana? I promise. The $1 you'll pay for ONE (unless you're lucky enough to stumble into a sample day) is the best $1 you'll spend. Great for kids. The perfect size and not so much sugar they'll get crazy on ya. 3. The sticky buns. Especially the mini ones, which is odd, because I like the center of them the best. They are like caramel on cinnamon dough. And not overcooked dough, either. The moistest, gooeiest thing you can imagine. I am PA Dutch, so I am no stranger to sticky buns. My grandfather used to make them with me at 3 am with half a load on from his Manhattans, so I know my buns (see opening line). 4. The apple fritters. While I love fried dough, I hate pie. Despise *almost* all of it actually (see #4). This is due to the fact that I once binged on raw pie dough (I am PA Dutch, after all). Anyway, these are not made with pie dough. This is some other supernatural dough, filled with still slightly crisp apples and DEEP FRIED and covered with glaze. It's like what the OLD apple pies cooked in lard from McDs would taste like if you were on acid. Even if you don't like pie, you need to try these. 5. Speaking of pies, have ever had or heard of a Chess pie? Me neither. Now, white cake is my favorite baked good, so I love birthdays. The problem is, everyone gets crappy birthday cake, so I have to wait for MY birthday to get a good one. So what does this have to do with pie? I'll tell you. Ever since having a Lemon Chess pie from McMillan's, I no longer even GET a birthday cake. I get birthday pie. And I hate pie. Chess pie is like a light, airy custard pie with a crunchy crust. Imagine Lemon Meringue were to make sweet love with Creme Brulee.. Yes, it's that good. 6. Butter cake. This too is one of those things you'd have to try before you'd ever think to order it. This tastes like the dough of a danish, made into the consistency of a cheesecake, and again, with a crispy, sugary crust. It's like a crunchy cheesecake, without the cream cheese flavor. Just buttery. It's like eating a cake batter danish in cheesecake form. Yeah, I'm not helping here, so I'll move on. Try it. 7. The non-pareil cookies. Usually they have these out to sample. If not, ask for one. I don't know what reviewer said they were mediocre, but they never had these. Buttery, sugary, crispy goodness. And the shaped sugar cookies, while horrifically overpriced, are still the best bought sugar cookies I've ever had. 8. The raisin tea biscuits. I once cried in line (I was 8 months pregnant and had a craving, so cut me some slack) when the gigantor woman in front of me took the last 10 of them and wouldn't spare me ONE. These are incredibly hard to describe. They are like a cross between a biscuit and raisin scone, but lightly glazed with egg. These are actually what I get 9/10 I go to McMillan's because they are not too sweet and I don't feel like I'm doubling my waist size (although I do load them with butter). If it's your first time, ask for a tall one (they don't stay as moist in the middle if the top part has slid during baking). These are great to take to people's houses when you are traveling (as are the sticky buns) as they have the longest shelf lives. Worth mentioning is the fact that McMillan's will make you ANYTHING you want, ANY WAY you want it, ANY TIME you need it with some advance ordering. And best of all, in any quantity? Want to try that lemon chess pie? Give them a call, they make you one any time you want. You don't even have to order more than 1 of anything. THAT is customer service. The prices are HIGH for a bakery in my opinion, but well worth it, as I would pay anything to keep this iconic bakery open as long as I live in Collingswood. Also, the cupcakes are pretty decent, and so are the brownies and cheesecakes(pies), but if you can only choose a few things, stick with the above. read more

McMillan's is probably the greatest bakery ever. A friend of mine is so obsessed with their cakes that he will use any and every excuse to make a stop. Rumors of the infamous cream donuts at McMillan's made their way to me when my coworkers discovered my weakness. I didn't believe the hype, opting to stick with my old standby, Dunkin Donuts' kreme-filled chocolate-frosted (occasionally with sprinkles) donut, on the rare occasion that I started my day with such an indulgence. One day, a visitor to our office brought in a huge bakery box filled with deliciousness from McMillan's. There were several cream-filled donuts and I think I visualized my name written in the powdered sugar on one of them. It was love at first bite. I've been to McMillan's twice so Yelp says I'm a regular. I only WISH I could be a regular! Sadly, I live 200 miles away but was lucky enough to stay nearby on a recent weekend. Bakeries like this are why I am active on Yelp, bakeries like this are why I taught myself to bake at home (though I'm not even close to their level of competence!), bakeries like this make me glad to part of the human race. I could not survive as someone's dog, watching them get fresh donuts from McMillan's while I stared at the floor waiting for even a morsel to fall. Grrrrr! Living between here and Di Bartolo's is like having Greg Maddux and Nolan Ryan in their prime on your team. Something good is always gonna happen. I've tried the cream filled doughnut and their chocolate with vanilla frosting cupcakes. The creme in the doughnut and the vanilla frosting are quite possibly the best I"ve ever had. Its so good, that you end up much like a little kid with a plate of spaghetti. You start out with the frosting/creme on the pastry, and by the end of eating it, you've got frosting on your mouth, on you hands, on you fingers. And you just don't give a flying fig. Because they are really THAT good. I also ordered a lemon sponge cake. It was pefectly moist and very flavorful. Sometimes lemon or other fruit flavors taste artificial or too strong, but this was perfect. It was very very tasty and went over really well at the party I went to in Philly last night. Next time I'm going to get one of their pies. Though I"m almost afraid to, since they might knock The Pie Kitchen and my mom off the top spot. read more

I live in Delaware County, PA and McMillan's is worth the trip over the Benny. Enjoyed this bakery's products for some time through a friend who lives locally. There are no old fashioned, full service bakeries of note here in Drexel Hill. I went in for seasonal Paczki (Easter) pastries - the likes of which I have never enjoyed. Fluffy, puffy, tender dough fried & glazed like a typical doughnut and filled with the best black raspberry filling I ever tasted. There was nothing typical about it. I left with two loaves of white bread that were still warm and, very knowingly, could not be sliced as the counter girl informed me. That is absolutely correct; the bread would've been ruined. They took my special order for the Paczki (a large order I needed to travel with) and packed it accordingly. The order was ready and waiting for me. I will never spend $3.50 for a loaf of Stroehmann again. This bread is like your grandmother's. With no preservatives or other unnecessary crap. I fill my freezer with it. McMillan's loaf of homemade white is $3.49. You cannot get better bread anywhere. While I am not a doughnut eater, it should interest you that McMillan's cream doughnuts are worth every calorie. Exceptional product;helpful, pleasant staff; sparkling clean and affordable. You cannot do better than McMillan's Bakery, no matter what city you live in. read more

So I'm 10 or so years out of New Jersey, and I'm still dreaming about McMillan's sticky buns. My mom used to bring me to the bakery every weekend to pick out the treats for breakfast. A McMillan's donut is a lot like a cigarette. It is addicting. Each one you consume will take years off of your life. It's hard to have just one. So yes, they are unfreakingbelievable! They might possibly fit a gallon of cream inside of these things. I don't know. It's one of those rare 5 star kind of places. You walk into this typical looking bakery and are sent into this euphoric setting that recalls imagery and senses not yet thought of since days spent in my grandmothers kitchen during my youth. I'm not a sweets person by any stretch of the imagination. This place is legit. If MC Hammer ever went here, he would agree that it would be too hard not too. Ordered their coffee roll and corn muffin. Girlfriend got a boston creme donut. It was perfection. Their variety ranges from cookies, cakes, cupcakes, donuts, danishes, etc. The staff is super friendly and doesn't mind waiting the 20 minutes it takes to finally decide what you want. This is the most insanely indulgent experience you can subject your body to. I predict you will lose a year off of your life per doughnut yet proclaim to everyone that it was VERY WORTH IT. Of course, you should never actually put a doughnut in your mouth if you are concerned with things like living and not dying but if you're already committed, make sure it's from McMillan's. So all the basic doughnuts are really delicious but if you're here you might as well go for his gourmet doughnuts, and there is nothing more ridiculous than the Vanilla Cream Doughnut. If there wasn't a busy intersection between my front door and McMillan's bakery...I would be at least 50 lbs. overweight from eating the amazing, light, fluffy, moist, sweet, decadent donuts every morning for breakfast. Creme donuts, boston creme, cherry danish, cherry turnovers, pepperoni bread, AMAZING cakes and cupcakes, the list goes on. Everything here is so fresh and flavorful. I agree that McMillan's stuff is delicious. The petite fours melt in your mouth. The reason I'm giving them a 3 is for the presentation of their sweets. As a cake decorator and pastry chef, I was not impressed with their sloppy icing of cupcakes and their sugar "decorated" cookies. I'm sure the cookies are delicious, but they look like something you'd get from a supermarket bakery. They seem to be pretty traditional, their petite fours were very generic. They had no interesting filling (no filling at all actually) and the flower decoration is the most basic decoration a petite four gets. Also, the teenagers that work there seem to know very little about the sweets they are selling. One girl even said "ew! Why do they do that??" about the red velet cupcakes being iced with cream cheese frosting. First of all...did you really just say "ew" in front of a customer? Secondly, red velvet is almost always iced with cream cheese frosting. Like I said, it was good, but it's nothing I'm going to go out of my way to get to. read more

I have been eating their cupcakes here since I was in high school and am now in my 40's.. though the price of cupcakes continue to climb well into $3-4, theirs stay low. Your not going to get many creative flavors, or any new trend of cupcake. But if your looking for a basic fabulous vanilla or chocolate cupcake, this is your place. I am obsessed with chocolate cupcakes, but I HATE cupcakes with ganache filling.. These are just perfect plain chocolate.
