The food, service, and ambience here are very good. I deducted a star because while the food is good, they added too much to it trying to enhance the flavors. Sometimes simple is best. For example, the artichoke and crab dip as well as the mushrooms were very garlicky. I love garlic, but it seemed as if the chef used it to cover the flavors rather than letting the flavor of the dish itself shine through. The kale with our root vegetable hash was also very salty. Probably an error on the part of the chef when seasoning, but we couldn't eat it that salty. Other than that, we enjoyed our meal very much. We did the four course meal that is listed on the back of the menu, sharing bites with each other. We had the crab bisque, house salad (yum!), wild mushrooms, crab and artichoke dip, razor clams, and root vegetable hash. We also had the creme brulee for dessert. I really liked the house salad (really yummy combo of blue cheese, pears, and figs), bisque, and hash. The view of roche harbor is beautiful from this restaurant. We had a table right by the window, but all of the tables have a good view. The restaurant can be a bit of a challenge to find. You have to go into roche harbor resort towards the water. Then park near the old lime kilns and the company store. Walk past the hotel de haro and it's the little building on the water there. Not marked very well read more

To begin, the menu is now confusing and uninteresting, a "tasting" menu (4 courses), just way, way over the top. Whoever made the decision to change the menu didn't know what they were doing. The dinner: Well, the blue cheese salad was very good. Then came the razor clam course. Greasy, overbreaded, tough, inedible. Mashed potatoes tasted gummy and lumpy (maybe instant with a few lumps thrown in for authenticity). The tiny, I mean tiny, little pathetic carrot was underdone to the point of crunchy. Service was slow but friendly. We dined here a few years ago, in the summer...I remember having a decent meal. But, whew, we won't be back soon! read more

Terrible. We made reservations for 7:15 on a Friday night after reading the great food reviews...well, here was our experience...hoping to save someone else from making the same mistake we did. It took the waiter (Samil) at least 10min to give us a wine menu, greet us, and get us water, and then another 10-15min thereafter to move along our dining experience. When I ordered the prime rib, he was condescending about how I wanted it cooked and doubted the plating sizes that my fiancé ordered, "are you sure that will be enough?" he asked. (We are of "normal" size...for reference, in case you thought he was judging us by our size) We ordered wine, starters and dessert to which he was useless, and when in inquired about sauces he was rude, "that's the ....that's listed on the menu." RUDE. It was too loud, the piano was nice, however it was too loud and we were seated by the kitchen door, and felt we were yelling across our small table for 2. Overall, I would NEVER return, the food was decent, but we expected more than paper table coverings and very poor service for our $130 dinner for 2. read more

It's hard to believe that a restaurant in such a beautiful place can have such terrible service. Once seated, we were ignored for about 10 minutes before our water was filled. It then took another 10 minutes before we saw our waitress for the first time. At least 30 min went by before we placed our entree order. It took a shocking amount of time for us to receive our entrees and we received no updates on to why it was taking so long. At one point our server blatantly lied and told us our food would be right out, then disappeared for 20 minutes. She Ignored us for the majority of the time, and offered no explanation or apology when asked about why it was taking so long. The food was mostly mediocre and the feelings were mixed ranging from delicious to sub par. The whole experience took 2 hours with the actual dining taking approximately 15 minutes. The manager was nice enough, but sounds like this isn't anything new. They probably hear it all the time and don't care. Overall a very disappointing meal. We've had good meals here and love the ambiance. Unfortunately the NYE experience was very, very disappointing. Fixed menu was a good idea but food prep and execution was terrible. My wife's lamb chops were cooked to 3 different temps and served barely warm. The root vegies were so under cooked they were hard and difficult to cut. My prime rib was nearly raw. I'd asked for medium rare. I was asked if I wanted a new cut or re-heated. I requested a new cut. Well I received a re-plated piece that had been broiled on both sides. More like a pan fried steak. Brown on the outside and pink in the middle. This is not a prime rib cut. You'd think prime rib would be easy. So by this time it was time to box it up and go home. Deserts couldn't be boxed due to being baked in the serving dishes but this really didn't matter because the cobbler was cold. Guess I shouldn't have expected anything else. So $300 later it was time to leave. Time to consider other dining options for special occasions. read more

My husband and I recently stayed at Roche Harbor for a romantic weekend. I was very excited for a special dinner at McMillin's Dining Room. I was sadly disappointed. The table we were seated at was cramped. There was a very loud party with several children at the next table. The waitress we had couldn't remember the specials, and mumbled her way through them. She told us that they'd recently redone the menu to be smaller portion sizes (as people weren't finishing what was on the plate - her words!), but kept the same prices. My salad was about 1/2 cup of bitter white lettuce stems and one chunk of blue cheese for $9! Terrible. Our prime rib (we both got) was BLAND! I'm not one to season food at a restaurant, and I put salt on mine 3 times. It took waitress 25 minutes to ask about dessert after table being cleared as she was paying attention to her "regular customers". Never again! read more

First impressions of this place was its in a great location. That and the drinks was the only good thing about this place. As soon as we walked in the guy in the front told us to go to the bar because all tables were booked. At the time half of the restaurant area was empty. Food was okay but not worth what they charge for it. Also, they charged my debit card someone elses bill for over $250.00 on top of my bill. They gave a brief sorry it wil drop off in a couple days and walked away.... This place is horrible.. read more

Having arrived into Roche Harbor after 3 pm, our only option was here. When we entered, a man was at the host station and replied to our inquiry of a place to sit with telling us the dining room doesn't open until 5. He motioned to the bar and told us to "go in there, I'm trying to work on this." The bar area was nicely lit with the amazing view of the harbor and the bartender was very friendly and attentive. Small plates were shareable as we selected 3 items. Items arrived and 2 of the plates had hair on them vs in the food. Bartender was appalled and let the kitchen know. Overall - wouldn't go back. The initial "welcome" at the door and later interaction I witnessed between this same man and an elderly customer was rude. Even though it was the only place open, customers are your livelihood. Wouldn't return. Food not worth it and hospitality at the welcome is a turn off. Menu isn't anything special either. read more

The atmosphere on Roche Harbor is so relaxing and everything is just so cute, nothing can really be terrible here. This is one of the very few restaurants off the dock in Roche Harbor. I came here with my grandparents while visiting and some locals we know from Friday Harbor, that said, the locals knew about everyone that worked there, the service and ambiance were great. Beautiful view over the water, I would have loved sitting outside if it was nicer out. The food was very good, I had the Cesar salad which was nice and the ahi tuna with wasabi peas, I love tuna, I wish the wasabi was stronger but it probably isn't because most people don't want it too strong. Everyone else had the prime rib, I guess it is what they are known for (according to my grandma). The desserts, oh the desserts, we had the special a berry crumble, delish! & the Starbucks dessert, sooo good!!! I had he lavender martini it was nice, strong! The bloody Mary's are really good, get one, it even has a fresh shrimp in it! Overall, a great place, but beware it can be a bit pricey in the end! read more

The ambiance here is romantic and makes for a great celebration meal. We were here for my birthday and most of the meal was superb. Jimmy at the bar was friendly as he mixed our drinks & got our calamari. The calamari was great with fried baby corns & corn nuts mixed in The chili lime vinaigrette complimented it well. Then dinner. Leslie our server was wonderful. We started with the oysters & they were probably the sweetest & most tender we've ever had. The Caesar was good but a little overdressed. My Darling got the chef tasting menu & the halibut deserves 10 stars!! It was seasoned & cooked to perfection & we are picky about our fish so this is high praise, it came with risotto that was also cooked perfectly. I had the 40 day aged prime rib, smaller cut & it was perfect & plenty!! The veal au jus was delicious, & the roasted head of garlic was appreciated. My Darlings next course is why we couldn't give the 5th star, the lamb chops were tough, too tough to enjoy the way I know the chef wanted us too. To be fair Leslie tried several times to make it right with a better chop or more halibut but we were so full we had to decline. Thank you Leslie for taking such good care of us. We finished with the cobbler for dessert & it completed the meal nicely. read more

Had dinner reservations here for the 24th at 7, showed up a little early and sat in the bar until our seats were ready. Bartender was super friendly I had a pomegranate cosmopolitan and my boyfriend had the Harbor Manhattan they were great! Before we could even finish our drinks our table was ready. We had a great view sat by the window as the sun was going down and watched the people walk on the docks. There were so many amazing sounding dishes on the menu it was so hard not to get everything! We did two appetizers, the calamari, (which had cranberries and almonds, and covered with a grand mariner sauce we were uncertain of it but had heard great things so had to try it!) and two oysters. The calamari was so amazing we left absolutely nothing on the plate and the oysters were ok I can't really grade those I'm still testing how I feel about raw oysters. Then we both got the 5 courses which give you the chefs muse bouche, choose a salad or bisque, choose a seafood plate, and choose a beef plate, then get mama's cobbler. The chefs muse bouche was a scallop stuffed with crab and coated in cheese, it was delicious. Next I got the crab bisque it was a slightly spicy red soup I don't even know how to explain it! there was about an ice cream scoop of shredded crab placed in the middle of the bowl and it was so delicious i wish i had more! Now for the more main course dishes. I ordered the seafood stew which was steamed clams in a white wine sauce with shrimp and potato fingerlings and drizzled with a sour cream and chive sauce, I get the idea here but it was awkward tasting together. Clams, shrimp and potatoes are always amazing, they were cooked just right not overly done it was just the two different sauces that were odd together. My boyfriend got the pan seared scallops it was three scallops on top of a crab risotto cake and covered in bacon bits, so naturally he loved it!! Last dish, he ordered tenderloin not sure what veggies he got with it but the meat with the demi glace was amazing tender, juicy and sweet. I ordered the lamb shank which was braised and had spinach risotto, it was really good but I should have gotten something else (not much of a bbq sauce fan) cooked very well tho it was literally falling off the bone. When it came time for dessert we just asked for it to go we were extremely full but overall not overly disappointed with my choices they were still yummy. We will definitely visit again!! read more

As always, this place never disappoints. We went for my birthday and sat in the bar to have drinks first. The bartender was friendly and made us some great cocktails including the Pig War martini. After a couple of drinks watching the sunset, we moved into the dining room, where we had fantastic service. Our waitress was great and on top of everything. I made reservations in advance to make sure we had the best 30th anniversary dinner and notified them of the occasion. They knew and still decided to seat us at a table just inside the door from the host/hostess station and right where every diner and staff had to pass going to/from every other table. The people seated right before us, without a reservation, were seated at a table right on the window to the harbor. When I said to the hostess this was not what I expected for our anniversary, she replied we could sit in the bar for our dinner. I couldn't believe that was her solution so politely declined and said we wouldn't be staying. My husband was so disappointed and definitely not as polite. If the food is indicative of the attitude of the wait staff, we probably made a wise decision to not stay. I did have some trepidation when I made the reservations and seeing some of the comments on Open Table and Yelp, but as we were staying at a lovely condo on the harbor and they were right on Roche Harbor, decided to go ahead. Well, lesson learned. And it probably saved us a few hundred dollars. read more

The service wasn't the best but manageable. The food was very good but I ordered the four course and I didn't get to choose my first or my fourth course. This made no sense to me. After the third course my boyfriend and I had to wait 20+ mins for our main course to come. So long that he brought out a complimentary salad while we waited. A few years ago, I wrote a review of Mcmillans in which I called it one of the best restaurants in the Pacific Northwest. It was a wonderful place, with stellar food and terrific service. The prices were expensive but not unreasonable for the location and quality. That has all changed: Someone had the terrible idea to change the menu and add small plates. Not small plates like tapas, but small plates like half-size steaks for close to the same price as the large steak used to be. Now that the plates are small, someone decided the quality can drop, too. Tonight, I had clams that were clearly overcooked and squash that was mushy. We had a steak that was extremely overcooked. We would have liked to send it back, but there was no waitstaff to be found. We got a partial refund, but the money did not overcome the sadness we felt. A favorite restaurant is no more, destroyed by an attempt to squeeze a few more dollars out of customers. One can only hope that enough customers tell the management so that Mcmillans can once again return to greatness. read more

My wife and I visit Roche Harbor and the McMillin Dining Room nearly every year. We consistently have a wonderful experience and the food never disappoints. The ambiance and view cannot be beat either. If you find your way to the San Juan Island I would highly recommend making your way to Roche Harbor. read more

McMillan's Dining Room - The prime rib was just ok as it didn't appear to have been seasoned. I really liked the Crab Bisque and the Chocolate Cake was out-of-bounds yummy. The main reason for the poor score is we had a horrible waitress. My Wife ordered the Blue Cheese salad and we were both shocked when it was delivered to her as it was about a half-cup of salad for $9.95. It wasn't even the good part of Romain lettuce but the white stems. The waitress did mention that they reduced their portion sizes because people were leaving food behind. They sure didn't reduce the price though. After we finished our main course she didn't bother to come to our table to 15 minutes. I guess for me the cake was at least worth the wait. read more
